Image Gradient-Aided Photometric Stereo Network

Photometric stereo (PS) endeavors to ascertain surface normals using shading clues from photometric images under various illuminations. Recent deep learning-based PS methods often overlook the complexity of object surfaces. These neural network models, which exclusively rely on photometric images for training, often produce blurred results in high-frequency regions characterized by local discontinuities, such as wrinkles and edges with significant gradient changes. To address this, we propose the Image Gradient-Aided Photometric Stereo Network (IGA-PSN), a dual-branch framework extracting features from both photometric images and their gradients. Furthermore, we incorporate an hourglass regression network along with supervision to regularize normal regression. Experiments on DiLiGenT benchmarks show that IGA-PSN outperforms previous methods in surface normal estimation, achieving a mean angular error of 6.46 while preserving textures and geometric shapes in complex regions.

Towards Consistent Object Detection via LiDAR-Camera Synergy

As human-machine interaction continues to evolve, the capacity for environmental perception is becoming increasingly crucial. Integrating the two most common types of sensory data, images, and point clouds, can enhance detection accuracy. Currently, there is no existing model capable of detecting an object's position in both point clouds and images while also determining their corresponding relationship. This information is invaluable for human-machine interactions, offering new possibilities for their enhancement. In light of this, this paper introduces an end-to-end Consistency Object Detection (COD) algorithm framework that requires only a single forward inference to simultaneously obtain an object's position in both point clouds and images and establish their correlation. Furthermore, to assess the accuracy of the object correlation between point clouds and images, this paper proposes a new evaluation metric, Consistency Precision (CP). To verify the effectiveness of the proposed framework, an extensive set of experiments has been conducted on the KITTI and DAIR-V2X datasets. The study also explored how the proposed consistency detection method performs on images when the calibration parameters between images and point clouds are disturbed, compared to existing post-processing methods. The experimental results demonstrate that the proposed method exhibits excellent detection performance and robustness, achieving end-to-end consistency detection. The source code will be made publicly available at https://github.com/xifen523/COD.

Robust Quantum Gates against Correlated Noise in Integrated Quantum Chips

As quantum circuits become more integrated and complex, additional error sources that were previously insignificant start to emerge. Consequently, the fidelity of quantum gates benchmarked under pristine conditions falls short of predicting their performance in realistic circuits. To overcome this problem, we must improve their robustness against pertinent error models besides isolated fidelity. Here we report the experimental realization of robust quantum gates in superconducting quantum circuits based on a geometric framework for diagnosing and correcting various gate errors. Using quantum process tomography and randomized benchmarking, we demonstrate robust single-qubit gates against quasi-static noise and spatially-correlated noise in a broad range of strengths, which are common sources of coherent errors in large-scale quantum circuit. We also apply our method to non-static noises and to realize robust two-qubit gates. Our work provides a versatile toolbox for achieving noise-resilient complex quantum circuits.

RMAFF-PSN: A Residual Multi-Scale Attention Feature Fusion Photometric Stereo Network

Predicting accurate normal maps of objects from two-dimensional images in regions of complex structure and spatial material variations is challenging using photometric stereo methods due to the influence of surface reflection properties caused by variations in object geometry and surface materials. To address this issue, we propose a photometric stereo network called a RMAFF-PSN that uses residual multiscale attentional feature fusion to handle the ``difficult'' regions of the object. Unlike previous approaches that only use stacked convolutional layers to extract deep features from the input image, our method integrates feature information from different resolution stages and scales of the image. This approach preserves more physical information, such as texture and geometry of the object in complex regions, through shallow-deep stage feature extraction, double branching enhancement, and attention optimization. To test the network structure under real-world conditions, we propose a new real dataset called Simple PS data, which contains multiple objects with varying structures and materials. Experimental results on a publicly available benchmark dataset demonstrate that our method outperforms most existing calibrated photometric stereo methods for the same number of input images, especially in the case of highly non-convex object structures. Our method also obtains good results under sparse lighting conditions.

Within-basket Recommendation via Neural Pattern Associator

Within-basket recommendation (WBR) refers to the task of recommending items to the end of completing a non-empty shopping basket during a shopping session. While the latest innovations in this space demonstrate remarkable performance improvement on benchmark datasets, they often overlook the complexity of user behaviors in practice, such as 1) co-existence of multiple shopping intentions, 2) multi-granularity of such intentions, and 3) interleaving behavior (switching intentions) in a shopping session. This paper presents Neural Pattern Associator (NPA), a deep item-association-mining model that explicitly models the aforementioned factors. Specifically, inspired by vector quantization, the NPA model learns to encode common user intentions (or item-combination patterns) as quantized representations (a.k.a. codebook), which permits identification of users's shopping intentions via attention-driven lookup during the reasoning phase. This yields coherent and self-interpretable recommendations. We evaluated the proposed NPA model across multiple extensive datasets, encompassing the domains of grocery e-commerce (shopping basket completion) and music (playlist extension), where our quantitative evaluations show that the NPA model significantly outperforms a wide range of existing WBR solutions, reflecting the benefit of explicitly modeling complex user intentions.

UCMCTrack: Multi-Object Tracking with Uniform Camera Motion Compensation

Multi-object tracking (MOT) in video sequences remains a challenging task, especially in scenarios with significant camera movements. This is because targets can drift considerably on the image plane, leading to erroneous tracking outcomes. Addressing such challenges typically requires supplementary appearance cues or Camera Motion Compensation (CMC). While these strategies are effective, they also introduce a considerable computational burden, posing challenges for real-time MOT. In response to this, we introduce UCMCTrack, a novel motion model-based tracker robust to camera movements. Unlike conventional CMC that computes compensation parameters frame-by-frame, UCMCTrack consistently applies the same compensation parameters throughout a video sequence. It employs a Kalman filter on the ground plane and introduces the Mapped Mahalanobis Distance (MMD) as an alternative to the traditional Intersection over Union (IoU) distance measure. By leveraging projected probability distributions on the ground plane, our approach efficiently captures motion patterns and adeptly manages uncertainties introduced by homography projections. Remarkably, UCMCTrack, relying solely on motion cues, achieves state-of-the-art performance across a variety of challenging datasets, including MOT17, MOT20, DanceTrack and KITTI. Experimental Realization of Two Qutrits Gate with Tunable Coupling in Superconducting Circuits

Gate-based quantum computation has been extensively investigated using quantum circuits based on qubits. In many cases, such qubits are actually made out of multilevel systems but with only two states being used for computational purpose. While such a strategy has the advantage of being in line with the common binary logic, it in some sense wastes the ready-for-use resources in the large Hilbert space of these intrinsic multi-dimensional systems. Quantum computation beyond qubits (e.g., using qutrits or qudits) has thus been discussed and argued to be more efficient than its qubit counterpart in certain scenarios. However, one of the essential elements for qutrit-based quantum computation, two-qutrit quantum gate, remains a major challenge. In this work, we propose and demonstrate a highly efficient and scalable two-qutrit quantum gate in superconducting quantum circuits. Using a tunable coupler to control the cross-Kerr coupling between two qutrits, our scheme realizes a two-qutrit conditional phase gate with fidelity 89.3% by combining simple pulses applied to the coupler with single-qutrit operations. We further use such a two-qutrit gate to prepare an EPR state of two qutrits with a fidelity of 95.5%. Our scheme takes advantage of a tunable qutrit-qutrit coupling with a large on:off ratio. It therefore offers both high efficiency and low cross talk between qutrits, thus being friendly for scaling up. Our work constitutes an important step towards scalable qutrit-based quantum computation.

First-principles thermal equation of state of fcc iridium

The thermal equation of states for fcc iridium (Ir) is obtained from first-principles molecular dynamics up to 3000 K and 540 GPa. The equation of state (EoS) is globally fitted to a simplified free energy model and various parameters are derived. The theoretical principal Hugoniot is compared with shockwave experiments, where discrepancy suggests formation of new Ir phases. A few representative EoS parameters, such as bulk modulus $K_T$, thermal expansivity $α$, Grüneisen parameter $γ$, and constant pressure capacity $C_P$, Debye temperature, $Θ_D$ are computed to compare with experimental data

Ultra-high pressure disordered eight-coordinated phase of Mg$_2$GeO$_4$: Analogue for super-Earth mantles

Mg2GeO4 is an analogue for the ultra-high pressure behavior of Mg2SiO4, so we have investigated magnesium germanate to 275 GPa and over 2000 K using a laser-heated diamond anvil cell combined with in situ synchrotron X-ray diffraction and density functional theory (DFT) computations. The experimental results are consistent with a novel phase with disordered Mg and Ge, in which germanium adopts eight-fold coordination with oxygen: the cubic Th3P4- type structure. Simulations using the special quasirandom structure (SQS) method suggest partial order in the tetragonal I-42d structure, indistinguishable from I-43d Th3P4 in our experiments. These structures have not been reported before in any oxide. If applicable to silicates, the formation of this highly coordinated and intrinsically disordered phase would have important implications for the interior mineralogy of large, rocky extrasolar planets.

Suppressing Coherent Two-Qubit Errors via Dynamical Decoupling

Scalable quantum information processing requires the ability to tune multi-qubit interactions. This makes the precise manipulation of quantum states particularly difficult for multi-qubit interactions because tunability unavoidably introduces sensitivity to fluctuations in the tuned parameters, leading to erroneous multi-qubit gate operations. The performance of quantum algorithms may be severely compromised by coherent multi-qubit errors. It is therefore imperative to understand how these fluctuations affect multi-qubit interactions and, more importantly, to mitigate their influence. In this study, we demonstrate how to implement dynamical-decoupling techniques to suppress the two-qubit analogue of the dephasing on a superconducting quantum device featuring a compact tunable coupler, a trending technology that enables the fast manipulation of qubit--qubit interactions. The pure-dephasing time shows an up to ~14 times enhancement on average when using robust sequences. The results are in good agreement with the noise generated from room-temperature circuits. Our study further reveals the decohering processes associated with tunable couplers and establishes a framework to develop gates and sequences robust against two-qubit errors.

High detection efficiency silicon single-photon detector with a monolithic integrated circuit of active quenching and active reset

Silicon single-photon detectors (SPDs) are key devices for detecting single photons in the visible wavelength range. Photon detection efficiency (PDE) is one of the most important parameters of silicon SPDs, and increasing PDE is highly required for many applications. Here, we present a practical approach to increase PDE of silicon SPD with a monolithic integrated circuit of active quenching and active reset (AQAR). The AQAR integrated circuit is specifically designed for thick silicon single-photon avalanche diode (SPAD) with high breakdown voltage (250-450 V), and then fabricated via the process of high-voltage 0.35-$μ$m bipolarCMOS-DMOS. The AQAR integrated circuit implements the maximum transition voltage of ~ 68 V with 30 ns quenching time and 10 ns reset time, which can easily boost PDE to the upper limit by regulating the excess bias up to a high enough level. By using the AQAR integrated circuit, we design and characterize two SPDs with the SPADs disassembled from commercial products of single-photon counting modules (SPCMs). Compared with the original SPCMs, the PDE values are increased from 68.3% to 73.7% and 69.5% to 75.1% at 785 nm, respectively, with moderate increases of dark count rate and afterpulse probability. Our approach can effectively improve the performance of the practical applications requiring silicon SPDs.

Attentive Autoencoders for Multifaceted Preference Learning in One-class Collaborative Filtering

Most existing One-Class Collaborative Filtering (OC-CF) algorithms estimate a user's preference as a latent vector by encoding their historical interactions. However, users often show diverse interests, which significantly increases the learning difficulty. In order to capture multifaceted user preferences, existing recommender systems either increase the encoding complexity or extend the latent representation dimension. Unfortunately, these changes inevitably lead to increased training difficulty and exacerbate scalability issues. In this paper, we propose a novel and efficient CF framework called Attentive Multi-modal AutoRec (AMA) that explicitly tracks multiple facets of user preferences. Specifically, we extend the Autoencoding-based recommender AutoRec to learn user preferences with multi-modal latent representations, where each mode captures one facet of a user's preferences. By leveraging the attention mechanism, each observed interaction can have different contributions to the preference facets. Through extensive experiments on three real-world datasets, we show that AMA is competitive with state-of-the-art models under the OC-CF setting. Also, we demonstrate how the proposed model improves interpretability by providing explanations using the attention mechanism.

Experimental realization of phase-controlled dynamics with hybrid digital-analog approach

Quantum simulation can be implemented in pure digital or analog ways, each with their pros and cons. By taking advantage of the universality of a digital route and the efficiency of analog simulation, hybrid digital-analog approaches can enrich the possibilities for quantum simulation. We use a unique hybrid approach to experimentally perform a quantum simulation of phase-controlled dynamics resulting from a closed-contour interaction (CCI) within certain multi-level systems in superconducting quantum circuits. Due to symmetry constraints, such systems cannot host an inherent CCI. Nevertheless, by assembling analog modules corresponding to their natural evolutions and specially designed digital modules constructed from standard quantum logic gates, we can bypass such constraints and realize an effective CCI in these systems. Based on this realization, we demonstrate a variety of related and interesting phenomena, including phase-controlled chiral dynamics, separation of chiral enantiomers, and a new mechanism to generate entangled states based on CCI.

Generalized hydrodynamics revisited

During the past decade a number of attempts to formulate a continuum description of complex states of matter have been proposed to circumvent more cumbersome many-body and simulation methods. Typically these have been quantum systems (e.g., electrons) and the resulting phenomenologies collectively often called "quantum hydrodynamics". However, there is extensive work from the past based in non-equilibrium statistical mechanics on the microscopic origins of macroscopic continuum dynamics that has not been exploited in this context. Although formally exact, its original target was the derivation of Navier-Stokes hydrodynamics for slowly varying states in space and time. The objective here is to revisit that work for the present interest in complex quantum states - possible strong degeneracy, strong coupling, and all space-time scales. The result is an exact representation of generalized hydrodynamics suitable for introducing controlled approximations for diverse specific cases, and for critiquing existing work.

Towards accurate orbital-free simulations: a generalized gradient approximation for the non-interacting free energy density functional

For orbital-free {\it ab initio} molecular dynamics, especially on systems in extreme thermodynamic conditions, we provide the first pseudo-potential-adapted generalized gradient approximation (GGA) functional for the non-interacting free energy. This is achieved by systematic finite-temperature extension of our recent LKT ground state non-interacting kinetic energy GGA functional (Phys. Rev. B \textbf{98}, 041111(R) (2018)). We test the performance of the new functional first via static lattice calculations on crystalline aluminum and silicon. Then we compare deuterium equation of state results against both path-integral Monte Carlo and conventional (orbital-dependent) Kohn-Sham results. The new functional, denoted LKTF, outperforms the previous best semi-local free energy functional, VT84F (Phys.\ Rev.\ B \textbf{88}, 161108(R) (2013)), and provides modestly faster simulations. We also discuss subtleties of identification of kinetic and entropic contributions to non-interacting free-energy functionals obtained by extension from ground state orbital-free kinetic energy functionals.

Spectral Efficiency Analysis of Cell-Free Massive MIMO Systems with Zero-Forcing Detector

In this paper, we firstly derive two approximations of the achievable uplink rate with the perfect/imperfect channel state information (CSI) in cell-free massive multi-input multi-output (MIMO) systems, and all these approximations are not only in the simple, but also converge into the classical bounds achieved in conventional massive MIMO systems where the base-station (BS) antennas are co-located. It is worth noting that the obtained two approximations with perfect CSI could be regarded as the special cases of the obtained two approximations with imperfect CSI when the pilot sequence power becomes infinite, respectively. Moreover, the theory analysis shows that all obtained approximations with perfect/imperfect CSI have an asymptotic lower bound $\fracα{2}\log_2 L$ thanks to the extra {\emph {distance diversity}} offered by massively distributed antennas, where $L$ is the number of BS antennas and the path-loss factor $α>2$, except for the free space environment. Obviously, these results indicate that the cell-free massive MIMO system has huge potential of spectral efficiency than the conventional massive MIMO system with the asymptotically tight bound $\log_2 L$.

Ultra-wideband THz/IR Metamaterial Absorber based on Doped Silicon

Metamaterial-based absorbers have been extensively investigated in the terahertz (THz) range with ever increasing performances. In this paper, we propose an all-dielectric THz absorber based on doped silicon. The unit cell consists of a silicon cross resonator with an internal cross-shaped air cavity. Numerical results suggest that the proposed absorber can operate from THz to mid-infrared, having an average power absorption of >95% between 0.6 and 10 THz. Experimental results using THz time-domain spectroscopy show a good agreement with simulations. The underlying mechanisms for broadband absorptions are attributed to the combined effects of multiple cavities modes formed by silicon resonators and bulk absorption in the substrate, as confirmed by simulated field patterns. This ultra-wideband absorption is polarization insensitive and can operate across a wide range of the incident angle. The proposed absorber can be readily integrated into silicon-based platforms and is expected to be used in sensing, imaging, energy harvesting and wireless communications systems.
