An exposition on finite dimensionality of Chow groups

In this exposition we understand when the natural map from the Chow variety parametrizing codimension $p$ cycles on a smooth projective variety $X$ to the Chow group $\CH^p(X)$ is surjective. We derive some consequences when the map is surjective.

Representability of Chow groups of codimension three cycles

In this note we are going to prove that if we have a fibration of smooth projective varieties $X\to S$ over a surface $S$ such that $X$ is of dimension four and that the geometric generic fiber has finite dimensional motive and the first étale cohomology of the geometric generic fiber with respect to $\mathbb {Q}_l$ coefficients is zero and the second étale cohomology is spanned by divisors, then $A^3(X)$ (codimension three algebraically trivial cycles modulo rational equivalence) is dominated by finitely many copies of $A_0(S)$. Meaning that there exists finitely many correspondences $Γ_i$ on $S\times X$, such that $\sum_i Γ_i$ is surjective from $\oplus A^2(S)$ to $A^3(X)$.

On a question of Colliot-Thélène on Chow group mod $n$

In this note we define the notion of Tate-Shafarevich group and Selmer group of the Chow group of an abelian variety defined over a number field. In this context we give positive answer to the question of Colliot-Thélène that the Chow group of zero cycles modulo $n$ is finite over any number field.

Divisibility of Selmer groups and class groups

In this paper, we study two topics. One is the divisibility problem of class groups of quadratic number fields and its connections to algebraic geometry. The other is the construction of Selmer group and Tate-Shafarevich group for an abelian variety defined over a number field.

Geometry of quintics in $\mathbb P^3$ and the Craighero-Gattazzo surface of general type

In this paper we study the question whether the tri-canonical system on the Craighero-Gattazzo surface is base point free and at which points does it separate tangent vectors. Also we study the non-rationality of the normalization of the quotient of a general curve (under a given involution) in the product linear system of cubics and quadrics on a singular quintic in $\PR^3$ with four elliptic singularities.

A note on Lefschetz fibrations on algebraic surfaces

Let $S$ be a smooth projective complex algebraic surface and $f\, :\, S\, \longrightarrow\, {\mathbb C}{\mathbb P}^2$ a finite map. Consider a pencil of hyperplane sections on ${\mathbb C}{\mathbb P}^2$ and pull it back to $S$. We address the question whether such a pencil is a Lefschetz pencil on $S$.

The variation of the Gysin kernel in a family

Consider a smooth projective surface $S$. Consider a fibration $S\to C$ where $C$ is a quasi-projective curve such the fibers are smooth projective curves. The aim of this text is to show that the kernels of the push-forward homomorphism $\{j_{t*}\}_{t\in C}$ from the Jacobian $J(C_t)$ to $A_0(S)$ forms a family in the sense that it is a countable union of translates of an abelian scheme over $C$ sitting inside the Jacobian scheme $\mathscr{J}\to C$, such that the fiber of this countable union at $t$ is the kernel of $j_{t*}$.

Theta divisors of abelian varieties and push-forward homomorphism at the level of Chow groups

In this text we prove that if an abelian variety $A$ admits of an embedding into the Jacobian of a smooth projective curve $C$, and if we consider $\Th_A$ to be the divisor $\Th_C\cap A$, where $\Th_C$ denotes the theta divisor of $J(C)$, then the embedding of $\Th_A$ into $A$ induces an injective push-forward homomorphism at the level of Chow groups. We show that this is the case for every principally polarized abelian varieties.

Blow ups and base changes of symmetric powers and Chow groups

Let $\Sym^m X$ denote the $m$-th symmetric power of a smooth projective curve $X$. Let $\wt{\Sym^m X}$ be the blow up of $\Sym^m X$ along some non-singular subvariety. In this note we are going to discuss when the pushforward homomorphism induced by the natural morphism from $\wt{\Sym^m X}$ to $\Sym^n X$ is injective at the level of Chow groups for $m\leq n$. Also we are going to prove that base changes of embeddings of one symmetric power into another, with respect to closed embeddings induces an injection at the level of Chow groups.

Algebraic cycles on the Fano variety of lines of a cubic fourfold

In this text we prove that if a smooth cubic in $\PR^5$ has its Fano variety of lines birational to the Hilbert scheme of two points on a K3 surface, then there exists a smooth projective curve or a smooth projective surface embedded in the Fano variety, such that the kernel of the push-forward (at the level of zero cycles ) induced by the closed embedding is torsion.

Étale monodromy and rational equivalence for $1$-cycles on cubic hypersurfaces in $\mathbb P^5$

Let $k$ be an uncountable algebraically closed field of characteristic $0$, and let $X$ be a smooth projective connected variety of dimension $2p$, appropriately embedded into $\mathbb P^m$ over $k$. Let $Y$ be a hyperplane section of $X$, and let $A^p(Y)$ and $A^{p+1}(X)$ be the groups of algebraically trivial algebraic cycles of codimension $p$ and $p+1$ modulo rational equivalence on $Y$ and $X$ respectively. Assume that, whenever $Y$ is smooth, the group $A^p(Y)$ is regularly parametrized by an abelian variety $A$ and coincides with the subgroup of degree $0$ classes in the Chow group $CH^p(Y)$. In the paper we prove that the kernel of the push-forward homomorphism from $A^p(Y)$ to $A^{p+1}(X)$ is the union of a countable collection of shifts of a certain abelian subvariety $A_0$ inside $A$. For a very general section $Y$ either $A_0=0$ or $A_0$ coincides with an abelian subvariety $A_1$ in $A$ whose tangent space is the group of vanishing cycles $H^{2p-1}(Y)_{\rm van}$. Then we apply these general results to sections of a smooth cubic fourfold in $\mathbb P^5$.

Bloch's conjecture on surfaces of general type with an involution

In this short note we prove that the Bloch's conjecture holds for a surface of general type of numerical Godeaux type or some class of numerical Campedelli type, with geometric genus zero equipped with an involution, when the quotient of the surface by the involution is a rational surface.

Mumford-Roitman argument on families

The aim of this note is to show that the properties like motivic decomposability, Chow theoretic decomposition of the diagonal etc. happens for the special member of a family if it happens for a general member of the family.
