Strict Arakelov inequality for a family of varieties of general type

Let $f:\, X\to Y$ be a semistable non-isotrivial family of $n$-folds over a smooth projective curve with discriminant locus $S \subseteq Y$ and with general fibre $F$ of general type. We show the strict Arakelov inequality \[\frac{\mathrm{deg}\, f_*ω_{X/Y}^ν}{\mathrm{rank}\, f_*ω_{X/Y}^ν} < {nν\over 2}\cdot\mathrm{deg}\,Ω^1_Y(\log S),\] for all $ν\in \mathbb N$ such that the $ν$-th pluricanonical linear system $|ω^ν_F|$ is birational. This answers a question asked by Möller, Viehweg and the third named author.

Higgs Bundles in Geometry and Arithmetic

We introduce the notions of deformation Higgs bundle and Riemann-Finsler metric on the moduli space of polarized varieties. We also use the Higgs-de Rham flow in the p-adic setting. These are the key novelties in our program.

A note on p-adic Simpson correspondence

Given a proper smooth $p$-adic variety, we show a comparison theorem for the $p$-adic Simpson correspondence constructed by Faltings and Riemann-Hilbert correspondence constructed by Scholze. As an application we formulate a sufficient condition for $\overline{\mathbb Q}_p$-local system being de Rham. We study a $p$-adic analogue of Simpson's $\mathbb C^*$-action on the set of isomorphism classes of Higgs bundles and the corresponding Galois action on the set of isomorphism classes of generalized representations of the étale fundamental group.

Picard theorems for moduli spaces of polarized varieties

As a result of our study of the hyperbolicity of the moduli space of polarized manifold, we give a general big Picard theorem for a holomorphic curve on a log-smooth pair $(X,D)$ such that $W=X\setminus D$ admits a Finsler pseudometric that is strongly negatively curved when pulled back to the curve. We show, by some refinements of the classical Viehweg-Zuo construction, that this latter condition holds for the base space $W$, if nonsingular, of any algebraic family of polarized complex projective manifolds with semi-ample canonical bundles whose induced moduli map $ϕ$ to the moduli space of such manifolds is generically finite and any $ϕ$-horizontal holomorphic curve in $W$. This yields the big Picard theorem for any holomorphic curves in the base space $U$ of such an algebraic family by allowing this base space to be singular but with generically finite moduli map. An immediate and useful corollary is that any holomorphic map from an algebraic variety to such a base space $U$ must be algebraic, i.e., the corresponding holomorphic family must be algebraic. We also show the related algebraic hyperbolicity property of such a base space $U$, which generalizes previous Arakelov inequalities and weak boundedness results for moduli stacks and offers, in addition to the Picard theorem above, another evidence in favor of the hyperbolic embeddability of such an $U$.

Holomorphic curves in Base Spaces of Families of Polarized Manifolds

For a smooth family $V \to U$ of polarized manifolds with semi-ample canonical sheaves, we show the following result: any entire curve must be contained in the fibers of the classifying map from the base space $U$ to the moduli space. This settles the Relative Isotriviality Conjecture, \cite[Conjecture 1.5]{DLSZ}.

Finiteness of logarithmic crystalline representations II

Let $K$ be an unramified $p$-adic local field and let $W$ be the ring of integers of $K$. Let $(X,S)/W$ be a smooth proper scheme together with a simple normal crossings divisor and fix positive integers $r$ and $f$. We show that the set of absolutely irreducible representations $π_1(X_{\bar K})\rightarrow \mathrm{GL}_r(\mathbb{Z}_{p^f})$ that come from log crystalline $\mathbb Z_{p^f}$-local systems over $(X_K,S_K)$ of rank $r$ is finite. The proof uses $p$-adic nonabelian Hodge theory and a finiteness result due Abe/Lafforgue.

Finiteness of logarithmic crystalline representations

Let $K$ be an unramified $p$-adic local field and let $W$ be the ring of integers of $K$. Let $(X,S)/W$ be a smooth proper scheme together with a normal crossings divisor. We show that there are only finitely many log crystalline $\mathbb Z_{p^f}$-local systems over $X_K\setminus S_K$ of given rank and with geometrically absolutely irreducible residual representation, up to twisting by a character. The proof uses $p$-adic nonabelian Hodge theory and a finiteness result due Abe/Lafforgue.

Deformation theory of periodic Higgs-de Rham flows

In this note we study the deformation theory of periodic (logarithmic) Higgs-de Rham flows. Under suitable numerical assumptions, this is equivalent to the deformation theory of torsion (logarithmic) Fontaine-Faltings modules. As an application, we formulate an \emph{ordinarity} condition, which provides a sufficient condition for a $p^n$-torsion crystalline representation to deform to a $p^{n+1}$-torsion crystalline representation.

Projective Crystalline Representations of Étale Fundamental Groups and Twisted Periodic Higgs-de Rham Flow

This paper contains three new results. {\bf 1}.We introduce new notions of projective crystalline representations and twisted periodic Higgs-de Rham flows. These new notions generalize crystalline representations of étale fundamental groups introduced in [7,10] and periodic Higgs-de Rham flows introduced in [19]. We establish an equivalence between the categories of projective crystalline representations and twisted periodic Higgs-de Rham flows via the category of twisted Fontaine-Faltings module which is also introduced in this paper. {\bf 2.}We study the base change of these objects over very ramified valuation rings and show that a stable periodic Higgs bundle gives rise to a geometrically absolutely irreducible crystalline representation. {\bf 3.} We investigate the dynamic of self-maps induced by the Higgs-de Rham flow on the moduli spaces of rank-2 stable Higgs bundles of degree 1 on $\mathbb{P}^1$ with logarithmic structure on marked points $D:=\{x_1,\,...,x_n\}$ for $n\geq 4$ and construct infinitely many geometrically absolutely irreducible $\mathrm{PGL_2}(\mathbb Z_p^{\mathrm{ur}})$-crystalline representations of $π_1^\text{et}(\mathbb{P}^1_{\mathbb{Q}_p^\text{ur}}\setminus D)$. We find an explicit formula of the self-map for the case $\{0,\,1,\,\infty,\,λ\}$ and conjecture that a Higgs bundle is periodic if and only if the zero of the Higgs field is the image of a torsion point in the associated elliptic curve $\mathcal{C}_λ$ defined by $ y^2=x(x-1)(x-λ)$ with the order coprime to $p$.

Special subvarieties in Mumford-Tate varieties

Let X be a Mumford-Tate variety, i.e., a quotient of a Mumford-Tate domain D by a discrete subgroup. Mumford-Tate varieties are generalizations of Shimura varieties. We define the notion of a special subvariety Y in X (of Shimura type), and formulate necessary criteria for Y to be special. Our method consists in looking at finitely many compactified special curves C_i in Y, and testing whether the inclusion of the union of all C_i in Y satisfies certain properties. One of them is the so-called relative proportionality condition. In this paper, we give a new formulation of this numerical criterion in the case of Mumford-Tate varieties X. In this way, we give necessary and sufficient criteria for a subvariety Y of X to be a special subvariety in the sense of the Andre-Oort conjecture. We discuss in detail the important case where X=A_g, the moduli space of principally polarized abelian varieties.

The Oort conjecture for Shimura curves of small unitary rank

We prove that a Shimura curve in the Siegel modular variety is not generically contained in the open Torelli locus as long as the rank of unitary part in its canonical Higgs bundle satisfies a numerical upper bound. As an application we show that the Coleman-Oort conjecture holds for Shimura curves associated to partial corestriction upon a suitable choice of parameters, which generalizes a construction due to Mumford.

Base change of twisted Fontaine-Faltings modules and Twisted Higgs-de Rham flows over very ramified valuation rings

In this short notes, we prove a stronger version of Theorem 0.6 in our previous paper arXiv:1709.01485: Given a smooth log scheme $(\mathcal{X} \supset \mathcal{D})_{W(\mathbb{F}_q)}$, each stable twisted $f$-periodic logarithmic Higgs bundle $(E,θ)$ over the closed fiber $(X \supset D)_{\mathbb{F}_q}$ will correspond to a $\mathrm{PGL}_r(\mathbb{F}_{p^f})$-crystalline representation of $π_1((\mathcal{X} \setminus \mathcal{D})_{W(\mathbb{F}_q)[\frac{1}{p}]})$ such that its restriction to the geometric fundamental group is absolutely irreducible.

On a question of Ekedahl and Serre

In this paper we study various aspects of the Ekedahl-Serre problem. We formulate questions of Ekedahl-Serre type and Coleman-Oort type for general weakly special subvarieties in the Siegel moduli space, propose a conjecture relating these two questions, and provide examples supporting these questions. The main new result is an upper bound of genera for curves over number fields whose Jacobians are isogeneous to products of elliptic curves satisfying the Sato-Tate equidistribution, and we also refine previous results showing that certain weakly special subvarieties only meet the open Torelli locus in at most finitely many points.

On the slope conjecture of Barja and Stoppino for fibred surfaces

Let $f:\,S \to B$ be a locally non-trivial relatively minimal fibration of genus $g\geq 2$ with relative irregularity $q_f$. It was conjectured by Barja and Stoppino that the slope $λ_f\geq \frac{4(g-1)}{g-q_f}$. We prove the conjecture when $q_f$ is small with respect to $g$; we also construct counterexamples when $g$ is odd and $q_f=(g+1)/2$.

Semistable Higgs bundles, periodic Higgs bundles and representations of algebraic fundamental groups

Let $k $ be the algebraic closure of a finite field of odd characteristic $p$ and $X$ a smooth projective scheme over the Witt ring $W(k)$ which is geometrically connected in characteristic zero. We introduce the notion of Higgs-de Rham flow and prove that the category of periodic Higgs-de Rham flows over $X/W(k)$ is equivalent to the category of Fontaine modules, hence further equivalent to the category of crystalline representations of the étale fundamental group $π_1(X_K)$ of the generic fiber of $X$, after Fontaine-Laffaille and Faltings. Moreover, we prove that every semistable Higgs bundle over the special fiber $X_k$ of $X$ of rank $\leq p$ initiates a semistable Higgs-de Rham flow and thus those of rank $\leq p-1$ with trivial Chern classes induce $k$-representations of $π_1(X_K)$. A fundamental construction in this paper is the inverse Cartier transform over a truncated Witt ring. In characteristic $p$, it was constructed by Ogus-Vologodsky in the nonabelian Hodge theory in positive characteristic; in the affine local case, our construction is related to the local Ogus-Vologodsky correspondence of Shiho.

Finiteness of hyperelliptic and superelliptic curves with CM Jacobians

In this paper we study the Coleman-Oort conjecture for superelliptic curves, i.e., curves defined by affine equations $y^n=F(x)$ with $F$ a separable polynomial. We prove that up to isomorphism there are at most finitely many superelliptic curves of fixed genus $g\geq 8$ with CM Jacobians. The proof relies on the geometric structures of Shimura subvarieties in Siegel modular varieties and the stability properties of Higgs bundles associated to fibred surfaces.

Singular Fibers and Kodaira Dimensions

Let $f:\,X \to \mathbb{P}^1$ be a non-isotrivial semi-stable family of varieties of dimension $m$ over $\mathbb{P}^1$ with $s$ singular fibers. Assume that the smooth fibers $F$ are minimal, i.e., their canonical line bundles are semiample. Then $κ(X)\leq κ(F)+1$. If $κ(X)=κ(F)+1$, then $s>\frac{4}m+2$. If $κ(X)\geq 0$, then $s\geq\frac{4}m+2$. In particular, if $m=1$, $s=6$ and $κ(X)=0$, then the family $f$ is Teichmüller.
