Magnetic flux, Wilson line and orbifold

We study torus/orbifold models with magnetic flux and Wilson line background. The number of zero-modes and their profiles depend on those backgrounds. That has interesting implications from the viewpoint of particle phenomenology.

Accions

Axion fields provide the most elegant solution to the strong CP problem. In string compactifications it is difficult to obtain an axion whose decay constant is consistent with current cosmological bounds. We examine this question in theories with accidental U(1) symmetries that appear as low energy remnants of discrete symmetries. We refer to the axion-like particles from the spontaneous breakdown of these symmetries as accions. In such systems, the accion decay constant depends on the vacuum configuration and can be lowered to fit the bounds. Furthermore, we find that such accions with consistent decay constant can be embedded in special vacua of Z_6-II orbifold models with realistic features.

Three generation magnetized orbifold models

We study three generation models in the four-dimensional spacetime, which can be derived from the ten-dimensional N=1 super Yang-Mills theory on the orbifold background with a non-vanishing magnetic flux. We classify the flavor structures and show possible patterns of Yukawa matrices. Some examples of numerical studies are also shown.

Contorted Flavors in Grand Unification and Proton Decay

Conventionally we collect electron and up/down-quarks (u,d)+(nu_e,e) to form unified generations, and collect the left-handed and the right-handed fermions of the same flavors (nu_e,e)+e^c. We can alternatively have a contorted multiplet, made by pairing different quarks and leptons, like (u,d)+(nu_mu,mu) or (u,d)+(nu_tau,tau), and/or between different left and right handed fermions to (nu_e,e)+mu^c, etc. These can suppress proton decay, due to its high flavor dependence, while having the correct fermion masses.

Higher Order Couplings from Heterotic Orbifold Theory

We calculate couplings of arbitrary order from correlation functions among twisted strings, using conformal field theory. Twisted strings arise in heterotic string compactified on orbifolds yielding matter fields in the low energy limit. We calculate completely the classical and the quantum amplitude including normalization, up to a contribution from Kahler potential. The classical action has saddle points which are interpreted as worldsheet instantons described by metastable untwisted strings, formed by twisted strings distributed at certain fixed points. This understanding generalizes the area rule, in the case that the locations of twisted strings do not form a polygon, and provides a general rule for calculating these kinds of instanton corrections. An interpretation of couplings involving linearly combined states is given, which commonly appear in non-prime order orbifolds. The quantum part of the amplitude is given by ratios of gamma functions with order one arguments.

Discrete R-symmetry anomalies in heterotic orbifold models

Anomalies of discrete R-symmetries appearing in heterotic orbifold models are studied. We find that the mixed anomalies for different gauge groups satisfy the universal Green-Schwarz (GS) condition, indicating that these anomalies are canceled by the GS mechanism. An exact relation between the anomaly coefficients of the discrete R-symmetries and one-loop beta-function coefficients is obtained. We also find that the discrete R-symmetries have a good chance to be unbroken down to the supersymmetry breaking scale. Even below this scale a $Z_2$ subgroup is unbroken, which may be an origin of the R-parity of the minimal supersymmetric standard model. Relations between the R-symmetry anomalies and T-duality anomalies are also investigated.

String compactification, QCD axion and axion-photon-photon coupling

It is pointed out that there exist a few problems to be overcome toward an observable sub-eV QCD axion in superstring compactification. We give a general expression for the axion decay constant. For a large domain wall number $N_{DW}$, the axion decay constant can be substantially lowered from a generic value of a scalar singlet VEV. The Yukawa coupling structure in the recent $Z_{12-I}$ model is studied completely, including the needed nonrenormalizable terms toward realistic quark and lepton masses. In this model we find an approximate global symmetry and vacuum so that a QCD axion results but its decay constant is at the GUT scale. The axion-photon-photon coupling is calculated for a realistic vacuum satisfying the quark and lepton mass matrix conditions. It is the first time calculation of $c_{aγγ}$ in realistic string compactifications: $c_{aγγ}={5/3}-1.93\simeq -0.26$.

Intersecting Brane World from Type I Compactification

We elaborate that general intersecting brane models on orbifolds are obtained from type I string compactifications and their T-duals. Symmetry breaking and restoration occur via recombination and parallel separation of branes, preserving supersymmetry. The Ramond-Ramond tadpole cancelation and the toron quantization constrain the spectrum as a branching of the adjoints of SO(32), up to orbifold projections. Since the recombination changes the gauge coupling, the single gauge coupling of type I could give rise to different coupling below the unification scale. This is due to the nonlocal properties of the Dirac-Born-Infeld action. The weak mixing angle sin^2 theta_W = 3/8 is naturally explained by embedding the quantum numbers to those of SO(10).

Unification in Intersecting Brane Models

We propose a unification scenario for supersymmetric intersecting brane models. The quarks and leptons are embedded into adjoint representations of SO(32), which are obtained and break by type I string compactified on orbifolds. Its single unified gauge coupling can give rise to different gauge couplings below the unification scale, due to effects of magnetic fluxes. The crucial mechanism is brane recombination preserving supersymmetry.

Heterotic SO(32) model building in four dimensions

Four dimensional heterotic SO(32) orbifold models are classified systematically with model building applications in mind. We obtain all Z3, Z7 and Z2N models based on vectorial gauge shifts. The resulting gauge groups are reminiscent of those of type-I model building, as they always take the form SO(2n_0)xU(n_1)x...xU(n_{N-1})xSO(2n_N). The complete twisted spectrum is determined simultaneously for all orbifold models in a parametric way depending on n_0,...,n_N, rather than on a model by model basis. This reveals interesting patterns in the twisted states: They are always built out of vectors and anti--symmetric tensors of the U(n) groups, and either vectors or spinors of the SO(2n) groups. Our results may shed additional light on the S-duality between heterotic and type-I strings in four dimensions. As a spin-off we obtain an SO(10) GUT model with four generations from the Z4 orbifold.

Gauge Unification via Stable Brane Recombination

We study the transition between parallel and intersecting branes on a torus. Spontaneous symmetry breaking of nonabelian gauge symmetry is understood as brane separation, and a more general intermediate deformation is discussed. We argue that there exists supersymmetry preserving transition and we can always have parallel branes as a final state. The transition is interpreted due to dynamics of the F- and D-string junctions and their generalization to (F, D$p$) bound states. The gauge group and coupling unification is achieved, also as a result of supersymmetry. From the tadpole cancelation condition, we naturally have some class of intersecting brane models as broken phases of Type I theory with SO(32) gauge group.

Spectra of Heterotic Strings on Orbifolds

We obtain the spectrum of heterotic strings compactified on orbifolds, focusing on its algebraic structure. Affine Lie algebra provides its current algebra and representations. In particular the twisted spectrum and the Abelian charge are understood. The twisted version of algebra is used in the homomorphism from the orbifold action to the group action. The relation between the conformal weight and the mass gives a handy rule.

Higgsino mass matrix ansatz for MSSM

An ansatz, Det. $M_{\tilde H}=0,$ for the Higgsino mass matrix in string orbifold trinification is suggested toward the minimal supersymmetric standard model(MSSM). Small instanton solutions effective around the GUT scale can fulfil this condition. An argument that the couplings contain a moduli field is given for a dynamical realization of this Higgsino mass matrix ansatz.

Three family $Z_3$ orbifold trinification, MSSM and doublet-triplet splitting problem

A $Z_3$ orbifold compactification of $E_8\times E_8^\prime$ heterotic string is considered toward a trinification $SU(3)^3$ with three light families. The GUT scale VEV's of the $SU(2)_W\times U(1)_Y\times SU(3)_c$ singlet chiral fields in two sets of the trinification spectrum allow an acceptable symmetry breaking pattern toward MSSM. We show that a doublet-triplet splitting is related to the absence of a $ΔB$ nonzero operator.

Dynkin diagram strategy for orbifolding with Wilson lines

A simple method for breaking gauge groups by orbifolding is presented. We extend the method of Kac and Peterson to include Wilson lines. The complete classification of the gauge group breaking, e.g. from heterotic string, is now possible. From this Dynkin diagram technique, one can easily visualize the origin and the symmetry pattern of the surviving gauge group.

Softening of SUSY flavor problem from asymptotically free bulk interactions

Recently, it was pointed out that soft masses of the supersymmetric gauge theories with extra dimensions tends to a flavor conserving point, which is a desirable scenario in gravity mediation models. We point out that in 6D we must consider the anomaly free condition in addition to the condition on the asymptotic freedom. From this, we find $E_6$, $E_7$ and $E_8$ are natural candidates in 6D. There is no SU(N) model, but there exist two SO(10) models and SO(2n) models(one each for each $n\ge 6$) satisfying these conditions. In 5 dimensions, there is no such condition on anomaly freedom, but the softening may not be enough.

Z_2 orbifold compactification of heterotic string and 6D SO(16) and E_7 times SU(2) flavor unification models

A Z_2 orbifold compactification of the heterotic string is considered. The resulting 6D GUT groups can be SO(16) or E_7 times SU(2) plus some hidden sector groups. The N=4 supersymmetry is reduced to N=2. In particular, the SO(16) 6D model with one spinor representation 128 can reduce to the previous 5D SO(16) or SO(14) family unification models after compactifying the sixth dimension. To obtain one spinor, we have to take into account the left-over center of SO(16). We also comment on the E_7 times SU(2) model.
