Deep-learning-based on-chip rapid spectral imaging with high spatial resolution

Spectral imaging extends the concept of traditional color cameras to capture images across multiple spectral channels and has broad application prospects. Conventional spectral cameras based on scanning methods suffer from low acquisition speed and large volume. On-chip computational spectral imaging based on metasurface filters provides a promising scheme for portable applications, but endures long computation time for point-by-point iterative spectral reconstruction and mosaic effect in the reconstructed spectral images. In this study, we demonstrated on-chip rapid spectral imaging eliminating the mosaic effect in the spectral image by deep-learning-based spectral data cube reconstruction. We experimentally achieved four orders of magnitude speed improvement than iterative spectral reconstruction and high fidelity of spectral reconstruction over 99% for a standard color board. In particular, we demonstrated video-rate spectral imaging for moving objects and outdoor driving scenes with good performance for recognizing metamerism, where the concolorous sky and white cars can be distinguished via their spectra, showing great potential for autonomous driving and other practical applications in the field of intelligent perception.

Angle-insensitive spectral imaging based on topology-optimized plasmonic metasurfaces

On-chip spectral imaging based on engineered spectral modulation and computational spectral reconstruction provides a promising scheme for portable spectral cameras. However, the angle dependence of modulation units results in the angle sensitivity of spectral imaging, which limits its practical applications. Here, we proposed a design for angle-robust spectral recovery based on a group of topology-optimized plasmonic metasurface units under a 30° field-of-view, and demonstrate angle-insensitive on-chip spectral imaging in the wavelength range of 450 to 750 nm for average polarization. Furthermore, we experimentally verified the angle-insensitive spectral filtering effects of the fabricated metasurface units, and demonstrated angle-robust spectral reconstruction with a fidelity of 98%. Our approach expands the application scale of spectral imaging, and provides a guidance for designing other angle-robust devices.

High-dimensional quantum key distribution using energy-time entanglement over 242 km partially deployed fiber

Entanglement-based quantum key distribution (QKD) is an essential ingredient in quantum communication, owing to the property of source-independent security and the potential on constructing large-scale quantum communication networks. However, implementation of entanglement-based QKD over long-distance optical fiber links is still challenging, especially over deployed fibers. In this work, we report an experimental QKD using energy-time entangled photon pairs that transmit over optical fibers of 242 km (including a section of 19 km deployed fibers). High-quality entanglement distribution is verified by Franson-type interference with raw fringe visibilities of 94.1$\pm$1.9% and %92.4$\pm$5.4% in two non-orthogonal bases. The QKD is realized through the protocol of dispersive-optics QKD. A high-dimensional encoding is applied to utilize coincidence counts more efficiently. Using reliable, high-accuracy time synchronization technology, the system operates continuously for more than 7 days, even without active polarization or phase calibration. We ultimately generate secure keys with secure key rates of 0.22 bps and 0.06 bps in asymptotic and finite-size regime, respectively. This system is compatible with existing telecommunication infrastructures, showing great potential on realizing large-scale quantum communication networks in future.

Programmable Unitary Operations for Orbital Angular Momentum Encoded States

We have proposed and demonstrated a scalable and efficient scheme for programmable unitary operations in orbital angular momentum (OAM) domain. Based on matrix decomposition into diagonal and Fourier factors, arbitrary matrix operators can be implemented only by diagonal matrices alternately acting on orbital angular momentum domain and azimuthal angle domain, which are linked by Fourier transform. With numerical simulations, unitary matrices with dimensionality of 3*3 are designed and discussed for OAM domain. Meanwhile, the parallelism of our proposed scheme is also presented with two 3*3 matrices. Furthermore, as an alternative to verify our proposal, proof of principle experiments have been performed on path domain with the same matrix decomposition method, in which an average fidelity of 0.97 is evaluated through 80 experimental results with dimensionality of 3*3.

Controllable Entanglement Distribution Network Based on Silicon Quantum Photonics

The entanglement distribution network connects remote users through sharing entanglement resources, which is essential for realizing quantum internet. We proposed a controllable entanglement distribution network (c-EDN) based on a silicon quantum photonic chip. The entanglement resources were generated by a quantum light source array based on spontaneous four-wave mixing (SFWM) in silicon waveguides and distributed to different users through time-reversed Hong-Ou-Mandel interferences in on-chip Mach-Zehnder interferometers with thermal phase shifters. A chip sample was designed and fabricated, supporting a c-EDN with 3 subnets and 24 users. The network topology of entanglement distributions could be reconfigured in three network states by controlling the quantum interferences through the phase shifters, which was demonstrated experimentally. Furthermore, a reconfigurable entanglement-based QKD network was realized as an application of the c-EDN. The reconfigurable network topology makes the c-EDN suitable for future quantum networks requiring complicated network control and management. Moreover, it is also shows that silicon quantum photonic chips have great potential for large-scale c-EDN, thanks to their capacities on generating and manipulating plenty of entanglement resources.

A photon counting reconstructive spectrometer combining metasurfaces and superconducting nanowire single-photon detectors

Faint light spectroscopy has many important applications such as fluorescence spectroscopy, lidar and astronomical observations. However, long measurement time limit its application on real-time measurement. In this work, a photon counting reconstructive spectrometer combining metasurfaces and superconducting nanowire single photon detectors (SNSPDs) was proposed. A prototype device was fabricated on a silicon on isolator (SOI) substrate, and its performance was characterized. Experiment results show that this device support spectral reconstruction of mono-color lights with a resolution of 2 nm in the wavelength region of 1500 nm ~ 1600 nm. The detection efficiency of this device is 1.4% ~ 3.2% in this wavelength region. The measurement time required by this photon counting reconstructive spectrometer was also investigated experimentally, showing its potential to be applied in the scenarios requiring real-time measurement.

On-chip mechanical exceptional points based on an optomechanical zipper cavity

Exceptional points (EPs) represent a distinct type of spectral singularity in non-Hermitian systems, and intriguing physics concepts have been studied with optical EPs recently. As a system beyond photonics, the mechanical oscillators coupling with many physical systems are expected to be further exploited EPs for mechanical sensing, topology energy transfer, nonreciprocal dynamics etc. In this study, we demonstrated on-chip mechanical EPs with a silicon optomechanical zipper cavity, wherein two near-degenerate mechanical breathing modes are coupled via a single co-localized optical mode. By tailoring the dissipative and coherent couplings between two mechanical oscillators, the spectral splitting with 1/2 order response, a distinctive feature of EP, was observed successfully. Our work provides an integrated platform for investigating the physics related to mechanical EPs on silicon chips and suggests their possible applications for ultrasensitive measurements.

Room-temperature on-chip generation of heralded single photons with switchable orbital angular momentum

In quantum optics, orbital angular momentum (OAM) is very promising to achieve high-dimensional quantum states due to the nature of infinite and discrete eigenvalue, which is quantized by the topological charge of l. Here, a heralded single-photon source with switchable OAM modes is proposed and demonstrated on silicon chip. At room-temperature, the heralded single photons with 11 OAM modes (l=2~6, -6~-1) have been successfully generated and switched through thermo-optical effect. We believe that such an integrated quantum source with multiple OAM modes and operating at room-temperature would provide a practical platform for high-dimensional quantum information processing. Moreover, our proposed architecture can also be extended to other material systems to further improve the performance of OAM quantum source.

Generation and dynamical manipulation of polarization entangled Bell states by a silicon quantum photonic circuit

A silicon quantum photonic circuit was proposed and demonstrated as an integrated quantum light source for telecom band polarization entangled Bell state generation and dynamical manipulation. Biphoton states were firstly generated in four silicon waveguides by spontaneous four wave mixing. They were transformed to polarization entangled Bell states through on-chip quantum interference and quantum superposition, and then coupled to optical fibers. The property of polarization entanglement in generated photon pairs was demonstrated by two-photon interferences under two non-orthogonal polarization bases. The output state could be dynamically switched between two polarization entangled Bell states, which was demonstrated by the experiment of simplified Bell state measurement. The experiment results indicate that its manipulation speed supported a modulation rate of several tens kHz, showing its potential on applications of quantum communication and quantum information processing requiring dynamical quantum entangled Bell state control.

Quantum communication is developed owing to the theoretically proven security of quantum mechanics, which may become the main technique in future information security. However, most studies and implementations are limited to two or several parties. Herein, we propose a fully connected quantum communication network without a trusted node for a large number of users. Using flexible wavelength demultiplex/multiplex and space multiplex technologies, 40 users are fully connected simultaneously without a trusted node by a broadband energy-time entangled photon pair source. This network architecture may be widely deployed in real scenarios such as companies, schools, and communities owing to its simplicity, scalability, and high efficiency.

Programmable coherent linear quantum operations with high-dimensional optical spatial modes

A simple and flexible scheme for high-dimensional linear quantum operations on optical transverse spatial modes is demonstrated. The quantum Fourier transformation (QFT) and quantum state tomography (QST) via symmetric informationally complete positive operator-valued measures (SIC POVMs) are implemented with dimensionality of 15. The matrix fidelity of QFT is 0.85, while the statistical fidelity of SIC POVMs and fidelity of QST are ~0.97 and up to 0.853, respectively. We believe that our device has the potential for further exploration of high-dimensional spatial entanglement provided by spontaneous parametric down conversion in nonlinear crystals.

An entanglement-based quantum network based on symmetric dispersive optics quantum key distribution

Quantum key distribution (QKD) is a crucial technology for information security in the future. Developing simple and efficient ways to establish QKD among multiple users are important to extend the applications of QKD in communication networks. Herein, we proposed a scheme of symmetric dispersive optics QKD (DO-QKD) and demonstrated an entanglement-based quantum network based on it. In the experiment, a broadband entanglement photon pair source was shared by end users via wavelength and space division multiplexing. The wide spectrum of generated entangled photon pairs was divided into 16 combinations of frequency-conjugate channels. Photon pairs in each channel combination supported a fully-connected subnet with 8 users by a passive beam splitter. Eventually, it showed that an entanglement-based QKD network over 100 users could be supported by one entangled photon pair source in this architecture. It has great potential on applications of local quantum networks with large user number.

Phonon and Photon Lasing Dynamics in Optomechanical Cavities

Lasers differ from other light sources in that they are coherent, and their coherence makes them indispensable to both fundamental research and practical application. In optomechanical cavities, phonon and photon lasing is facilitated by the ability of photons and phonons to interact intensively and excite one another coherently. The lasing linewidths of both phonons and photons are critical for practical application. However, thus far, these linewidths have not been explored in detail in cavity optomechanical systems. This study investigates the underlying dynamics of lasing in optomechanical cavities and experimentally demonstrates simultaneous photon and phonon lasing with narrow linewidths in a silicon optomechanical crystal cavity. We find that the linewidths can be accounted for by two distinct physical mechanisms in two regimes, namely the normal regime and the reversed regime, where the intrinsic optical decay rate is either larger or smaller than the intrinsic mechanical decay rate. In the normal regime, an ultra-narrow spectral linewidth of 5.4 kHz for phonon lasing at 6.22 GHz can be achieved regardless of the linewidth of the pump light, while these results are counterintuitively unattainable for photon lasing in the reversed regime. These results pave the way towards harnessing the coherence of both photons and phonons in silicon photonic devices and reshaping their spectra, potentially opening up new technologies in sensing, metrology, spectroscopy, and signal processing, as well as in applications requiring sources that offer an ultra-high degree of coherence.

Phonon-laser sensing in a hetero optomechanical crystal cavity

Micro- and nanomechanical resonators have emerged as promising platforms for sensing a broad range of physical properties such as mass, force, torque, magnetic field, and acceleration. The sensing performance relies critically on the motional mass, the mechanical frequency, and the linewidth of the mechanical resonator. Here, we demonstrate a hetero optomechanical crystal (OMC) cavity based on a silicon nanobeam structure. The cavity supports phonon lasing in a fundamental mechanical mode with a frequency of 5.91 GHz, an effective mass of 116 fg, and a mechanical linewidth narrowing from 3.3 MHz to 5.2 kHz, while the optomechanical coupling rate of is as high as 1.9 MHz. With this phonon laser, the on-chip sensing with a resolution of $δ$$λ$/$λ$ = 1.0*10-8 can be attained, which is at least two orders of magnitude larger than that obtained with conventional silicon-based sensors. The use of a silicon-based hetero OMC cavity that harnesses phonon lasing could pave the way towards exciting, high-precision sensors that lend themselves to silicon monolithic integration and offer unprecedented sensitivity for broad physical sensing applications.

Identifying orbital angular momentum of vectorial vortices with Pancharatnam phase and Stokes parameters

In this work, an explicit formula is deduced for identifying the orbital angular moment (OAM) of vectorial vortex with space-variant state of polarization (SOP). Different to scalar vortex, the OAM of vectorial vortex can be attributed to two parts: the azimuthal gradient of Pancharatnam phase and the product of the azimuthal gradient of orientation angle of SOP and relevant solid angle on the Poincaré sphere. With our formula, a geometrical description for OAM of light beams can be achieved under the framework of the traditional Poincaré sphere. Numerical simulations for two types of vectorial vortices have been carried on to confirm our presented formula and demonstrate the geometrical description of OAM. Furthermore, the finding will pave the way for precise characterization of OAM charge of vectorial vortices.

Universal linear optical operations on discrete phase-coherent spatial modes

Linear optical operations are fundamental and significant for both quantum mechanics and classical technologies. We demonstrate a non-cascaded approach to perform arbitrary unitary and non-unitary linear operations for N-dimensional phase-coherent spatial modes with meticulously designed phase gratings. As implemented on spatial light modulators (SLMs), the unitary transformation matrix has been realized with dimensionalities ranging from 7 to 24 and the corresponding fidelities are from 95.1% to 82.1%. For the non-unitary operators, a matrix is presented for the tomography of a 4-level quantum system with a fidelity of 94.9%. Thus, the linear operator has been successfully implemented with much higher dimensionality than that in previous reports. It should be mentioned that our method is not limited to SLMs and can be easily applied on other devices. Thus we believe that our proposal provides another option to perform linear operation with a simple, fixed, error-tolerant and scalable scheme.

Identifying the tilt angle and correcting the orbital angular momentum spectrum dispersion of misaligned light beam

The axis tilt of light beam in optical system would introduce the dispersion of orbital angular momentum (OAM) spectrum. To deal with it, a two-step method is proposed and demonstrated. First, the tilt angle of optical axis is identified with a deduced relation between the tilt angle and the variation of OAM topological charges with different reference axes, which is obtained with the help of a charge coupled device (CCD) camera. In our experiments, the precision of measured tilt angle is about 10-4rad with OAM orders of -3~3. Using the measured angle value, the additional phase delay due to axis tilt can be calculated so that the dispersion of OAM spectrum can be corrected with a simple formula while the optical axis is not aligned. The experimental results indicate that the original OAM spectrum has been successfully extracted for not only the pure OAM state but also the superposed OAM states.
