Tree level amplitudes from soft theorems

We demonstrate that the tree level amplitudes and the explicit formulas of soft factors can be uniquely determined by soft theorems and the universality of soft factors. By imposing the soft theorems and the universality, as well as the assumption of double copy, we reconstruct single trace Yang-Millsscalar amplitudes and pure Yang-Mills amplitudes, in the expanded formulas. The explicit formulas of soft factors for the bi-adjoint scalar and gluon are also determined. The expansions of Yang-Mills-scalar and Yang-Mills amplitudes can be extended to Einstein-Yang-Mills and gravitational amplitudes, and we use the expanded single trace Einstein-Yang-Mills amplitudes to reproduce the soft factors for the graviton.

Electrical Tunable Spintronic Neuron with Trainable Activation Function

Spintronic devices have been widely studied for the hardware realization of artificial neurons. The stochastic switching of magnetic tunnel junction driven by the spin torque is commonly used to produce the sigmoid activation function. However, the shape of the activation function in previous studies is fixed during the training of neural network. This restricts the updating of weights and results in a limited performance. In this work, we exploit the physics behind the spin torque induced magnetization switching to enable the dynamic change of the activation function during the training process. Specifically, the pulse width and magnetic anisotropy can be electrically controlled to change the slope of activation function, which enables a faster or slower change of output required by the backpropagation algorithm. This is also similar to the idea of batch normalization that is widely used in the machine learning. Thus, this work demonstrates that the algorithms are no longer limited to the software implementation. They can in fact be realized by the spintronic hardware using a single device. Finally, we show that the accuracy of hand-written digit recognition can be improved from 88% to 91.3% by using these trainable spintronic neurons without introducing additional energy consumption. Our proposals can stimulate the hardware realization of spintronic neural networks.

Improving Distantly Supervised Relation Extraction by Natural Language Inference

To reduce human annotations for relation extraction (RE) tasks, distantly supervised approaches have been proposed, while struggling with low performance. In this work, we propose a novel DSRE-NLI framework, which considers both distant supervision from existing knowledge bases and indirect supervision from pretrained language models for other tasks. DSRE-NLI energizes an off-the-shelf natural language inference (NLI) engine with a semi-automatic relation verbalization (SARV) mechanism to provide indirect supervision and further consolidates the distant annotations to benefit multi-classification RE models. The NLI-based indirect supervision acquires only one relation verbalization template from humans as a semantically general template for each relationship, and then the template set is enriched by high-quality textual patterns automatically mined from the distantly annotated corpus. With two simple and effective data consolidation strategies, the quality of training data is substantially improved. Extensive experiments demonstrate that the proposed framework significantly improves the SOTA performance (up to 7.73\% of F1) on distantly supervised RE benchmark datasets.

Broadband Terahertz Quantum Cascade Laser Dual-Comb Sources with Off-Resonant Microwave Injection

Broadband dual-comb spectroscopy has attracted increasing interests due to its unique advantages in high spectral resolution, fast detection, and so on. Although the dual-comb technique is relatively mature in the infrared wavelengths, it is, currently, not commercially capable of practical applications in the terahertz regime due to the lack of high performance broadband terahertz dual-comb sources. In the terahertz frequency range, the electrically pumped quantum cascade laser (QCL) is a suitable candidate for the dual-comb operation. However, free running terahertz QCL dual-comb sources normally show limited optical bandwidths ($\sim$100-200 GHz). Although the resonant microwave injection locking has been widely used to broaden the emission spectra of terahertz QCLs by modulating the laser drive current at the cavity round-trip frequency, it is hard to be employed to broaden the dual-comb bandwidths due to the large phase noise induced by the resonant injection and non-ideal microwave circuits. Therefore, it is challenging to obtain broadband terahertz dual-comb sources that can fully exploits the laser gain bandwidth. Here, we employ an off-resonant microwave injection to significantly broaden the dual-comb bandwidth of a terahertz QCL dual-comb source emitting around 4.2 THz. The measured optical dual-comb bandwidth is broadened from 147 GHz in free running to $>$450 GHz under the off-resonant injection. The broadened dual-comb bandwidth is experimentally proved by the transmission measurements of a filter and a GaAs etalon. By performing a simple numerical analysis based on a rate equation model, we explain that the broadband dual-comb operation under the off-resonant microwave injection could be resulted from a wider lasing bandwidth and a higher degree of phase matching.

Self-Referenced Terahertz Semiconductor Dual-Comb Sources

Employing two frequency combs with a slight difference in repetition frequencies, the dual-comb source shows unique advantages in high precision spectroscopy, imaging, ranging, communications, etc. In the terahertz (THz) frequency range, the electrically pumped quantum cascade laser (QCL) offers the possibility of realizing the compact dual-comb source due to its semiconductor-based chip-scale configuration. Although the active stabilization of a THz QCL dual-comb source was demonstrated by phase locking one of the dual-comb lines, the full stabilization of all dual-comb lines is still challenging. Here, we propose a self-reference method to obtain a fully stabilized dual-comb signal on a pure THz QCL platform. Without using any external locking components, we filter out one dual-comb line and beat it with the whole dual-comb signal, which eliminates the common carrier offset frequency noise and reduces the dual-comb repetition frequency noise. It is experimentally demonstrated that the self-reference technique can significantly improve the long-term stability of the dual-comb signal. A record of the ``maxhold" linewidth of 14.8 kHz (60 s time duration) is obtained by implementing the self-reference technique, while without the self-reference the dual-comb lines show a ``maxhold" linewidth of 2 MHz (15 s time duration). The method provides the simplest way to improve the long-term stability of THz QCL dual-comb sources, which can be further adopted for high precision measurements.

Distantly Supervised Named Entity Recognition via Confidence-Based Multi-Class Positive and Unlabeled Learning

In this paper, we study the named entity recognition (NER) problem under distant supervision. Due to the incompleteness of the external dictionaries and/or knowledge bases, such distantly annotated training data usually suffer from a high false negative rate. To this end, we formulate the Distantly Supervised NER (DS-NER) problem via Multi-class Positive and Unlabeled (MPU) learning and propose a theoretically and practically novel CONFidence-based MPU (Conf-MPU) approach. To handle the incomplete annotations, Conf-MPU consists of two steps. First, a confidence score is estimated for each token of being an entity token. Then, the proposed Conf-MPU risk estimation is applied to train a multi-class classifier for the NER task. Thorough experiments on two benchmark datasets labeled by various external knowledge demonstrate the superiority of the proposed Conf-MPU over existing DS-NER methods.

Transmutation operators and expansions for $1$-loop Feynman integrands

In this paper, the connections among $1$-loop Feynman integrands of a large variety of theories with massless external states are further investigated. The work includes two parts. First, we construct a new class of differential operators which transmute the $1$-loop gravitational Feynman integrands to $1$-loop Yang-Mills Feynman integrands. The new operators are commutable with the integration of loop momentum, thus the corresponding transmutational relations hold at not only the integrands level, but also the $1$-loop amplitudes level. Secondly, by using $1$-loop level transmutational relations, together with some general requirements such as gauge and Lorentz invariance, we derive the expansions of the Feynman integrands of one theory to those of other theories. The unified web for expansions is established, including a wide range of theories which are gravitational theory, Einstein-Yang-Mills theory, Einstein-Maxwell theory, Born-Infeld theory, pure Yang-Mills theory, Yang-Mills-scalar theory, special Yang-Mills-scalar theory, Dirac-Born-Infeld theory, extended Dirac-Born-Infeld theory, special Galileon theory, non-linear sigma model. The systematic rules for evaluating coefficients in the expansions are provided, and the duality between transmutational relations and expansions is shown.

Proxy-bridged Image Reconstruction Network for Anomaly Detection in Medical Images

Anomaly detection in medical images refers to the identification of abnormal images with only normal images in the training set. Most existing methods solve this problem with a self-reconstruction framework, which tends to learn an identity mapping and reduces the sensitivity to anomalies. To mitigate this problem, in this paper, we propose a novel Proxy-bridged Image Reconstruction Network (ProxyAno) for anomaly detection in medical images. Specifically, we use an intermediate proxy to bridge the input image and the reconstructed image. We study different proxy types, and we find that the superpixel-image (SI) is the best one. We set all pixels' intensities within each superpixel as their average intensity, and denote this image as SI. The proposed ProxyAno consists of two modules, a Proxy Extraction Module and an Image Reconstruction Module. In the Proxy Extraction Module, a memory is introduced to memorize the feature correspondence for normal image to its corresponding SI, while the memorized correspondence does not apply to the abnormal images, which leads to the information loss for abnormal image and facilitates the anomaly detection. In the Image Reconstruction Module, we map an SI to its reconstructed image. Further, we crop a patch from the image and paste it on the normal SI to mimic the anomalies, and enforce the network to reconstruct the normal image even with the pseudo abnormal SI. In this way, our network enlarges the reconstruction error for anomalies. Extensive experiments on brain MR images, retinal OCT images and retinal fundus images verify the effectiveness of our method for both image-level and pixel-level anomaly detection.

Ultrabroadband THz/IR upconversion and photovoltaic response in semi-conductor ratchet based upconverter

An ultrabroadband upconversion device is demonstrated by direct tandem integration of a p-type GaAs/AlxGa1-xAs ratchet photodetector (RP) with a GaAs double heterojunction LED (DH-LED) using the molecular beam epitaxy (MBE). An ultrabroadband photoresponse from terahertz (THz) to near infrared (NIR) region (4-200 THz) was realized that covers a much wider frequency range com-pared with the existing upconversion devices. Broadband IR/THz radiation from 1000 K blackbody is successfully upconverted into NIR photons which can be detected by commercial Si-based device. The normal incidence absorption of the RP simplifies the structure of the RP-LED device and make it more compact compared with the inter-subband transition based upconverters. In addition to the up-conversion function, the proposed upconverter is also tested as photovoltaic detectors in the infrared region (15-200 THz) without an applied bias voltage due to the ratchet effect.

Improved comb and dual-comb operation of terahertz quantum cascade lasers utilizing a symmetric thermal dissipation

In the terahertz frequency range, the quantum cascade laser (QCL) is a suitable platform for the frequency comb and dual-comb operation. Improved comb performances have been always much in demand. In this work, by employing a symmetric thermal dissipation scheme, we report an improved frequency comb and dual-comb operation of terahertz QCLs. Two configurations of cold fingers, i.e., type A and B with asymmetric and symmetric thermal dissipation schemes, respectively, are investigated here. A finite-element thermal analysis is carried out to study the parametric effects on the thermal management of the terahertz QCL. The modeling reveals that the symmetric thermal dissipation (type B) results in a more uniform thermal conduction and lower maximum temperature in the active region of the laser, compared to the traditional asymmetric thermal dissipation scheme (type A). To verify the simulation, experiments are further performed by measuring laser performance and comb characteristics of terahertz QCLs emitting around 4.2 THz mounted on type A and type B cold fingers. The experimental results show that the symmetric thermal dissipation approach (type B) is effective for improving the comb and dual-comb operation of terahertz QCLs, which can be further widely adopted for spectroscopy, imaging, and near-field applications.

On differential operators and unifying relations for $1$-loop Feynman integrands

We generalize the unifying relations for tree amplitudes to the $1$-loop Feynman integrands. By employing the $1$-loop CHY formula, we construct differential operators which transmute the $1$-loop gravitational Feynman integrand to Feynman integrands for a wide range of theories, include Einstein-Yang-Mills theory, Einstein-Maxwell theory, pure Yang-Mills theory, Yang-Mills-scalar theory, Born-Infeld theory, Dirac-Born-Infeld theory, bi-adjoint scalar theory, non-linear sigma model, as well as special Galileon theory. The unified web at $1$-loop level is established. Under the well known unitarity cut, the $1$-loop level operators will factorize into two tree level operators. Such factorization is also discussed.

Automatic segmentation of vertebral features on ultrasound spine images using Stacked Hourglass Network

Objective: The spinous process angle (SPA) is one of the essential parameters to denote three-dimensional (3-D) deformity of spine. We propose an automatic segmentation method based on Stacked Hourglass Network (SHN) to detect the spinous processes (SP) on ultrasound (US) spine images and to measure the SPAs of clinical scoliotic subjects. Methods: The network was trained to detect vertebral SP and laminae as five landmarks on 1200 ultrasound transverse images and validated on 100 images. All the processed transverse images with highlighted SP and laminae were reconstructed into a 3D image volume, and the SPAs were measured on the projected coronal images. The trained network was tested on 400 images by calculating the percentage of correct keypoints (PCK); and the SPA measurements were evaluated on 50 scoliotic subjects by comparing the results from US images and radiographs. Results: The trained network achieved a high average PCK (86.8%) on the test datasets, particularly the PCK of SP detection was 90.3%. The SPAs measured from US and radiographic methods showed good correlation (r>0.85), and the mean absolute differences (MAD) between two modalities were 3.3°, which was less than the clinical acceptance error (5°). Conclusion: The vertebral features can be accurately segmented on US spine images using SHN, and the measurement results of SPA from US data was comparable to the gold standard from radiography.

Active Stabilization of Terahertz Semiconductor Dual-Comb Laser Sources Employing a Phase Locking Technique

Dual-comb sources with equally spaced and low phase noise frequency lines are of great importance for high resolution spectroscopy and metrology. In the terahertz frequency range, electrically pumped semiconductor quantum cascade lasers (QCLs) are suitable candidates for frequency comb and dual-comb operation. For a single laser frequency comb, the repetition rate can be locked using a microwave injection locking and the carrier frequency can be locked to a highly stable source. However, for the locking of two laser combs, four frequencies (two repetition rates and two carrier offset frequencies) should be simultaneously locked; If one only refers to the dual-comb signal, two relative frequencies, i.e., the offset frequency and repetition frequency of one laser against those of the other laser, should be locked. Although the locking techniques that have been successfully used for a single laser comb can be, in principle, applied to a dual-comb laser source, the complete locking considerably complicates the implementation of such a system. Here, we propose a method to stabilize a terahertz QCL dual-comb source by phase locking one of the dual-comb lines to a radio frequency (RF) synthesizer. This technique forces one of the lasers to follow the tone of the other one (keeping the sum of the carrier offset frequency difference and repetition frequency difference between the two laser combs as a constant) by exploiting a laser self-detection that avoids the use of an external detector. Through the demonstration of this locking technique, we demonstrate that the dual-comb can generate periodic pulses over a 2 us time scale, showing that the terahertz QCL comb without a control of the repetition rate can produce pulsed-type waveforms.

Automatic Segmentation and Visualization of Choroid in OCT with Knowledge Infused Deep Learning

The choroid provides oxygen and nourishment to the outer retina thus is related to the pathology of various ocular diseases. Optical coherence tomography (OCT) is advantageous in visualizing and quantifying the choroid in vivo. (1) The lower boundary of the choroid (choroid-sclera interface) in OCT is fuzzy, which makes the automatic segmentation difficult and inaccurate. (2) The visualization of the choroid is hindered by the vessel shadows from the superficial layers of the inner retina. In this paper, we propose to incorporate medical and imaging prior knowledge with deep learning to address these two problems. We propose a biomarker infused global-to-local network for the choroid segmentation. It leverages the choroidal thickness, a primary biomarker in clinic, as a constraint to improve the segmentation accuracy. We also design a global-to-local strategy in the choroid segmentation: a global module is used to segment all the retinal and choroidal layers simultaneously for suppressing overfitting and providing global structure information, then a local module is used to refine the segmentation with the biomarker infusion. To eliminate the retinal vessel shadows, we propose a pipeline that firstly use anatomical and OCT imaging knowledge to locate the shadows using their projection on the retinal pigment epithelium layer, then the contents of the choroidal vasculature at the shadow locations are predicted with an edge-to-texture generative adversarial inpainting network. The experiments show our method outperforms the existing methods on both the segmentation and shadow elimination tasks. We further apply the proposed method in a clinical prospective study for understanding the pathology of glaucoma by detecting the structure and vascular changes of the choroid related to the elevation of intra-ocular pressure.

Encoding Structure-Texture Relation with P-Net for Anomaly Detection in Retinal Images

Anomaly detection in retinal image refers to the identification of abnormality caused by various retinal diseases/lesions, by only leveraging normal images in training phase. Normal images from healthy subjects often have regular structures (e.g., the structured blood vessels in the fundus image, or structured anatomy in optical coherence tomography image). On the contrary, the diseases and lesions often destroy these structures. Motivated by this, we propose to leverage the relation between the image texture and structure to design a deep neural network for anomaly detection. Specifically, we first extract the structure of the retinal images, then we combine both the structure features and the last layer features extracted from original health image to reconstruct the original input healthy image. The image feature provides the texture information and guarantees the uniqueness of the image recovered from the structure. In the end, we further utilize the reconstructed image to extract the structure and measure the difference between structure extracted from original and the reconstructed image. On the one hand, minimizing the reconstruction difference behaves like a regularizer to guarantee that the image is corrected reconstructed. On the other hand, such structure difference can also be used as a metric for normality measurement. The whole network is termed as P-Net because it has a ``P'' shape. Extensive experiments on RESC dataset and iSee dataset validate the effectiveness of our approach for anomaly detection in retinal images. Further, our method also generalizes well to novel class discovery in retinal images and anomaly detection in real-world images.

Note on scalar-graviton and scalar-photon-graviton amplitudes

In this short note, we propose an algorithm based on the expansions of amplitudes, the dimensional reduction technic and the differential operators, to calculate the tree level scalar-graviton amplitudes with two massive scalars, as well as the tree level scalar-photon-graviton amplitudes with two massive scalars and one photon. While applying the unitarity method, these amplitudes are necessary inputs for the calculation of post-Newtonian and post-Minkowskian expansions in general relativity for two massive charged objects interact with gravity and electromagnetic field.

Transmuting off-shell CHY integrals in the double-cover framework

In this paper, by defining off-shell amplitudes as off-shell CHY integrals, and redefining the longitudinal operator, we demonstrate that the differential operators which link on-shell amplitudes for a variety of theories together, also link off-shell amplitudes in the similar manner. Based on the algebraic property of the differential operator, we also generalize three relations among color-ordered on-shell amplitudes, including the color-ordered reversed relation, the photon decoupling relation, the Kleiss-Kuijf relation, to off-shell ones. The off-shell CHY integrals are chosen to be in the double-cover framework, thus, as a by product, our result also provides a verification for the double-cover construction.

Factorizations for tree amplitudes in the double-cover framework: from gravity to other theories

In this paper, we demonstrate that the factorizations for tree amplitudes in the double-cover framework, for various theories, can be generated from the gravity amplitude in the double-cover prescription. Using our method, the factorized formulae for amplitudes of Yang-Mills theory, special Yang-Mills-scalar theory, and bi-adjoint scalar theory, have been derived. The differential operators indicate some non-trivial relationships among factorizations for above theories, as can be understood through four angles which are factorization channels, pole-structures, gauge choices, as well as BCFW recursions.
