Searching for Axion-like particle Dark Matter with Time-domain Polarization: Constraints from a protoplanetary disk

Axion-like particles (ALPs) can induce a birefringence effect that rotates the polarization angle of light, offering a probe of ultralight dark matter. We analyze archival near-infrared polarimetric data of the protoplanetary disk (PPD) around HD 163296. Whereas previous studies considered only single-epoch snapshots, we perform a consistent multi-epoch time-series analysis, extracting the polarization angle and its uncertainty from the polarized images. The resulting six-epoch time series is consistent with a constant polarization angle within the measurement uncertainties, while being sensitive to timescales of $\sim 170-400$ days. The typical polarization angle uncertainties are $1.6$--$6.4$ degrees, partly driven by multiple scattering in the optically thick disk, which broadens the intrinsic polarization angle distribution and introduces additional dispersion in the representative polarization angle. Based on these data, we derive the first upper limits on the ALP-photon coupling from PPD polarization variability, $g_{aγ} \lesssim 7.5 \times 10^{-12} (m_a / 10^{-22}\,{\rm eV})\,{\rm GeV}^{-1}$. Furthermore, we forecast that achieving a polarization angle uncertainty of $σ\sim 0.1$ degrees would enable world-leading sensitivity to ALP-induced birefringence.

Unlocking the Hidden Potential of ALMA Calibrators: A Pilot Blind Search for Galactic Molecular Gas in ALMA Band 1

We present a pilot blind absorption line search using calibrator observations with the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA) Band 1 receiver (35 GHz to 50 GHz). Radio-loud quasars, commonly used for calibration, provide stable and bright background sources that are ideal for absorption line studies of diffuse interstellar gas. To enable a systematic analysis beyond previous targeted studies, we developed an automated pipeline, from archival data download to statistical identification of absorption line candidates, and applied it to archival ALMA Band 1 observations corresponding to 16 distinct calibrator sources. We statistically identify significant absorption line candidates along the analyzed sightlines. This pilot study demonstrates the feasibility of blind absorption line searches with ALMA Band 1 calibrator data and provides a scalable framework for future large-scale archival surveys.

Development of TIFUUN: Terahertz Integral Field Units with Universal Nanotechnology

TIFUUN (THz Integral Field Units with Universal Nanotechnology) is an ultra-wideband mm-submm wave imaging spectrometer that capitalizes on the highly scalable integrated superconducting spectrometer technology. TIFUUN has two slots for integral field units (IFUs), which can jointly be optimized as open-hardware for each astronomical observation in terms of spatial and spectral coverage. These IFUs can have observation frequencies in the range of 90--360 GHz, with spectral resolution up to $R\equiv F/ΔF \le 1,000$, with up to $\sim$18,000 kinetic inductance detectors (shared by the two IFUs with a flexible ratio). The ultra-wide 4:1 (2 octave) bandwidth optics fits in a remarkably compact volume, by means of thin silicon lenses and a high chief ray angle design. The first pair of IFUs are being developed for the SUBLIME (Study of the Universe By Line Intensity Mapping Experiments) experiment that aims to map CII emission at redshift $\sim$6 to trace the cosmic large-scale structure and the buildup of galaxies during reionization, using TIFUUN on the ASTE 10-m telescope. The scalability, flexibility and compactness makes TIFUUN a highly compatible and portable system suited also for upcoming telescope facilities in the vicinity, such as FYST and AtLAST/LST.

ALMA Lensing Cluster Survey: Molecular Gas Properties of Line-Emitting Galaxies from a Blind Survey

We present results of a blind search for line-emitting galaxies using ALMA Lensing Cluster Survey data. We detected seven line emitters, one of which is [C\,{\sc ii}] at $z = 6.071$, four are CO at $z = 0.8$--1.1, and the remaining two are possibly CO or [C\,{\sc i}] within photometric redshift ranges. Three of the four CO emitters are multiple images of the same galaxy. Compared to previous line-emitter searches in ALMA deep fields, our sample probes molecular gas masses $\sim$1 dex below the lower bound, thanks to gravitational lensing (typically $μ\sim 4$, up to $\sim$30 in extreme cases). Most emitters are located in a region similar to normal star-forming galaxies in the star formation rate (SFR) versus molecular gas mass plane. To reduce dependence on SFR and stellar mass, we analyzed the molecular gas fraction and depletion timescale as a function of distance from the star-formation main sequence. We found that most emitters broadly follow the scaling relations from previous studies, consistent within the intrinsic scatter. In addition, we serendipitously detected the CH $N = 1$, $J = 3/2 \rightarrow 1/2$ $Λ$-doublet transition from one CO emitter at $z = 1.142$, representing the first detection of CH from an individual galaxy at cosmological distances through a blind survey. The CH/CO column density ratio of $\sim$$10^{-4}$ is comparable to that of local AGN-host galaxies, suggesting that CH traces molecular gas associated with AGN activity, possibly irradiated by X-rays.

Physical and Chemical Properties of Galactic Molecular Gas toward QSO J1851+0035

ALMA data toward QSO J1851+0035 ($l$=$33.498^{\circ}$, $b$=$+0.194^{\circ}$) were used to study absorption lines by Galactic molecular gas. We detected 17 species (CO, $^{13}$CO, C$^{18}$O, HCO$^+$, H$^{13}$CO$^+$, HCO, H$_2$CO, C$_2$H, $c$-C$_3$H, $c$-C$_3$H$_2$, CN, HCN, HNC, CS, SO, SiO, and C) and set upper limits to 18 species as reference values for chemical models. About 20 independent velocity components at 4.7-10.9 kpc from the Galactic Center were identified. Their column density and excitation temperature estimated from the absorption study, as well as the CO intensity distributions obtained from the FUGIN survey, indicate that the components with $τ$ $\lesssim$ 1 correspond to diffuse clouds or cloud outer edges. Simultaneous multiple-Gaussian fitting of CO $J$=1-0 and $J$=2-1 absorption lines shows that these are composed of narrow- and broad-line components. The kinetic temperature empirically expected from the high HCN/HNC isomer ratio ($\gtrsim$4) reaches $\gtrsim$40 K and the corresponding thermal width accounts for the line widths of the narrow-line components. CN-bearing molecules and hydrocarbons have tight and linear correlations within the groups. The CO/HCO$^+$ abundance ratio showed a dispersion as large as 3 orders of magnitude with a smaller ratio in a smaller $N$(HCO$^+$) (or lower $A_{\rm V}$) range. Some of the velocity components are detected in single-dish CO emission and ALMA HCO$^+$ absorption but without corresponding ALMA CO absorption. This may be explained by the mixture of clumpy CO emitters not resolved with the $\sim$1 pc single-dish beam surrounded by extended components with a very low CO/HCO$^+$ abundance ratio (i.e., CO-poor gas).

EMPRESS. XI. SDSS and JWST Search for Local and z~4-5 Extremely Metal-Poor Galaxies (EMPGs): Clustering and Chemical Properties of Local EMPGs

We search for local extremely metal-poor galaxies (EMPGs), selecting photometric candidates by broadband color excess and machine-learning techniques with the SDSS photometric data. After removing stellar contaminants by shallow spectroscopy with Seimei and Nayuta telescopes, we confirm that three candidates are EMPGs with 0.05--0.1 $Z_\odot$ by deep Magellan/MagE spectroscopy for faint {\sc[Oiii]}$λ$4363 lines. Using a statistical sample consisting of 105 spectroscopically-confirmed EMPGs taken from our study and the literature, we calculate cross-correlation function (CCF) of the EMPGs and all SDSS galaxies to quantify environments of EMPGs. Comparing another CCF of all SDSS galaxies and comparison SDSS galaxies in the same stellar mass range ($10^{7.0}-10^{8.4} M_\odot$), we find no significant ($>1σ$) difference between these two CCFs. We also compare mass-metallicity relations (MZRs) of the EMPGs and those of galaxies at $z\sim$ 0--4 with a steady chemical evolution model and find that the EMPG MZR is comparable with the model prediction on average. These clustering and chemical properties of EMPGs are explained by a scenario of stochastic metal-poor gas accretion on metal-rich galaxies showing metal-poor star formation. Extending the broadband color-excess technique to a high-$z$ EMPG search, we select 17 candidates of $z\sim$ 4--5 EMPGs with the deep ($\simeq30$ mag) near-infrared JWST/NIRCam images obtained by ERO and ERS programs. We find galaxy candidates with negligible {\sc[Oiii]}$λλ$4959,5007 emission weaker than the local EMPGs and known high-$z$ galaxies, suggesting that some of these candidates may fall in 0--0.01 $Z_\odot$, which potentially break the lowest metallicity limit known to date.
