Weak-localization and rectification current in non-diffusive quantum wires

We show that electron transport in disordered quantum wires can be described by a modified Cooperon equation, which coincides in form with the Dirac equation for the massive fermions in a 1+1 dimensional system. In this new formalism, we calculate the DC electric current induced by electromagnetic fields in quasi-one-dimensional rings. This current changes sign, from diamagnetic to paramagnetic, depending on the amplitude and frequency of the time-dependent external electromagnetic field.

Devil's Staircase in Magnetoresistance of a Periodic Array of Scatterers

The nonlinear response to an external electric field is studied for classical non-interacting charged particles under the influence of a uniform magnetic field, a periodic potential, and an effective friction force. We find numerical and analytical evidence that the ratio of transversal to longitudinal resistance forms a Devil's staircase. The staircase is attributed to the dynamical phenomenon of mode-locking.

Dephasing of Electrons by Two-Level Defects in Quantum Dots

The electron dephasing time $τ_ϕ$ in a diffusive quantum dot is calculated by considering the interaction between the electron and dynamical defects, modelled as two-level system. Using the standard tunneling model of glasses, we obtain a linear temperature dependence of $1/τ_ϕ$, consistent with the experimental observation. However, we find that, in order to obtain dephasing times on the order of nanoseconds, the number of two-level defects needs to be substantially larger than the typical concentration in glasses. We also find a finite system-size dependence of $τ_ϕ$, which can be used to probe the effectiveness of surface-aggregated defects.

Parity Effects in Stacked Nanoscopic Quantum Rings

The ground state and the dielectric response of stacked quantum rings are investigated in the presence of an applied magnetic field along the ring axis. For odd number $N$ of rings and an electric field perpendicular to the axis, a linear Stark effect occurs at distinct values of the magnetic field. At those fields energy levels cross in the absence of electric field. For even values of $N$ a quadratic Stark effect is expected in all cases, but the induced electric polarization is discontinuous at those special magnetic fields. Experimental consequences for related nanostructures are discussed.

Addition Spectra of Chaotic Quantum Dots: Interplay between Interactions and Geometry

We investigate the influence of interactions and geometry on ground states of clean chaotic quantum dots using the self-consistent Hartree-Fock method. We find two distinct regimes of interaction strength: While capacitive energy fluctuations $δχ$ follow approximately a random matrix prediction for weak interactions, there is a crossover to a regime where $δχ$ is strongly enhanced and scales roughly with interaction strength. This enhancement is related to the rearrangement of charges into ordered states near the dot edge. This effect is non-universal depending on dot shape and size. It may provide additional insight into recent experiments on statistics of Coulomb blockade peak spacings.

Pairing in the quantum Hall system

We find an analogy between the single skyrmion state in the quantum Hall system and the BCS superconducting state and address that the quantum mechanical origin of the skyrmion is electronic pairing. The skyrmion phase is found to be unstable for magnetic fields above the critical field $B_{c}(T)$ at temperature $T$, which is well represented by the relation $B_c(T)/B_{c}(0) \approx {[1-(T/T_c)^3]}^{1/2}$.

Symmetry-breaking skyrmion states in fractional quantum Hall systems

We calculate in an analyical fashion the energies and net spins of skyrmions in fractional quantum Hall systems, based on the suggestion that skyrmion states are spontaneously $L_Z$ and $S_Z$ symmetry-breaking states. The quasihole-skyrmion state with a charge $-e/3$ around $ν$ = 1/3, where the ground state is known as a spin-polarized ferromagnetic state, is found to exist even in high magnetic fields up to about 7 T for GaAs samples.

A microscopic theory of skyrmion excitations in the fractional quantum Hall system

We present a microscopic theory of skyrmion and antiskyrmion excitations in fractional quantum Hall systems, and calculate in an analytical fashion their excitation energies. From the calculated net spins at various fractional filling factors, we find the magnetic field dependence of the spin polarization of the skyrmion-condensated state.

Correlation effects in a quantum dot at high magnetic fields

We investigate the effects of electron correlations on the ground state energy and the chemical potential of a droplet confined by a parabolic potential at high magnetic fields. We demonstrate the importance of correlations in estimating the transition field at which the first edge reconstruction of the maximum density droplet occurs in the spin polarized regime.
