Fluid Antenna-Assisted MIMO Transmission Exploiting Statistical CSI

In conventional multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) communication systems, the positions of antennas are fixed. To take full advantage of spatial degrees of freedom, a new technology called fluid antenna (FA) is proposed to obtain higher achievable rate and diversity gain. Most existing works on FA exploit instantaneous channel state information (CSI). However, in FA-assisted systems, it is difficult to obtain instantaneous CSI since changes in the antenna position will lead to channel variation. In this letter, we investigate a FA-assisted MIMO system using relatively slow-varying statistical CSI. Specifically, in the criterion of rate maximization, we propose an algorithmic framework for transmit precoding and transmit/receive FAs position designs with statistical CSI. Simulation results show that our proposed algorithm in FA-assisted systems significantly outperforms baselines in terms of rate performance.

Scalable Multiuser Immersive Communications with Multi-numerology and Mini-slot

This paper studies multiuser immersive communications networks in which different user equipment may demand various extended reality (XR) services. In such heterogeneous networks, time-frequency resource allocation needs to be more adaptive since XR services are usually multi-modal and latency-sensitive. To this end, we develop a scalable time-frequency resource allocation method based on multi-numerology and mini-slot. To appropriately determining the discrete parameters of multi-numerology and mini-slot for multiuser immersive communications, the proposed method first presents a novel flexible time-frequency resource block configuration, then it leverages the deep reinforcement learning to maximize the total quality-of-experience (QoE) under different users' QoE constraints. The results confirm the efficiency and scalability of the proposed time-frequency resource allocation method.

Active RIS-Assisted MIMO-OFDM System: Analyses and Prototype Measurements

In this study, we develop an active reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS)-assisted multiple-input multiple-output orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (MIMO-OFDM) prototype compliant with the 5G New Radio standard at 3.5~GHz. The experimental results clearly indicate that active RIS plays a vital role in enhancing MIMO performance, surpassing passive RIS. Furthermore, when considering factors such as complexity, energy consumption, and performance, the comparative evaluation between passive RIS and active RIS reinforces the critical role of active RIS in MIMO systems. These findings underscore the practical significance of active RIS in improving MIMO gain in 5G scenarios.

Massive Wireless Energy Transfer without Channel State Information via Imperfect Intelligent Reflecting Surfaces

Intelligent Reflecting Surface (IRS) utilizes low-cost, passive reflecting elements to enhance the passive beam gain, improve Wireless Energy Transfer (WET) efficiency, and enable its deployment for numerous Internet of Things (IoT) devices. However, the increasing number of IRS elements presents considerable channel estimation challenges. This is due to the lack of active Radio Frequency (RF) chains in an IRS, while pilot overhead becomes intolerable. To address this issue, we propose a Channel State Information (CSI)-free scheme that maximizes received energy in a specific direction and covers the entire space through phased beam rotation. Furthermore, we take into account the impact of an imperfect IRS and meticulously design the active precoder and IRS reflecting phase shift to mitigate its effects. Our proposed technique does not alter the existing IRS hardware architecture, allowing for easy implementation in the current system, and enabling access or removal of any Energy Receivers (ERs) without additional cost. Numerical results illustrate the efficacy of our CSI-free scheme in facilitating large-scale IRS without compromising performance due to excessive pilot overhead. Furthermore, our scheme outperforms the CSI-based counterpart in scenarios involving large-scale ERs, making it a promising solution in the era of IoT.

An Information-Theoretic Characterization of MIMO-FAS: Optimization, Diversity-Multiplexing Tradeoff and $q$-Outage Capacity

Multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) system has been the defining mobile communications technology in recent generations. With the ever-increasing demands looming towards the sixth generation (6G), we are in need of additional degrees of freedom that deliver further gains beyond MIMO. To this goal, fluid antenna system (FAS) has emerged as a new way to obtain spatial diversity using reconfigurable position-switchable antennas. Considering the case with more than one ports activated on a 2D fluid antenna surface at both ends, we take the information-theoretic approach to study the achievable performance limits of the MIMO-FAS. First of all, we propose a suboptimal scheme, referred to as QR MIMO-FAS, to maximize the rate at high signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) via joint port selection, transmit and receive beamforming and power allocation. We then derive the optimal diversity and multiplexing tradeoff (DMT) of MIMO-FAS. From the DMT, we highlight that MIMO-FAS outperforms traditional MIMO antenna systems. Further, we introduce a new metric, namely q-outage capacity, which can jointly consider rate and outage probability. Through this metric, our results indicate that MIMO-FAS surpasses traditional MIMO greatly.

FAS-assisted NOMA Short-Packet Communication Systems

In this paper, we investigate a fluid antenna system (FAS)-assisted downlink non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA) for short-packet communications. The base station (BS) adopts a single fixed antenna, while both the central user (CU) and the cell-edge user (CEU) are equipped with a FAS. Each FAS comprises $N$ flexible positions (also known as ports), linked to $N$ arbitrarily correlated Rayleigh fading channels. We derive expressions for the average block error rate (BLER) of the FAS-assisted NOMA system and provide asymptotic BLER expressions. We determine that the diversity order for CU and CEU is $N$, indicating that the system performance can be considerably improved by increasing $N$. Simulation results validate the great performance of FAS.

Proactive Monitoring via Jamming in Fluid Antenna Systems

This paper investigates the efficacy of utilizing fluid antenna system (FAS) at a legitimate monitor to oversee suspicious communication. The monitor switches the antenna position to minimize its outage probability for enhancing the monitoring performance. Our objective is to maximize the average monitoring rate, whose expression involves the integral of the first-order Marcum $Q$ function. The optimization problem, as initially posed, is non-convex owing to its objective function. Nevertheless, upon substituting with an upper bound, we provide a theoretical foundation confirming the existence of a unique optimal solution for the modified problem, achievable efficiently by the bisection search method. Furthermore, we also introduce a locally closed-form optimal resolution for maximizing the average monitoring rate. Empirical evaluations confirm that the proposed schemes outperform conventional benchmarks considerably.

STAR-RIS Assisted Full-Duplex Communication Networks

Different from conventional reconfigurable intelligent surfaces (RIS), a recent innovation called simultaneous transmitting and reflecting reconfigurable intelligent surface (STAR-RIS) has emerged, aimed at achieving complete 360-degree coverage in communication networks. Additionally, fullduplex (FD) technology is recognized as a potent approach for enhancing spectral efficiency by enabling simultaneous transmission and reception within the same time and frequency resources. In this study, we investigate the performance of a STAR-RIS-assisted FD communication system. The STAR-RIS is strategically placed at the cell-edge to facilitate communication for users located in this challenging region, while cell-center users can communicate directly with the FD base station (BS). We employ a non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA) pairing scheme and account for system impairments, such as self-interference at the BS and imperfect successive interference cancellation (SIC). We derive closed-form expressions for the ergodic rates in both the up-link and down-link communications and extend our analysis to bidirectional communication between cell-center and cell-edge users. Furthermore, we formulate an optimization problem aimed at maximizing the ergodic sum-rate. This optimization involves adjusting the amplitudes and phase-shifts of the STAR-RIS elements and allocating total transmit power efficiently. To gain deeper insights into the achievable rates of STAR-RIS-aided FD systems, we explore the impact of various system parameters through numerical results.

Resource Allocation for Semantic-Aware Mobile Edge Computing Systems

In this paper, a semantic-aware joint communication and computation resource allocation framework is proposed for mobile edge computing (MEC) systems. In the considered system, each terminal device (TD) has a computation task, which needs to be executed by offloading to the MEC server. To further decrease the transmission burden, each TD sends the small-size extracted semantic information of tasks to the server instead of the large-size raw data. An optimization problem of joint semantic-aware division factor, communication and computation resource management is formulated. The problem aims to minimize the maximum execution delay of all TDs while satisfying energy consumption constraints. The original non-convex problem is transformed into a convex one based on the geometric programming and the optimal solution is obtained by the alternating optimization algorithm. Moreover, the closed-form optimal solution of the semantic extraction factor is derived. Simulation results show that the proposed algorithm yields up to 37.10% delay reduction compared with the benchmark algorithm without semantic-aware allocation. Furthermore, small semantic extraction factors are preferred in the case of large task sizes and poor channel conditions.

Pointing-and-Acquisition for Optical Wireless in 6G: From Algorithms to Performance Evaluation

The increasing demand for wireless communication services has led to the development of non-terrestrial networks, which enables various air and space applications. Free-space optical (FSO) communication is considered one of the essential technologies capable of connecting terrestrial and non-terrestrial layers. In this article, we analyze considerations and challenges for FSO communications between gateways and aircraft from a pointing-and-acquisition perspective. Based on the analysis, we first develop a baseline method that utilizes conventional devices and mechanisms. Furthermore, we propose an algorithm that combines angle of arrival (AoA) estimation through supplementary radio frequency (RF) links and beam tracking using retroreflectors. Through extensive simulations, we demonstrate that the proposed method offers superior performance in terms of link acquisition and maintenance.

On Performance of Fluid Antenna System using Maximum Ratio Combining

This letter investigates a fluid antenna system (FAS) where multiple ports can be activated for signal combining for enhanced receiver performance. Given $M$ ports at the FAS, the best $K$ ports out of the $M$ available ports are selected before maximum ratio combining (MRC) is used to combine the received signals from the selected ports. The aim of this letter is to study the achievable performance of FAS when more than one ports can be activated. We do so by analyzing the outage probability of this setup in Rayleigh fading channels through the utilization of Gauss-Chebyshev integration, lower bound estimation, and high signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) asymptotic approximations. Our analytical results demonstrate that FAS can harness rich spatial diversity, which is confirmed by computer simulations.

Fluid Antenna-Assisted Dirty Multiple Access Channels over Composite Fading

This letter investigates the application of the emerging fluid antenna (FA) technology in multiuser communication systems when side information (SI) is available at the transmitters. In particular, we consider a K-user dirty multiple access channel (DMAC) with non-causally known SI at the transmitters, where K users send independent messages to a common receiver with a FA capable of changing its location depending on the channel condition. By connecting Jakes' model to copula theory through Spearman's ρ rank correlation coefficient, we accurately describe the spatial correlation between the FA channels, and derive a closed-form expression for the outage probability (OP) under Fisher-Snedecor F fading. Numerical results illustrate how considering FA can improve the performance of multiuser communication systems in terms of the OP and also support a large number of users using only one FA at the common receiver in a few wavelengths of space.

STAR-RIS Aided Covert Communication

This paper investigates the multi-antenna covert communications assisted by a simultaneously transmitting and reflecting reconfigurable intelligent surface (STAR-RIS). In particular, to shelter the existence of communications between transmitter and receiver from a warden, a friendly full-duplex receiver with two antennas is leveraged to make contributions to confuse the warden. Considering the worst case, the closed-form expression of the minimum detection error probability (DEP) at the warden is derived and utilized as a covert constraint. Then, we formulate an optimization problem maximizing the covert rate of the system under the covertness constraint and quality of service (QoS) constraint with communication outage analysis. To jointly design the active and passive beamforming of the transmitter and STAR-RIS, an iterative algorithm based on globally convergent version of method of moving asymptotes (GCMMA) is proposed to effectively solve the non-convex optimization problem. Simulation results show that the proposed STAR-RIS-assisted scheme highly outperforms the case with conventional RIS.

A Partially Observable Deep Multi-Agent Active Inference Framework for Resource Allocation in 6G and Beyond Wireless Communications Networks

Resource allocation is of crucial importance in wireless communications. However, it is extremely challenging to design efficient resource allocation schemes for future wireless communication networks since the formulated resource allocation problems are generally non-convex and consist of various coupled variables. Moreover, the dynamic changes of practical wireless communication environment and user service requirements thirst for efficient real-time resource allocation. To tackle these issues, a novel partially observable deep multi-agent active inference (PODMAI) framework is proposed for realizing intelligent resource allocation. A belief based learning method is exploited for updating the policy by minimizing the variational free energy. A decentralized training with a decentralized execution multi-agent strategy is designed to overcome the limitations of the partially observable state information. Exploited the proposed framework, an intelligent spectrum allocation and trajectory optimization scheme is developed for a spectrum sharing unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) network with dynamic transmission rate requirements as an example. Simulation results demonstrate that our proposed framework can significantly improve the sum transmission rate of the secondary network compared to various benchmark schemes. Moreover, the convergence speed of the proposed PODMAI is significantly improved compared with the conventional reinforcement learning framework. Overall, our proposed framework can enrich the intelligent resource allocation frameworks and pave the way for realizing real-time resource allocation.

On the Diversity and Coded Modulation Design of Fluid Antenna Systems

Reconfigurability is a desired characteristic of future communication networks. From a transceiver's standpoint, this can be materialized through the implementation of fluid antennas (FAs). An FA consists of a dielectric holder, in which a radiating liquid moves between pre-defined locations (called ports) that serve as the transceiver's antennas. Due to the nature of liquids, FAs can practically take any size and shape, making them both flexible and reconfigurable. In this paper, we deal with the outage probability of FAs under general fading channels, where a port is scheduled based on selection combining. An analytical framework is provided for the performance with and without estimation errors, as a result of post-scheduling delays. We show that although FAs achieve maximum diversity, this cannot be realized in the presence of delays. Hence, a linear prediction scheme is proposed that overcomes delays and restores the lost diversity by predicting the next scheduled port. Moreover, we design space-time coded modulations that exploit the FA's sequential operation with space-time rotations and code diversity. The derived expressions for the pairwise error probability and average word error rate give an accurate estimate of the performance. We illustrate that the proposed design attains maximum diversity, while keeping a low-complexity receiver, thereby confirming the feasibility of FAs.

STAR-RIS Enhanced Joint Physical Layer Security and Covert Communications for Multi-antenna mmWave Systems

This paper investigates the utilization of simultaneously transmitting and reflecting RIS (STAR-RIS) in supporting joint physical layer security (PLS) and covert communications (CCs) in a multi-antenna millimeter wave (mmWave) system, where the base station (BS) communicates with both covert and security users while defeating eavesdropping by wardens with the help of a STAR-RIS. Specifically, analytical derivations are performed to obtain the closed-form expression of warden's minimum detection error probability (DEP). Furthermore, the asymptotic result of the minimum DEP and the lower bound of the secure rates are derived, considering the practical assumption that BS only knows the statistical channel state information (CSI) between STAR-RIS and the wardens. Subsequently, an optimization problem is formulated with the aim of maximizing the average sum of the covert rate and the minimum secure rate while ensuring the covert requirement and quality of service (QoS) for legal users by jointly optimizing the active and passive beamformers. Due to the strong coupling among variables, an iterative algorithm based on the alternating strategy and the semi-definite relaxation (SDR) method is proposed to solve the non-convex optimization problem. Simulation results indicate that the performance of the proposed STAR-RIS-assisted scheme greatly surpasses that of the conventional RIS scheme, which validates the superiority of STAR-RIS in simultaneously implementing PLS and CCs.

MAC Wiretap Channels with Confidential and Open Messages: Improved Achievable Region and Low-complexity Precoder Design

This paper investigates the achievable region and precoder design for multiple access wiretap (MAC-WT) channels, where each user transmits both secret and open (i.e., non-confidential) messages. All these messages are intended for the legitimate receiver (or Bob for brevity) and the eavesdropper (Eve) is interested only in the secret messages of all users. By allowing users with zero secret message rate to act as conventional MAC channel users with no wiretapping, we show that the achievable region of the discrete memoryless (DM) MAC-WT channel given in [1] can be enlarged. In [1], the achievability was proven by considering the two-user case, making it possible to prove a key auxiliary lemma by directly using the Fourier-Motzkin elimination procedure. However, this approach does not generalize to the case with any number of users. In this paper, we provide a new region that generally enlarges that in [1] and provide general achievability proof.

On the Generalization and Advancement of Half-Sine-Based Pulse Shaping Filters for Constant Envelope OQPSK Modulation

The offset quadrature phase-shift keying (OQPSK) modulation is a key factor for the technique of ZigBee, which has been adopted in IEEE 802.15.4 for wireless communications of Internet of Things (IoT) and Internet of Vehicles (IoV), etc. In this paper, we propose the general conditions of pulse shaping filters (PSFs) with constant envelope (CE) property for OQPSK modulation, which can be easily leveraged to design the PSFs with CE property. Based on these conditions, we further design an advanced PSF called $α$-half-sine PSF. It is verified that the newly designed $α$-half-sine PSF can not only keep the CE property for OQPSK but also achieve better performance than the traditional PSFs in certain scenarios. Moreover, the $α$-half-sine PSF can be simply adjusted to achieve a flexible performance tradeoff between the transition roll-off speed and out-of-band leakage.
