The Reidemeister spectra of low dimensional crystallographic groups

In this paper we study the number of twisted conjugacy classes (the Reidemeister number) for automorphisms of crystallographic groups. We present two main algorithms for crystallographic groups whose holonomy group has finite normaliser in $\operatorname{GL}_n(\mathbb{Z})$. The first algorithm calculates whether a group has the $R_\infty$-property; the second calculates the Reidemeister spectrum. We apply these algorithms to crystallographic groups up to dimension $6$.

Algorithms for twisted conjugacy classes of polycyclic-by-finite groups

We construct two practical algorithms for twisted conjugacy classes of polycyclic-by-finite groups. The first algorithm determines whether two elements of a group are twisted conjugate for two given endomorphisms, under the condition that the Reidemeister coincidence number of these endomorphisms is finite. The second algorithm determines representatives of the Reidemeister coincidence classes of two endomorphisms if their Reidemeister coincidence number is finite, or returns "fail" if the Reidemeister coincidence number is infinite.

Reidemeister spectra for solvmanifolds in low dimensions

The Reidemeister number of an endomorphism of a group is the number of twisted conjugacy classes determined by that endomorphism. The collection of all Reidemeister numbers of all automorphisms of a group $G$ is called the Reidemeister spectrum of $G$. In this paper, we determine the Reidemeister spectra of all fundamental groups of solvmanifolds up to Hirsch length 4.

Fixed points of diffeomorphisms on nilmanifolds with a free nilpotent fundamental group

Let $M$ be a nilmanifold with a fundamental group which is free $2$-step nilpotent on at least 4 generators. We will show that for any nonnegative integer $n$ there exists a self-diffeomorphism $h_n$ of $M$ such that $h_n$ has exactly $n$ fixed points and any self-map $f$ of $M$ which is homotopic to $h_n$ has at least $n$ fixed points. We will also shed some light on the situation for less generators and also for higher nilpotency classes.

The $R_\infty$-property for right-angled Artin groups

Given a group $G$ and an automorphism $φ$ of $G$, two elements $x, y \in G$ are said to be $φ$-conjugate if $x = g y φ(g)^{-1}$ for some $g \in G$. The number of equivalence classes is the Reidemeister number $R(φ)$ of $φ$, and if $R(φ) = \infty$ for all automorphisms of $G$, then $G$ is said to have the $R_\infty$-property. A finite simple graph $Γ$ gives rise to the right-angled Artin group $A_Γ$, which has as generators the vertices of $Γ$ and as relations $vw = wv$ if and only if $v$ and $w$ are joined by an edge in $Γ$. We conjecture that all non-abelian right-angled Artin groups have the $R_\infty$-property and prove this conjecture for several subclasses of right-angled Artin groups.

The R$_\infty$ property for pure Artin braid groups

In this paper we prove that all pure Artin braid groups $P_n$ ($n\geq 3$) have the $R_\infty$ property. In order to obtain this result, we analyse the naturally induced morphism $\operatorname{\text{Aut}}(P_n) \to \operatorname{\text{Aut}}(Γ_2 (P_n)/Γ_3(P_n))$ which turns out to factor through a representation $ρ\colon S_{n+1} \to \operatorname{\text{Aut}}(Γ_2 (P_n)/Γ_3(P_n))$. We can then use representation theory of the symmetric groups to show that any automorphism $α$ of $P_n$ acts on the free abelian group $Γ_2 (P_n)/Γ_3(P_n)$ via a matrix with an eigenvalue equal to 1. This allows us to conclude that the Reidemeister number $R(α)$ of $α$ is $\infty$.

Almost inner derivations of 2-step nilpotent Lie algebras of genus 2

We study almost inner derivations of $2$-step nilpotent Lie algebras of genus $2$, i.e., having a $2$-dimensional commutator ideal, using matrix pencils. In particular we determine all almost inner derivations of such algebras in terms of minimal indices and elementary divisors over an arbitrary algebraically closed field of characteristic not $2$ and over the real numbers.

Lifting classes for the fixed point theory of $n$-valued maps

The theory of lifting classes and the Reidemeister number of single-valued maps of a finite polyhedron $X$ is extended to $n$-valued maps by replacing liftings to universal covering spaces by liftings with codomain an orbit configuration space, a structure recently introduced by Xicoténcatl. The liftings of an $n$-valued map $f$ split into self-maps of the universal covering space of $X$ that we call lift-factors. An equivalence relation is defined on the lift-factors of $f$ and the number of equivalence classes is the Reidemeister number of $f$. The fixed point classes of $f$ are the projections of the fixed point sets of the lift-factors and are the same as those of Schirmer. An equivalence relation is defined on the fundamental group of $X$ such that the number of equivalence classes equals the Reidemeister number. We prove that if $X$ is a manifold of dimension at least three, then algebraically the orbit configuration space approach is the same as one utilizing the universal covering space. The Jiang subgroup is extended to $n$-valued maps as a subgroup of the group of covering transformations of the orbit configuration space and used to find conditions under which the Nielsen number of an $n$-valued map equals its Reidemeister number. If an $n$-valued map splits into $n$ single-valued maps, then its $n$-valued Reidemeister number is the sum of their Reidemeister numbers.

Almost inner derivations of Lie algebras II

We continue the algebraic study of almost inner derivations of Lie algebras over a field of characteristic zero and determine these derivations for free nilpotent Lie algebras, for almost abelian Lie algebras, for Lie algebras whose solvable radical is abelian and for several classes of filiform nilpotent Lie algebras. We find a family of $n$-dimensional characteristically nilpotent filiform Lie algebras $\mathfrak{f}_n$, for all $n\ge 13$, all of whose derivations are almost inner. Finally we compare the almost inner derivations of Lie algebras considered over two different fields $K\supseteq k$ for a finite-dimensional field extension.

Almost inner derivations of Lie algebras

We study almost inner derivations of Lie algebras, which were introduced by Gordon and Wilson in their work on isospectral deformations of compact solvmanifolds. We compute all almost inner derivations for low-dimensional Lie algebras, and introduce the concept of fixed basis vectors for proving that all almost inner derivations are inner for $2$-step nilpotent Lie algebras determined by graphs, free $2$ and $3$-step nilpotent Lie algebras, free metabelian nilpotent Lie algebras on two generators, almost abelian Lie algebras and triangular Lie algebras. On the other hand we also exhibit families of nilpotent Lie algebras having an arbitrary large space of non-inner almost inner derivations.

A Users' Guide to Infra-nilmanifolds and Almost-Bieberbach groups

The aim of this text is to provide a clear description of the theory of Infra-nilmanifolds and their fundamental groups, the almost-Bieberbach groups. For most of the proofs of the results, we refer to the literature. Nevertheless, at certain places we offer a somewhat different and new approach and in these cases we provide full proofs. We have tried to keep the prerequisites as minimal as possible. We also provide completely worked out examples, with explicit computations.

Post-Lie algebra structures on pairs of Lie algebras

We study post-Lie algebra structures on pairs of Lie algebras $(\mathfrak{g},\mathfrak{n})$, motivated by nil-affine actions of Lie groups. We prove existence results for such structures depending on the interplay of the algebraic structures of $\mathfrak{g}$ and $\mathfrak{n}$. We consider the classes of simple, semisimple, reductive, perfect, solvable, nilpotent, abelian and unimodular Lie algebras. Furthermore we consider commutative post-Lie algebra structures on perfect Lie algebras. Using Lie algebra cohomology we prove that such structures are trivial in several cases. We classify commutative structures on low-dimensional Lie algebras, and study the case of nilpotent Lie algebras.

Crystallographic actions on contractible algebraic manifolds

We study properly discontinuous and cocompact actions of a discrete subgroup $Γ$ of an algebraic group $G$ on a contractible algebraic manifold $X$. We suppose that this action comes from an algebraic action of $G$ on $X$ such that a maximal reductive subgroup of $G$ fixes a point. When the real rank of any simple subgroup of $G$ is at most one or the dimension of $X$ is at most three, we show that $Γ$ is virtually polycyclic. When $Γ$ is virtually polycyclic, we show that $Γ$ is virtually polycyclic. When $Γ$ is virtually polycyclic, we show that the action reduces to a NIL-affine crystallographic action. As applications, we prove that the generalized Auslander conjecture for NIL-affine actions holds up to dimension six and give a new proof of the fact that every virtually polycyclic group admits a NIL-affine crystallographic action.

The $R_\infty$ property for nilpotent quotients of surface groups

It is well known that when $G$ is the fundamental group of a closed surface of negative Euler characteristic, it has the $R_{\infty}$ property. In this work we compute the least integer $c$, {\it called the $R_{\infty}$-nilpotency degree of $G$}, such that the group $G/ γ_{c+1}(G)$ has the $R_{\infty}$ property, where $γ_r(G)$ is the $r$-th term of the lower central series of $G$. We show that $c=4$ for $G$ the fundamental group of any orientable closed surface $S_g$ of genus $g>1$. For the fundamental group of the non-orientable surface $N_g$ (the connected sum of $g$ projective planes) this number is $2(g-1)$ (when $g>2$). A similar concept is introduced using the derived series $G^{(r)}$ of a group $G$. Namely {\it the $R_{\infty}$-solvability degree of $G$}, which is the least integer $c$ such that the group $G/G^{(c)}$ has the $R_{\infty}$ property. We show that the fundamental group of an orientable closed surface $S_g$ has $R_{\infty}$-solvability degree $2$.

A note on homotopy minimal periods for hyperbolic maps on infra-nilmanifolds

In this paper, we show that for every non-nilpotent hyperbolic map $f$ on an infra-nilmanifold, the $\textrm{HPer}(f)$ is cofinite in $\mathbb{N}$. This generalizes a similar result for expanding maps. Moreover, we prove that for every nilpotent map $f$ on an infra-nilmanifold, $\textrm{HPer}(f)=\{1\}$.

Expanding maps and non-trivial self-covers on infra-nilmanifolds

Every expanding map on a closed manifold is topologically conjugate to an expanding map on an infra-nilmanifold, but not every infra-nilmanifold admits an expanding map. In this article we give a complete algebraic characterization of the infra-nilmanifolds admitting an expanding map. We show that, just as in the case of Anosov diffeomorphisms, the existence of an expanding map depends only on the rational holonomy representation of the infra-nilmanifold. A similar characterization is also given for the infra-nilmanifolds with a non-trivial self-cover, which corresponds to determining which almost-Bieberbach groups are co-Hopfian. These results provide many new examples of infra-nilmanifolds without non-trivial self-covers or expanding maps.

A formula for the second cohomology of two-step nilpotent groups

In [5], the notion of polynomial cocycles is used to give an expression for the second cohomology of T-groups with coefficients in a torsion-free nilpotent module. We make this expression concrete in the case of a T-group G of nilpotency class <=2 and coefficients in a trivial G-module, using a Lie algebra associated to the group. This approach allows us to construct explicit cocycles representing the elements of the second cohomology group.
