Short time dynamics of water coalescence on a flat water pool

Coalescence is an important hydrodynamic event that frequently takes place in nature as well as in industry. Here we provide an experimental study on short time dynamics of water coalescence, particularly when a water droplet comes in contact with a flat water surface, by utilizing high-resolution high-penetration ultrafast X-ray microscopy. Our results demonstrate a possibility that an extreme curvature difference between a drop and a flat surface can significantly modify the hydrodynamics of water coalescence, which is unexpected in the existing theory. We suggest a plausible explanation for why coalescence can be modified by an extreme curvature difference.

The structural origin of the hard-sphere glass transition in granular packing

Glass transition is accompanied by a rapid growth of the structural relaxation time and a concomitant decrease of configurational entropy. It remains unclear whether the transition has a thermodynamic origin, and whether the dynamic arrest is associated with the growth of a certain static order. Using granular packing as a model hard-sphere glass, we show the glass transition as a thermodynamic phase transition with a "hidden" polytetrahedral order. This polytetrahedral order is spatially correlated with the slow dynamics. It is geometrically frustrated and has a peculiar fractal dimension. Additionally, as the packing fraction increases, its growth follows an entropy-driven nucleation process, similar to that of the random first-order transition theory. Our study essentially identifies a long-sought-after structural glass order in hard-sphere glasses.

Dynamic synchrotron X-ray imaging study of effective temperature in a vibrated granular medium

We present a dynamic synchrotron X-ray imaging study of the effective temperature $T_{eff}$ in a vibrated granular medium. By tracking the directed motion and the fluctuation dynamics of the tracers inside, we obtained $T_{eff}$ of the system using Einstein relation. We found that as the system unjams with increasing vibration intensities $Γ$, the structural relaxation time $τ$ increases substantially which can be fitted by an Arrhenius law using $T_{eff}$. And the characteristic energy scale of structural relaxation yielded by the Arrhenius fitting is $E = 0.21 \pm 0.02$ $pd^3$, where $p$ is the pressure and $d$ is the background particle diameter, which is consistent with those from hard sphere simulations in which the structural relaxation happens via the opening up of free volume against pressure.

Vibration and Nonlinear Resonance in the Break-up of an Underwater Bubble

We use high-speed X-ray phase-contrast imaging, weakly nonlinear analysis and boundary integral simulations to characterize the final stage of underwater bubble break-up. The X-ray imaging study shows that an initial azimuthal perturbation to the shape of the bubble neck gives rise to oscillations that increasingly distort the cross-section shape. These oscillations terminate in a pinch-off where the bubble surface develops concave regions that contact similar to what occurs when two liquid drops coalesce. We also present a weakly nonlinear analysis that shows that this coalescence-like mode of pinch-off occurs when the initial shape oscillation interferes constructively with the higher harmonics it generates and thus reinforce each other's effects in bringing about bubble break-up. Finally we present numerical results that confirm the weakly nonlinear analysis scenario as well as provide insight into observed shape reversals. They demonstrate that when the oscillations interfere destructively, a qualitatively different mode of pinch-off results where the cross-section profile of the bubble neck develops sharply-curved regions.
