High-resolution decomposition of canonical Hamiltonian systems

We identify the topological and dynamical conditions for a Hamiltonian system to possess port-Hamiltonian reformulations with increasing resolution of structural detail that remains hidden in the Hamiltonian theory. We find that the principally attainable resolution grows exponentially with the number of factor manifolds into which the configuration space of a canonical Hamiltonian system decomposes and is tempered only by degeneracies of the original Hamiltonian.

Hybrid Schr\"odinger-Liouville and projective dynamics

Quantum dynamics provides the arguably most fundamental example of hybrid dynamics: As long as no measurement takes place, the system state is governed by the Schr\"odinger-Liouville differential equation, which is however interrupted and replaced by projective dynamics at times when measurements take place. We show how this alternatingly continuous and projective evolution can be cast in form of one single differential equation for a refined state space manifold and thus be made amenable to standard port-theoretic analysis and control techniques.

Port-Hamiltonian systems with energy and power ports

We extend the port-Hamiltonian framework defined with respect to a Lagrangian submanifold and a Dirac structure by augmenting the Lagrangian submanifold with the space of external variables. The new pair of conjugated variables is called energy port. We show that in the most general case, the extension describes constrained Hamiltonian systems whose Hamiltonian function depends on inputs.
