Spectral estimates for finite combinations of Hermite functions and null-controllability of hypoelliptic quadratic equations

Some recent works have shown that the heat equation posed on the whole Euclidean space is null-controllable in any positive time if and only if the control subset is a thick set. This necessary and sufficient condition for null-controllability is linked to some uncertainty principles as the Logvinenko-Sereda theorem which give limitations on the simultaneous concentration of a function and its Fourier transform. In the present work, we prove new uncertainty principles for finite combinations of Hermite functions and establish an analogue of the Logvinenko-Sereda theorem with an explicit control of the constant with respect to the energy level of the Hermite functions as eigenfunctions of the harmonic oscillator for thick control subsets. This spectral inequality allows to derive the null-controllability in any positive time from thick control regions for parabolic equations associated with a general class of hypoelliptic non-selfadjoint quadratic differential operators. More generally, the spectral inequality for finite combinations of Hermite functions is actually shown to hold for any measurable control subset of positive Lebesgue measure, and some quantitative estimates of the constant with respect to the energy level are given for two other classes of control subsets including the case of non-empty open control subsets.

Spectral inequalities for combinations of Hermite functions and null-controllability for evolution equations enjoying Gelfand-Shilov smoothing effects

This work is devoted to the study of uncertainty principles for finite combinations of Hermite functions. We establish some spectral inequalities for control subsets that are thick with respect to some unbounded densities growing almost linearly at infinity, and provide quantitative estimates, with respect to the energy level of the Hermite functions seen as eigenfunctions of the harmonic oscillator, for the constants appearing in these spectral estimates. These spectral inequalities allow to derive the null-controllability in any positive time for evolution equations enjoying specific regularizing effects. More precisely, for a given index $\frac{1}{2} \leq μ<1$, we deduce sufficient geometric conditions on control subsets to ensure the null-controllability of evolution equations enjoying regularizing effects in the symmetric Gelfand-Shilov space $S^μ_μ(\mathbb{R}^n)$. These results apply in particular to derive the null-controllability in any positive time for evolution equations associated to certain classes of hypoelliptic non-selfadjoint quadratic operators, or to fractional harmonic oscillators.

Geometric conditions for the exact controllability of fractional free and harmonic Schrödinger equations

We provide necessary and sufficient geometric conditions for the exact controllability of the one-dimensional fractional free and fractional harmonic Schrödinger equations. The necessary and sufficient condition for the exact controllability of fractional free Schrödinger equations is derived from the Logvinenko-Sereda theorem and its quantitative version established by Kovrijkine, whereas the one for the exact controllability of fractional harmonic Schrödinger equations is deduced from an infinite dimensional version of the Hautus test for Hermite functions and the Plancherel-Rotach formula.

Geometric conditions for the null-controllability of hypoelliptic quadratic parabolic equations with moving control supports

We study the null-controllability of some hypoelliptic quadratic parabolic equations posed on the whole Euclidean space with moving control supports, and provide necessary or sufficient geometric conditions on the moving control supports to ensure null-controllability. The first class of equations is the one associated to non-autonomous Ornstein-Uhlenbeck operators satisfying a generalized Kalman rank condition. In particular, when the moving control supports comply with the flow associated to the transport part of the Ornstein-Uhlenbeck operators, a necessary and sufficient condition for null-controllability on the moving control supports is established. The second class of equations is the class of accretive non-selfadjoint quadratic operators with zero singular spaces for which some sufficient geometric conditions on the moving control supports are also given to ensure null-controllability.

Null-controllability of hypoelliptic quadratic differential equations

We study the null-controllability of parabolic equations associated to a general class of hypoelliptic quadratic differential operators. Quadratic differential operators are operators defined in the Weyl quantization by complex-valued quadratic symbols. We consider in this work the class of accretive quadratic operators with zero singular spaces. These possibly degenerate non-selfadjoint differential operators are known to be hypoelliptic and to generate contraction semigroups which are smoothing in specific Gelfand-Shilov spaces for any positive time. Thanks to this regularizing effect, we prove by adapting the Lebeau-Robbiano method that parabolic equations associated to these operators are null-controllable in any positive time from control regions, for which null-controllability is classically known to hold in the case of the heat equation on the whole space. Some applications of this result are then given to the study of parabolic equations associated to hypoelliptic Ornstein-Uhlenbeck operators acting on weighted $L^2$ spaces with respect to invariant measures. By using the same strategy, we also establish the null-controllability in any positive time from the same control regions for parabolic equations associated to any hypoelliptic Ornstein-Uhlenbeck operator acting on the flat $L^2$ space extending in particular the known results for the heat equation or the Kolmogorov equation on the whole space.

Null-controllability of non-autonomous Ornstein-Uhlenbeck equations

We study the null-controllability of parabolic equations associated to non-autonomous Ornstein-Uhlenbeck operators. When a Kalman type condition holds for some positive time $T>0$, these parabolic equations are shown to enjoy a Gevrey regularizing effect at time $T>0$. Thanks to this regularizing effect, we prove by adapting the Lebeau-Robbiano method that these parabolic equations are null-controllable in time greater than or equal to $T>0$ from control regions, for which null-controllability is classically known to hold in the case of the heat equation.

Generalized Mehler formula for time-dependent non-selfadjoint quadratic operators and propagation of singularities

We study evolution equations associated to time-dependent dissipative non-selfadjoint quadratic operators. We prove that the solution operators to these non-autonomous evolution equations are given by Fourier integral operators whose kernels are Gaussian tempered distributions associated to non-negative complex symplectic linear transformations, and we derive a generalized Mehler formula for their Weyl symbols. Some applications to the study of the propagation of Gabor singularities (characterizing the lack of Schwartz regularity) for the solutions to non-autonomous quadratic evolution equations are given.

Propagation of Gabor singularities for Schrödinger equations with quadratic Hamiltonians

We study propagation of the Gabor wave front set for a Schrödinger equation with a Hamiltonian that is the Weyl quantization of a quadratic form with non-negative real part. We point out that the singular space associated to the quadratic form plays a crucial role for the understanding of this propagation. We show that the Gabor singularities of the solution to the equation for positive times are always contained in the singular space, and that they propagate in this set along the flow of the Hamilton vector field associated to the imaginary part of the quadratic form. As an application we obtain for the heat equation a sufficient condition on the Gabor wave front set of the initial datum tempered distribution that implies regularization to Schwartz regularity for positive times.

Short-time asymptotics of the regularizing effect for semigroups generated by quadratic operators

We study accretive quadratic operators with zero singular spaces. These degenerate non-selfadjoint differential operators are known to be hypoelliptic and to generate contraction semigroups which are smoothing in the Schwartz space for any positive time. In this work, we study the short-time asymptotics of the regularizing effect induced by these semigroups. We show that these short-time asymptotics of the regularizing effect depend on the directions of the phase space, and that this dependence can be nicely understood through the structure of the singular space. As a byproduct of these results, we derive sharp subelliptic estimates for accretive quadratic operators with zero singular spaces pointing out that the loss of derivatives with respect to the elliptic case also depends on the phase space directions according to the structure of the singular space. Some applications of these results are then given to the study of degenerate hypoelliptic Ornstein-Uhlenbeck operators and degenerate hypoelliptic Fokker-Planck operators.

From semigroups to subelliptic estimates for quadratic operators

Using an approach based on the techniques of FBI transforms, we give a new simple proof of the global subelliptic estimates for non-selfadjoint non-elliptic quadratic differential operators, under a natural averaging condition on the Weyl symbols of the operators, established by the second author. The loss of the derivatives in the subelliptic estimates depends directly on algebraic properties of the Hamilton maps of the quadratic symbols. Using the FBI point of view, we also give accurate smoothing estimates of Gelfand-Shilov type for the associated heat semigroup in the limit of small times.

Some remarks on degenerate hypoelliptic Ornstein-Uhlenbeck operators

We study degenerate hypoelliptic Ornstein-Uhlenbeck operators in $L^2$ spaces with respect to invariant measures. The purpose of this article is to show how recent results on general quadratic operators apply to the study of degenerate hypoelliptic Ornstein-Uhlenbeck operators. We first show that some known results about the spectral and subelliptic properties of Ornstein-Uhlenbeck operators may be directly recovered from the general analysis of quadratic operators with zero singular spaces. We also provide new resolvent estimates for hypoelliptic Ornstein-Uhlenbeck operators. We show in particular that the spectrum of these non-selfadjoint operators may be very unstable under small perturbations and that their resolvents can blow-up in norm far away from their spectra. Furthermore, we establish sharp resolvent estimates in specific regions of the resolvent set which enable us to prove exponential return to equilibrium.

Phase space analysis and functional calculus for the linearized Landau and Boltzmann operators

In many works, the linearized non-cutoff Boltzmann operator is considered to behave essentially as a fractional Laplacian. In the present work, we prove that the linearized non-cutoff Boltzmann operator with Maxwellian molecules is exactly equal to a fractional power of the linearized Landau operator which is the sum of the harmonic oscillator and the spherical Laplacian. This result allows to display explicit sharp coercive estimates satisfied by the linearized non-cutoff Boltzmann operator for both Maxwellian and non-Maxwellian molecules.

Spectral and phase space analysis of the linearized non-cutoff Kac collision operator

The non-cutoff Kac operator is a kinetic model for the non-cutoff radially symmetric Boltzmann operator. For Maxwellian molecules, the linearization of the non-cutoff Kac operator around a Maxwellian distribution is shown to be a function of the harmonic oscillator, to be diagonal in the Hermite basis and to be essentially a fractional power of the harmonic oscillator. This linearized operator is a pseudodifferential operator, and we provide a complete asymptotic expansion for its symbol in a class enjoying a nice symbolic calculus. Related results for the linearized non-cutoff radially symmetric Boltzmann operator are also proven.

Eigenvalues and subelliptic estimates for non-selfadjoint semiclassical operators with double characteristics

For a class of non-selfadjoint $h$--pseudodifferential operators with double characteristics, we give a precise description of the spectrum and establish accurate semiclassical resolvent estimates in a neighborhood of the origin. Specifically, assuming that the quadratic approximations of the principal symbol of the operator along the double characteristics enjoy a partial ellipticity property along a suitable subspace of the phase space, namely their singular space, we give a precise description of the spectrum of the operator in an ${\cal O}(h)$--neighborhood of the origin. Moreover, when all the singular spaces are reduced to zero, we establish accurate semiclassical resolvent estimates of subelliptic type, which depend directly on algebraic properties of the Hamilton maps associated to the quadratic approximations of the principal symbol.
