One-Shot Operational Quantum Resource Theory

A fundamental approach for the characterization and quantification of all kinds of resources is to study the conversion between different resource objects under certain constraints. Here we analyze, from a resource-non-specific standpoint, the optimal efficiency of resource formation and distillation tasks with only a single copy of the given quantum state, thereby establishing a unified framework of one-shot quantum resource manipulation. We find general bounds on the optimal rates characterized by resource measures based on the smooth max/min-relative entropies and hypothesis testing relative entropy, as well as the free robustness measure, providing them with general operational meanings in terms of optimal state conversion. Our results encompass a wide class of resource theories via the theory-dependent coefficients we introduce, and the discussions are solidified by important examples, such as entanglement, coherence, superposition, magic states, asymmetry, and thermal non-equilibrium.

Quantifying the resource content of quantum channels: An operational approach

We propose a general method to operationally quantify the resourcefulness of quantum channels via channel discrimination, an important information processing task. A main result is that the maximum success probability of distinguishing a given channel from the set of free channels by free probe states is exactly characterized by the resource generating power, i.e. the maximum amount of resource produced by the action of the channel, given by the trace distance to the set of free states. We apply this framework to the resource theory of quantum coherence, as an informative example. The general results can also be easily applied to other resource theories such as entanglement, magic states, and asymmetry.

Efficient classical simulation of Clifford circuits with nonstabilizer input states

We investigate the problem of evaluating the output probabilities of Clifford circuits with nonstabilizer product input states. First, we consider the case when the input state is mixed, and give an efficient classical algorithm to approximate the output probabilities, with respect to the $l_1$ norm, of a large fraction of Clifford circuits. The running time of our algorithm decreases as the inputs become more mixed. Second, we consider the case when the input state is a pure nonstabilizer product state, and show that a similar efficient algorithm exists to approximate the output probabilities, when a suitable restriction is placed on the number of qubits measured. This restriction depends on a magic monotone that we call the Pauli rank. We apply our results to give an efficient output probability approximation algorithm for some restricted quantum computation models, such as Clifford circuits with solely magic state inputs (CM), Pauli-based computation (PBC) and instantaneous quantum polynomial time (IQP) circuits.

Asymmetry and coherence weight of quantum states

The asymmetry of quantum states is an important resource in quantum information processing tasks such as quantum metrology and quantum communication. In this paper, we introduce the notion of $asymmetry~weight$ --- an operationally motivated asymmetry quantifier in the resource theory of asymmetry. We study the convexity and monotonicity properties of asymmetry weight and focus on its interplay with the corresponding semidefinite programming (SDP) forms along with its connection to other asymmetry measures. Since the SDP form of asymmetry weight is closely related to asymmetry witnesses, we find that the asymmetry weight can be regarded as a (state-dependent) asymmetry witness. Moreover, some specific entanglement witnesses can be viewed as a special case of an asymmetry witness --- which indicates a potential connection between asymmetry and entanglement. We also provide an operationally meaningful coherence measure, which we term $coherence~weight$, and investigate its relationship to other coherence measures like the robustness of coherence and the $l_1$ norm of coherence. In particular, we show that for Werner states in any dimension $d$, all three coherence quantifiers, namely, the coherence weight, the robustness of coherence, and the $l_1$ norm of coherence, are equal and are given by a single letter formula.

Max- relative entropy of coherence: an operational coherence measure

The operational characterization of quantum coherence is the corner stone in the development of resource theory of coherence. We introduce a new coherence quantifier based on max-relative entropy. We prove that max-relative entropy of coherence is directly related to the maximum overlap with maximally coherent states under a particular class of operations, which provides an operational interpretation of max-relative entropy of coherence. Moreover, we show that, for any coherent state, there are examples of subchannel discrimination problems such that this coherent state allows for a higher probability of successfully discriminating subchannels than that of all incoherent states. This advantage of coherent states in subchannel discrimination can be exactly characterized by the max-relative entropy of coherence. By introducing suitable smooth max-relative entropy of coherence, we prove that the smooth max-relative entropy of coherence provides a lower bound of one-shot coherence cost, and the max-relative entropy of coherence is equivalent to the relative entropy of coherence in asymptotic limit. Similar to max-relative entropy of coherence, min-relative entropy of coherence has also been investigated. We show that the min-relative entropy of coherence provides an upper bound of one-shot coherence distillation, and in asymptotic limit the min-relative entropy of coherence is equivalent to the relative entropy of coherence.

Distribution of coherence in bipartite systems based on incoherent-quantum coherence measures

The distribution of quantum coherence in multipartite systems is one of the basic problems in the resource theory of coherence. While the usual coherence measures are defined on a single system and cannot capture the nonlocal correlation between subsystems, in order to deal with the distribution of coherence it is crucial to quantify the coherence in bipartite systems properly. Here, we introduce incoherent-quantum (IQ) coherence measures on bipartite systems, which can characterize the correlations between systems. According to the IQ coherence measures on bipartite systems, we find the distribution of coherence of formation and assistance in bipartite systems: the total coherence of formation is lower bounded by the sum of coherence of formation in each subsystem and the entanglement of formation between the subsystems, while the total coherence of assistance is upper bounded by the sum of coherence of assistance in each subsystem and the entanglement of assistance between subsystems. Besides, we also obtain the tradeoff relation between the coherence cost and entanglement cost, distillable coherence and distillable entanglement in bipartite systems. Thus, the IQ coherence measures introduced here truly capture the nonlocal correlation between subsystems and reveal the distribution of coherence in bipartite systems.

Distribution of coherence in multipartite systems under entropic coherence measure

The distribution of coherence in multipartite systems is one of the fundamental problems in the resource theory of coherence. To quantify the coherence in multipartite systems more precisely, we introduce new coherence measures, incoherent-quantum (IQ) coherence measures, on bipartite systems by the max- and min- relative entropies and provide the operational interpretation in certain subchannel discrimination problem. By introducing the smooth max- and min- relative entropies of incoherent-quantum (IQ) coherence on bipartite systems, we exhibit the distribution of coherence in multipartite systems: the total coherence is lower bounded by the sum of local coherence and genuine multipartite entanglement. Besides, we find the monogamy relationship for coherence on multipartite systems by incoherent-quantum (IQ) coherence measures. Thus, the IQ coherence measures introduced here truly capture the non-sharability of quantumness of coherence in multipartite context.

Duality relation between coherence and path information in the presence of quantum memory

The wave-particle duality demonstrates a competition relation between wave and particle behavior for a particle going through an interferometer. This duality can be formulated as an inequality, which upper bounds the sum of interference visibility and path information. However, if the particle is entangled with a quantum memory, then the bound may decrease. Here, we find the duality relation between coherence and path information for a particle going through a multipath interferometer in the presence of a quantum memory, offering an upper bound on the duality relation which is directly connected with the amount of entanglement between the particle and the quantum memory.

Cohering power of quantum operations

Quantum coherence is a basic feature of quantum physics. Combined with tensor product structure of state space, it gives rise to the novel concepts such as entanglement and quantum correlations, which play a crucial role in quantum information processing tasks. However, quantum correlations, especially entanglement, are fragile under decoherence. In this context, very few investigations have touched on the production of quantum coherence by quantum operations. In this paper, we study cohering power -- the ability of quantum operations to produce coherence. First, we provide an operational interpretation of cohering power. Then, we decompose a generic quantum operation into three basic operations, namely, unitary, appending and dismissal operations, and show that the cohering power of any quantum operation is upper bounded by the corresponding unitary operation. Furthermore, we compare cohering power and generalized cohering power of quantum operations for different measures of coherence.

A note on cohering power and de-cohering power

Cohering power and de-cohering power have recently been proposed to quantify the ability of a quantum operation to produce and erase coherence respectively. In this paper, we investigate the properties of cohering power and de-cohering power. First, we prove the equivalence between two different kinds of cohering power for any quantum operation on single qubit systems, which implies that l1 norm of coherence is monotone under Maximally incoherent operation (MIO) and Dephasing-covariant operation (DIO) in 2-dimensional space. In higher dimensions, however, we show that the monotonicity under MIO or DIO does not hold. Besides, we compare the set of quantum operations with zero cohering power with Maximally incoherent operation (MIO) and Incoherent operation (IO). Moreover, two different types of de-cohering power are defined and we find that they are not equal in single qubit systems. Finally, we make a comparison between cohering power and de-cohering power for single qubit unitary operations and show that cohering power is always larger than decohering power.

Resource Theory of Special Antiunitary Asymmetry

We propose the resource theory of a special antiunitary asymmetry in quantum theory. The notion of antiunitary asymmetry, in particular, ${\cal PT}$-asymmetry is different from the usual resource theory for asymmetry about unitary representation of a symmetry group, as the ${\cal PT}$ operator is an antiunitary operator with ${\cal P}$ being any self-inverse unitary and ${\cal T}$ being the time-reversal operations. Here, we introduce the ${\cal PT}$-symmetric states, ${\cal PT}$-covariant operations and ${\cal PT}$-asymmetry measures. For single qubit system, we find duality relations between the ${\cal PT}$-asymmetry measures and the coherence. Moreover, for two-qubit states we prove the duality relations between the ${\cal PT}$-asymmetry measures and entanglement measure such as the concurrence. This gives a resource theoretic interpretation to the concurrence which is lacking till today. Thus, the ${\cal PT}$-asymmetry measure and entanglement can be viewed as two sides of an underlying resource. Finally, the ${\cal PT}$-symmetric dynamics is discussed and some open questions are addressed.

Coherence breaking channels and coherence sudden death

Quantum noise is ubiquitous to quantum systems as they incessantly interact with their surroundings and results in degrading useful resources such as coherence for single quantum systems and quantum correlations for multipartite systems. Given the importance of these resources in various quantum information processing protocols, it is of utmost importance to characterize how deteriorating is a particular noise scenario (quantum channel) in reference to a certain resource? Here we develop a theory of coherence breaking channels for single quantum systems. Any quantum channel on a single quantum system will be called a coherence breaking channel if it is an incoherent channel and maps any state to an incoherent state. We explicitly and exhaustively characterize these coherence breaking channels. Moreover, we define the coherence breaking indices for incoherent quantum channels and present various examples to elucidate this concept. We further introduce the concept of coherence sudden death under noisy evolutions and make an explicit connection of the phenomenon of coherence sudden death with the coherence breaking channels and the coherence breaking indices together with various suggestive examples. Furthermore, for higher dimensional Hilbert spaces, we establish the typicality of the dynamics of coherence under any incoherent quantum channel exploiting the concentration of measure phenomenon.

Bell-type inequality in quantum coherence theory as an entanglement witness

Bell inequality is a mathematical inequality derived using the assumptions of locality and realism. Its violation guarantees the existence of quantum correlations in a quantum state. Bell inequality acts as an entanglement witness in the sense that a pure bipartite quantum state, having nonvanishing entanglement, always violates a Bell inequality. We construct Bell-type inequalities for product states in quantum coherence theory for different measures of coherence, and find that the maximally entangled states violate these inequalities. We further show that Bell-type inequalities for relative entropy of coherence is violated by all two-qubit pure entangled states, serving as an entanglement witness.

Average distance of random pure states from maximally entangled and coherent states

It is well known that random bipartite pure states are typically maximally entangled within an arbitrarily small error. Showing that the marginals of random bipartite pure states are typically extremely close to the maximally mixed state, is a way to prove the above. However, a more direct way to prove the above is to estimate the distance of random bipartite pure states from the set of maximally entangled states. Here, we find the average distance between a random bipartite pure state and the set of maximally entanglement states as quantified by three different quantifiers of the distance and investigate the typical properties of the same. We then consider random pure states of a single quantum system and give an account of the typicality of the average $l_1$ norm of coherence for these states scaled by the maximum value of the $l_1$ norm of coherence. We also calculate the variance of the $l_1$ norm of coherence of random pure states to elaborate more on the typical nature of the scaled average $l_1$ norm of coherence. Moreover, We compute the distance of a random pure state from the set of maximally coherent states and obtain the average distance.

Catalytic coherence transformations

Catalytic coherence transformations allow the otherwise impossible state transformations using only incoherent operations with the aid of an auxiliary system with finite coherence which is not being consumed in anyway. Here we find the necessary and sufficient conditions for the deterministic and stochastic catalytic coherence transformations between pair of pure quantum states. In particular, we show that the simultaneous decrease of a family of Rényi entropies of the diagonal parts of the states under consideration are necessary and sufficient conditions for the deterministic catalytic coherence transformations. Similarly, for stochastic catalytic coherence transformations we find the necessary and sufficient conditions for achieving higher optimal probability of conversion. We, thus, completely characterize the coherence transformations amongst pure quantum states under incoherent operations. We give numerous examples to elaborate our results. We also explore the possibility of the same system acting as a catalyst for itself and find that indeed {\it self catalysis} is possible. Further, for the cases where no catalytic coherence transformation is possible we provide entanglement assisted coherence transformations and find the necessary and sufficient conditions for such transformations.

Fidelity between a bipartite state and another one undergoing local unitary dynamics

The fidelity and local unitary transformation are two widely useful notions in quantum physics. We study two constrained optimization problems in terms of the maximal and minimal fidelity between two bipartite quantum states undergoing local unitary dynamics. The problems are related to the geometric measure of entanglement and the distillability problem. We show that the problems can be reduced to semi-definite programming optimization problems. We give close-form formulae of the fidelity when the two states are both pure states, or a pure product state and the Werner state. We explain from the point of view of local unitary actions that why the entanglement in Werner states is hard to accessible. For general mixed states, we give upper and lower bounds of the fidelity using tools such as affine fidelity, channels and relative entropy from information theory. We also investigate the power of local unitaries and quantification for the commutativity of quantum states, and the equivalence of the two optimization problems.
