Possible interaction driven topological phases in (111) bilayers of LaNiO3

We use the variational mean-field approach to systematically study the phase diagram of a bilayer heterostructure of the correlated transition metal oxide LaNiO3, grown along the (111) direction. The Ni 3+ ions with d7 (or eg1) configuration form a buckled honeycomb lattice. We show that as a function of the strength of the on-site interactions, various topological phases emerge. In the presence of a reasonable size of the Hund's coupling, as the correlation is tuned from intermediate to strong, the following sequence of phases is found: (1) a Dirac half-semimetal phase, (2) a quantum anomalous hall insulator (QAHI) phase with Chern number one, and (3) a ferromagnetic nematic phase breaking the lattice point group symmetry. The spin-orbit couplings and magnetism are both dynamically generated in the QAHI phase.

A Phenomenological Theory of the Anomalous Pseudogap Phase in Underdoped Cuprates

The theoretical description of the anomalous properties of the pseudogap phase in the underdoped region of the cuprate phase diagram lags behind the progress in spectroscopic and other experiments. A phenomenological ansatz, based on analogies to the approach to Mott localization at weak coupling in lower dimensional systems, has been proposed by Yang, Rice and Zhang [Phys. Rev. B 73 (2006),174501]. This ansatz has had success in describing a range of experiments. The motivation underlying this ansatz is described and the comparisons to experiment are reviewed. Implications for a more microscopic theory are discussed together with the relation to theories that start directly from microscopic strongly coupled Hamiltonians.

Quantum Hall effects in a Weyl Semi-Metal: possible application in pyrochlore Iridates

There have been lots of interest in pyrochlore Iridates A2Ir2O7 where both strong spin-orbital coupling and strong correlation are present. A recent LDA calculation suggests that the system is likely in a novel three dimensional topological semi-metallic phase: a Weyl semi-metal. Such a system has zero carrier density and arrives at the quantum limit even in a weak magnetic field. In this paper we discuss two novel quantum effects of this system in a magnetic field: a pressure-induced anomalous Hall effect and a magnetic field induced charge density wave at the pinned wavevector connecting Weyl nodes with opposite chiralities. A general formula of the anomalous hall coefficients in a Weyl semi-metal is also given. Both proposed effects can be probed by experiments in the near future, and can be used to detect the Weyl semi-metal phase.

Diagrammatic Quantum Monte Carlo solution of the two-dimensional Cooperon-Fermion model

We investigate the two-dimensional cooperon-fermion model in the correlated regime with a new continuous-time diagrammatic determinant quantum Monte Carlo (DDQMC) algorithm. We estimate the transition temperature $T_{c}$, examine the effectively reduced band gap and cooperon mass, and find that delocalization of the cooperons enhances the diamagnetism. When applied to diamagnetism of the pseudogap phase in high-$T_{c}$ cuprates, we obtain results in a qualitative agreement with recent torque magnetization measurements.

Microscopic model for the semiconductor-to-ferromagnetic-metal transition in FeSi$_{1-x}$Ge$_{x}$ Alloys

The simplified bandstructure introduced by Mazurenko et al to model FeSi is used to analyze the singlet semiconductor to ferromagnetic metal transition in the isoelectronic isostructural alloys, FeSi$_{1-x}$Ge$_x$. The complex bandstructure of the alloy is replaced by an alternating chain of doubly and singly degenerate atoms to represent Fe and Si/Ge respectively. The former(latter) form narrow(broad) bands with a substantial hybridization between them. A substantial onsite repulsion including a Hund's rule coupling is introduced on the Fe sites. The mean field phase diagram contains a first order phase transition from the singlet semiconductor to a ferromagnetic metal with increasing temperature and interaction strength similar to the alloys. The analysis also reproduces the rapid rise of the spin susceptibility in the semiconductor with a crossover to a Curie-Weiss form at higher temperatures. Good agreement is found at zero temperature between the mean field and accurate DMRG calculations.

Andreev and Single Particle Tunneling Spectroscopies in Underdoped Cuprates

We study tunneling spectroscopy between a normal metal and underdoped cuprate superconductor modeled by a phenomenological theory in which the pseudogap is a precursor to the undoped Mott insulator. In the transparent tunneling limit, the spectra show a small energy gap associated with Andreev reflection. In the Giaever limit, the spectra show a large energy gap associated with single particle tunneling. Our theory semi-quantitatively describes the two gap behavior observed in tunneling experiments.

On the Origin of the Checkerboard Pattern in Scanning Tunneling Microscopy Maps of Underdoped Cuprate Superconductors

The checkerboard pattern in the differential conductance maps on underdoped cuprates appears when the STM is placed above the O-sites in the outermost CuO$_{\text{2}}$-plane. In this position the interference between tunneling paths through the apical ions above the neighboring Cu-sites leads to an asymmetric weighting of final states in the two antinodal regions of ${\boldsymbol{k}}$-space. The form of the asymmetry in the differential conductance spectra in the checkerboard pattern favors asymmetry in the localization length rather than a nematic displacement as the underlying origin.

Nature of Stripes in the Generalized t-J Model Applied to The Cuprate Superconductors

Recent transport properties on the stripe phase in La$_{\text{1.875}}$Ba$_{\text{01.25}}$CuO$_{\text{4}}$ by Li \textit{et al.} found 2-dimensional superconductivity over a wide temperature range including a Berezinski-Kosterlitz-Thouless transition at a temperature T=16K, with 3-dimensional superconducting (SC) ordering only at T=4K. These results contradict the long standing belief that the onset of superconductivity is suppressed by stripe ordering and suggest coexistence of stripe and SC phases. The lack of 3-D superconducting order above T=4K requires an antiphase ordering in the SC state to suppress the interlayer Josephson coupling as proposed by Berg \textit{et al.}. Here we use a renormalized mean field theory for a generalized t-J model to examine in detail the energetics of the spin and charge stripe ordered SC states including possible antiphase domains in the SC order. We find that the energies of these modulated states are very close to each other and that the anisotropy present in the low temperature tetragonal crystal structure favors stripe resonating valence bond states. The stripe antiphase SC states are found to have energies very close, but always above, the ground state energy which suggests additional physical effects are responsible for their stability.

Quasiparticles in the Pseudogap Phase of Underdoped Cuprate

Recent angle resolved photoemission \cite{yang-nature-08} and scanning tunneling microscopy \cite{kohsaka-nature-08} measurements on underdoped cuprates have yielded new spectroscopic information on quasiparticles in the pseudogap phase. New features of the normal state such as particle-hole asymmetry, maxima in the energy dispersion and accompanying drops in the spectral weight of quasiparticles agree with the ansatz of Yang \textit{et al.} for the single particle propagator in the pseudogap phase. The coherent quasiparticle dispersion and reduced asymmetry in the tunneling density of states in the superconducting state can also be described by this propagator.

Theory for Superconductivity in Iron Pnictides at Large Coulomb U Limit

Superconductivity in iron pnictides is studied by using a two-orbital Hubbard model in the large U limit. The Coulomb repulsion induces an orbital-dependent pairing between charge carriers. The pairing is found mainly from the scattering within the same Fermi pocket. The inter-pocket pair scatterings determine the symmetry of the superconductivity, which is extended s-wave at small Hund's coupling, and d-wave at large Hund's coupling and large U. The former is consistent with recent experiments of ARPES and Andreev reflection spectroscope.

Quantum Oscillations in Magnetic Field Induced Antiferromagnetic Phase of Underdoped Cuprates : Application to Ortho-II YBa2Cu3O6.5

Magnetic field induced antiferromagnetic phase of the underdoped cuprates is studied within the t-t'-J model. A magnetic field suppresses the pairing amplitude, which in turn may induce antiferromagnetism. We apply our theory to interpret the recently reported quantum oscillations in high magnetic field in ortho-II YBa2Cu3O6.5 and propose that the total hole density abstracted from the oscillation period is reduced by 50% due to the antiferromagnetism.

Effect of superlattice modulation of electronic parameters on superconducting density of states in cuprate superconductors

Recent scanning tunneling microscopy on BSCCO 2212 has revealed a substantial spatial supermodulation of the energy gap in the superconducting state. We propose that this gap modulation is due to the superlattice modulations of the atoms in the structure, and hence the parameters in a microscopic model of the CuO2 plane. The gap modulation is estimated using renormalized mean field theory for a t-t'-J model on a superlattice. The results compare well with experiment.

A Phenomenological Theory of The Pseudogap State

An ansatz is proposed for the coherent part of the single particle Green's function in a doped resonant valence bond (RVB) state by, analogy with the form derived by Konik and coworkers for a doped spin liquid formed by an array of 2-leg Hubbard ladders near half-filling. The parameters of the RVB state are taken from the renormalized mean field theory of Zhang and coworkers for underdoped cuprates. The ansatz shows good agreement with recent angle resolved photoemission (ARPES) on underdoped cuprates and resolves an apparent disagreement with the Luttinger Sum Rule. The transition in the normal state from a doped RVB spin liquid to a standard Landau Fermi liquid, that occurs in the renormalized mean field theory, appears as a quantum critical point characterized by a change in the analytic form of the Green's function. A d-wave superconducting dome surrounding this quantum critical point is introduced phenomenologically. Results are also presented for the Drude weight and tunneling density of states as functions of the hole density.

Low energy physical properties of high-Tc superconducting Cu oxides: A comparison between the resonating valence bond and experiments

In a recent review by Anderson and coworkers\cite{Vanilla}, it was pointed out that an early resonating valence bond (RVB) theory is able to explain a number of unusual properties of high temperature superconducting (SC) Cu-oxides. Here we extend previous calculations \cite{anderson87,FC Zhang,Randeria} to study more systematically low energy physical properties of the plain vanilla d-wave RVB state, and to compare results with the available experiments. We use a renormalized mean field theory combined with variational Monte Carlo and power Lanczos methods to study the RVB state of an extended $t-J$ model in a square lattice with parameters suitable for the hole doped Cu-oxides. The physical observable quantities we study include the specific heat, the linear residual thermal conductivity, the in-plane magnetic penetration depth, the quasiparticle energy at the antinode $(π, 0)$, the superconducting energy gap, the quasiparticle spectra and the Drude weight. The traits of nodes (including $k_{F}$, the Fermi velocity $v_{F}$ and the velocity along Fermi surface $v_{2}$), as well as the SC order parameter are also studied. Comparisons of the theory and the experiments in cuprates show an overall qualitative agreement, especially on their doping dependences.
