Codebook-based Port Selection and Combining for CSI-Free Uplink Fluid Antenna Multiple Access

Fluid antenna multiple access (FAMA) has recently emerged as a simple, promising scheme for large-scale multiuser connectivity, offering strong scalability with low implementation complexity. Nevertheless, most existing FAMA studies focus on downlink transmission under perfect channel state information (CSI) at the receiver side, while the uplink counterpart remains largely unexplored. This paper proposes a novel codebook-based port selection and combining (CPSC) FAMA framework for the uplink communications without CSI at the base station (BS). In the proposed scheme, a predefined codebook is designed and broadcast by the BS. Each user equipment (UE) employs a fluid antenna, acquires its local CSI and independently chooses the most suitable codeword, activates the corresponding fluid antenna ports, and determines the combining weights to achieve a two-way match between the selected codeword and the instantaneous effective channel. The BS then separates the superimposed user signals through codebook-guided projection operations without requiring global CSI or multiuser joint optimization. To handle potential codeword collisions, three lightweight scheduling strategies are introduced, offering flexible trade-offs between signaling overhead and collision avoidance. Simulation results demonstrate that the proposed CPSC-FAMA approach achieves substantially higher rates than fixed-antenna systems while maintaining low complexity. Moreover, the results confirm that amortizing the optimization cost over the UEs effectively reduces the BS processing burden and enhances scalability, making the proposed scheme a strong candidate for future sixth-generation (6G) networks.

Performance Analysis of Fluid Reconfigurable Intelligent Surface over Covert Communications

This paper investigates the impact of the recently proposed concept of fluid reconfigurable intelligent surfaces (FRIS) on covert communications. Specifically, we consider a communication scenario where a legitimate transmitter aims to covertly deliver information to its intended receiver through a planar FRIS, while an adversary attempts to detect whether any transmission is occurring. In this context, we analyze the false alarm (FA) and missed detection (MD) probabilities, and derive a closed-form expression for the covertness outage probability (COP). Furthermore, the success probability is characterized under the optimal detection threshold, providing new insights into the trade-off between covertness and reliable transmission. Numerical results reveal that FRIS provides a clear advantage over fixed-position RIS at low-to-moderate transmit powers by improving reliability and enhancing covertness, while at very high power levels, fixed-position RIS may sustain slightly higher success probability due to reduced leakage toward the adversary.

Multi-Subarray FD-RIS Enhanced Multi-user Wireless Networks: With Joint Distance-Angle Beamforming

The concept of the frequency diverse reconfigurable intelligent surface (FD-RIS) technology has been introduced, which can enable simultaneous implementation of distance-angle beamforming in far-field communication scenarios. In order to improve the managing ability on undesired harmonic signals and the diversity of frequency offsets, this paper presents a novel multi-subarray FD-RIS framework. In this framework, the RIS is evenly divided into multiple subarrays, each employing a distinct time-modulation frequency to enable the diversity of frequency offsets. Additionally, to suppress the undesired harmonic signals, a new time-modulation technique is employed to periodically adjust the phase-shift of each element. Based on the proposed multi-subarray FD-RIS, the signal processing model is first analytically derived. To evaluate the effectiveness of the proposed multi-subarray FD-RIS, we integrate it into a multi-user communication scenario and formulate an optimization problem that aims to maximize the weighted sum rate of all users. This is achieved by jointly optimizing the active beamforming, time delays, and modulation frequencies. Subsequently, a novel iterative algorithm is proposed to effectively solve this problem with low computing complexity. To evaluate the beamforming capability of the proposed multi-subarray FD-RIS,three communication scenarios with varying spatial correlations among users are considered. Simulation results demonstrate that the proposed multi-subarray FD-RIS can significantly enhance and sustain the performance of communication networks by leveraging unique distance-angle beamforming, even when users share the same angular position where traditional RIS experiences severe degradation.

FAS-RSMA: Can Fluid Antennas Elevate RSMA Performance?

As 6G networks demand massive connectivity and stronger interference control, rate-splitting multiple access (RSMA) is attractive because it superposes a common stream and user-private streams and remains effective under imperfect CSIT and heterogeneous traffic. In practical multiuser deployments, two considerations arise: the common stream decoding constraint imposed by the weakest user, and residual inter-user interference can remain non-negligible, particularly in single-input single-output (SISO) broadcast settings and under an imperfect CSIT scenario. Motivated by prior advances of RSMA research, we investigate a complementary mechanism-fluid antenna systems (FAS), with dynamic port reconfiguration supplies adaptive spatial selectivity without altering the RSMA signaling structure. Can FAS help alleviate these considerations and enhance RSMA performance? We develop a tractable correlation-aware analytical framework based on block-correlation models, including constant block correlation (CBC) and variable block correlation (VBC), to capture realistic spatial dependence among ports. Closed-form expressions are derived for outage probability (OP) and average capacity (AC), revealing how port reconfiguration strengthens the weakest effective channel and improves SINR through higher channel gains and lower relative noise impact. Monte Carlo simulations verify the analysis and show that VBC matches simulations more tightly than CBC across all port configurations. Finally, FAS-RSMA provides clear gains over conventional antenna systems and NOMA, achieving lower OP and higher AC by combining RSMA interference management with FAS spatial diversity.

Fluid Antenna System-Enabled UAV Communications in the Finite Blocklength Regime

This paper develops a comprehensive framework for the performance analysis of fluid antenna system (FAS)-enabled unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) relaying networks operating in the finite blocklength regime. Our contribution lies in establishing a rigorous methodology for characterizing system reliability under diverse propagation environments. Closed-form expressions for the block error rate (BLER) are derived by employing a tractable eigenvalue-based approximation of the spatially correlated UAV-to-user link, whose underlying independent diversity components are modeled as Nakagami-$m$ fading. This approach addresses both line-of-sight (LoS) dominant rural and probabilistic non-line-of-sight (NLoS) urban scenarios. Furthermore, a high signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) asymptotic analysis is developed, revealing the fundamental diversity order of the UAV-to-user link. Based on this, we further address the practical issue of energy efficiency. A realistic energy efficiency maximization problem is formulated, which explicitly accounts for the time and energy overhead inherent in the FAS port selection process, a factor often omitted in idealized models. An efficient hierarchical algorithm is then proposed to jointly optimize the key system parameters. Extensive numerical results validate the analysis and illustrate that while FASs can yield substantial power gains, the operational overhead introduces a non-trivial trade-off. This trade-off leads to an optimal number of ports and fundamentally different UAV deployment strategies in rural versus urban environments. This work provides both foundational analysis and practical design guidelines for FAS-enabled UAV communications.

Towards Edge General Intelligence: Knowledge Distillation for Mobile Agentic AI

Edge General Intelligence (EGI) represents a paradigm shift in mobile edge computing, where intelligent agents operate autonomously in dynamic, resource-constrained environments. However, the deployment of advanced agentic AI models on mobile and edge devices faces significant challenges due to limited computation, energy, and storage resources. To address these constraints, this survey investigates the integration of Knowledge Distillation (KD) into EGI, positioning KD as a key enabler for efficient, communication-aware, and scalable intelligence at the wireless edge. In particular, we emphasize KD techniques specifically designed for wireless communication and mobile networking, such as channel-aware self-distillation, cross-model Channel State Information (CSI) feedback distillation, and robust modulation/classification distillation. Furthermore, we review novel architectures natively suited for KD and edge deployment, such as Mamba, RWKV (Receptance, Weight, Key, Value) and Cross-Architecture distillation, which enhance generalization capabilities. Subsequently, we examine diverse applications in which KD-driven architectures enable EGI across vision, speech, and multimodal tasks. Finally, we highlight the key challenges and future directions for KD in EGI. This survey aims to provide a comprehensive reference for researchers exploring KD-driven frameworks for mobile agentic AI in the era of EGI.

Multi-Port Selection for FAMA: Massive Connectivity with Fewer RF Chains than Users

Fluid antenna multiple access (FAMA) is an emerging technology in massive access designed to meet the demands of future wireless communication networks by naturally mitigating multiuser interference through the utilization of the fluid antenna system (FAS) at RF-chain-limited mobile device. The transition from single-active-port to multi-active-port on a shared RF chain for slow FAMA can greatly enhance its multiplexing capability but is not well understood. Motivated by this, this paper proposes and studies three port selection methods: the optimal exhaustive-search port selection (EPS) as a performance upper bound, and two suboptimal, low-complexity algorithms, namely incremental port selection (IPS) and decremental port selection (DPS). Then the performance of multi-active-port slow FAMA is analyzed, and the complexity of the proposed methods is compared. Simulation results indicate that the proposed methods outperform current state-of-the-art multi-port FAMA techniques. In particular, IPS achieves near-optimal performance while maintaining manageable computational complexity. This research provides a more general framework for port selection in FAMA systems.

Asymptotic Performance Analysis of Fluid Antenna Systems: An Extreme Value Theory Perspective

Fluid antenna systems (FAS) allow dynamic reconfiguration to achieve superior diversity gains and reliability. To quantify the performance scaling of FAS with a large number of antenna ports, this paper leverages extreme value theory (EVT) to conduct an asymptotic analysis of the outage probability (OP) and ergodic capacity (EC). The analysis reveals that the OP decays approximately exponentially with the number of antenna ports. Moreover, we establish upper and lower bounds for the asymptotic EC, uncovering its double-logarithmic scaling law. Furthermore, we re-substantiate these scaling laws by exploiting the fact that the mode of the Gumbel distribution scales logarithmically. Besides, we theoretically prove that spatial correlation among antenna ports degrades both OP and EC. All analytical findings are conclusively validated by numerical results.

Fluid Antenna System-Enabled UAV-to-Ground Communications

Fluid antenna systems (FAS) have emerged as a revolutionary technology offering enhanced spatial diversity within a compact form factor. Concurrently, unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) are integral to future networks, necessitating channel models that capture both multipath fading and shadowing. This letter presents a novel performance analysis of a UAV-to-ground link, where the receiver is equipped with an $N$-port FAS operating over the challenging double-shadowing fading channel. By adapting a tractable eigenvalue-based approximation for the correlated FAS ports, we derive new analytical expressions for the end-to-end signal-to-noise ratio statistics, namely the cumulative distribution function and the probability density function. Based on these statistics, we present exact integral expressions for the outage probability, average bit error rate, and average channel capacity. We further derive new, tractable closed-form solutions for the average bit error rate and capacity for the practical dual-rank, independent but non-identically distributed case. Finally, a key asymptotic analysis reveals that the system achieves a multiplicative diversity order of $G_d = M \times d$, which is precisely the product of the FAS spatial rank $M$ and the intrinsic channel diversity order $d$. Simulation results are provided to validate the high accuracy of our entire theoretical framework.

Fluid Reconfigurable Intelligent Surface (FRIS) Enabling Secure Wireless Communications

The concept of fluid reconfigurable intelligent surface (FRIS) upgrades the conventional reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS) paradigm by empowering its reflecting elements with positioning reconfigurability. This letter aims to investigate the use of FRIS to enhance physical-layer security in a system, in which a multi-antenna access point (AP) communicates with a legitimate user device in the presence of an eavesdropper. Unlike RIS with fixed-position elements, FRIS can dynamically select an optimal subset of elements from a larger array of candidate locations. We aim to maximize the secrecy rate by jointly optimizing the AP's transmit beamforming, the selection of FRIS activated elements, and their discrete phase shifts. The resulting problem is a challenging mixed-integer nonlinear program (MINLP), which is NP-hard. To address this, we propose an efficient algorithm based on an alternating optimization (AO) framework. Within this framework, the beamforming subproblem is optimally solved in closed form using the generalized eigenvalue method, while the combinatorial subproblem of joint element selection and discrete phase design is handled via the cross-entropy optimization (CEO) method. Simulation results show that the proposed FRIS design significantly outperforms the conventional RIS counterpart and other baselines, demonstrating the substantial security gains by element positioning as the new degree of freedom (DoF).

Joint Optimization for Multi-User Transmissive RIS-MIMO Systems

Transmissive reconfigurable intelligent surfaces (RIS) represent a transformative architecture for future wireless networks, enabling a paradigm shift from traditional costly base stations to low-cost, energy-efficient transmitters. This paper explores a downlink multi-user MIMO system where a transmissive RIS, illuminated by a single feed antenna, forms the core of the transmitter. The joint optimization of the RIS coefficient vector, power allocation, and receive beamforming in such a system is critical for performance but poses significant challenges due to the non-convex objective, coupled variables, and constant modulus constraints. To address these challenges, we propose a novel optimization framework. Our approach involves reformulating the sum-rate maximization problem into a tractable equivalent form and developing an efficient alternating optimization (AO) algorithm. This algorithm decomposes the problem into subproblems for the RIS coefficients, receive beamformers, and power allocation, each solved using advanced techniques including convex approximation and difference-of-convex programming. Simulation results demonstrate that our proposed method converges rapidly and achieves substantial sum-rate gains over conventional schemes, validating the effectiveness of our approach and highlighting the potential of transmissive RIS as a key technology for next-generation wireless systems.

Frequency Diverse (FD)-RIS-Enhanced Covert Communications: Defense Against Wiretapping via Joint Distance-Angle Beamforming

In response to the security blind zone challenges faced by traditional reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS)-aided covert communication (CC) systems, the joint distance-angle beamforming capability of frequency diverse RIS (FD-RIS) shows significant potential for addressing these limitations. Therefore, this paper initially incorporates the FD-RIS into the CC systems and proposes the corresponding CC transmission scheme. Specifically, we first develop the signal processing model of the FD-RIS, which considers effective control of harmonic signals by leveraging the time-delay techniques. The joint distance-angle beamforming capability is then validated through its normalized beampattern. Based on this model, we then construct an FD-RIS-assisted CC system under a multi-warden scenario and derive an approximate closed-form expression for the covert constraints by considering the worst-case eavesdropping conditions and utilizing the logarithmic moment-generating function. An optimization problem is formulated which aims at maximizing the covert user's achievable rate under covert constrains by jointly designing the time delays and modulation frequencies. To tackle this non-convex problem, an iterative algorithm with assured convergence is proposed to effectively solve the time-delay and modulation frequency variables. To evaluate the performance of the proposed scheme, we consider three communication scenarios with varying spatial correlations between the covert user and wardens. Simulation results demonstrate that FD-RIS can significantly improve covert performance, particularly in angular-overlap scenarios where traditional RIS experiences severe degradation. These findings further highlight the effectiveness of FD-RIS in enhancing CC robustness under challenging spatial environments.

Gaussian Copula-Based Outage Performance Analysis of Fluid Antenna Systems: Channel Coefficient- or Envelope-Level Correlation Matrix?

Gaussian copula has been employed to evaluate the outage performance of Fluid Antenna Systems (FAS), with the covariance matrix reflecting the dependence among multivariate normal random variables (RVs). While prior studies approximate this matrix using the channel coefficient correlation matrix from Jake's model, this work instead employs the channel envelope correlation matrix, motivated by the fact that the multivariate normal RVs are generated by transforming correlated channel envelopes. This raises an open question of whether using the coefficient- or envelope-level correlation matrix yields better accuracy in accessing FAS performance. Toward this end, this paper explores the benefits of using the envelope-level correlation matrix under fully correlated Nakagami-m fading, and develops a method for generating such fading channels for Monte Carlo simulations, which serve as a benchmark for validating the theoretical results. Simulation results confirm the effectiveness of the proposed channel modeling approach and demonstrate the superior accuracy of using the envelope-level correlation matrix, particularly in sparse port deployment and low-outage regime.

Rotatable Antenna System Empowered Low-Altitude Economy: Opportunities and Challenges

Low-altitude economy (LAE) is an emerging technological paradigm that enables continuous airspace coverage at multiple altitudes by providing highly reliable data connectivity for numerous low-altitude applications. However, existing networks cannot sufficiently support LAE development, as current base stations (BSs) are primarily designed for terrestrial users and lack the capability to provide continuous coverage at low altitudes. To overcome these challenges, rotatable antenna system (RAS) is introduced in LAE, enabling flexible beamforming by dynamically adjusting the boresight of directional antennas to extend low-altitude coverage and enhance the stability of data transmission. In this article, we first provide an overview of RAS-empowered LAE applications, including low-altitude communication, sensing, control, and computation. Then, we present two practical RAS deployment strategies for LAE scenarios, namely RAS-aided multi-BS and multi-unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) cooperative coverages, as well as provide detailed discussions on their system architectures and performance benefits. Additionally, key design issues of RAS in LAE are discussed, including channel modeling and estimation, cellular access and interference cancellation, as well as RAS configuration and boresight optimization. Finally, we demonstrate the performance gains of RAS in LAE networks through experimental and simulation results.

Simultaneous Wireless Information and Power Transfer for Fluid Antenna Systems

Fluid antenna is a promising wireless communication technology that enhances communication rate by changing the antenna positions. This article proposes a new communication system that combines multiple-input single-output (MISO) fluid antennas with traditional fixed-position antennas, utilizing antenna position optimization to improve energy harvesting efficiency. In this model, we consider simultaneous wireless information and power transfer (SWIPT) which transmits identical signals from the base station to both information receiver (IR) and energy receiver (ER). We strive to enhance the power delivered to the ER by fine-tuning the positions of transmit and receive fluid antennas, along with optimizing the transmit covariance matrix, subject to a given minimum signal-to-interference-plus-noise ratio (SINR) constraint at the IR. Simulation results indicate that fluid antenna systems significantly enhance the energy harvesting efficiency of the ER compared to traditional fixed-position antennas.

Bridging Theory and Practice in Reconfigurable Fluid Antenna Systems

Fluid antennas, including those based on liquid, mechanical, and pixel-based technologies, are poised to significantly enhance next-generation wireless systems by adaptively optimizing their radiation characteristics. Many theoretical analyses assumed near-instant reconfiguration, perfect channel knowledge, static or slowly varying propagation environments, and ideal material properties that rarely hold in practice. In this article, we dissect these common assumptions and contrast them with the realities of finite actuation time, limited and imperfect channel state information, rapidly changing fading conditions, electromagnetic coupling, and mechanical constraints. Through illustrative examples and simulations, we demonstrate how ignoring these factors can lead to overestimated gains in capacity, coverage, etc.. We then propose modeling refinements, experimental validation methods, and emerging control algorithms that better account for real-world constraints. Our findings highlight that, while reconfigurable antennas remain highly promising for B5G/6G and Internet of things (IoT) applications, their full potential can only be realized by incorporating practical considerations into system design and performance evaluation.

Variable Block-Correlation Modeling and Optimization for Secrecy Analysis in Fluid Antenna Systems

Fluid antenna systems (FAS) are emerging as a transformative enabler for sixth-generation (6G) wireless communications, providing unprecedented spatial diversity through dynamic reconfiguration of antenna ports. However, the inherent spatial correlation among ports poses significant challenges for accurate analysis. Conventional models such as Jakes are analytically intractable, while oversimplified constant-correlation models fail to capture the true behavior. In this work, we address these challenges by applying the variable block-correlation model (VBCM) -- originally proposed by Ramírez-Espinosa \textit{et al.} in 2024 -- to FAS security analysis, and by developing comprehensive optimization methods to enhance analytical accuracy. We derive new closed-form expressions for average secrecy capacity (ASC) and secrecy outage probability (SOP), demonstrating that the VBCM framework achieves simulation-aligned accuracy, with relative errors consistently below $5\%$ (compared to $10$--$15\%$ for constant-correlation models). To maximize ASC, we further design two algorithms: a grid search (GS) method and a gradient descent (GD) method. Numerical results reveal that the VBCM-based approach not only provides reliable insights into FAS security performance, but also yields substantial gains -- ASC improvements exceeding $120\%$ in high-threat scenarios and $18$--$19\%$ performance enhancements for compact antenna configurations. These findings underscore the practical value of integrating VBCM into FAS security analysis and optimization, establishing it as a powerful tool for advancing 6G communication systems.

Antenna Coding Empowered by Pixel Antennas

Pixel antennas, based on discretizing a continuous radiation surface into small elements called pixels, are a flexible reconfigurable antenna technology. By controlling the connections between pixels via switches, the characteristics of pixel antennas can be adjusted to enhance the wireless channel. Inspired by this, we propose a novel technique denoted antenna coding empowered by pixel antennas. We first derive a physical and electromagnetic based communication model for pixel antennas using microwave multiport network theory and beamspace channel representation. With the model, we optimize the antenna coding to maximize the channel gain in a single-input single-output (SISO) pixel antenna system and develop a codebook design for antenna coding to reduce the computational complexity. We analyze the average channel gain of SISO pixel antenna system and derive the corresponding upper bound. In addition, we jointly optimize the antenna coding and transmit signal covariance matrix to maximize the channel capacity in a multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) pixel antenna system. Simulation results show that using pixel antennas can enhance the average channel gain by up to 5.4 times and channel capacity by up to 3.1 times, demonstrating the significant potential of pixel antennas as a new dimension to design and optimize wireless communication systems.
