REASAN: Learning Reactive Safe Navigation for Legged Robots

We present a novel modularized end-to-end framework for legged reactive navigation in complex dynamic environments using a single light detection and ranging (LiDAR) sensor. The system comprises four simulation-trained modules: three reinforcement-learning (RL) policies for locomotion, safety shielding, and navigation, and a transformer-based exteroceptive estimator that processes raw point-cloud inputs. This modular decomposition of complex legged motor-control tasks enables lightweight neural networks with simple architectures, trained using standard RL practices with targeted reward shaping and curriculum design, without reliance on heuristics or sophisticated policy-switching mechanisms. We conduct comprehensive ablations to validate our design choices and demonstrate improved robustness compared to existing approaches in challenging navigation tasks. The resulting reactive safe navigation (REASAN) system achieves fully onboard and real-time reactive navigation across both single- and multi-robot settings in complex environments. We release our training and deployment code at https://github.com/ASIG-X/REASAN.

RESPLE: Recursive Spline Estimation for LiDAR-Based Odometry

We present a novel recursive Bayesian estimation framework using B-splines for continuous-time 6-DoF dynamic motion estimation. The state vector consists of a recurrent set of position control points and orientation control point increments, enabling efficient estimation via a modified iterated extended Kalman filter without involving error-state formulations. The resulting recursive spline estimator (RESPLE) is further leveraged to develop a versatile suite of direct LiDAR-based odometry solutions, supporting the integration of one or multiple LiDARs and an IMU. We conduct extensive real-world evaluations using public datasets and our own experiments, covering diverse sensor setups, platforms, and environments. Compared to existing systems, RESPLE achieves comparable or superior estimation accuracy and robustness, while attaining real-time efficiency. Our results and analysis demonstrate RESPLE's strength in handling highly dynamic motions and complex scenes within a lightweight and flexible design, showing strong potential as a universal framework for multi-sensor motion estimation. We release the source code and experimental datasets at https://github.com/ASIG-X/RESPLE .

IRIS: An Immersive Robot Interaction System

This paper introduces IRIS, an Immersive Robot Interaction System leveraging Extended Reality (XR). Existing XR-based systems enable efficient data collection but are often challenging to reproduce and reuse due to their specificity to particular robots, objects, simulators, and environments. IRIS addresses these issues by supporting immersive interaction and data collection across diverse simulators and real-world scenarios. It visualizes arbitrary rigid and deformable objects, robots from simulation, and integrates real-time sensor-generated point clouds for real-world applications. Additionally, IRIS enhances collaborative capabilities by enabling multiple users to simultaneously interact within the same virtual scene. Extensive experiments demonstrate that IRIS offers efficient and intuitive data collection in both simulated and real-world settings.

Solving Zero-Shot 3D Visual Grounding as Constraint Satisfaction Problems

3D visual grounding (3DVG) aims to locate objects in a 3D scene with natural language descriptions. Supervised methods have achieved decent accuracy, but have a closed vocabulary and limited language understanding ability. Zero-shot methods utilize large language models (LLMs) to handle natural language descriptions, where the LLM either produces grounding results directly or generates programs that compute results (symbolically). In this work, we propose a zero-shot method that reformulates the 3DVG task as a Constraint Satisfaction Problem (CSP), where the variables and constraints represent objects and their spatial relations, respectively. This allows a global symbolic reasoning of all relevant objects, producing grounding results of both the target and anchor objects. Moreover, we demonstrate the flexibility of our framework by handling negation- and counting-based queries with only minor extra coding efforts. Our system, Constraint Satisfaction Visual Grounding (CSVG), has been extensively evaluated on the public datasets ScanRefer and Nr3D datasets using only open-source LLMs. Results show the effectiveness of CSVG and superior grounding accuracy over current state-of-the-art zero-shot 3DVG methods with improvements of $+7.0\%$ (Acc@0.5 score) and $+11.2\%$ on the ScanRefer and Nr3D datasets, respectively. The code of our system is available at https://asig-x.github.io/csvg_web.

A Third-Order Gaussian Process Trajectory Representation Framework with Closed-Form Kinematics for Continuous-Time Motion Estimation

In this paper, we propose a third-order, i.e., white-noise-on-jerk, Gaussian Process (GP) Trajectory Representation (TR) framework for continuous-time (CT) motion estimation (ME) tasks. Our framework features a unified trajectory representation that encapsulates the kinematic models of both $SO(3)\times\mathbb{R}^3$ and $SE(3)$ pose representations. This encapsulation strategy allows users to use the same implementation of measurement-based factors for either choice of pose representation, which facilitates experimentation and comparison to achieve the best model for the ME task. In addition, unique to our framework, we derive the kinematic models with the closed-form temporal derivatives of the local variable of $SO(3)$ and $SE(3)$, which so far has only been approximated based on the Taylor expansion in the literature. Our experiments show that these kinematic models can improve the estimation accuracy in high-speed scenarios. All analytical Jacobians of the interpolated states with respect to the support states of the trajectory representation, as well as the motion prior factors, are also provided for accelerated Gauss-Newton (GN) optimization. Our experiments demonstrate the efficacy and efficiency of the framework in various motion estimation tasks such as localization, calibration, and odometry, facilitating fast prototyping for ME researchers. We release the source code for the benefit of the community. Our project is available at https://github.com/brytsknguyen/gptr.

Joint State and Parameter Estimation Using the Partial Errors-in-Variables Principle

This letter proposes a new method for joint state and parameter estimation in uncertain dynamical systems. We exploit the partial errors-in-variables (PEIV) principle and formulate a regression problem in the sense of weighted total least squares, where the uncertainty in the parameter prior is explicitly considered. Based thereon, the PEIV regression can be solved iteratively through the Kalman smoothing and the regularized least squares for estimating the state and the parameter, respectively. The simulations demonstrate improved accuracy of the proposed method compared to existing approaches, including the joint maximum a posterior-maximum likelihood, the expectation maximisation, and the augmented state extended Kalman smoother.

Co-NavGPT: Multi-Robot Cooperative Visual Semantic Navigation Using Vision Language Models

Visual target navigation is a critical capability for autonomous robots operating in unknown environments, particularly in human-robot interaction scenarios. While classical and learning-based methods have shown promise, most existing approaches lack common-sense reasoning and are typically designed for single-robot settings, leading to reduced efficiency and robustness in complex environments. To address these limitations, we introduce Co-NavGPT, a novel framework that integrates a Vision Language Model (VLM) as a global planner to enable common-sense multi-robot visual target navigation. Co-NavGPT aggregates sub-maps from multiple robots with diverse viewpoints into a unified global map, encoding robot states and frontier regions. The VLM uses this information to assign frontiers across the robots, facilitating coordinated and efficient exploration. Experiments on the Habitat-Matterport 3D (HM3D) demonstrate that Co-NavGPT outperforms existing baselines in terms of success rate and navigation efficiency, without requiring task-specific training. Ablation studies further confirm the importance of semantic priors from the VLM. We also validate the framework in real-world scenarios using quadrupedal robots. On Embedding B-Splines in Recursive State Estimation

We present a principled study on establishing a recursive Bayesian estimation scheme using B-splines in Euclidean spaces. The use of recurrent control points as the state vector is first conceptualized in a recursive setting. This enables the embedding of B-splines into the state-space model as a continuous-time intermediate, bridging discrete-time state transition with asynchronous multisensor observations. Building on this spline-state-space model, we propose the spline-embedded recursive estimation scheme for general multisensor state estimation tasks. Extensive evaluations are conducted on motion tracking in sensor networks with time-difference-of-arrival and time-of-arrival-inertial settings using real-world and real-world-based synthetic datasets, respectively. Numerical results evidently demonstrate several advantages of spline embedding in recursive state estimation over classical discrete-time filtering approaches in terms of tracking accuracy, robustness, and memory efficiency.

Gaussian Process on the Product of Directional Manifolds

We present a principled study on defining Gaussian processes (GPs) with inputs on the product of directional manifolds. A circular kernel is first presented according to the von Mises distribution. Based thereon, the hypertoroidal von Mises (HvM) kernel is proposed to establish GPs on hypertori with consideration of correlated circular components. The proposed HvM kernel is demonstrated with multi-output GP regression for learning vector-valued functions on hypertori using the intrinsic coregionalization model. Analytic derivatives for hyperparameter optimization are provided for runtime-critical applications. For evaluation, we synthesize a ranging-based sensor network and employ the HvM-based GPs for data-driven recursive localization. Numerical results show that the HvM-based GP achieves superior tracking accuracy compared to parametric model and GPs of conventional kernel designs.

Continuous-Time Ultra-Wideband-Inertial Fusion

We introduce a novel framework of continuous-time ultra-wideband-inertial sensor fusion for online motion estimation. Quaternion-based cubic cumulative B-splines are exploited for parameterizing motion states continuously over time. Systematic derivations of analytic kinematic interpolations and spatial differentiations are further provided. Based thereon, a new sliding-window spline fitting scheme is established for asynchronous multi-sensor fusion and online calibration. We conduct a dedicated validation of the quaternion spline fitting method, and evaluate the proposed system, SFUISE (spline fusion-based ultra-wideband-inertial state estimation), in real-world scenarios using public data set and experiments. The proposed sensor fusion system is real-time capable and delivers superior performance over state-of-the-art discrete-time schemes. We release the source code and own experimental data at https://github.com/KIT-ISAS/SFUISE.

Hyperspherical Dirac Mixture Reapproximation

We propose a novel scheme for efficient Dirac mixture modeling of distributions on unit hyperspheres. A so-called hyperspherical localized cumulative distribution (HLCD) is introduced as a local and smooth characterization of the underlying continuous density in hyperspherical domains. Based on HLCD, a manifold-adapted modification of the Cramér-von Mises distance (HCvMD) is established to measure the statistical divergence between two Dirac mixtures of arbitrary dimensions. Given a (source) Dirac mixture with many components representing an unknown hyperspherical distribution, a (target) Dirac mixture with fewer components is obtained via matching the source in the sense of least HCvMD. As the number of target Dirac components is configurable, the underlying distributions is represented in a more efficient and informative way. Based upon this hyperspherical Dirac mixture reapproximation (HDMR), we derive a density estimation method and a recursive filter. For density estimation, a maximum likelihood method is provided to reconstruct the underlying continuous distribution in the form of a von Mises-Fisher mixture. For recursive filtering, we introduce the hyperspherical reapproximation discrete filter (HRDF) for nonlinear hyperspherical estimation of dynamic systems under unknown system noise of arbitrary form. Simulations show that the HRDF delivers superior tracking performance over filters using sequential Monte Carlo and parametric modeling.

Towards High-Performance Solid-State-LiDAR-Inertial Odometry and Mapping

We present a novel tightly-coupled LiDAR-inertial odometry and mapping scheme for both solid-state and mechanical LiDARs. As frontend, a feature-based lightweight LiDAR odometry provides fast motion estimates for adaptive keyframe selection. As backend, a hierarchical keyframe-based sliding window optimization is performed through marginalization for directly fusing IMU and LiDAR measurements. For the Livox Horizon, a newly released solid-state LiDAR, a novel feature extraction method is proposed to handle its irregular scan pattern during preprocessing. LiLi-OM (Livox LiDAR-inertial odometry and mapping) is real-time capable and achieves superior accuracy over state-of-the-art systems for both LiDAR types on public data sets of mechanical LiDARs and in experiments using the Livox Horizon. Source code and recorded experimental data sets are available at https://github.com/KIT-ISAS/lili-om.

Improved Pose Graph Optimization for Planar Motions Using Riemannian Geometry on the Manifold of Dual Quaternions

We present a novel Riemannian approach for planar pose graph optimization problems. By formulating the cost function based on the Riemannian metric on the manifold of dual quaternions representing planar motions, the nonlinear structure of the SE(2) group is inherently considered. To solve the on-manifold least squares problem, a Riemannian Gauss-Newton method using the exponential retraction is applied. The proposed Riemannian pose graph optimizer (RPG-Opt) is further evaluated based on public planar pose graph data sets. Compared with state-of-the-art frameworks, the proposed method gives equivalent accuracy and better convergence robustness under large uncertainties of odometry measurements.
