Critical Ising model as the $M(4,3)$ minimal model of conformal field theory

We construct a linear map from the space of spin polynomials in the critical Ising model on a lattice to the state space of the $M(4,3)$ minimal model of conformal field theory. The kernel of the map consists precisely of null fields, i.e., spin polynomials that vanish in all correlations. For a polynomial $\Op$ which is not a null field, we define its scaling dimension $Δ_{\Op}\in\Z_{\geq0}\cup(\Z_{\geq0}+\frac{1}{8}),$ to be the lowest $\Loper{0}+\Loperbar{0}$ eigenvalue in the decomposition of its image into homogeneous components. We show that as the mesh size $δ$ goes to zero, the rescaled field $δ^{-Δ_{\Op}}\Op$ has a non-trivial scaling limit, when inserted in correlations with other such fields. Moreover, all these limits can be expressed in terms of correlations of primary fields of $M(4,3)$ and the Virasoro action in the continuum. The highest weight vectors of $M(4,3)$, the joint eigenvectors of $\Loper{0}$ and $\Loperbar{0}$ with the same eigenvalues $0,1/16,1/2$ for both, are the images of the constant $1$, the spin at a single lattice vertex, and the energy at a single lattice edge, respectively. For the proof, we construct a map from a larger lattice field space, accommodating also fermion and disorder insertions, to a direct sum of two fermionic Fock spaces. This direct sum contains contains the state spaces of both the $M(4,3)$ and the free fermion CFT. The main technical ingredient of the proof is a new version of the exact fermionic current action on the space of lattice local fields due to C. Hongler, K.K. and F. Viklund, combined with some new advances in discrete complex analysis. Our results are valid on arbitrary isoradial graphs.

Virasoro algebra and Sugawara constructions formally in Lean

We formalize in Lean certain calculational proofs about infinite-dimensional Lie algebras. Specifically, we construct the Virasoro algebra as a central extension of the Witt algebra associated with a nontrivial 2-cocycle, and we construct representations of the Virasoro algebra by Sugawara constructions.

Fock space of local fields of the discrete GFF and its scaling limit bosonic CFT

To connect conformal field theories (CFT) to probabilistic lattice models, recent works [HKV22, Ada23] have introduced a novel definition of local fields of the lattice models. Local fields in this picture are probabilistically concrete: they are built from random variables in the model. The key insight is that discrete complex analysis ideas allow to equip the space of local fields with the main structure of a CFT: a representation of the Virasoro algebra. In this article, for the first time, we fully analyze the structure of the space of local fields of a lattice model as a representation, and use this to establish a one-to-one correspondence between the local fields of a lattice model and those of a conformal field theory. The CFT we consider is probabilistically realized in terms of the gradient of the Gaussian Free Field (GFF). Its space of local fields is just a bosonic Fock space for two chiral symmetry algebras. The corresponding lattice model is the discrete Gaussian Free Field. Our first main result is that the space of local fields of polynomials in the gradient of the discrete GFF is isomorphic to the Fock space. These local fields make sense with both Dirichlet and Neumann boundary conditions. Our second main result is that with the appropriate renormalization, correlation functions of local fields of the discrete GFF converge in the scaling limit to the correlation functions of the CFT. The renormalization needed is, conceptually correctly, according to the eigenvalue of the Virasoro generator $L_0 + \bar{L}_0$ on the local field.

The quantum group dual of the first-row subcategory for the generic Virasoro VOA

In several examples it has been observed that a module category of a vertex operator algebra (VOA) is equivalent to a category of representations of some quantum group. The present article is concerned with developing such a duality in the case of the Virasoro VOA at generic central charge; arguably the most rudimentary of all VOAs, yet structurally complicated. We do not address the category of all modules of the generic Virasoro VOA, but we consider the infinitely many modules from the first row of the Kac table. Building on an explicit quantum group method of Coulomb gas integrals, we give a new proof of the fusion rules, we prove the analyticity of compositions of intertwining operators, and we show that the conformal blocks are fully determined by the quantum group method. Crucially, we prove the associativity of the intertwining operators among the first-row modules, and find that the associativity is governed by the $6j$-symbols of the quantum group. Our results constitute a concrete duality between a VOA and a quantum group, and they will serve as the key tools to establish the equivalence of the first-row subcategory of modules of the generic Virasoro VOA and the category of (type-1) finite-dimensional representations of $\mathcal{U}_{q}(\mathfrak{sl}_{2})$.

Slit-strip Ising boundary conformal field theory 1: Discrete and continuous function spaces

This is the first in a series of articles about recovering the full algebraic structure of a boundary conformal field theory (CFT) from the scaling limit of the critical Ising model in slit-strip geometry. Here, we introduce spaces of holomorphic functions in continuum domains as well as corresponding spaces of discrete holomorphic functions in lattice domains. We find distinguished sets of functions characterized by their singular behavior in the three infinite directions in the slit-strip domains. We prove convergence results of the distinguished discrete holomorphic functions to the continuum ones. In the subsequent articles, the discrete holomorphic functions will be used for the calculation of the Ising model fusion coefficients (as well as for the diagonalization of the Ising transfer matrix), and the convergence of the functions is used to prove the convergence of the fusion coefficients. It will also be shown that the vertex operator algebra of the boundary conformal field theory can be recovered from the limit of the fusion coefficients via geometric transformations involving the distinguished continuum functions.

Slit-strip Ising boundary conformal field theory 2: Scaling limits of fusion coefficients

This is the second in a series of three articles about recovering the full algebraic structure of a boundary conformal field theory (CFT) from the scaling limit of the critical Ising model in slit-strip geometry. Here we study the fusion coefficients of the Ising model in the lattice slit-strip, with locally monochromatic boundary conditions. The fusion coefficients are certain renormalized limits of boundary correlation functions at the three extremities of the truncated lattice slit-strips, in a basis of random variables whose correlation functions have an essentially exponential dependence on the truncation heights. The key technique is to associate operator valued discrete 1-forms to certain discrete holomorphic functions. This provides a direct analogy with currents in boundary conformal field theory. For two specific applications of this technique, we use distinguished discrete holomorphic functions from the first article of the series. First, we rederive the known diagonalization of the Ising transfer matrix in a form that parallels boundary conformal field theory. Second, we characterize the Ising model fusion coefficients by a recursion written purely in terms of inner products of the distinguished discrete holomorphic functions. The convergence result for the discrete holomorphic functions proven in the first part can then be used to derive the convergence of the fusion coefficients in the scaling limit. In the third article of the series, it will be shown that up to a transformation that accounts for our chosen slit-strip geometry, the scaling limits of the fusion coefficients become the structure constants of the vertex operator algebra of a fermionic conformal field theory.

Boundary correlations in planar LERW and UST

We find explicit formulas for the probabilities of general boundary visit events for planar loop-erased random walks, as well as connectivity events for branches in the uniform spanning tree. We show that both probabilities, when suitably renormalized, converge in the scaling limit to conformally covariant functions which satisfy partial differential equations of second and third order, as predicted by conformal field theory. The scaling limit connectivity probabilities also provide formulas for the pure partition functions of multiple $\mathrm{SLE}_κ$ at $κ=2$.

Conformal Field Theory at the Lattice Level: Discrete Complex Analysis and Virasoro Structure

Critical statistical mechanics and Conformal Field Theory (CFT) are conjecturally connected since the seminal work of Beliavin, Polyakov, and Zamolodchikov [BPZ84a]. Both exhibit exactly solvable structures in two dimensions. A long-standing question [ItTh87] concerns whether there is a direct link between these structures, that is, whether the Virasoro algebra representations of CFT, the distinctive feature of CFT in two dimensions, can be found within lattice models of statistical mechanics. We give a positive answer to this question for the discrete Gaussian free field and for the Ising model, by connecting the structures of discrete complex analysis in the lattice models with the Virasoro symmetry that is expected to describe their scaling limits. This allows for a tight connection of a number of objects from the lattice model world and the field theory one. In particular, our results link the CFT local fields with lattice local fields introduced in [GHP19] and the probabilistic formulation of the lattice model with the continuum correlation functions. Our construction is a decisive step towards establishing the conjectured correspondence between the correlation functions of the CFT fields and those of the lattice local fields. In particular, together with the upcoming [CHI19], our construction will complete the picture initiated in [HoSm13, Hon12, CHI15], where a number of conjectures relating specific Ising lattice fields and CFT correlations were proven.

Conformal blocks, $q$-combinatorics, and quantum group symmetry

In this article, we find a $q$-analogue for Fomin's formulas. The original Fomin's formulas relate determinants of random walk excursion kernels to loop-erased random walk partition functions, and our formulas analogously relate conformal block functions of conformal field theories to pure partition functions of multiple SLE random curves. We also provide a construction of the conformal block functions by a method based on a quantum group, the $q$-deformation of $\mathfrak{sl}_2$. The construction both highlights the representation theoretic origin of conformal block functions and explains the appearance of $q$-combinatorial formulas.

Conformally covariant boundary correlation functions with a quantum group

Particular boundary correlation functions of conformal field theory are needed to answer some questions related to random conformally invariant curves known as Schramm-Loewner evolutions (SLE). In this article, we introduce a correspondence and establish its fundamental properties, which are used in the companion articles [JJK16, KP16] for explicitly solving two such problems. The correspondence associates Coulomb gas type integrals to vectors in a tensor product representation of a quantum group, a q-deformation of the Lie algebra sl2. We show that desired properties of the functions are guaranteed by natural representation theoretical properties of the vectors.

Pure partition functions of multiple SLEs

Multiple Schramm-Loewner Evolutions (SLE) are conformally invariant random processes of several curves, whose construction by growth processes relies on partition functions: Möbius covariant solutions to a system of second order partial differential equations. In this article, we use a quantum group technique to construct a distinguished basis of solutions, which conjecturally correspond to the extremal points of the convex set of probability measures of multiple SLEs.

SLE boundary visits

We study the probabilities with which chordal Schramm-Loewner Evolutions (SLE) visit small neighborhoods of boundary points. We find formulas for general chordal SLE boundary visiting probability amplitudes, also known as SLE boundary zig-zags or order refined SLE multi-point Green's functions on the boundary. Remarkably, an exact answer can be found to this important SLE question for an arbitrarily large number of marked points. The main technique employed is a spin chain-Coulomb gas correspondence between tensor product representations of a quantum group and functions given by Dotsenko-Fateev type integrals. We show how to express these integral formulas in terms of regularized real integrals, and we discuss their numerical evaluation. The results are universal in the sense that apart from an overall multiplicative constant the same formula gives the amplitude for many different formulations of the SLE boundary visit problem. The formula also applies to renormalized boundary visit probabilities for interfaces in critical lattice models of statistical mechanics: we compare the results with numerical simulations of percolation, loop-erased random walk, and Fortuin-Kasteleyn random cluster models at Q=2 and Q=3, and find good agreement.

Discrete holomorphicity and Ising model operator formalism

We explore the connection between the transfer matrix formalism and discrete complex analysis approach to the two dimensional Ising model. We construct a discrete analytic continuation matrix, analyze its spectrum and establish a direct connection with the critical Ising transfer matrix. We show that the lattice fermion operators of the transfer matrix formalism satisfy, as operators, discrete holomorphicity, and we show that their correlation functions are Ising parafermionic observables. We extend these correspondences also to outside the critical point. We show that critical Ising correlations can be computed with operators on discrete Cauchy data spaces, which encode the geometry and operator insertions in a manner analogous to the quantum states in the transfer matrix formalism.

Ising Interfaces and Free Boundary Conditions

We study the interfaces arising in the two-dimensional Ising model at critical temperature, without magnetic field. We show that in the presence of free boundary conditions between plus and minus spins, the scaling limit of these interfaces can be described by a variant of SLE, called dipolar SLE(3). This generalizes a celebrated result of Chelkak and Smirnov and proves a conjecture of Bauer, Bernard and Houdayer. We mention two possible applications of our result.

Hadamard's formula and couplings of SLEs with free field

The relation between level lines of Gaussian free fields (GFF) and SLE(4)-type curves was discovered by O. Schramm and S. Sheffield. A weak interpretation of this relation is the existence of a coupling of the GFF and a random curve, in which the curve behaves like a level line of the field. In the present paper we study these couplings for the free field with different boundary conditions. We provide a unified way to determine the law of the curve (i.e. to compute the driving process of the Loewner chain) given boundary conditions of the field, and to prove existence of the coupling. The proof is reduced to the verification of two simple properties of the mean and covariance of the field, which always relies on Hadamard's formula and properties of harmonic functions. Examples include combinations of Dirichlet, Neumann and Riemann-Hilbert boundary conditions. In doubly connected domains, the standard annulus SLE(4) is coupled with a compactified GFF obeying Neumann boundary conditions on the inner boundary. We also consider variants of annulus SLE coupled with free fields having other natural boundary conditions. These include boundary conditions leading to curves connecting two points on different boundary components with prescribed winding as well as those recently proposed by C. Hagendorf, M. Bauer and D. Bernard.

On Staggered Indecomposable Virasoro Modules

In this article, certain indecomposable Virasoro modules are studied. Specifically, the Virasoro mode L_0 is assumed to be non-diagonalisable, possessing Jordan blocks of rank two. Moreover, the module is further assumed to have a highest weight submodule, the "left module", and that the quotient by this submodule yields another highest weight module, the "right module". Such modules, which have been called staggered, have appeared repeatedly in the logarithmic conformal field theory literature, but their theory has not been explored in full generality. Here, such a theory is developed for the Virasoro algebra using rather elementary techniques. The focus centres on two different but related questions typically encountered in practical studies: How can one identify a given staggered module, and how can one demonstrate the existence of a proposed staggered module. The text is liberally peppered throughout with examples illustrating the general concepts. These have been carefully chosen for their physical relevance or for the novel features they exhibit.

SLE local martingales in logarithmic representations

A space of local martingales of SLE type growth processes forms a representation of Virasoro algebra, but apart from a few simplest cases not much is known about this representation. The purpose of this article is to exhibit examples of representations where L_0 is not diagonalizable - a phenomenon characteristic of logarithmic conformal field theory. Furthermore, we observe that the local martingales bear a close relation with the fusion product of the boundary changing fields. Our examples reproduce first of all many familiar logarithmic representations at certain rational values of the central charge. In particular we discuss the case of SLE(kappa=6) describing the exploration path in critical percolation, and its relation with the question of operator content of the appropriate conformal field theory of zero central charge. In this case one encounters logarithms in a probabilistically transparent way, through conditioning on a crossing event. But we also observe that some quite natural SLE variants exhibit logarithmic behavior at all values of kappa, thus at all central charges and not only at specific rational values.

Virasoro Module Structure of Local Martingales of SLE Variants

Martingales often play an important role in computations with Schramm-Loewner evolutions (SLEs). The purpose of this article is to provide a straightforward approach to the Virasoro module structure of the space of local martingales for variants of SLEs. In the case of ordinary chordal SLE, it has been shown in Bauer & Bernard: Phys.Lett.B 557 that polynomial local martingales form a Virasoro module. We will show for more general variants that the module of local martingales has a natural submodule M that has the same interpretation as the module of polynomial local martingales of chordal SLE, but it is in many cases easy to find more local martingales than that. We discuss the surprisingly rich structure of the Virasoro module M and construction of the ``SLE state'' or ``martingale generating function'' by Coulomb gas formalism. In addition, Coulomb gas or Feigin-Fuchs integrals will be shown to transparently produce candidates for multiple SLE pure geometries.
