Fractal Surface States in Three-Dimensional Topological Quasicrystals

We study topological states of matter in quasicrystals, which do not rely on crystalline orders. In the absence of a bandstructure description and spin-orbit coupling, we show that a three-dimensional quasicrystal can nevertheless form a topological insulator. It relies on a combination of noncrystallographic rotational symmetry of quasicrystals and electronic orbital space symmetry, which is the quasicrystalline counterpart of topological crystalline insulator. The resulting topological state obeys a non-trivial twisted bulk-boundary correspondence and lacks a good metallic surface. The topological surface states, localized on the top and bottom planes respecting the quasicrystalline symmetry, exhibit a new kind of multifractality with probability density concentrates mostly on high symmetry patches. They form a near-degenerate manifold of 'immobile' states whose number scales proportionally with the macroscopic sample size. This can open the door to a novel platform for topological surface physics distinct from the crystalline counterpart.

Bandgap closing at the screw dislocations of WS2 spirals

Van der Waals (vdW) layered transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDCs) materials are emerging as one class of quantum materials holding novel optical and electronic properties. In particular, the bandgap tunability attractive for nanoelectronics technology have been observed up to 1.1 eV when applying dielectric screening or grain boundary engineering. Here we present the experimental observation of bandgap closing at the center of the screw dislocation-driven WS2 spiral pyramid by means of scanning tunneling spectroscopy, which is validated by first-principle calculations. The observed giant bandgap modulation is attributed to the presence of dangling bonds induced by the W-S broken and the enhanced localized stress in the core of the dislocation. Achieving this metallic state and the consequent vertical conducting channel presents a pathway to 3D-interconnected vdW heterostructure devices based on emergent semiconducting TMDCs.

Transmutation elements Re/Ta effect on vacancy formation and dissociation behavior in W

Transmutation elements are the essential products in plasma facing materials tungsten, and have further effects on point defects evolution resulted by radiation. Here, transmutation elements Re and Ta atoms have been selected to assess the effects on property of vacancy and vacancy cluster in W material via first-principles calculations. The formation energy indicates mono-vacancy is more likely to form in W-Re system than pure W and W-Ta system. Both Re and Ta have reduced the diffusion barrier energy in the mono-vacancy migration. The calculation presents that vacancy cluster prefers to grow up by combining another vacancy cluster relative to a single mono-vacancy. Re is favorable to the nucleation and growth of vacancies clusters, while Ta has a suppressive effect on the aggregation of small vacancy cluster. The emphasis analysis is obtained according the volumetric dependent strain. Vacancy dissociation calculations show that the dissociation of vacancy clusters is easier to begin with a single vacancy dissociation process.

Effect of tungsten on vacancy behaviors in Ta-W alloys from first-principles

Alloying elements play an important role in the design of plasma facing materials with good comprehensive properties. Based on first-principles calculations, the stability of alloying element W and its interaction with vacancy defects in Ta-W alloys are studied. The results show that W tends to distribute dispersedly in Ta lattice, and is not likely to form precipitation even with the coexistence of vacancy. The aggregation behaviors of W and vacancy can be affected by their concentration competition. The increase of W atoms has a negative effect on the vacancy clustering, as well as delays the vacancy nucleation process, which is favorable to the recovery of point defects. Our results are in consistent with the defect evolution observed in irradiation experiments in Ta-W alloys. Our calculations suggest that Ta is a potential repairing element that can be doped into Ta-based materials to improve their radiation resistance.

The Ratio Law of the Structure Evolution and Stability for Ti$_n$O$_m$ ($n=3$-$18$, $m=1$-$2n$) Clusters

Most theoretical investigations about titanium oxide clusters focus on (TiO$_2$)$_n$. However, many Ti$_n$O$_m$ clusters with $m\neq 2n$ are produced experimentally. In this work, first-principles calculations are performed to probe the evolution of Ti$_n$O$_m$ clusters. Our investigations show that for $n=3$-$11$, there exist one relatively stable specie; while for $n=12$-$18$, there are two relatively stable species: Ti-rich and O-rich species. HOMO-LOMO calculations show that the gap can be tuned by changing the size and configurations of Ti$_n$O$_m$ clusters. Our investigation provides insights into the evolution of cluster-to-bulk process in titanium oxide.

Bond ordering and phase transitions in Na$_{2}$IrO$_{3}$ under high pressure

The Kitaev model of spin-1/2 on a honeycomb lattice supports degenerate topological ground states and may be useful in topological quantum computation. Na$_{2}$IrO$_{3}$ with honeycomb lattice of Ir ions have been extensively studied as candidates for the realization of the this model, due to the effective $J_{\text{eff}}=1/2$ low-energy excitations produced by spin-orbit and crystal-field effect. As the eventual realization of Kitaev model has remained evasive, it is highly desirable and challenging to tune the candidate materials toward such end. It is well known external pressure often leads to dramatic changes to the geometric and electronic structure of materials. In this work, the high pressure phase diagram of Na$_{2}$IrO$_{3}$ is examined by first-principles calculations. It is found that Na$_{2}$IrO$_{3}$ undergoes a sequence of structural and magnetic phase transitions, from the magnetically ordered phase with space group $C2/m$ to two bond-ordered non-magnetic phases. The low-energy excitations in these high-pressure phases can be well described by the $J_{\text{eff}}=1/2$ states.

Electric control of the edge magnetization in zigzag stanene nanoribbon

There has been tremendous interest in manipulating electron and hole-spin states in low-dimensional structures for electronic and spintronic applications. We study the edge magnetic coupling and anisotropy in zigzag stanene nanoribbons, by first-principles calculations. Taking into account considerable spin-orbit coupling and ferromagnetism at each edge, zigzag stanene nanoribbon is insulating and its band gap depends on the inter-edge magnetic coupling and the magnetization direction. Especially for nanoribbon edges with out-of-plane antiferromagnetic coupling, two non-degenerate valleys of edge states emerge and the spin degeneracy is tunable by a transverse electric field, which give full play to spin and valley degrees of freedom. More importantly, both the magnetic order and anisotropy can be selectively controlled by electron and hole doping, demonstrating a readily accessible gate-induced modulation of magnetism. These intriguing features offer a practical avenue for designing energy-efficient devices based on multiple degrees of freedom of electron and magneto-electric couplings.

A second mapping method in generalized discrete singular convolution algorithm: regularizing singularities for one electron system

A second mapping method is introduced in the generalized discrete singular convolution algorithm. The mapping approaches are adopted to regularize singularities for one electron system. The applications of the two mapping methods are generalized from the radial hydrogen problem to the one-dimensional hydrogen problem. Three mapping functions are chosen: the square-root mapping function, the cube-root mapping function, and the logarithm mapping function. However, the present mapping approaches fail in both the two-dimensional and three-dimensional hydrogen problems, because the wavefunctions of s-states at the nuclei are not correct.

Computational Study of the Magnetic Structure of Na$_2$IrO$_3$

The magnetic structure of honeycomb iridate Na$_2$IrO$_3$ is of paramount importance to its exotic properties. The magnetic order is established experimentally to be zigzag antiferromagnetic. However, the previous assignment of ordered moment to the $\bm{a}$-axis is tentative. We examine the magnetic structure of Na$_{2}$IrO$_{3}$ using first-principles methods. Our calculations reveal that total energy is minimized when the zigzag antiferromagnetic order is magnetized along $\bm{g}\approx\bm{a}+\bm{c}$. Such a magnetic configuration is explained by adding anisotropic interactions to the nearest-neighbor Kitaev-Heisenberg model. Spin-wave spectrum is also calculated, where the calculated spin gap of $10.4$ meV can in principle be measured by future inelastic neutron scattering experiments. Finally we emphasize that our proposal is consistent with all known experimental evidence, including the most relevant resonant x-ray magnetic scattering measurements [X. Liu \emph{et al.} {Phys. Rev. B} \textbf{83}, 220403(R) (2011)].
