Microscopic resolution of superconducting electrons in ultrahigh-pressed hydrogen sulfide

We investigate the electronic and phonon properties of hydrogen sulfide (SH$_3$) under ultrahigh pressure to elucidate the origin of its high-T$_c$ superconductivity. Contrary to the prevailing belief that the metalized S-H $σ$ bond is responsible, our analysis, based on the anisotropic Migdal-Eliashberg equation and the crystal orbital Hamilton population (COHP) calculation, reveals that the H-H $σ$-antibonding states play a dominant role in the large electron-phonon coupling that leads to the superconducting pairing in SH$_3$. Furthermore, by partially restricting the vibration of S atoms, we demonstrate that the S-H bonds provide subsidiary contributions to the pairing interaction. These findings shed light on the importance of the previously overlooked H-H $σ^*$ bonds in driving high-T$_c$ superconductivity in SH$_3$ and offer insights into the relationship between metallic H-H covalent antibonding and high-T$_c$ superconductivity in other hydrogen-rich materials under high pressure.

Physics-Guided Graph Neural Networks for Real-time AC/DC Power Flow Analysis

The increasing scale of alternating current and direct current (AC/DC) hybrid systems necessitates a faster power flow analysis tool than ever. This letter thus proposes a specific physics-guided graph neural network (PG-GNN). The tailored graph modelling of AC and DC grids is firstly advanced to enhance the topology adaptability of the PG-GNN. To eschew unreliable experience emulation from data, AC/DC physics are embedded in the PG-GNN using duality. Augmented Lagrangian method-based learning scheme is then presented to help the PG-GNN better learn nonconvex patterns in an unsupervised label-free manner. Multi-PG-GNN is finally conducted to master varied DC control modes. Case study shows that, relative to the other 7 data-driven rivals, only the proposed method matches the performance of the model-based benchmark, also beats it in computational efficiency beyond 10 times.

Nitrogen-Based Magneto-Ionic Manipulation of Exchange Bias in CoFe/MnN Heterostructures

Electric field control of the exchange bias effect across ferromagnet/antiferromagnet (FM/AF) interfaces has offered exciting potentials for low-energy-dissipation spintronics. In particular, the solid state magneto-ionic means is highly appealing as it may allow reconfigurable electronics by transforming the all-important FM/AF interfaces through ionic migration. In this work, we demonstrate an approach that combines the chemically induced magneto-ionic effect with the electric field driving of nitrogen in the Ta/Co$_{0.7}$Fe$_{0.3}$/MnN/Ta structure to electrically manipulate exchange bias. Upon field-cooling the heterostructure, ionic diffusion of nitrogen from MnN into the Ta layers occurs. A significant exchange bias of 618 Oe at 300 K and 1484 Oe at 10 K is observed, which can be further enhanced after a voltage conditioning by 5% and 19%, respectively. This enhancement can be reversed by voltage conditioning with an opposite polarity. Nitrogen migration within the MnN layer and into the Ta capping layer cause the enhancement in exchange bias, which is observed in polarized neutron reflectometry studies. These results demonstrate an effective nitrogen-ion based magneto-ionic manipulation of exchange bias in solid-state devices.

Pyramid Multi-branch Fusion DCNN with Multi-Head Self-Attention for Mandarin Speech Recognition

As one of the major branches of automatic speech recognition, attention-based models greatly improves the feature representation ability of the model. In particular, the multi-head mechanism is employed in the attention, hoping to learn speech features of more aspects in different attention subspaces. For speech recognition of complex languages, on the one hand, a small head size will lead to an obvious shortage of learnable aspects. On the other hand, we need to reduce the dimension of each subspace to keep the size of the overall feature space unchanged when we increase the number of heads, which will significantly weaken the ability to represent the feature of each subspace. Therefore, this paper explores how to use a small attention subspace to represent complete speech features while ensuring many heads. In this work we propose a novel neural network architecture, namely, pyramid multi-branch fusion DCNN with multi-head self-attention. The proposed architecture is inspired by Dilated Convolution Neural Networks (DCNN), it uses multiple branches with DCNN to extract the feature of the input speech under different receptive fields. To reduce the number of parameters, every two branches are merged until all the branches are merged into one. Thus, its shape is like a pyramid rotated 90 degrees. We demonstrate that on Aishell-1, a widely used Mandarin speech dataset, our model achieves a character error rate (CER) of 6.45% on the test sets.

Interplanetary Coronal Mass Ejections and Stream Interaction Regions observed by Tianwen-1 and Maven at Mars

Tianwen-1 spacecraft (Wan et al. 2020) is China's first Mars exploration mission. The Mars Orbiter Magnetometer (MOMAG) is a scientific instrument aboard the Tianwen-1 mission that is designed to study magnetic fields at Mars, including the solar wind to the magnetosheath and the ionosphere. Using the first Tianwen-1/MOMAG data that is publicly available, we present interplanetary coronal mass ejection (ICME) and stream interaction region (SIR) catalogues based on in-situ observations at Mars between November 16, 2021, and December 31, 2021. We compared the magnetic field intensity and vector magnetic field measurements from Tianwen-1/MOMAG and Mars Atmospheric Volatile EvolutioN (MAVEN)/MAG during the ICME and SIR interval and found a generally good consistency between them. Due to MAVEN's orbital adjustment since 2019, the Tianwen-1/MOMAG instrument is currently the almost unique interplanetary magnetic field monitor at Mars. The observations indicate that the MOMAG instrument on Tianwen-1 is performing well and can provide accurate measurements of the vector magnetic field in the near-Mars solar wind space. The multi-point observations combining MOMAG, MINPA, and MEPA on board Tianwen-1 with MAG, SWIA, and STATIC on board MAVEN will open a window to systematically study the characteristic of ICMEs and SIRs at Mars, and their influences on the Martian atmosphere and ionosphere.

X-SepFormer: End-to-end Speaker Extraction Network with Explicit Optimization on Speaker Confusion

Target speech extraction (TSE) systems are designed to extract target speech from a multi-talker mixture. The popular training objective for most prior TSE networks is to enhance reconstruction performance of extracted speech waveform. However, it has been reported that a TSE system delivers high reconstruction performance may still suffer low-quality experience problems in practice. One such experience problem is wrong speaker extraction (called speaker confusion, SC), which leads to strong negative experience and hampers effective conversations. To mitigate the imperative SC issue, we reformulate the training objective and propose two novel loss schemes that explore the metric of reconstruction improvement performance defined at small chunk-level and leverage the metric associated distribution information. Both loss schemes aim to encourage a TSE network to pay attention to those SC chunks based on the said distribution information. On this basis, we present X-SepFormer, an end-to-end TSE model with proposed loss schemes and a backbone of SepFormer. Experimental results on the benchmark WSJ0-2mix dataset validate the effectiveness of our proposals, showing consistent improvements on SC errors (by 14.8% relative). Moreover, with SI-SDRi of 19.4 dB and PESQ of 3.81, our best system significantly outperforms the current SOTA systems and offers the top TSE results reported till date on the WSJ0-2mix.

Adaptive Weighted Multiview Kernel Matrix Factorization with its application in Alzheimer's Disease Analysis -- A clustering Perspective

Recent technology and equipment advancements provide with us opportunities to better analyze Alzheimer's disease (AD), where we could collect and employ the data from different image and genetic modalities that may potentially enhance the predictive performance. To perform better clustering in AD analysis, in this paper we propose a novel model to leverage data from all different modalities/views, which can learn the weights of each view adaptively. Different from previous vanilla Non-negative Matrix Factorization which assumes data is linearly separable, we propose a simple yet efficient method based on kernel matrix factorization, which is not only able to deal with non-linear data structure but also can achieve better prediction accuracy. Experimental results on ADNI dataset demonstrate the effectiveness of our proposed method, which indicate promising prospects of kernel application in AD analysis.

EdgeVO: An Efficient and Accurate Edge-based Visual Odometry

Visual odometry is important for plenty of applications such as autonomous vehicles, and robot navigation. It is challenging to conduct visual odometry in textureless scenes or environments with sudden illumination changes where popular feature-based methods or direct methods cannot work well. To address this challenge, some edge-based methods have been proposed, but they usually struggle between the efficiency and accuracy. In this work, we propose a novel visual odometry approach called \textit{EdgeVO}, which is accurate, efficient, and robust. By efficiently selecting a small set of edges with certain strategies, we significantly improve the computational efficiency without sacrificing the accuracy. Compared to existing edge-based method, our method can significantly reduce the computational complexity while maintaining similar accuracy or even achieving better accuracy. This is attributed to that our method removes useless or noisy edges. Experimental results on the TUM datasets indicate that EdgeVO significantly outperforms other methods in terms of efficiency, accuracy and robustness.

Occlusion-Resistant Instance Segmentation of Piglets in Farrowing Pens Using Center Clustering Network

Computer vision enables the development of new approaches to monitor the behavior, health, and welfare of animals. Instance segmentation is a high-precision method in computer vision for detecting individual animals of interest. This method can be used for in-depth analysis of animals, such as examining their subtle interactive behaviors, from videos and images. However, existing deep-learning-based instance segmentation methods have been mostly developed based on public datasets, which largely omit heavy occlusion problems; therefore, these methods have limitations in real-world applications involving object occlusions, such as farrowing pen systems used on pig farms in which the farrowing crates often impede the sow and piglets. In this paper, we adapt a Center Clustering Network originally designed for counting to achieve instance segmentation, dubbed as CClusnet-Inseg. Specifically, CClusnet-Inseg uses each pixel to predict object centers and trace these centers to form masks based on clustering results, which consists of a network for segmentation and center offset vector map, Density-Based Spatial Clustering of Applications with Noise (DBSCAN) algorithm, Centers-to-Mask (C2M), and Remain-Centers-to-Mask (RC2M) algorithms. In all, 4,600 images were extracted from six videos collected from three closed and three half-open farrowing crates to train and validate our method. CClusnet-Inseg achieves a mean average precision (mAP) of 84.1 and outperforms all other methods compared in this study. We conduct comprehensive ablation studies to demonstrate the advantages and effectiveness of core modules of our method. In addition, we apply CClusnet-Inseg to multi-object tracking for animal monitoring, and the predicted object center that is a conjunct output could serve as an occlusion-resistant representation of the location of an object.

In-flight Calibration of the Magnetometer on the Mars Orbiter of Tianwen-1

Mars Orbiter Magnetometer (MOMAG) is one of seven science payloads onboard Tianwen-1's orbiter. Unlike most of the satellites, Tianwen-1's orbiter is not magnetically cleaned, and the boom where placed the magnetometer's sensors is not long enough. These pose many challenges to the magnetic field data processing. In this paper, we introduce the in-flight calibration process of the Tianwen-1/MOMAG. The magnetic interference from the spacecraft, including spacecraft generated dynamic field and slowly-changing offsets are cleaned in sequence. Then the calibrated magnetic field data are compared with the data from the Mars Atmosphere and Volatile EvolutioN (MAVEN). We find that some physical structures in the solar wind are consistent between the two data sets, and the distributions of the magnetic field strength in the solar wind are very similar. These results suggest that the in-flight calibration of the MOMAG is successful and the MOMAG provides reliable data for scientific research.

Cooperative Sensing and Heterogeneous Information Fusion in VCPS: A Multi-agent Deep Reinforcement Learning Approach

Cooperative sensing and heterogeneous information fusion are critical to realize vehicular cyber-physical systems (VCPSs). This paper makes the first attempt to quantitatively measure the quality of VCPS by designing a new metric called Age of View (AoV). Specifically, we first present the system architecture where heterogeneous information can be cooperatively sensed and uploaded via vehicle-to-infrastructure (V2I) communications in vehicular edge computing (VEC). Logical views are constructed by fusing the heterogeneous information at edge nodes. Further, we formulate the problem by deriving a cooperative sensing model based on the multi-class M/G/1 priority queue, and defining the AoV by modeling the timeliness, completeness and consistency of the logical views. On this basis, a multi-agent deep reinforcement learning solution is proposed. In particular, the system state includes vehicle sensed information, edge cached information and view requirements. The vehicle action space consists of the sensing frequencies and uploading priorities of information. A difference-reward-based credit assignment is designed to divide the system reward, which is defined as the VCPS quality, into the difference reward for vehicles. Edge node allocates V2I bandwidth to vehicles based on predicted vehicle trajectories and view requirements. Finally, we build the simulation model and give a comprehensive performance evaluation, which conclusively demonstrates the superiority of the proposed solution.

Cooperative Sensing and Uploading for Quality-Cost Tradeoff of Digital Twins in VEC

Recent advances in sensing technologies, wireless communications, and computing paradigms drive the evolution of vehicles in becoming an intelligent and electronic consumer products. This paper investigates enabling digital twins in vehicular edge computing (DT-VEC) via cooperative sensing and uploading, and makes the first attempt to achieve the quality-cost tradeoff in DT-VEC. First, a DT-VEC architecture is presented, where the heterogeneous information can be sensed by vehicles and uploaded to the edge node via vehicle-to-infrastructure (V2I) communications. The digital twins are modeled based on the sensed information, which are utilized to from the logical view to reflect the real-time status of the physical vehicular environment. Second, we derive the cooperative sensing model and the V2I uploading model by considering the timeliness and consistency of digital twins, and the redundancy, sensing cost, and transmission cost. On this basis, a bi-objective problem is formulated to maximize the system quality and minimize the system cost. Third, we propose a solution based on multi-agent multi-objective (MAMO) deep reinforcement learning, where a dueling critic network is proposed to evaluate the agent action based on the value of state and the advantage of action. Finally, we give a comprehensive performance evaluation, demonstrating the superiority of MAMO.

A Provable Splitting Approach for Symmetric Nonnegative Matrix Factorization

The symmetric Nonnegative Matrix Factorization (NMF), a special but important class of the general NMF, has found numerous applications in data analysis such as various clustering tasks. Unfortunately, designing fast algorithms for the symmetric NMF is not as easy as for its nonsymmetric counterpart, since the latter admits the splitting property that allows state-of-the-art alternating-type algorithms. To overcome this issue, we first split the decision variable and transform the symmetric NMF to a penalized nonsymmetric one, paving the way for designing efficient alternating-type algorithms. We then show that solving the penalized nonsymmetric reformulation returns a solution to the original symmetric NMF. Moreover, we design a family of alternating-type algorithms and show that they all admit strong convergence guarantee: the generated sequence of iterates is convergent and converges at least sublinearly to a critical point of the original symmetric NMF. Finally, we conduct experiments on both synthetic data and real image clustering to support our theoretical results and demonstrate the performance of the alternating-type algorithms.

Improving Target Speaker Extraction with Sparse LDA-transformed Speaker Embeddings

As a practical alternative of speech separation, target speaker extraction (TSE) aims to extract the speech from the desired speaker using additional speaker cue extracted from the speaker. Its main challenge lies in how to properly extract and leverage the speaker cue to benefit the extracted speech quality. The cue extraction method adopted in majority existing TSE studies is to directly utilize discriminative speaker embedding, which is extracted from the pre-trained models for speaker verification. Although the high speaker discriminability is a most desirable property for speaker verification task, we argue that it may be too sophisticated for TSE. In this study, we propose that a simplified speaker cue with clear class separability might be preferred for TSE. To verify our proposal, we introduce several forms of speaker cues, including naive speaker embedding (such as, x-vector and xi-vector) and new speaker embeddings produced from sparse LDA-transform. Corresponding TSE models are built by integrating these speaker cues with SepFormer (one SOTA speech separation model). Performances of these TSE models are examined on the benchmark WSJ0-2mix dataset. Experimental results validate the effectiveness and generalizability of our proposal, showing up to 9.9% relative improvement in SI-SDRi. Moreover, with SI-SDRi of 19.4 dB and PESQ of 3.78, our best TSE system significantly outperforms the current SOTA systems and offers the top TSE results reported till date on the WSJ0-2mix.

Emergent Electronic Kagome Lattice in Correlated Charge-Density-Wave State of 1T-TaS$_2$

Quantum materials with tunable correlated and/or topological electronic states, such as the electronic Kagome lattice, provide an ideal platform to study the exotic quantum properties. However, the real-space investigations on the correlated electronic Kagome lattice have been rarely reported. Herein, we report on the electronic Kagome lattice emerging in the correlated charge-density-wave (CDW) state of 1T-TaS$_2$ at ~200 K via variable-temperature scanning tunneling microscopy (VT-STM). This emergent Kagome lattice can be considered a fractional electron-filling superstructure with reduced translational and rotational symmetries, confirmed by STM measurements and density functional theory simulations. The characteristic band structure and density of states of this electronic Kagome lattice are further explored based on theoretical calculations. Our results demonstrate a self-organized electronic Kagome lattice from the correlated CDW state via the effective tuning parameter of temperature and provide a platform to directly explore the interplay of correlated electrons and topological physics.

Randomized Greedy Algorithms and Composable Coreset for k-Center Clustering with Outliers

In this paper, we study the problem of {\em $k$-center clustering with outliers}. The problem has many important applications in real world, but the presence of outliers can significantly increase the computational complexity. Though a number of methods have been developed in the past decades, it is still quite challenging to design quality guaranteed algorithm with low complexity for this problem. Our idea is inspired by the greedy method, Gonzalez's algorithm, that was developed for solving the ordinary $k$-center clustering problem. Based on some novel observations, we show that a simple randomized version of this greedy strategy actually can handle outliers efficiently. We further show that this randomized greedy approach also yields small coreset for the problem in doubling metrics (even if the doubling dimension is not given), which can greatly reduce the computational complexity. Moreover, together with the partial clustering framework proposed in arXiv:1703.01539 , we prove that our coreset method can be applied to distributed data with a low communication complexity. The experimental results suggest that our algorithms can achieve near optimal solutions and yield lower complexities comparing with the existing methods.

Deep Biological Pathway Informed Pathology-Genomic Multimodal Survival Prediction

The integration of multi-modal data, such as pathological images and genomic data, is essential for understanding cancer heterogeneity and complexity for personalized treatments, as well as for enhancing survival predictions. Despite the progress made in integrating pathology and genomic data, most existing methods cannot mine the complex inter-modality relations thoroughly. Additionally, identifying explainable features from these models that govern preclinical discovery and clinical prediction is crucial for cancer diagnosis, prognosis, and therapeutic response studies. We propose PONET- a novel biological pathway-informed pathology-genomic deep model that integrates pathological images and genomic data not only to improve survival prediction but also to identify genes and pathways that cause different survival rates in patients. Empirical results on six of The Cancer Genome Atlas (TCGA) datasets show that our proposed method achieves superior predictive performance and reveals meaningful biological interpretations. The proposed method establishes insight into how to train biologically informed deep networks on multimodal biomedical data which will have general applicability for understanding diseases and predicting response and resistance to treatment.

Multi-Task Learning with Prior Information

Multi-task learning aims to boost the generalization performance of multiple related tasks simultaneously by leveraging information contained in those tasks. In this paper, we propose a multi-task learning framework, where we utilize prior knowledge about the relations between features. We also impose a penalty on the coefficients changing for each specific feature to ensure related tasks have similar coefficients on common features shared among them. In addition, we capture a common set of features via group sparsity. The objective is formulated as a non-smooth convex optimization problem, which can be solved with various methods, including gradient descent method with fixed stepsize, iterative shrinkage-thresholding algorithm (ISTA) with back-tracking, and its variation -- fast iterative shrinkage-thresholding algorithm (FISTA). In light of the sub-linear convergence rate of the methods aforementioned, we propose an asymptotically linear convergent algorithm with theoretical guarantee. Empirical experiments on both regression and classification tasks with real-world datasets demonstrate that our proposed algorithms are capable of improving the generalization performance of multiple related tasks.
