RIS-Empowered Integrated Location Sensing and Communication with Superimposed Pilots

In addition to enhancing wireless communication coverage quality, reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS) technique can also assist in positioning. In this work, we consider RIS-assisted superimposed pilot and data transmission without the assumption availability of prior channel state information and position information of mobile user equipments (UEs). To tackle this challenge, we design a frame structure of transmission protocol composed of several location coherence intervals, each with pure-pilot and data-pilot transmission durations. The former is used to estimate UE locations, while the latter is time-slotted, duration of which does not exceed the channel coherence time, where the data and pilot signals are transmitted simultaneously. We conduct the Fisher Information matrix (FIM) analysis and derive \text {Cramér-Rao bound} (CRB) for the position estimation error. The inverse fast Fourier transform (IFFT) is adopted to obtain the estimation results of UE positions, which are then exploited for channel estimation. Furthermore, we derive the closed-form lower bound of the ergodic achievable rate of superimposed pilot (SP) transmission, which is used to optimize the phase profile of the RIS to maximize the achievable sum rate using the genetic algorithm. Finally, numerical results validate the accuracy of the UE position estimation using the IFFT algorithm and the superiority of the proposed SP scheme by comparison with the regular pilot scheme.

On Fundamental Limits for Fluid Antenna-assisted Integrated Sensing and Communications for Unsourced Random Access

This paper investigates the unsourced random access (URA) problem for integrated sensing and commutations (ISAC). Recent results reveal that conventional multiple access strategies for ISAC such as treating interference as noise (TIN) and time-division multiple access (TDMA) can be easily overwhelmed and fail to support the increasingly surging number of active users. Hence, the unsourced ISAC (UNISAC) system model has emerged as a promising enabler for the future ISAC networks. To advance this work, we adopt a more realistic channel model and propose to utilize fluid antenna system (FAS) for UNISAC. The achievable performance bound and floor of the proposed FAS-UNISAC are derived to validate the great potential. Our results demonstrate that promising improvement on the available user volume and the sensing and communication capability can be obtained due to the spatial diversities inherent within fluid antenna.

SCNR Maximization for MIMO ISAC Assisted by Fluid Antenna System

The integrated sensing and communication (ISAC) technology has been extensively researched to enhance communication rates and radar sensing capabilities. Additionally, a new technology known as fluid antenna system (FAS) has recently been proposed to obtain higher communication rates for future wireless networks by dynamically altering the antenna position to obtain a more favorable channel condition. The application of the FAS technology in ISAC scenarios holds significant research potential. In this paper, we investigate a FAS-assisted multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) ISAC system for maximizing the radar sensing signal-clutter-noise ratio (SCNR) under communication signal-to-interference-plus-noise ratio (SINR) and antenna position constraints. We devise an iterative algorithm that tackles the optimization problem by maximizing a lower bound of SCNR with respect to the transmit precoding matrix and the antenna position. By addressing the non-convexity of the problem through this iterative approach, our method significantly improves the SCNR. Our simulation results demonstrate that the proposed scheme achieves a higher SCNR compared to the baselines.

UAV-Relay Assisted RSMA Fluid Antenna System: Outage Probability Analysis

This letter studies the impact of fluid antenna system (FAS) technology on the performance of unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV)-assisted multiuser communication networks. Specifically, we consider a scenario where a fixed-position antenna (FPA) base station (BS) serves K FAS-equipped users with the assistance of a UAV acting as an aerial relay. The BS employs rate-splitting multiple access (RSMA), while the UAV operates in half-duplex (HD) mode using the decode-and-forward (DF) strategy. For this system, we derive a compact analytical expression for the outage probability (OP) and its asymptotic behavior in the high signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) regime, leveraging the multivariate t-distribution. Our results show how deploying FAS at ground users (GUs) in UAV-aided communications improves overall system performance compared to using FPA GUs.

Fluid Reconfigurable Intelligent Surfaces: Joint On-Off Selection and Beamforming with Discrete Phase Shifts

This letter proposes a fluid reconfigurable intelligent surface (FRIS) paradigm, extending the conventional reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS) technology to incorporate position reconfigurability of the elements. In our model, a `fluid' element is realized by a dense matrix of subelements over a given space and dynamically selecting specific elements for signal modulation based on channel conditions. Specifically, we consider a FRIS-assisted single-user single-input single-output (SU-SISO) system and formulate an optimization problem that can jointly optimize element selection and their discrete phase shifts to maximize the achievable rate. To address this problem efficiently, we propose an iterative algorithm based on the cross-entropy optimization (CEO) framework. Simulation results reveal that FRIS achieves significant performance gains over traditional RIS.

Phase-mismatched STAR-RIS with FAS-assisted RSMA Users

This paper considers communication between a base station (BS) to two users, each from one side of a simultaneously transmitting-reflecting reconfigurable intelligent surface (STAR-RIS) in the absence of a direct link. Rate-splitting multiple access (RSMA) strategy is employed and the STAR-RIS is subjected to phase errors. The users are equipped with a planar fluid antenna system (FAS) with position reconfigurability for spatial diversity. First, we derive the distribution of the equivalent channel gain at the FAS-equipped users, characterized by a t-distribution. We then obtain analytical expressions for the outage probability (OP) and average capacity (AC), with the latter obtained via a heuristic approach. Our findings highlight the potential of FAS to mitigate phase imperfections in STAR-RIS-assisted communications, significantly enhancing system performance compared to traditional antenna systems (TAS). Also, we quantify the impact of practical phase errors on system efficiency, emphasizing the importance of robust strategies for next-generation wireless networks.

Fluid Antenna System Empowering 5G NR

Fluid antenna system (FAS) is an emerging technology that uses the new form of shape- and position-reconfigurable antennas to empower the physical layer for wireless communications. Prior studies on FAS were however limited to narrowband channels. Motivated by this, this paper addresses the integration of FAS in the fifth generation (5G) orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) framework to address the challenges posed by wideband communications. We propose the framework of the wideband FAS OFDM system that includes a novel port selection matrix. Then we derive the achievable rate expression and design the adaptive modulation and coding (AMC) scheme based on the rate. Extensive link-level simulation results demonstrate striking improvements of FAS in the wideband channels, underscoring the potential of FAS in future wireless communications.

Low Complexity Frequency Domain Nonlinear Self-Interference Cancellation for Flexible Duplex

Nonlinear self-interference (SI) cancellation is essential for mitigating the impact of transmitter-side nonlinearity on overall SI cancellation performance in flexible duplex systems, including in-band full-duplex (IBFD) and sub-band full-duplex (SBFD). Digital SI cancellation (SIC) must address the nonlinearity in the power amplifier (PA) and the in-phase/quadrature-phase (IQ) imbalance from up/down converters at the base station (BS), in addition to analog SIC. In environments with rich signal reflection paths, however, the required number of delayed taps for time-domain nonlinear SI cancellation increases exponentially with the number of multipaths, leading to excessive complexity. This paper introduces a novel, low-complexity, frequency domain nonlinear SIC, suitable for flexible duplex systems with multiple-input and multiple-output (MIMO) configurations. The key approach involves decomposing nonlinear SI into a nonlinear basis and categorizing them based on their effectiveness across any flexible duplex setting. The proposed algorithm is founded on our analytical results of intermodulation distortion (IMD) in the frequency domain and utilizes a specialized pilot sequence. This algorithm is directly applicable to orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) multi-carrier systems and offers lower complexity than conventional digital SIC methods. Additionally, we assess the impact of the proposed SIC on flexible duplex systems through system-level simulation (SLS) using 3D ray-tracing and proof-of-concept (PoC) measurement.

Linear Model of RIS-Aided High-Mobility Communication System

Reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS)-aided vehicle-to-everything (V2X) communication has emerged as a crucial solution for providing reliable data services to vehicles on the road. However, in delay-sensitive or high-mobility communications, the rapid movement of vehicles can lead to random scattering in the environment and time-selective fading in the channel. In view of this, we investigate in this paper an innovative linear model with low-complexity transmitter signal design and receiver detection methods, which boost stability in fast-fading environments and reduce channel training overhead. Specifically, considering the differences in hardware design and signal processing at the receiving end between uplink and downlink communication systems, distinct solutions are proposed. Accordingly, we first integrate the Rician channel introduced by the RIS with the corresponding signal processing algorithms to model the RIS-aided downlink communication system as a Doppler-robust linear model. Inspired by this property, we design a precoding scheme based on the linear model to reduce the complexity of precoding. Then, by leveraging the linear model and the large-scale antenna array at the base station (BS) side, we improve the linear model for the uplink communication system and derive its asymptotic performance in closed-form. Simulation results demonstrate the performance advantages of the proposed RIS-aided high-mobility communication system compared to other benchmark schemes.

A First Look at the Performance Enhancement Potential of Fluid Reconfigurable Intelligent Surface

The fluid antenna concept represents shape-flexible and position-flexible antenna technologies designed to enhance wireless communication applications. In this paper, we apply this concept to reconfigurable intelligent surfaces (RISs), introducing fluid RIS (FRIS), where each tunably reflecting element becomes a fluid element with additional position reconfigurability. This new paradigm is referred to as fluid RIS (FRIS). We investigate an FRIS-programmable wireless channel, where the fluid meta-surface is divided into non-overlapping subareas, each acting as a fluid element that can dynamically adjust both its position and phase shift of the reflected signal. We first analyze the single-user, single-input single-output (SU-SISO) channel, in which a single-antenna transmitter communicates with a single-antenna receiver via an FRIS. The achievable rate is maximized by optimizing the fluid elements using a particle swarm optimization (PSO)- based approach. Next, we extend our analysis to the multi-user, multiple-input single-output (MU-MISO) case, where a multi-antenna base station (BS) transmits individual data streams to multiple single-antenna users via an FRIS. In this case, the joint optimization of the positions and phase shifts of the FRIS element, as well as the BS precoding to maximize the sum-rate is studied. To solve the problem, a combination of techniques including PSO, semi-definite relaxation (SDR), and minimum mean square error (MMSE) is proposed. Numerical results demonstrate that the proposed FRIS approach significantly outperforms conventional RIS configurations in terms of achievable rate performance.

Fluid Antenna Multiple Access Assisted Integrated Data and Energy Transfer: Outage and Multiplexing Gain Analysis

Fluid antenna multiple access (FAMA) exploits the spatial opportunities in wireless channels to overcome multiuser interference by position (a.k.a.~port) switching, which can achieve better performance compared to traditional fixed multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) systems. Additionally, integrated data and energy transfer (IDET) is capable of providing both wireless data transfer (WDT) and wireless energy transfer (WET) services towards low-power devices. In this paper, a FAMA-assisted IDET system is investigated, where a base station (BS) equipped with $N$ fixed antennas provides dedicated IDET services towards $N$ user equipments (UEs). Each UE is equipped with a single fluid antenna, while the power splitting (PS) approach is conceived for coordinating WDT and WET. The outage probabilities of both WDT and WET are derived and approximated into closed-forms, where the fluid antenna (FA) at each UE selects the optimal port to achieve the maximum signal-to-interference-plus-noise ratio (SINR) or the energy harvesting power (EHP). The IDET outage probabilities are defined and subsequently derived and approximated into closed-forms. Further, multiplexing gains of the proposed system are defined and analyzed to evaluate the performace. Numerical results validate the theoretical analysis, while also illustrate that the trade-off is achieved between WDT and WET performance by exploiting different port selection strategies. Furthermore, the number of UEs should be optimized to achieve better IDET performance of the system.

Be Water, My Antennas: Riding on Radio Wave Fluctuation in Nature for Spatial Multiplexing using Programmable Meta-Fluid Antenna

Interference and scattering, often deemed undesirable, are inevitable in wireless communications, especially when the current mobile networks and upcoming sixth generation (6G) have turned into ultra-dense networks. Current approaches relying on multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) combined with artificial-intelligence-aided (AI) signal processing have drawbacks of being power-hungry and requiring wide bandwidth that raise scalability concerns. In this article, we take a radical approach and utilize the channel fading phenomenon to our advantage. Specifically, we propose a novel meta-fluid antenna architecture, referred to as the `fluid' antenna system (FAS), that can freely surf on radio wave fluctuations, like `fluid' figuratively speaking, with fine resolution in space to opportunistically avoid interference, eliminating the need for expensive signal processing. Our experimental results demonstrate that under rich scattering conditions, the proposed meta-fluidic architecture is able to exploit the natural ups and downs of radio waves in space for spatial multiplexing. These breakthrough results show that scattering can be desirable not harmful and interference can be dodged not suppressed, fundamentally changing our perception of fading and our understanding on how interference should be managed in wireless communications networks.

Graph Neural Network Enabled Fluid Antenna Systems: A Two-Stage Approach

An emerging fluid antenna system (FAS) brings a new dimension, i.e., the antenna positions, to deal with the deep fading, but simultaneously introduces challenges related to the transmit design. This paper proposes an ``unsupervised learning to optimize" paradigm to optimize the FAS. Particularly, we formulate the sum-rate and energy efficiency (EE) maximization problems for a multiple-user multiple-input single-output (MU-MISO) FAS and solved by a two-stage graph neural network (GNN) where the first stage and the second stage are for the inference of antenna positions and beamforming vectors, respectively. The outputs of the two stages are jointly input into a unsupervised loss function to train the two-stage GNN. The numerical results demonstrates that the advantages of the FAS for performance improvement and the two-stage GNN for real-time and scalable optimization. Besides, the two stages can function separately.

Physical Layer Security in FAS-aided Wireless Powered NOMA Systems

The rapid evolution of communication technologies and the emergence of sixth-generation (6G) networks have introduced unprecedented opportunities for ultra-reliable, low-latency, and energy-efficient communication. However, the integration of advanced technologies like non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA) and wireless powered communication networks (WPCNs) brings significant challenges, particularly in terms of energy constraints and security vulnerabilities. Traditional antenna systems and orthogonal multiple access schemes struggle to meet the increasing demands for performance and security in such environments. To address this gap, this paper investigates the impact of emerging fluid antenna systems (FAS) on the performance of physical layer security (PLS) in WPCNs. Specifically, we consider a scenario in which a transmitter, powered by a power beacon via an energy link, transmits confidential messages to legitimate FAS-aided users over information links while an external eavesdropper attempts to decode the transmitted signals. Additionally, users leverage the NOMA scheme, where the far user may also act as an internal eavesdropper. For the proposed model, we first derive the distributions of the equivalent channels at each node and subsequently obtain compact expressions for the secrecy outage probability (SOP) and average secrecy capacity (ASC), using the Gaussian quadrature methods. Our results reveal that incorporating the FAS for NOMA users, instead of the TAS, enhances the performance of the proposed secure WPCN.

Downlink OFDM-FAMA in 5G-NR Systems

Fluid antenna multiple access (FAMA), enabled by the fluid antenna system (FAS), offers a new and straightforward solution to massive connectivity. Previous results on FAMA were primarily based on narrowband channels. This paper studies the adoption of FAMA within the fifth-generation (5G) orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) framework, referred to as OFDM-FAMA, and evaluate its performance in broadband multipath channels. We first design the OFDM-FAMA system, taking into account 5G channel coding and OFDM modulation. Then the system's achievable rate is analyzed, and an algorithm to approximate the FAS configuration at each user is proposed based on the rate. Extensive link-level simulation results reveal that OFDM-FAMA can significantly improve the multiplexing gain over the OFDM system with fixed-position antenna (FPA) users, especially when robust channel coding is applied and the number of radio-frequency (RF) chains at each user is small.

Fluid Antennas: Reshaping Intrinsic Properties for Flexible Radiation Characteristics in Intelligent Wireless Networks

Fluid antennas present a relatively new idea for harnessing the fading and interference issues in multiple user wireless systems, such as 6G. Here, we systematically compare their unique radiation beam forming mechanism to the existing multiple-antenna systems in a wireless system. Subsequently, a unified mathematical model for fluid antennas is deduced based on the eigenmode theory. As mathematically derived from the multimode resonant theory, the spectral expansion model of any antennas which occupy variable spaces and have changeable feeding schemes can be generalized as fluid antennas. Non-liquid and liquid fluid antenna examples are presented, simulated and discussed. The symmetry or modal parity of eigenmodes is explored as an additional degree of freedom to design the fluid antennas for future wireless systems. As conceptually deduced and illustrated, the multi-dimensional and continuously adaptive ability of eigenmodes can be considered as the most fundamental intrinsic characteristic of the fluid antenna systems. It opens an uncharted area in the developments of intelligent antennas (IAs), which brings more flexibility to on-demand antenna beam null manipulating techniques for future wireless applications.

Fluid Antenna Index Modulation for MIMO Systems: Robust Transmission and Low-Complexity Detection

The fluid antenna (FA) index modulation (IM)-enabled multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) system, referred to as FA-IM, significantly enhances spectral efficiency (SE) compared to the conventional FA-assisted MIMO system. To improve robustness against the high spatial correlation among multiple activated ports of the fluid antenna, this paper proposes an innovative FA grouping-based IM (FAG-IM) system. A block grouping scheme is employed based on the spatial correlation model and the distribution structure of the ports. Then, a closed-form expression for the average bit error probability (ABEP) upper bound of the FAG-IM system is derived. To reduce the complexity of the receiver, the message passing architecture is incorporated into the FAG-IM system. Building on this, an efficient approximate message passing (AMP) detector, named structured AMP (S-AMP) detector, is proposed by exploiting the structural characteristics of the transmitted signals. Simulation results confirm that the proposed FAG-IM system significantly outperforms the existing FA-IM system in the presence of spatial correlation, achieving more robust transmission. Furthermore, it is demonstrated that the proposed low-complexity S-AMP detector not only reduces time complexity to a linear scale but also substantially improves bit error rate (BER) performance compared to the minimum mean square error (MMSE) detector, thereby enhancing the practical feasibility of the FAG-IM system.
