Step-GUI Technical Report

Recent advances in multimodal large language models unlock unprecedented opportunities for GUI automation. However, a fundamental challenge remains: how to efficiently acquire high-quality training data while maintaining annotation reliability? We introduce a self-evolving training pipeline powered by the Calibrated Step Reward System, which converts model-generated trajectories into reliable training signals through trajectory-level calibration, achieving >90% annotation accuracy with 10-100x lower cost. Leveraging this pipeline, we introduce Step-GUI, a family of models (4B/8B) that achieves state-of-the-art GUI performance (8B: 80.2% AndroidWorld, 48.5% OSWorld, 62.6% ScreenShot-Pro) while maintaining robust general capabilities. As GUI agent capabilities improve, practical deployment demands standardized interfaces across heterogeneous devices while protecting user privacy. To this end, we propose GUI-MCP, the first Model Context Protocol for GUI automation with hierarchical architecture that combines low-level atomic operations and high-level task delegation to local specialist models, enabling high-privacy execution where sensitive data stays on-device. Finally, to assess whether agents can handle authentic everyday usage, we introduce AndroidDaily, a benchmark grounded in real-world mobile usage patterns with 3146 static actions and 235 end-to-end tasks across high-frequency daily scenarios (8B: static 89.91%, end-to-end 52.50%). Our work advances the development of practical GUI agents and demonstrates strong potential for real-world deployment in everyday digital interactions.

MMRPT: MultiModal Reinforcement Pre-Training via Masked Vision-Dependent Reasoning

Multimodal pre-training remains constrained by the descriptive bias of image-caption pairs, leading models to favor surface linguistic cues over grounded visual understanding. We introduce MMRPT, a masked multimodal reinforcement pre-training framework that strengthens visual reasoning in MLLMs. We are the first to incorporate reinforcement learning directly into the pre-training of large vision-language models, enabling learning signals that reward visual grounding rather than caption imitation. MMRPT constructs masked multimodal data by estimating sentence-level visual dependency via attention over visual tokens and masking highly vision-dependent segments; the model reconstructs these spans through vision-grounded reasoning guided by a semantic-visual reward. Experiments show consistent zero-shot gains across diverse benchmarks and substantially improved robustness under supervised fine-tuning, demonstrating that reinforcement-driven masked reasoning provides a more reliable and generalizable pre-training objective for multimodal models.

ASGO: Adaptive Structured Gradient Optimization

Training deep neural networks is a structured optimization problem, because the parameters are naturally represented by matrices and tensors rather than by vectors. Under this structural representation, it has been widely observed that gradients are low-rank and Hessians are approximately block diagonal. These structured properties are crucial for designing efficient optimization algorithms, but are not utilized by many current popular optimizers like Adam. In this paper, we present a novel optimization algorithm ASGO that capitalizes on these properties by employing a preconditioner that is adaptively updated using structured gradients. By a fine-grained theoretical analysis, ASGO is proven to achieve superior convergence rates compared to existing structured gradient methods. Based on this convergence theory, we further demonstrate that ASGO can benefit from low-rank gradients and block diagonal Hessians. We also discuss practical modifications of ASGO and empirically verify ASGO's effectiveness on language model tasks. Code is available at https://github.com/infinity-stars/ASGO.

AutoBalance: An Automatic Balancing Framework for Training Physics-Informed Neural Networks

Physics-Informed Neural Networks (PINNs) provide a powerful and general framework for solving Partial Differential Equations (PDEs) by embedding physical laws into loss functions. However, training PINNs is notoriously difficult due to the need to balance multiple loss terms, such as PDE residuals and boundary conditions, which often have conflicting objectives and vastly different curvatures. Existing methods address this issue by manipulating gradients before optimization (a "pre-combine" strategy). We argue that this approach is fundamentally limited, as forcing a single optimizer to process gradients from spectrally heterogeneous loss landscapes disrupts its internal preconditioning. In this work, we introduce AutoBalance, a novel "post-combine" training paradigm. AutoBalance assigns an independent adaptive optimizer to each loss component and aggregates the resulting preconditioned updates afterwards. Extensive experiments on challenging PDE benchmarks show that AutoBalance consistently outperforms existing frameworks, achieving significant reductions in solution error, as measured by both the MSE and $L^{\infty}$ norms. Moreover, AutoBalance is orthogonal to and complementary with other popular PINN methodologies, amplifying their effectiveness on demanding benchmarks.

NextStep-1: Toward Autoregressive Image Generation with Continuous Tokens at Scale

Prevailing autoregressive (AR) models for text-to-image generation either rely on heavy, computationally-intensive diffusion models to process continuous image tokens, or employ vector quantization (VQ) to obtain discrete tokens with quantization loss. In this paper, we push the autoregressive paradigm forward with NextStep-1, a 14B autoregressive model paired with a 157M flow matching head, training on discrete text tokens and continuous image tokens with next-token prediction objectives. NextStep-1 achieves state-of-the-art performance for autoregressive models in text-to-image generation tasks, exhibiting strong capabilities in high-fidelity image synthesis. Furthermore, our method shows strong performance in image editing, highlighting the power and versatility of our unified approach. To facilitate open research, we will release our code and models to the community.

Step-3 is Large yet Affordable: Model-system Co-design for Cost-effective Decoding

Large language models (LLMs) face low hardware efficiency during decoding, especially for long-context reasoning tasks. This paper introduces Step-3, a 321B-parameter VLM with hardware-aware model-system co-design optimized for minimizing decoding costs. Step-3 innovates in two key dimensions: (1) A novel Multi-Matrix Factorization Attention (MFA) mechanism that significantly reduces both KV cache size and computation while maintaining high attention expressiveness, and (2) Attention-FFN Disaggregation (AFD), a distributed inference system that decouples attention and Feed-Forward Network (FFN) layers into specialized subsystems. This co-design achieves unprecedented cost efficiency: Step-3 significantly reduces theoretical decoding costs compared with models like DeepSeek-V3 and Qwen3 MoE 235B, with the gains widening at longer context. Step-3 achieves low cost while activating 38B parameters per token (more than DeepSeek-V3 and Qwen3 MoE 235B), demonstrating that hardware-aligned attention arithmetic intensity, MoE sparsity, and AFD are critical to cost-effectiveness. We perform a head-to-head comparison with DeepSeek-V3 in its favorable scenarios. Our implementation on Hopper GPUs achieves a decoding throughput of up to 4,039 tokens per second per GPU under 50ms TPOT SLA (4K context, FP8, no MTP). It is higher than DeepSeek-V3's 2,324 in the same setup and sets a new Pareto frontier for LLM decoding.

StepSearch: Igniting LLMs Search Ability via Step-Wise Proximal Policy Optimization

Efficient multi-hop reasoning requires Large Language Models (LLMs) based agents to acquire high-value external knowledge iteratively. Previous work has explored reinforcement learning (RL) to train LLMs to perform search-based document retrieval, achieving notable improvements in QA performance, but underperform on complex, multi-hop QA resulting from the sparse rewards from global signal only. To address this gap in existing research, we introduce StepSearch, a framework for search LLMs that trained with step-wise proximal policy optimization method. It consists of richer and more detailed intermediate search rewards and token-level process supervision based on information gain and redundancy penalties to better guide each search step. We constructed a fine-grained question-answering dataset containing sub-question-level search trajectories based on open source datasets through a set of data pipeline method. On standard multi-hop QA benchmarks, it significantly outperforms global-reward baselines, achieving 11.2% and 4.2% absolute improvements for 3B and 7B models over various search with RL baselines using only 19k training data, demonstrating the effectiveness of fine-grained, stepwise supervision in optimizing deep search LLMs. Our code will be released on https://github.com/Zillwang/StepSearch.

Investigation of magnon behavior in YIG film under microwave excitation using Brillouin light scattering

We utilize conventional wave-vector-resolved Brillouin light scattering technology to investigate the spin wave response in YIG thin films under high-power microwave excitation. By varying the microwave frequency, external bias magnetic field, and in-plane wave vector, in addition to observing the dipole-exchange spin waves excited by parallel parametric pumping, we further observe broadband spin wave excitation within the dipole-exchange spin wave spectrum. This broadband excitation results from the combined effects of parallel and perpendicular parametric pumping, induced by irregularities in the excitation geometry, as well as magnon-magnon scattering arising from the absence of certain spin wave modes. Our findings offer new insights into the mechanisms of energy dissipation and relaxation processes caused by spin wave excitation in magnetic devices operating at high power.

Geometry-Constrained Monocular Scale Estimation Using Semantic Segmentation for Dynamic Scenes

Monocular visual localization plays a pivotal role in advanced driver assistance systems and autonomous driving by estimating a vehicle's ego-motion from a single pinhole camera. Nevertheless, conventional monocular visual odometry encoun-ters challenges in scale estimation due to the absence of depth information during projection. Previous methodologies, whether rooted in physical constraints or deep learning paradigms, con-tend with issues related to computational complexity and the management of dynamic objects. This study extends our prior research, presenting innovative strategies for ego-motion estima-tion and the selection of ground points. Striving for a nuanced equilibrium between computational efficiency and precision, we propose a hybrid method that leverages the SegNeXt model for real-time applications, encompassing both ego-motion estimation and ground point selection. Our methodology incorporates dy-namic object masks to eliminate unstable features and employs ground plane masks for meticulous triangulation. Furthermore, we exploit Geometry-constraint to delineate road regions for scale recovery. The integration of this approach with the mo-nocular version of ORB-SLAM3 culminates in the accurate esti-mation of a road model, a pivotal component in our scale recov-ery process. Rigorous experiments, conducted on the KITTI da-taset, systematically compare our method with existing monocu-lar visual odometry algorithms and contemporary scale recovery methodologies. The results undeniably confirm the superior ef-fectiveness of our approach, surpassing state-of-the-art visual odometry algorithms. Continuously controllable dissipative and coherent couplings by the interaction between anti-resonance and multiple magnons

Weexperimentally realize the continuously controllable dissipative coupling and coherent coupling induced by different magnon modes and the same anti-resonance. It has been observed that the weaker the microwave magnetic field distribution of the magnon mode in magnetic materials, the more likely dissipative coupling is to occur. Conversely, stronger magnetic field distributions favor coherent coupling. Based on this principle, we have designed and implemented a system that alternates between dissipative and coherent coupling regimes. It allows microwave signals to be selectively transmitted over a large applied magnetic field range at the frequency of anti-resonance. Our experimental achievements may promote the construction of new magnonics devices like magnetic-tuning switch.

FIS-GAN: GAN with Flow-based Importance Sampling

Generative Adversarial Networks (GAN) training process, in most cases, apply Uniform or Gaussian sampling methods in the latent space, which probably spends most of the computation on examples that can be properly handled and easy to generate. Theoretically, importance sampling speeds up stochastic optimization in supervised learning by prioritizing training examples. In this paper, we explore the possibility of adapting importance sampling into adversarial learning. We use importance sampling to replace Uniform and Gaussian sampling methods in the latent space and employ normalizing flow to approximate latent space posterior distribution by density estimation. Empirically, results on MNIST and Fashion-MNIST demonstrate that our method significantly accelerates GAN's optimization while retaining visual fidelity in generated samples.

Traffic Network Partitioning for Hierarchical Macroscopic Fundamental Diagram Applications Based on Fusion of GPS Probe and Loop Detector Data

Most network partitioning methods for Macroscopic Fundamental Diagram are mostly based on a normalized cut mechanism, which takes the traffic statistics of each link, e.g. link volume, speed or density, as input to calculate the degree of similarity between two links, and perform graph cut to divide a network into two sub-networks at each iteration when the traffic dynamics between links are dramatically different. These methods assume complete link-level traffic information over the entire network, e.g. the accurate measurement of the traffic conditions exist for every single link in the network, which makes them inapplicable when it comes to real-world setting. In this paper, we propose a method which, based on fusing Probe Vehicle Data and loop detector data, extracts the locally homogeneous subnetworks with a grid-level network approach instead of dealing with detailed link-level network. By fusing the two data sources, we take advantage of both better coverage from PVD and the full-size detection from LDD.

Genetic Algorithm Optimized Support Vector Machine in NOMA-Based Satellite Networks with Imperfect CSI

With the help of a power-domain non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA) scheme, satellite networks can simultaneously serve multiple users within limited time/spectrum resource block. However, the existence of channel estimation errors inevitably degrade the judgment on users' channel state information (CSI) accuracy, thus affecting the user pairing processing and suppressing the superiority of the NOMA scheme. Inspired by the advantages of machine learning (ML) algorithms, we propose an improved support vector machine (SVM) scheme to reduce the inappropriate user pairing risks and enhance the performance of NOMA based satellite networks with imperfect CSI. Particularly, a genetic algorithm (GA) is employed to optimize the regularization and kernel parameters of the SVM, which effectively improves the classification accuracy of the proposed scheme. Simulations are provided to demonstrate that the performance of the proposed method is better than that with random user paring strategy, especially in the scenario with a large number of users.

Automated Steel Bar Counting and Center Localization with Convolutional Neural Networks

Automated steel bar counting and center localization plays an important role in the factory automation of steel bars. Traditional methods only focus on steel bar counting and their performances are often limited by complex industrial environments. Convolutional neural network (CNN), which has great capability to deal with complex tasks in challenging environments, is applied in this work. A framework called CNN-DC is proposed to achieve automated steel bar counting and center localization simultaneously. The proposed framework CNN-DC first detects the candidate center points with a deep CNN. Then an effective clustering algorithm named as Distance Clustering(DC) is proposed to cluster the candidate center points and locate the true centers of steel bars. The proposed CNN-DC can achieve 99.26% accuracy for steel bar counting and 4.1% center offset for center localization on the established steel bar dataset, which demonstrates that the proposed CNN-DC can perform well on automated steel bar counting and center localization. Code is made publicly available at: https://github.com/BenzhangQiu/Steel-bar-Detection.
