Deep Item-based Collaborative Filtering for Top-N Recommendation

Item-based Collaborative Filtering(short for ICF) has been widely adopted in recommender systems in industry, owing to its strength in user interest modeling and ease in online personalization. By constructing a user's profile with the items that the user has consumed, ICF recommends items that are similar to the user's profile. With the prevalence of machine learning in recent years, significant processes have been made for ICF by learning item similarity (or representation) from data. Nevertheless, we argue that most existing works have only considered linear and shallow relationship between items, which are insufficient to capture the complicated decision-making process of users. In this work, we propose a more expressive ICF solution by accounting for the nonlinear and higher-order relationship among items. Going beyond modeling only the second-order interaction (e.g. similarity) between two items, we additionally consider the interaction among all interacted item pairs by using nonlinear neural networks. Through this way, we can effectively model the higher-order relationship among items, capturing more complicated effects in user decision-making. For example, it can differentiate which historical itemsets in a user's profile are more important in affecting the user to make a purchase decision on an item. We treat this solution as a deep variant of ICF, thus term it as DeepICF. To justify our proposal, we perform empirical studies on two public datasets from MovieLens and Pinterest. Extensive experiments verify the highly positive effect of higher-order item interaction modeling with nonlinear neural networks. Moreover, we demonstrate that by more fine-grained second-order interaction modeling with attention network, the performance of our DeepICF method can be further improved.

Robust Beamforming for Downlink 3D-MIMO Systems with $l_1$-norm Bounded CSI Uncertainty

In this paper, a novel robust beamforming scheme is proposed in three dimensional multi-input multi-output (3D-MIMO) systems. As one of the typical deployments of massive MIMO, a 3D-MIMO system owns sparse channels in angular domain. Thus, various of sparse channel estimation algorithms produce sparse channel estimation errors which can be utilized to narrow down the perturbation region of imperfect CSI. We investigate a $l_1$-norm bounded channel uncertainty model for the robust beamforming problems, which captures the sparse nature of channel errors. Compared with the conventional spherical uncertainty, we prove that the scheme with $l_1$-norm bounded uncertainty consumes less beamforming power with the same signal to interference and noise ratio (SINR) thresholds. The proposed scheme is reformulated as a second-order cone programming (SOCP) and simulation results verify the effectiveness of our algorithm.

Optical control of magnetism in NiFe/VO2 heterostructures

Optical methods for magnetism manipulation have been considered as a promising strategy for ultralow-power and ultrahigh-speed spin switches, which becomes a hot spot in the field of spintronics. However, a widely applicable and efficient method to combine optical operation with magnetic modulation is still highly desired. Here, the strongly correlated electron material VO2 is introduced to realize phase-transition based optical control of the magnetism in NiFe. The NiFe/VO2 bilayer heterostructure features appreciable modulations in electrical conductivity (55%), coercivity (60%), and magnetic anisotropy (33.5%). Further analyses indicate that interfacial strain coupling plays a crucial role in this modulation. Utilizing this optically controlled magnetism modulation feature, programmable Boolean logic gates (AND, OR, NAND, NOR, XOR, NXOR and NOT) for high-speed and low-power data processing are demonstrated based on this engineered heterostructure. As a demonstration of phase-transition spintronics, this work may pave the way for next-generation electronics in the post-Moore era.

Giant and anisotropic many-body spin-orbit tunability in a strongly correlated kagome magnet

Owing to the unusual geometry of kagome lattices-lattices made of corner-sharing triangles-their electrons are useful for studying the physics of frustrated, correlated and topological quantum electronic states. In the presence of strong spin-orbit coupling, the magnetic and electronic structures of kagome lattices are further entangled, which can lead to hitherto unknown spin-orbit phenomena. Here we use a combination of vector-magnetic-field capability and scanning tunnelling microscopy to elucidate the spin-orbit nature of the kagome ferromagnet Fe3Sn2 and explore the associated exotic correlated phenomena. We discover that a many-body electronic state from the kagome lattice couples strongly to the vector field with three-dimensional anisotropy, exhibiting a magnetization-driven giant nematic (two-fold-symmetric) energy shift. Probing the fermionic quasi-particle interference reveals consistent spontaneous nematicity-a clear indication of electron correlation-and vector magnetization is capable of altering this state, thus controlling the many-body electronic symmetry. These spin-driven giant electronic responses go well beyond Zeeman physics and point to the realization of an underlying correlated magnetic topological phase. The tunability of this kagome magnet reveals a strong interplay between an externally applied field, electronic excitations and nematicity, providing new ways of controlling spin-orbit properties and exploring emergent phenomena in topological or quantum materials.

Ionic Tuning of Cobaltites at the Nanoscale

Control of materials through custom design of ionic distributions represents a powerful new approach to develop future technologies ranging from spintronic logic and memory devices to energy storage. Perovskites have shown particular promise for ionic devices due to their high ion mobility and sensitivity to chemical stoichiometry. In this work, we demonstrate a solid-state approach to control of ionic distributions in (La,Sr)CoO$_{3}$ thin films. Depositing a Gd capping layer on the perovskite film, oxygen is controllably extracted from the structure, up-to 0.5 O/u.c. throughout the entire 36 nm thickness. Commensurate with the oxygen extraction, the Co valence state and saturation magnetization show a smooth continuous variation. In contrast, magnetoresistance measurements show no-change in the magnetic anisotropy and a rapid increase in the resistivity over the same range of oxygen stoichiometry. These results suggest significant phase separation, with metallic ferromagnetic regions and oxygen-deficient, insulating, non-ferromagnetic regions, forming percolated networks. Indeed, X-ray diffraction identifies oxygen-vacancy ordering, including transformation to a brownmillerite crystal structure. The unexpected transformation to the brownmillerite phase at ambient temperature is further confirmed by high-resolution scanning transmission electron microscopy which shows significant structural - and correspondingly chemical - phase separation. This work demonstrates room-temperature ionic control of magnetism, electrical resistivity, and crystalline structure in a 36 nm thick film, presenting new opportunities for ionic devices that leverage multiple material functionalities.

Experimental observation of bulk nodal lines and electronic surface states in ZrB$_2$

Topological nodal-line semimetals are characterized by the line-contact bulk band crossings and the topological surface states. Breaking certain protecting symmetry turns this system into a Dirac semimetal or Weyl semimetal that hosts zero-dimensional isolated nodal points. Recent advances in band theory predicted a topological nodal-line semimetal state possessing a new type of nodal line in AlB$_2$-type diborides. Here, we report an experimental realization of nodal-line fermions and associated surface states near the Fermi energy in ZrB$_2$ by angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy combined with first-principles calculations. The Dirac nodal lines in ZrB$_2$ wind into two groups of nodal rings, which are linked together along the $Γ$-$K$ direction. We further observe a distinct surface state connecting to each nodal line, indicative of the nontrivial topological nature of the bulk nodal lines. Therefore, our results provide convincing experimental evidence of the nodal-line semimetal states in ZrB$_2$ both in the bulk and on the surface, suggesting ZrB$_2$ as a remarkable platform for discovering unique phenomena induced by nodal-line fermions.

Two ultra-stable novel allotropes of Tellurium few-layers

At least four two- or quasi-one- dimensional allotropes and a mixture of them were theoretically predicted or experimentally observed for low-dimensional Te, namely the α, \b{eta}, γ, δ and chiral-α+δ phases. Among them the γ and α phases were found the most stable phases for monolayer and thicker layers, respectively. Here, we found two novel low-dimensional phases, namely the ε and ζ phases. The ζ phase is over 29 meV/Te more stable than and the ε phase shows comparable stability with the most stable monolayer γ phase. The energetic difference between the ζ and α phases reduces with respect to the increased layer thickness and vanishes at the four-layer (12-sublayer) thickness, while this thickness increases under change doping. Both ε and ζ phases are metallic chains and layers, respectively. The ζ phase, with very strong interlayer coupling, shows quantum well states in its layer-dependent bandstructures. These results provide significantly insight into the understanding of polytypism in Te few-layers and may boost tremendous studies on properties of various few-layer phases.

Experimental Observation of Dirac Nodal Links in Centrosymmetric Semimetal TiB$_2$

The topological nodal-line semimetal state, serving as a fertile ground for various topological quantum phases, where a topological insulator, Dirac semimetal, or Weyl semimetal can be realized when the certain protecting symmetry is broken, has only been experimentally studied in very few materials. In contrast to discrete nodes, nodal lines with rich topological configurations can lead to more unusual transport phenomena. Utilizing angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy and first-principles calculations, here, we provide compelling evidence of nodal-line fermions in centrosymmetric semimetal TiB$_2$ with a negligible spin-orbit coupling effect. With the band crossings just below the Fermi energy, two groups of Dirac nodal rings are clearly observed without any interference from other bands, one surrounding the Brillouin zone (BZ) corner in the horizontal mirror plane $σ_h$ and the other surrounding the BZ center in the vertical mirror plane $σ_v$. The linear dispersions forming Dirac nodal rings are as wide as 2 eV. We further observe that the two groups of nodal rings link together along the $Γ$-$K$ direction, composing a nodal-link configuration. The simple electronic structure with Dirac nodal links mainly constituting the Fermi surfaces suggests TiB$_2$ as a remarkable platform for studying and applying the novel physical properties related to nodal-line fermions.

$β$-RhPb$_2$, a topological superconductor candidate

A topological superconductor candidate $β$-RhPb$_2$ is predicted by using the first-principles electronic structure calculations. Our calculations show that there is a band inversion around the Fermi level at the Z point of Brillouin zone. The calculated nonzero topological invariant Z$_2$ indicates that $β$-RhPb$_2$ is a topological insulator defined on a curved Fermi level. The slab calculations further demonstrate that the gapless nontrivial topological surface states (TSS) are not overlapped by the bulk states and they cross the Fermi level. The phonon calculations confirm the dynamical stability of $β$-RhPb$_2$, while the electron-phonon coupling (EPC) calculations predict that the superconducting transition temperature ($T_c$) of $β$-RhPb$_2$ can reach 9.7 K. The coexistence of nontrivial topological band structure with the TSS crossing the Fermi level as well as the superconducting $T_c$ above the liquid-helium temperature suggest that the layered compound $β$-RhPb$_2$ is a topological superconductor, which deserves further experimental verification.

DuReader: a Chinese Machine Reading Comprehension Dataset from Real-world Applications

This paper introduces DuReader, a new large-scale, open-domain Chinese ma- chine reading comprehension (MRC) dataset, designed to address real-world MRC. DuReader has three advantages over previous MRC datasets: (1) data sources: questions and documents are based on Baidu Search and Baidu Zhidao; answers are manually generated. (2) question types: it provides rich annotations for more question types, especially yes-no and opinion questions, that leaves more opportunity for the research community. (3) scale: it contains 200K questions, 420K answers and 1M documents; it is the largest Chinese MRC dataset so far. Experiments show that human performance is well above current state-of-the-art baseline systems, leaving plenty of room for the community to make improvements. To help the community make these improvements, both DuReader and baseline systems have been posted online. We also organize a shared competition to encourage the exploration of more models. Since the release of the task, there are significant improvements over the baselines.

Adaptations of ROUGE and BLEU to Better Evaluate Machine Reading Comprehension Task

Current evaluation metrics to question answering based machine reading comprehension (MRC) systems generally focus on the lexical overlap between the candidate and reference answers, such as ROUGE and BLEU. However, bias may appear when these metrics are used for specific question types, especially questions inquiring yes-no opinions and entity lists. In this paper, we make adaptations on the metrics to better correlate n-gram overlap with the human judgment for answers to these two question types. Statistical analysis proves the effectiveness of our approach. Our adaptations may provide positive guidance for the development of real-scene MRC systems.

VPH+ and MPC Combined Collision Avoidance for Unmanned Ground Vehicle in Unknown Environment

There are many situations for which an unmanned ground vehicle has to work with only partial observability of the environment. Therefore, a feasible nonholonomic obstacle avoidance and target tracking action must be generated immediately based on the real-time perceptual information. This paper presents a robust approach to integrating VPH+ (enhanced vector polar histogram) and MPC (model predictive control). VPH+ is applied to calculate the desired direction for its environment perception ability and computational efficiency, while MPC is explored to perform a constrained model-predictive trajectory generation. This approach can be implemented in a reactive controller. Simulation experiments are performed in VREP to validate the proposed approach.

Multi-Passage Machine Reading Comprehension with Cross-Passage Answer Verification

Machine reading comprehension (MRC) on real web data usually requires the machine to answer a question by analyzing multiple passages retrieved by search engine. Compared with MRC on a single passage, multi-passage MRC is more challenging, since we are likely to get multiple confusing answer candidates from different passages. To address this problem, we propose an end-to-end neural model that enables those answer candidates from different passages to verify each other based on their content representations. Specifically, we jointly train three modules that can predict the final answer based on three factors: the answer boundary, the answer content and the cross-passage answer verification. The experimental results show that our method outperforms the baseline by a large margin and achieves the state-of-the-art performance on the English MS-MARCO dataset and the Chinese DuReader dataset, both of which are designed for MRC in real-world settings.

Intrinsic Origin of Enhancement of Ferroelectricity in SnTe Ultrathin Films

Previous studies showed that, as ferroelectric films become thinner, their Curie temperature (Tc) and polarization below Tc both typically decrease. In contrast, a recent experiment [Chang et al., Science 353, 274 (2016)] observed that atomic-thick SnTe films have a higher Tc than their bulk counterpart, which was attributed to extrinsic effects. Here, we find, using first-principles calculations, that the 0K energy barrier for the polarization switching (which is a quantity directly related to Tc) is higher in most investigated defect-free SnTe ultrathin films than that in bulk SnTe, and that the 5-unit-cell (UC) SnTe thin film has the largest energy barrier as a result of an interplay between hybridization interactions and Pauli repulsions. Further simulations, employing a presently developed effective Hamiltonian, confirm that free-standing defect-free SnTe thin films have a higher Tc than bulk SnTe, except for the 1-UC case. Our work therefore demonstrates the possibility to intrinsically enhance ferroelectricity of ultrathin films by reducing their thickness.

Spatial Image Steganography Based on Generative Adversarial Network

With the recent development of deep learning on steganalysis, embedding secret information into digital images faces great challenges. In this paper, a secure steganography algorithm by using adversarial training is proposed. The architecture contain three component modules: a generator, an embedding simulator and a discriminator. A generator based on U-NET to translate a cover image into an embedding change probability is proposed. To fit the optimal embedding simulator and propagate the gradient, a function called Tanh-simulator is proposed. As for the discriminator, the selection-channel awareness (SCA) is incorporated to resist the SCA based steganalytic methods. Experimental results have shown that the proposed framework can increase the security performance dramatically over the recently reported method ASDL-GAN, while the training time is only 30% of that used by ASDL-GAN. Furthermore, it also performs better than the hand-crafted steganographic algorithm S-UNIWARD.

The melilite-type compound (Sr$_{1-x}$,$A_x$)$_2$MnGe$_2$S$_6$O ($A$=K, La) being a room temperature ferromagnetic semiconductor

The seeking of room temperature ferromagnetic semiconductors, which take advantages of both the charge and spin degrees of freedom of electrons to realize a variety of functionalities in devices integrated with electronic, optical, and magnetic storage properties, has been a long-term goal of scientists and engineers. Here, by using the spin-polarized density functional theory calculations, we predict a new series of high temperature ferromagnetic semiconductors based on the melilite-type oxysulfide Sr$_2$MnGe$_2$S$_6$O through hole (K) and electron (La) doping. Due to the lack of strong antiferromagnetic superexchange between Mn ions, the weak antiferromagnetic order in the parent compound Sr$_2$MnGe$_2$S$_6$O can be suppressed easily by charge doping with either $p$-type or $n$-type carriers, giving rise to the expected ferromagnetic order. At a doping concentration of 25%, both the hole-doped and electron-doped compounds can achieve a Curie temperature ($T_\text{c}$) above 300 K. The underlying mechanism is analyzed. Our study provides an effective approach for exploring new types of high temperature ferromagnetic semiconductors.

Magnetic interactions in a proposed diluted magnetic semiconductor (Ba$_\text{1-x}$K$_\text{x}$)(Zn$_\text{1-y}$Mn$_\text{y}$)$_\text{2}$P$_\text{2}$

By using first-principles electronic structure calculations, we have studied the magnetic interactions in a proposed BaZn$_2$P$_2$-based diluted magnetic semiconductor (DMS). For a typical compound Ba(Zn$_{0.944}$Mn$_{0.056}$)$_2$P$_2$ with only spin doping, due to the superexchange interaction between Mn atoms and the lack of itinerant carriers, the short-range antiferromagnetic coupling dominates. Partially substituting K atoms for Ba atoms, which introduces itinerant hole carriers into the $p$ orbitals of P atoms so as to link distant Mn moments with the spin-polarized hole carriers via the $p$-$d$ hybridization between P and Mn atoms, is very crucial for the appearance of ferromagnetism in the compound. Furthermore, applying hydrostatic pressure first enhances and then decreases the ferromagnetic coupling in (Ba$_{0.75}$K$_{0.25}$)(Zn$_{0.944}$Mn$_{0.056}$)$_2$P$_2$ at a turning point around 15 GPa, which results from the combined effects of the pressure-induced variations of electron delocalization and $p$-$d$ hybridization. Compared with the BaZn$_2$As$_2$-based DMS, the substitution of P for As can modulate the magnetic coupling effectively. Both the results for BaZn$_2$P$_2$-based and BaZn$_2$As$_2$-based DMSs demonstrate that the robust antiferromagnetic (AFM) coupling between the nearest Mn-Mn pairs bridged by anions is harmful to improving the performance of this II-II-V based DMS materials.

Asymptotic Analysis for Low-Resolution Massive MIMO Systems with MMSE Receiver

The uplink achievable rate of massive multiple- input-multiple-output (MIMO) systems, where the low-resolution analog-to-digital converters (ADCs) are assumed to equip at the base station (BS), is investigated in this paper. We assume that only imperfect channel station information is known at the BS. Then a new MMSE receiver is designed by taking not only the Gaussian noise, but also the channel estimation error and quantizer noise into account. By using the Stieltjes transform of random matrix, we further derive a tight asymptotic equivalent for the uplink achievable rate with proposed MMSE receiver. We present a detailed analysis for the number of BS antennas through the expression of the achievable rates and validate the results using numerical simulations. It is also shown that we can compensate the performance loss due to the low-resolution quantization by increasing the number of antennas at the BS.
