On generalized Davis-Wielandt radius inequalities of semi-Hilbertian space operators

Let $A$ be a positive (semidefinite) operator on a complex Hilbert space $\mathcal{H}$ and let $\mathbb{A}=\left(\begin{array}{cc} A & O O & A \end{array}\right).$ We obtain upper and lower bounds for the $A$-Davis-Wielandt radius of semi-Hilbertian space operators, which generalize and improve on the existing ones. We also obtain upper bounds for the $\mathbb{A}$-Davis-Wielandt radius of $2 \times 2$ operator matrices. Finally, we determine the exact value for the $\mathbb{A}$-Davis-Wielandt radius of two operator matrices $\left(\begin{array}{cc} I & X\\ 0 & 0 \end{array}\right)$ and $\left(\begin{array}{cc} 0 & X\\ 0 & 0 \end{array}\right)$, where $X $ is a semi-Hilbertian space operator.

On the numerical range of operators on some special Banach spaces

The numerical range of a bounded linear operator on a complex Banach space need not be convex unlike that on a Hilbert space. The aim of this paper is to study operators $T$ on $ \ell^2_p $ for which the numerical range is convex. We also obtain a nice relation between $V(T)$ and $ V(T^t)$ considering $ T \in \mathbb{L} (\ell_p^2) $ and $ T^t \in \mathbb{L} (\ell_q^2) ,$ where $T^t$ denotes the transpose of $T$ and $p$ and $q$ are conjugate real numbers i.e., $ 1 <p,q< \infty $ and $ \frac{1}{p}+\frac{1}{q}=1.$

Refinements of A-numerical radius inequalities and their applications

We present sharp lower bounds for the A-numerical radius of semi-Hilbertian space operators. We also present an upper bound. Further we compute new upper bounds for the $B$-numerical radius of $2 \times 2$ operator matrices where $B = \textit{diag}(A,A)$, $A$ being a positive operator. As an application of the A-numerical radius inequalities, we obtain a bound for the zeros of a polynomial which is quite a bit improvement of some famous existing bounds for the zeros of polynomials.

Some improvements of numerical radius inequalities of operators and operator matrices

We obtain upper bounds for the numerical radius of a product of Hilbert space operators which improve on the existing upper bounds. We generalize the numerical radius inequalities of $n\times n$ operator matrices by using non-negative continuous functions on $[0,\infty)$. We also obtain some upper and lower bounds for the $B$-numerical radius of operator matrices, where $B$ is the diagonal operator matrix whose each diagonal entry is a positive operator $A.$ We show that these bounds generalize and improve on the existing bounds.

On inequalities for A-numerical radius of operators

Let $A$ be a positive operator on a complex Hilbert space $\mathcal{H}.$ We present inequalities concerning upper and lower bounds for $A$-numerical radius of operators, which improve on and generalize the existing ones, studied recently in [A. Zamani, A-Numerical radius inequalities for semi-Hilbertian space operators, Linear Algebra Appl. 578 (2019) 159-183]. We also obtain some inequalities for $B$-numerical radius of $2\times 2$ operator matrices where $B$ is the $2\times 2$ diagonal operator matrix whose diagonal entries are $A$. Further we obtain upper bounds for $A$-numerical radius for product of operators which improve on the existing bounds.

Sharp inequalities for the numerical radius of Hilbert space operators and operator matrices

We present new upper and lower bounds for the numerical radius of a bounded linear operator defined on a complex Hilbert space, which improve on the existing bounds. Among many other inequalities proved in this article, we show that for a non-zero bounded linear operator $T$ on a Hilbert space $H,$ $w(T)\geq \frac{\|T\|}{2}+\frac{m(T^2)}{2\|T\|}, $ where $w(T)$ is the numerical radius of $T$ and $m(T^2)$ is the Crawford number of $T^2$. This substantially improves on the existing inequality $w(T)\geq \frac{\|T\|}{2} .$ We also obtain some upper and lower bounds for the numerical radius of operator matrices and illustrate with numerical examples that these bounds are better than the existing bounds.

Estimations of zeros of a polynomial using numerical radius inequalities

We present new bounds for the numerical radius of bounded linear operators and $2\times 2$ operator matrices. We apply upper bounds for the numerical radius to the Frobenius companion matrix of a complex monic polynomial to obtain new estimations for zeros of that polynomial. We also show with numerical examples that our new estimations improve on the existing estimations.

On numerical radius and Crawford number attainment sets of a bounded linear operator

We completely characterize the Crawford number attainment set and the numerical radius attainment set of a bounded linear operator on a Hilbert space. We study the intersection properties of the corresponding attainment sets of numerical radius, Crawford number, norm, minimum norm of a bounded linear operator defined on a normed space. Our study illustrates the similarities and the differences of the extremal properties of a bounded linear operator on a Hilbert space and a general normed space.

$A$-Numerical radius orthogonality and parallelism of semi-Hilbertian space operators and their applications

In this paper, we aim to introduce and characterize the concept of numerical radius orthogonality of operators on a complex Hilbert space $\mathcal{H}$ which are bounded with respect to the semi-norm induced by a positive operator $A$ on $\mathcal{H}$. Moreover, a characterization of the $A$-numerical radius parallelism for $A$-rank one operators is proved. As applications of the obtained results, we obtain some $\mathbb{A}$-numerical radius inequalities of operator matrices where $\mathbb{A}$ is the operator diagonal matrix with diagonal entries are positive operator $A$. Some other related results are also investigated.

Birkhoff-James orthogonality to a subspace of operators defined between Banach spaces

This paper deals with study of Birkhoff-James orthogonality of a linear operator to a subspace of operators defined between arbitrary Banach spaces. In case the domain space is reflexive and the subspace is finite dimensional we obtain a complete characterization. For arbitrary Banach spaces, we obtain the same under some additional conditions. For arbitrary Hilbert space $ \mathbb{H},$ we also study orthogonality to subspace of the space of linear operators $L(\mathbb{H}), $ both with respect to operator norm as well as numerical radius norm.

Orthogonality in a vector space with a topology And a generalization of Bhatia-Semrl Theorem

We introduce the notion of orthogonality in a vector space with a topology on it. To serve our purpose, we define orthogonality space for a given vector space X, using the topology on it. We show that for a suitable choice of orthogonality space, Birkhoff-James orthogonality in a Banach space is a particular case of the orthogonality introduced by us. We characterize the right additivity of orthogonality in our setting and obtain a necessary and sufficient condition for a Banach space to be smooth as a corollary to our characterization. Finally, using our notion of orthogonality, we obtain a topological generalization of the Bhatia-Semrl Theorem.

Characterization of $k-$smooth operators between Banach spaces

We study $k-$smoothness of bounded linear operators defined between arbitrary Banach spaces. As an application, we characterize $k-$smooth operators defined from $\ell_1^n$ to an arbitrary Banach space. We also completely characterize $k-$smooth operators defined between arbitrary two-dimensional Banach spaces.

Geometry-controlled Failure Mechanisms of Amorphous Solids on the Nanoscale

Amorphous solids, confined on the nano-scale, exhibit a wealth of novel phenomena yet to be explored. In particular, the response of such solids to a mechanical load is not well understood and, as has been demonstrated experimentally, it differs strongly from bulk samples made of the same materials. Failure patterns and mechanisms are strongly affected by the geometry of the confinement and the interplay between interfacial effects in the sample and the time scale, imposed by an external mechanical field. Here, we present the mechanism of cavity formation in a confined model glass, subjected to expansion with a constant strain rate. This system is studied for varying geometric aspect ratio and sample size. Our results show that for a given temperature and straining condition, the sample shows cavitation when the aspect ratio reaches a critical value and below this aspect ratio the sample breaks by forming a neck. The critical aspect ratio is associated with a critical curvature of the neck that depends on strain rate and temperature. If this critical curvature is exceeded, the free energy of the system is minimized by the formation of a cavity. Our study reveals a novel mechanism of cavity formation on the nanoscale. This is probably a generic mechanism for material's failure in small confined systems under mechanical load.

Orthogonality and Numerical radius inequalities of operator matrices

We completely characterize Birkhoff-James orthogonality with respect to numerical radius norm in the space of bounded linear operators on a complex Hilbert space. As applications of the results obtained, we estimate lower bounds of numerical radius for $n\times n$ operator matrices, which improve on and generalize existing lower bounds. We also obtain a better lower bound of numerical radius for an upper triangular operator matrix.

Numerical radius inequalities and its applications in estimation of zeros of polynomials

We present some upper and lower bounds for the numerical radius of a bounded linear operator defined on complex Hilbert space, which improves on the existing upper and lower bounds. We also present an upper bound for the spectral radius of sum of product of $n$ pairs of operators. As an application of the results obtained, we provide a better estimation for the zeros of a given polynomial.

Extreme contractions on finite-dimensional polygonal Banach spaces

We explore extreme contractions between finite-dimensional polygonal Banach spaces, from the point of view of attainment of norm of a linear operator. We prove that if $ X $ is an $ n- $dimensional polygonal Banach space and $ Y $ is any Banach space and $ T \in L(X,Y) $ is an extreme contraction, then $ T $ attains norm at $ n $ linearly independent extreme points of $ B_{X}. $ Moreover, if $ T $ attains norm at $ n $ linearly independent extreme points $ x_1, x_2, \ldots, x_n $ of $ B_X $ and does not attain norm at any other extreme point of $ B_X, $ then each $ Tx_i $ is an extreme point of $ B_Y.$ We completely characterize extreme contractions between a finite-dimensional polygonal Banach space and a strictly convex Banach space. We introduce L-P property for a pair of Banach spaces and show that it has natural connections with our present study. We also prove that for any strictly convex Banach space $ X $ and any finite-dimensional polygonal Banach space $ Y, $ the pair $ (X,Y) $ does not have L-P property. Finally, we obtain a characterization of Hilbert spaces among strictly convex Banach spaces in terms of L-P property.
