Excited bound states and their role in dark matter production

We explore the impact of highly excited bound states on the evolution of number densities of new physics particles, specifically dark matter, in the early Universe. Focusing on dipole transitions within perturbative, unbroken gauge theories, we develop an efficient method for including around a million bound state formation and bound-to-bound transition processes. This enables us to examine partial-wave unitarity and accurately describe the freeze-out dynamics down to very low temperatures. In the non-Abelian case, we find that highly excited states can prevent the particles from freezing out, supporting a continuous depletion in the regime consistent with perturbativity and unitarity. We apply our formalism to a simplified dark matter model featuring a colored and electrically charged $t$-channel mediator. Our focus is on the regime of superWIMP production which is commonly characterized by a mediator freeze-out followed by its late decay into dark matter. In contrast, we find that excited states render mediator depletion efficient all the way until its decay, introducing a dependence of the dark matter density on the mediator lifetime as a novel feature. The impact of bound states on the viable dark matter mass can amount to an order of magnitude, relaxing constraints from Lyman-$α$ observations.

Sommerfeld enhancement of resonant dark matter annihilation

The dark matter annihilation cross section can be amplified by orders of magnitude if the annihilation occurs into a narrow resonance, or if the dark-matter particles experience a long-range force before annihilation (Sommerfeld effect). We show that when both enhancements are present they factorize completely, that is, all long-distance non-factorizable effects cancel at leading order in the small-velocity and narrow-width expansion. We then investigate the viability of ``super-resonant'' annihilation from the coaction of both mechanisms in Standard Model Higgs portal and simplified MSSM-inspired dark-matter scenarios.

Matching resummed endpoint and continuum $γ$-ray spectra from dark-matter annihilation

For the minimal wino and Higgsino benchmark models we provide accurate energy spectra of high-energy photons from TeV scale dark-matter annihilation $χχ\to γ+X$ by merging electroweak Sudakov resummation near maximal energy with the electroweak parton-shower PPPC4DM, and accounting for the Sommerfeld effect. Electroweak resummation significantly changes the shape of the photon-energy spectrum in the wide range $E_γ\sim (0.6\ldots 1)\, m_χ$ and hence the form of the so-called "line-signal".

NLO electroweak potentials for minimal dark matter and beyond

We calculate the one-loop correction to the static potential induced by $γ$, $W$ and $Z$-exchange at tree-level for arbitrary heavy standard model multiplets. We find that the result obeys a "Casimir-like" scaling, making the NLO correction to the potential a "low-energy" property of the electroweak gauge bosons. Furthermore, we discuss the phenomenology of the NLO potentials, the analytically known asymptotic limits and provide fitting functions in position space for easy use of the results.

Precise yield of high-energy photons from Higgsino dark matter annihilation

The impact of electroweak Sudakov logarithms on the endpoint of the photon spectrum for wino dark matter annihilation was studied intensively over the last several years. In this work, we extend these results to Higgsino dark matter $χ_1^0$. We achieve NLL' resummation accuracy for narrow and intermediate spectral energy resolutions, of order $m_W^2 / m_χ$ and $m_W$, respectively. This is the most accurate prediction to date for the yield of high-energy $γ$-rays from $χ_1^0 χ_1^0 \to γ+ X$ annihilation for the energy resolutions realized by current and next-generation telescopes. We also discuss for the first time the effect of power corrections in $m_W/m_χ$ in this context and argue why they are not sizeable.

Wino potential and Sommerfeld effect at NLO

We calculate the SU(2)$\times$U(1) electroweak static potential between a fermionic triplet in the broken phase of the Standard Model in the one-loop order (NLO). The one-loop correction provides the leading non-relativistic correction to the large Sommerfeld effect in the annihilation of wino or wino-like dark matter particles $χ^0$. We find sizeable modifications of the $χ^0χ^0$ annihilation cross section and determine the shifts of the resonance locations due to the loop correction to the wino potential.
