Effective Action for Non-Geometric Fluxes from Duality Covariant Actions

The (heterotic) double field theories and the exceptional field theories are recently developed for manifestly duality covariant formulation of various supergravity theories, describing low-energy limit of various (heterotic) superstring and M-theory compactifications. These field theories are known to be reduced to the standard descriptions by introducing appropriately parameterized generalized metric and by applying suitably chosen section conditions. We generalize this development to non-geometric backgrounds by utilizing dual fields pertinent to non-geometric fluxes. We introduce different parameterizations for the generalized metric, in terms of the conventional supergravity fields or the dual fields. Under certain simplifying assumptions, we construct new effective action for non-geometric backgrounds. We then obtain the non-geometric backgrounds sourced by exotic branes. From them, we construct their $U$-duality monodromy matrices. The charge of exotic branes obtained from these monodromy matrices agrees perfectly with the charge obtained from the non-geometric flux integral.

Quadratic $α'$-Corrections to Heterotic Double Field Theory

We investigate $α'$-corrections of heterotic double field theory up to quadratic order in the language of supersymmetric O(D,D+dim G) gauged double field theory. After introducing double-vielbein formalism with a parametrization which reproduces heterotic supergravity, we show that supersymmetry for heterotic double field theory up to leading order $α'$-correction is obtained from supersymmetric gauged double field theory. We discuss the necessary modifications of the symmetries defined in supersymmetric gauged double field theory. Further, we construct supersymmetric completion at quadratic order in $α'$.

Towards Weakly Constrained Double Field Theory

We show that it is possible to construct a well-defined effective field theory incorporating string winding modes without using strong constraint in double field theory. We show that X-ray (Radon) transform on a torus is well-suited for describing weakly constrained double fields, and any weakly constrained fields are represented as a sum of strongly constrained fields. Using inverse X- ray transform we define a novel binary operation which is compatible with the level matching constraint. Based on this formalism, we construct a consistent gauge transform and gauge invariant action without using strong constraint. We then discuss the relation of our result to the closed string field theory. Our construction suggests that there exists an effective field theory description for massless sector of closed string field theory on a torus in an associative truncation.

New gaugings and non-geometry

We discuss the possible realisation in string/M theory of the recently discovered family of four-dimensional maximal $SO(8)$ gauged supergravities, and of an analogous family of seven-dimensional half-maximal $SO(4)$ gauged supergravities. We first prove a no-go theorem that neither class of gaugings can be realised via a compactification that is locally described by ten- or eleven-dimensional supergravity. In the language of Double Field Theory and its M theory analogue, this implies that the section condition must be violated. Introducing the minimal number of additional coordinates possible, we then show that the standard $S^3$ and $S^7$ compactifications of ten- and eleven-dimensional supergravity admit a new class of section-violating generalised frames with a generalised Lie derivative algebra that reproduces the embedding tensor of the $SO(4)$ and $SO(8)$ gaugings respectively. The physical meaning, if any, of these constructions is unclear. They highlight a number of the issues that arise when attempting to apply the formalism of Double Field Theory to non-toroidal backgrounds. Using a naive brane charge quantisation to determine the periodicities of the additional coordinates restricts the $SO(4)$ gaugings to an infinite discrete set and excludes all the $SO(8)$ gaugings other than the standard one.

Supersymmetry for Gauged Double Field Theory and Generalised Scherk-Schwarz Reductions

Previous constructions of supersymmetry for double field theory have relied on the so called strong constraint. In this paper, the strong constraint is relaxed and the theory is shown to possess supersymmetry once the generalised Scherk-Schwarz reduction is imposed. The equivalence between the generalised Scherk-Schwarz reduced theory and the gauged double field theory is then examined in detail for the supersymmetric theory. As a byproduct we write the generalised Killing spinor equations for the supersymmetric double field theory.

Spheres, generalised parallelisability and consistent truncations

We show that generalised geometry gives a unified description of maximally supersymmetric consistent truncations of ten- and eleven-dimensional supergravity. In all cases the reduction manifold admits a "generalised parallelisation" with a frame algebra with constant coefficients. The consistent truncation then arises as a generalised version of a conventional Scherk-Schwarz reduction with the frame algebra encoding the embedding tensor of the reduced theory. The key new result is that all round-sphere $S^d$ geometries admit such generalised parallelisations with an $SO(d+1)$ frame algebra. Thus we show that the remarkable consistent truncations on $S^3$, $S^4$, $S^5$ and $S^7$ are in fact simply generalised Scherk-Schwarz reductions. This description leads directly to the standard non-linear scalar-field ansatze and as an application we give the full scalar-field ansatz for the type IIB truncation on $S^5$.

Covariant action for a string in doubled yet gauged spacetime

The section condition in double field theory has been shown to imply that a physical point should be one-to-one identified with a gauge orbit in the doubled coordinate space. Here we show the converse is also true, and continue to explore the idea of `spacetime being doubled yet gauged'. Introducing an appropriate gauge connection, we construct a string action, with an arbitrary generalized metric, which is completely covariant with respect to the coordinate gauge symmetry, generalized diffeomorphisms, world-sheet diffeomorphisms, world-sheet Weyl symmetry and O(D,D) T-duality. A topological term previously proposed in the literature naturally arises and a self-duality condition follows from the equations of motion. Further, the action may couple to a T-dual background where the Riemannian metric becomes everywhere singular.

Stringy Unification of Type IIA and IIB Supergravities under N=2 D=10 Supersymmetric Double Field Theory

To the full order in fermions, we construct D=10 type II supersymmetric double field theory. We spell the precise N=2 supersymmetry transformation rules as for 32 supercharges. The constructed action unifies type IIA and IIB supergravities in a manifestly covariant manner with respect to O(10,10) T-duality and a pair of local Lorentz groups, or Spin(1,9) \times Spin(9,1), besides the usual general covariance of supergravities or the generalized diffeomorphism. While the theory is unique, the solutions are twofold. Type IIA and IIB supergravities are identified as two different types of solutions rather than two different theories.

Supersymmetric Double Field Theory: Stringy Reformulation of Supergravity

We construct a supersymmetric extension of double field theory that realizes the ten-dimensional Majorana-Weyl local supersymmetry. In terms of a stringy differential geometry we proposed earlier, our action consists of five simple terms -- two bosonic plus three fermionic -- and manifests not only diffeomorphism and one-form gauge symmetry of B-field, but also O(10,10) T-duality as well as a direct product of two local Lorentz symmetries, SO(1,9) \times SO(9,1). A gauge fixing that identifies the double local Lorentz groups reduces our action to the minimal supergravity in ten dimensions.

Ramond-Ramond Cohomology and O(D,D) T-duality

In the name of supersymmetric double field theory, superstring effective actions can be reformulated into simple forms. They feature a pair of vielbeins corresponding to the same spacetime metric, and hence enjoy double local Lorentz symmetries. In a manifestly covariant manner --with regard to O(D,D) T-duality, diffeomorphism, B-field gauge symmetry and the pair of local Lorentz symmetries-- we incorporate R-R potentials into double field theory. We take them as a single object which is in a bi-fundamental spinorial representation of the double Lorentz groups. We identify cohomological structure relevant to the field strength. A priori, the R-R sector as well as all the fermions are O(D,D) singlet. Yet, gauge fixing the two vielbeins equal to each other modifies the O(D,D) transformation rule to call for a compensating local Lorentz rotation, such that the R-R potential may turn into an O(D,D) spinor and T-duality can flip the chirality exchanging type IIA and IIB supergravities.

Incorporation of fermions into double field theory

Based on the stringy differential geometry we proposed earlier, we incorporate fermions such as gravitino and dilatino into double field theory in a manifestly covariant manner with regard to O(D,D) T-duality, diffeomorphism, one-form gauge symmetry for B-field and a pair of local Lorentz symmetries. We note that there are two kinds of fermions in double field theory: O(D,D) singlet and non-singlet which may be identified, respectively as the common and the non-common fermionic sectors in type IIA and IIB supergravities. For each kind, we construct corresponding covariant Dirac operators. Further, we derive a simple criterion for an O(D,D) rotation to flip the chirality of the O(D,D) non-singlet chiral fermions, which implies the exchange of type IIA and IIB supergravities.

Vortices and 3 dimensional dualities

We study a supersymmetric partition function of topological vortices in 3d N=4,3 gauge theories on R^2 x S^1, and use it to explore Seiberg-like dualities with Fayet-Iliopoulos deformations. We provide a detailed support of these dualities and also clarify the roles of vortices. The N=4 partition function confirms the proposed Seiberg duality and suggests nontrivial extensions, presumably at novel IR fixed points with enhanced symmetries. The N=3 theories with nonzero Chern-Simons term also have non-topological vortices in the partially broken phases, which are essential for the Seiberg duality invariance of the spectrum. We use our partition function to confirm some properties of non-topological vortices via Seiberg duality in a simple case.

Stringy differential geometry, beyond Riemann

While the fundamental object in Riemannian geometry is a metric, closed string theories call for us to put a two-form gauge field and a scalar dilaton on an equal footing with the metric. Here we propose a novel differential geometry which treats the three objects in a unified manner, manifests not only diffeomorphism and one-form gauge symmetry but also O(D,D) T-duality, and enables us to rewrite the known low energy effective action of them as a single term. Further, we develop a corresponding vielbein formalism and gauge the internal symmetry which is given by a direct product of two local Lorentz groups, SO(1,D-1) times SO(1,D-1). We comment that the notion of cosmological constant naturally changes.

Double field formulation of Yang-Mills theory

Based on our previous work on the differential geometry for the closed string double field theory, we construct a Yang-Mills action which is covariant under O(D,D) T-duality rotation and invariant under three-types of gauge transformations: non-Abelian Yang-Mills, diffeomorphism and one-form gauge symmetries. In double field formulation, in a manifestly covariant manner our action couples a single O(D,D) vector potential to the closed string double field theory. In terms of undoubled component fields, it couples a usual Yang-Mills gauge field to an additional one-form field and also to the closed string background fields which consist of a dilaton, graviton and a two-form gauge field. Our resulting action resembles a twisted Yang-Mills action.

Differential geometry with a projection: Application to double field theory

In recent development of double field theory, as for the description of the massless sector of closed strings, the spacetime dimension is formally doubled, i.e. from D to D+D, and the T-duality is realized manifestly as a global O(D,D) rotation. In this paper, we conceive a differential geometry characterized by a O(D,D) symmetric projection, as the underlying mathematical structure of double field theory. We introduce a differential operator compatible with the projection, which, contracted with the projection, can be covariantized and may replace the ordinary derivatives in the generalized Lie derivative that generates the gauge symmetry of double field theory. We construct various gauge covariant tensors which include a scalar and a tensor carrying two O(D,D) vector indices.

Partonic description of a supersymmetric p-brane

We consider supersymmetric extensions of a recently proposed partonic description of a bosonic p-brane which reformulates the Nambu-Goto action as an interacting multi-particle action with Filippov-Lie algebra gauge symmetry. We construct a worldline supersymmetric action by postulating, among others, a p-form fermion. Demanding a local worldline supersymmetry rather than the full worldvolume supersymmetry, we circumvent a known no-go theorem against the construction of a Ramond-Neveu-Schwarz supersymmetric action for a p-brane of p>1. We also derive a spacetime supersymmetric Green-Schwarz extension from the preexisting kappa-symmetric action.

Three-algebra for supermembrane and two-algebra for superstring

While string or Yang-Mills theories are based on Lie algebra or two-algebra structure, recent studies indicate that M-theory may require a one higher, three-algebra structure. Here we construct a covariant action for a supermembrane in eleven dimensions, which is invariant under global supersymmetry, local fermionic symmetry and worldvolume diffeomorphism. Our action is classically on-shell equivalent to the celebrated Bergshoeff-Sezgin-Townsend action. However, the novelty is that we spell the action genuinely in terms of Nambu three-brackets: All the derivatives appear through Nambu brackets and hence it manifests the three-algebra structure. Further the double dimensional reduction of our action gives straightforwardly to a type IIA string action featuring two-algebra. Applying the same method, we also construct a covariant action for type IIB superstring, leading directly to the IKKT matrix model.

Topological Twisting of Multiple M2-brane Theory

Bagger-Lambert-Gustavsson theory with infinite dimensional gauge group has been suggested to describe M5-brane as a condensation of multiple M2-branes. Here we perform a topological twisting of the Bagger-Lambert-Gustavsson theory. The original SO(8) R-symmetry is broken to SO(3)XSO(5), where the former may be interpreted as a diagonal subgroup of the Euclidean M5-brane world-volume symmetry SO(6), while the latter is the isometry of the transverse five directions. Accordingly the resulting action contains an one-form and five scalars as for the bosonic dynamical fields. We further lift the action to a generic curved three manifold. In order to make sure the genuine topological invariance, we construct an off-shell formalism such that the scalar supersymmetry transformations are nilpotent strictly off-shell and independent of the metric of the three manifold. The one loop partition function around a trivial background yields the Ray-Singer torsion. The BPS equation involves an M2-brane charge density given by a Nambu-Goto action defined in an internal three-manifold.
