Non-Invertible Symmetries Mixing with Witt Non-Trivial Quantum Cellular Automata

Self-dualities and the stacking of symmetry-protected topological (SPT) phases are basic operations on quantum many-body systems. For a $\mathbb{Z}_p$ one-form symmetry in 3+1d these correspond to the Kramers-Wannier-Wegner duality $S$, which is the gauging operation underlying non-invertible duality symmetries, and the stacking of a 1-form symmetry SPT $T$. In the continuum, they form a central extension of $PSL(2,\mathbb{Z}_4)$ for $p=2$, and of $SL(2,\mathbb{Z}_p)$ for odd primes $p$, whose central elements are invertible theories with purely gravitational response. These central extensions are governed by a twisted, graded generalization of the Witt group of abelian anyon theories, which we determine. For $p=2$ the resulting group is the single-qubit Clifford group, with duality and entangler acting as the Hadamard and phase gates. We realize this entire structure microscopically as quantum cellular automata (QCA) acting on a certain local operator algebra associated with a spin lattice Hilbert space on a cubic lattice. Specifically, our local operator algebra is built by starting with all local operators commuting with a $\mathbb{Z}_p$ 1-form symmetry, and taking the quotient by all the (local) 1-form symmetry generators. The central elements can always be extended to the full tensor product algebra with a uniquely defined QCA class. For $p=2$ they are generated by the non-trivial semion QCA, and for odd prime $p$ they are generated by the non-trivial $\mathbb{Z}_p$ Clifford QCA. Consequently the lattice fusion rules reproduce the continuum ones only up to these QCAs and lattice translations, giving rise to fusion rules refined by QCAs.

Non-Invertible Symmetries on Tensor-Product Hilbert Spaces and Quantum Cellular Automata

We investigate realizations of (1+1)-dimensional fusion category symmetries on tensor-product Hilbert spaces, allowing for mixing with quantum cellular automata (QCAs). It was argued recently that any such realizable symmetry must be weakly integral. We develop a systematic analysis of QCA-refined realizations of fusion categories and prove two statements. First, we show that, under certain physical assumptions on defects, any QCA-refined realization has QCA and symmetry-operator indices determined by the categorical data, up to the freedom of redefining the symmetry operators. Second, we construct a lattice model that provides a QCA-refined realization for any weakly integral fusion category symmetry on a tensor product Hilbert space. We also compute indices of the QCAs in our lattice model and show agreement with the first result. As an application of the general construction, we give an explicit QCA-refined realization of general Tambara-Yamagami categorical symmetries.

Remarks on non-invertible symmetries on a tensor product Hilbert space in 1+1 dimensions

We propose an index of non-invertible symmetry operators in 1+1 dimensions and discuss its relation to the realizability of non-invertible symmetries on the tensor product of finite dimensional on-site Hilbert spaces on the lattice. Our index generalizes the Gross-Nesme-Vogts-Werner index of invertible symmetry operators represented by quantum cellular automata (QCAs). Assuming that all fusion channels of symmetry operators have the same index, we show that the fusion rules of finitely many symmetry operators on a tensor product Hilbert space can agree, up to QCAs, only with those of weakly integral fusion categories. We also discuss an attempt to establish an index theory for non-invertible symmetries within the framework of tensor networks. To this end, we first propose a general class of matrix product operators (MPOs) that describe non-invertible symmetries on a tensor product Hilbert space. These MPOs, which we refer to as topological injective MPOs, include all invertible symmetries, non-anomalous fusion category symmetries, and the Kramers-Wannier symmetries for finite abelian groups. For topological injective MPOs, we construct the defect Hilbert spaces and the corresponding sequential quantum circuit representations. We also show that all fusion channels of topological injective MPOs have the same index if there exist fusion and splitting tensors that satisfy appropriate conditions. The existence of such fusion and splitting tensors has not been proven in general, although we construct them explicitly for all examples of topological injective MPOs listed above.

Generalized cluster states in 2+1d: non-invertible symmetries, interfaces, and parameterized families

We construct 2+1-dimensional lattice models of symmetry-protected topological (SPT) phases with non-invertible symmetries and investigate their properties using tensor networks. These models, which we refer to as generalized cluster models, are constructed by gauging a subgroup symmetry $H \subset G$ in models with a finite group 0-form symmetry $G$. By construction, these models have a non-invertible symmetry described by the group-theoretical fusion 2-category $\mathcal{C}(G; H)$. After identifying the tensor network representations of the symmetry operators, we study the symmetry acting on the interface between two generalized cluster states. In particular, we will see that the symmetry at the interface is described by a multifusion category known as the strip 2-algebra. By studying possible interface modes allowed by this symmetry, we show that the interface between generalized cluster states in different SPT phases must be degenerate. This result generalizes the ordinary bulk-boundary correspondence. Furthermore, we construct parameterized families of generalized cluster states and study the topological charge pumping phenomena, known as the generalized Thouless pump. We exemplify our construction with several concrete cases, and compare them with known phases, such as SPT phases with $2\mathrm{Rep}((\mathbb{Z}_{2}^{[1]}\times\mathbb{Z}_{2}^{[1]})\rtimes\mathbb{Z}_{2}^{[0]})$ symmetry.

Parameterized families of 2+1d $G$-cluster states

We construct a $G$-cluster Hamiltonian in 2+1 dimensions and analyze its properties. This model exhibits a $G\times2\mathrm{Rep}(G)$ symmetry, where the $2\mathrm{Rep}(G)$ sector realizes a non-invertible symmetry obtained by condensing appropriate algebra objects in $\mathrm{Rep}(G)$. Using the symmetry interpolation method, we construct $S^1$- and $S^2$-parameterized families of short-range-entangled (SRE) states by interpolating an either invertible $0$-form or $1$-form symmetry contained in $G\times2\mathrm{Rep}(G)$. Applying an adiabatic evolution argument to this family, we analyze the pumped interface mode generated by this adiabatic process. We then explicitly construct the symmetry operator acting on the interface and show that the interface mode carries a nontrivial charge under this symmetry, thereby demonstrating the nontriviality of the parameterized family.

(2+1)d Lattice Models and Tensor Networks for Gapped Phases with Categorical Symmetry

Gapped phases in 2+1 dimensional quantum field theories with fusion 2-categorical symmetries were recently classified and characterized using the Symmetry Topological Field Theory (SymTFT) approach arXiv:2408.05266, arXiv:2502.20440. In this paper, we provide a systematic lattice model construction for all such gapped phases. Specifically, we consider "all-boson type" fusion 2-category symmetries, all of which are obtainable from 0-form symmetry groups $G$ (possibly with an 't Hooft anomaly) via generalized gauging--that is, by stacking with an $H$-symmetric TFT and gauging a subgroup $H$. The continuum classification directly informs the lattice data, such as the generalized gauging that determines the symmetry category, and the data that specifies the gapped phase. We construct commuting projector Hamiltonians and ground states applicable to any non-chiral gapped phase with such symmetries. We also describe the ground states in terms of tensor networks. In light of the length of the paper, we include a self-contained summary section presenting the main results and examples.

Gapless Phases in (2+1)d with Non-Invertible Symmetries

The study of gapless phases with categorical (or so-called non-invertible) symmetries is a formidable task, in particular in higher than two space-time dimensions. In this paper we build on previous works arXiv:2408.05266 and arXiv:2502.20440 on gapped phases in (2+1)d and provide a systematic framework to study phase transitions with categorical symmetries. The Symmetry Topological Field Theory (SymTFT) is, as often in these matters, the central tool. Applied to gapless theories, we need to consider the extension of the SymTFT to interfaces between topological orders, so-called ``club sandwiches", which realize generalizations of so-called Kennedy-Tasaki (KT) transformations. This requires an input phase transition for a smaller symmetry, such as the Ising transition for $\mathbb{Z}_2$, and the SymTFT constructs a transformation to a gapless phase with a larger categorical symmetry. We carry this out for categorical symmetries whose SymTFT is a (3+1)d Dijkgraaf-Witten (DW) theory for a finite group $G$ with twist -- so-called all bosonic fusion 2-categories. We classify such interfaces using a physically motivated picture of generalized gauging, as well as with a complementary analysis using (bi-)module 2-categories.This is exemplified in numerous abelian and non-abelian DW theories, giving rise to interesting gapless phases such as intrinsically gapless symmetry protected phases (igSPTs) and spontaneous symmetry breaking phases (igSSBs) from abelian, $S_3$, and $D_8$ DW theories.

1+1d SPT phases with fusion category symmetry: interface modes and non-abelian Thouless pump

We consider symmetry protected topological (SPT) phases with finite non-invertible symmetry $\mathcal{C}$ in 1+1d. In particular, we investigate interfaces and parameterized families of them within the framework of matrix product states. After revealing how to extract the $\mathcal{C}$-SPT invariant, we identify the algebraic structure of symmetry operators acting on the interface of two $\mathcal{C}$-SPT phases. By studying the representation theory of this algebra, we show that there must be a degenerate interface mode between different $\mathcal{C}$-SPT phases. This result generalizes the bulk-boundary correspondence for ordinary SPT phases. We then propose the classification of one-parameter families of $\mathcal{C}$-SPT states based on the explicit construction of invariants of such families. Our invariant is identified with a non-abelian generalization of the Thouless charge pump, which is the pump of a local excitation within a $\mathcal{C}$-SPT phase. Finally, by generalizing the results for one-parameter families of SPT phases, we conjecture the classification of general parameterized families of general gapped phases with finite non-invertible symmetries in both 1+1d and higher dimensions.

Chiral Edge States Emerging on Anyon-Net

We propose a symmetry-based approach to constructing lattice models for chiral topological phases, focusing on non-Abelian anyons. Using a 2+1D version of anyon chains and modular tensor categories(MTCs), we ensure exact MTC symmetry at the microscopic level. Numerical simulations using tensor networks demonstrate chiral edge modes for topological phases with Ising and Fibonacci anyons. Our method contrasts with conventional solvability approaches, providing a new theoretical avenue to explore strongly coupled 2+1D systems, revealing chiral edge states in non-Abelian anyonic systems.

Fermionic Non-Invertible Symmetries in (1+1)d: Gapped and Gapless Phases, Transitions, and Symmetry TFTs

We study fermionic non-invertible symmetries in (1+1)d, which are generalized global symmetries that mix fermion parity symmetry with other invertible and non-invertible internal symmetries. Such symmetries are described by fermionic fusion supercategories, which are fusion $\pi$-supercategories with a choice of fermion parity. The aim of this paper is to flesh out the categorical Landau paradigm for fermionic symmetries. We use the formalism of Symmetry Topological Field Theory (SymTFT) to study possible gapped and gapless phases for such symmetries, along with possible deformations between these phases, which are organized into a Hasse phase diagram. The phases can be characterized in terms of sets of condensed, confined and deconfined generalized symmetry charges, reminiscent of notions familiar from superconductivity. Many of the gapless phases also serve as phase transitions between gapped phases. The associated fermionic conformal field theories (CFTs) can be obtained by performing generalized fermionic Kennedy-Tasaki (KT) transformations on bosonic CFTs describing simpler transitions. The fermionic non-invertible symmetries along with their charges and phases discussed here can be obtained from those of bosonic non-invertible symmetries via fermionization or Jordan-Wigner transformation, which is discussed in detail.

2+1D symmetry-topological-order from local symmetric operators in 1+1D

A generalized symmetry (defined by the algebra of local symmetric operators) can go beyond group or higher group description. A theory of generalized symmetry (up to holo-equivalence) was developed in terms of symmetry-TO -- a bosonic topological order (TO) with gappable boundary in one higher dimension. We propose a general method to compute the 2+1D symmetry-TO from the local symmetric operators in 1+1D systems. Our theory is based on the commutant patch operators, which are extended operators constructed as products and sums of local symmetric operators. A commutant patch operator commutes with all local symmetric operators away from its boundary. We argue that topological invariants associated with anyon diagrams in 2+1D can be computed as contracted products of commutant patch operators in 1+1D. In particular, we give concrete formulae for several topological invariants in terms of commutant patch operators. Topological invariants computed from patch operators include those beyond modular data, such as the link invariants associated with the Borromean rings and the Whitehead link. These results suggest that the algebra of commutant patch operators is described by 2+1D symmetry-TO. Based on our analysis, we also argue briefly that the commutant patch operators would serve as order parameters for gapped phases with finite symmetries.

Fusion Surface Models: 2+1d Lattice Models from Fusion 2-Categories

We construct (2+1)-dimensional lattice systems, which we call fusion surface models. These models have finite non-invertible symmetries described by general fusion 2-categories. Our method can be applied to build microscopic models with, for example, anomalous or non-anomalous one-form symmetries, 2-group symmetries, or non-invertible one-form symmetries that capture non-abelian anyon statistics. The construction of these models generalizes the construction of the 1+1d anyon chains formalized by Aasen, Fendley, and Mong. Along with the fusion surface models, we also obtain the corresponding three-dimensional classical statistical models, which are 3d analogues of the 2d Aasen-Fendley-Mong height models. In the construction, the "symmetry TFTs" for fusion 2-category symmetries play an important role.

Fermionization of fusion category symmetries in 1+1 dimensions

We discuss the fermionization of fusion category symmetries in two-dimensional topological quantum field theories (TQFTs). When the symmetry of a bosonic TQFT is described by the representation category $\mathrm{Rep}(H)$ of a semisimple weak Hopf algebra $H$, the fermionized TQFT has a superfusion category symmetry $\mathrm{SRep}(\mathcal{H}^u)$, which is the supercategory of super representations of a weak Hopf superalgebra $\mathcal{H}^u$. The weak Hopf superalgebra $\mathcal{H}^u$ depends not only on $H$ but also on a choice of a non-anomalous $\mathbb{Z}_2$ subgroup of $\mathrm{Rep}(H)$ that is used for the fermionization. We derive a general formula for $\mathcal{H}^u$ by explicitly constructing fermionic TQFTs with $\mathrm{SRep}(\mathcal{H}^u)$ symmetry. We also construct lattice Hamiltonians of fermionic gapped phases when the symmetry is non-anomalous. As concrete examples, we compute the fermionization of finite group symmetries, the symmetries of finite gauge theories, and duality symmetries. We find that the fermionization of duality symmetries depends crucially on $F$-symbols of the original fusion categories. The computation of the above concrete examples suggests that our fermionization formula of fusion category symmetries can also be applied to non-topological QFTs.

On lattice models of gapped phases with fusion category symmetries

We construct topological quantum field theories (TQFTs) and commuting projector Hamiltonians for any 1+1d gapped phases with non-anomalous fusion category symmetries, i.e. finite symmetries that admit SPT phases. The construction is based on two-dimensional state sum TQFT whose input datum is an $H$-simple left $H$-comodule algebra, where $H$ is a finite dimensional semisimple Hopf algebra. We show that the actions of fusion category symmetries $\mathcal{C}$ on the boundary conditions of these state sum TQFTs are represented by module categories over $\mathcal{C}$. This agrees with the classification of gapped phases with symmetry $\mathcal{C}$. We also find that the commuting projector Hamiltonians for these state sum TQFTs have fusion category symmetries at the level of the lattice models and hence provide lattice realizations of gapped phases with fusion category symmetries. As an application, we discuss the edge modes of SPT phases based on these commuting projector Hamiltonians. Finally, we mention that we can extend the construction of topological field theories to the case of anomalous fusion category symmetries by replacing a semisimple Hopf algebra with a semisimple pseudo-unitary connected weak Hopf algebra.

Topological field theories and symmetry protected topological phases with fusion category symmetries

Fusion category symmetries are finite symmetries in 1+1 dimensions described by unitary fusion categories. We classify 1+1d time-reversal invariant bosonic symmetry protected topological (SPT) phases with fusion category symmetry by using topological field theories. We first formulate two-dimensional unoriented topological field theories whose symmetry splits into time-reversal symmetry and fusion category symmetry. We then solve them to show that SPT phases are classified by equivalence classes of quintuples $(Z, M, i, s, ϕ)$ where $(Z, M, i)$ is a fiber functor, $s$ is a sign, and $ϕ$ is the action of orientation-reversing symmetry that is compatible with the fiber functor $(Z, M, i)$. We apply this classification to SPT phases with Kramers-Wannier-like self-duality.

Non-local Order Parameters and Quantum Entanglement for Fermionic Topological Field Theories

We study quantized non-local order parameters, constructed by using partial time-reversal and partial reflection, for fermionic topological phases of matter in one spatial dimension protected by an orientation reversing symmetry, using topological quantum field theories (TQFTs). By formulating the order parameters in the Hilbert space of state sum TQFT, we establish the connection between the quantized non-local order parameters and the underlying field theory, clarifying the nature of the order parameters as topological invariants. We also formulate several entanglement measures including the entanglement negativity on state sum spin TQFT, and describe the exact correspondence of the entanglement measures to path integrals on a closed surface equipped with a specific spin structure.
