Density fluctuations and compressibility matrix for population or mass imbalanced Fermi-Fermi mixtures

We describe the relation between the isothermal atomic compressibility and density fluctuations in mixtures of two-component fermions with population or mass imbalance. We derive a generalized version of the fluctuation-dissipation theorem which is valid for both balanced and imbalanced Fermi-Fermi mixtures. Furthermore, we show that the compressibility, its critical exponents, and phase boundaries can be extracted via an analysis of the density fluctuations as a function of population imbalance, interaction parameter or temperature. Lastly, we demonstrate that in the presence of trapping potentials, the local compressibility and local density-density correlations can be extracted via a generalized fluctuation-dissipation theorem valid within the local density approximation.

Topological phase transitions in ultra-cold Fermi superfluids: the evolution from BCS to BEC under artificial spin-orbit fields

We discuss topological phase transitions in ultra-cold Fermi superfluids induced by interactions and artificial spin orbit fields. We construct the phase diagram for population imbalanced systems at zero and finite temperatures, and analyze spectroscopic and thermodynamic properties to characterize various phase transitions. For balanced systems, the evolution from BCS to BEC superfluids in the presence of spin-orbit effects is only a crossover as the system remains fully gapped, even though a triplet component of the order parameter emerges. However, for imbalanced populations, spin-orbit fields induce a triplet component in the order parameter that produces nodes in the quasiparticle excitation spectrum leading to bulk topological phase transitions of the Lifshitz type. Additionally a fully gapped phase exists, where a crossover from indirect to direct gap occurs, but a topological transition to a gapped phase possessing Majorana fermions edge states does not occur.

Compressibility and spin susceptibility in the evolution from BCS to BEC superfluids

Furthermore, we show that critical exponents for the compressibility can be extracted via an analysis of the density fluctuations when phase transitions occur as a function of population imbalance or interaction parameter. In addition, we demonstrate that in the presence of trapping potentials, the local compressibility, local spin-susceptibility and local density-density correlations can be extracted from experimental data via a generalized local fluctuation-dissipation theorem which is valid beyond the local density approximation. Lastly, we use the local density approximation to calculate theoretically the local compressibility, local spin-susceptibility and local density-density fluctuations to compare with experimental results as they become available.

Magnetic Properties of the Superconducting State of Iron-Based Superconductors

We show that features of the dynamical spin susceptibility can unambiguously distinguish between different pairing symmetries of the superconducting state in iron-based superconductors. A magnetic resonance is a unique feature for the extended $s_{x^2y^2}$-wave $\cos k_x\cos k_y$ pairing symmetry. It is present in the pure superconducting (SC) state, but weakens in the mixed SC and magnetically ordered state. We calculate the the RPA correction to the NMR spin relaxation rate $1/T_1$ and the Knight shift in the above states and show a good agreement with experimental results. Moreover, we argue that the energy dispersion of the magnetic resonance along c axis observed in neutron scattering experiments is also an indirect evidence supporting the $s_{x^2y^2}$ pairing symmetry.

Quasiparticle Scattering Interference in Superconducting Iron-pnictides

Using both two orbital and five orbital models, we investigate the quasiparticle interference (QPI) patterns in the superconducting (SC) state of iron-based superconductors. We compare the results for nonmagnetic and magnetic impurities in sign-changed s-wave $\cos(k_x)\cdot\cos(k_y)$ and sign-unchanged $|\cos(k_x)\cdot\cos(k_y)|$ SC states. While the patterns strongly depend on the chosen band structures, the sensitivity of peaks around $(\pmπ,0)$ and $(0,\pmπ)$ wavevectors on magnetic or non-magnetic impurity, and sign change or sign unchanged SC orders is common in two models. Our results strongly suggest that QPI may provide direct information of band structures and evidence of the pairing symmetry in the SC states.

Complementary Pair Density Wave and d-wave Checkerboard Order in High Temperature Superconductors

The competing orders in the particle-particle (P-P) channel and the particle-hole (P-H) channel have been proposed separately to explain the pseudogap physics in cuprates. By solving the Bogoliubov-deGennes equation self-consistently, we show that there is a general complementary connection between the d-wave checkerboard order (DWCB) in the particle-hole (P-H) channel and the pair density wave order (PDW) in the particle-particle (P-P) channel. A small pair density localization generates DWCB and PDW orders simultaneously. The result suggests that suppressing superconductivity locally or globally through phase fluctuation should induce both orders in underdoped cuprates. The presence of both DWCB and PDW orders with $4a \times 4a$ periodicity can explain the checkerboard modulation observed in FT-STS from STM and the puzzling dichotomy between the nodal and antinodal regions as well as the characteristic features such as non-dispersive Fermi arc in the pseudogap state.

Pairing Symmetry in a Two-Orbital Exchange Coupling Model of Oxypnictides

We study the pairing symmetry of a two orbital $J_1-J_2$ model for FeAs layers in oxypnictides. We vary the doping and the value of $J_1$ and $J_2$ to compare all possible pairing symmetries in a mean-field calculation. We show that the mixture of an intra-orbital unconventional $s_{x^2y^2}\sim \cos(k_x)\cos(k_y)$ pairing symmetry and a $d_{x^2-y^2}\sim \cos(k_x)-\cos(k_y)$ pairing symmetry is favored in a large part of $J_1-J_2$ phase diagram. A pure $ s_{x^2y^2}$ pairing state is favored for $J_2>>J_1$. The signs of the $d_{x^2-y^2}$ order parameters in two different orbitals are opposite. While a small $d_{xy}\sim \sin(k_x)\sin(k_y)$ inter-orbital pairing order coexists in the above phases, the intra-orbital $d_{xy}$ pairing symmetry is not favored even for large values of $J_2$.

d-Wave Checkerboard Order in Cuprates

We show that the d-wave ordering in particle-hole channels, dubbed d-wave checkerboard order, possesses important physics that can sufficiently explain the scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) results in cuprates. A weak d-wave checkerboard order can effectively suppress the coherence peak in the single-particle spectrum while leaving the spectrum along the nodal direction almost unaffected. Simultaneously, it generates a Fermi arc with little dispersion around the nodal points at finite temperature that is consistent with the results of angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) experiments in the pseudogap phase. We also show that there is a general complementary connection between the d-wave checkerboard order and the pair-density-wave order. Suppressing superconductivity locally or globally through phase fluctuations should induce both orders in underdoped cuprates and explain the nodal-antinodal dichotomy observed in ARPES and STM experiments.

Competing order and the asymmetric tunneling spectrum in high temperature cuprate superconductors

We show that the asymmetric tunneling spectrum observed in the cuprate superconductors stems from the existence of a competing order. The competition between the competing order and superconductivity can create a charge depletion region near the surface. The asymmetric response of the depletion region as the function of the external voltage causes the asymmetric tunneling spectrum. The effect is very general in a system which is near the phase boundary of two competing states favoring different carrier densities. The asymmetry which has recently been observed in the point-contact spectroscopy of the heavy fermion superconductor CeCoIn5 is another example of this effect.
