Observing axions through photon ring dimming of black holes

It is known that magnetic fields exist near black holes and photons can go around black holes due to strong gravity. Utilizing these facts, we can probe hypothetical pseudoscalar particles, so-called axions. In fact, photons can be converted into axions when they propagate in a magnetic field. The conversion of such photons into axions leads to a dimming of the photon ring around the black hole shadow. We show that photon ring dimming can occur efficiently for supermassive black holes. Remarkably, it turns out that the maximal dimming rate of the photon ring is 25%. In the case of M87*, the dimming of 10% will be observed in the X-ray and gamma-ray bands if the angular resolution of $10^{-5}$ arcsec is achieved. The frequency band and the magnitude of the dimming depend on the axion-photon coupling and axion mass. Hence, the distorted spectrum of the photon ring provides a novel tool for detecting axions.

Universal $10^{20}$Hz stochastic gravitational waves from photon spheres of black holes

We show that photon spheres of supermassive black holes generate high-frequency stochastic gravitational waves through the photon-graviton conversion. Remarkably, the frequency is universally determined as $m_e\sqrt{m_e /m_p} \simeq 10^{20} \text{Hz}$ in terms of the proton mass $m_p$ and the electron mass $m_e$. It turns out that the density parameter of the stochastic gravitational waves $ Ω_{ \text{gw}}$ could be $ 10^{-12}$. Since the existence of the gravitational waves from photon spheres is robust, it is worth seeking methods of detecting high-frequency gravitational waves around $10^{20}$Hz.

$O(d,d;\mathbb{Z})$ invariant Fierz-Pauli massive gravity

We consider an $O(d,d;\mathbb{Z})$ invariant massive deformation of double field theory at the level of free theory. We study Kaluza-Klein reduction on $R^{1,n-1} \times T^{d}$ and derive the diagonalized second order action for each helicity mode. Imposing the absence of ghosts and tachyons, we obtain a class of consistency conditions which include the well known weak constraint in double field theory as a special case. Consequently, we find two-parameter sets of $O(d,d;\mathbb{Z})$ invariant Fierz-Pauli massive gravity theories.

The matrix regularization for Riemann surfaces with magnetic fluxes

We consider the matrix regularization of fields on a Riemann surface which couple to gauge fields with a nonvanishing magnetic flux. We show that such fields are described as rectangular matrices in the matrix regularization. We construct the matrix regularization explicitly for the case of the sphere and torus based on the Berezin-Toeplitz quantization, and also discuss a possible generalization to cases with higher genera. We also discuss the matrix version of the Laplacian acting on the rectangular matrices.
