Spinon bases in supersymmetric CFTs

We present a novel way to organise the finite size spectra of a class of conformal field theories (CFT) with $\mathcal{N}=2$ or (non-linear) $\mathcal{N}=4$ superconformal symmetry. Generalising the spinon basis of the $SU(n)_1$ WZW theories, we introduce supersymmetric spinons $(ϕ^-, ϕ^{+})$, which form a representation of the supersymmetry algebra. In each case, we show how to construct a multi-spinon basis of the chiral CFT spectra. The multi-spinon states are labelled by a collection $\{ n_j \}$ of (discrete) momenta. The state-content for given choice of $\{ n_j \}$ is determined through a generalised exclusion principle, similar to Haldane's `motif' rules for the $SU(n)_1$ theories. In the simplest case, which is the ${\cal N}=2$ superconformal theory with central charge $c=1$, we develop an algebraic framework similar to the Yangian symmetry of the $SU(2)_1$ theory. It includes an operator $H_2$, akin to a CFT Haldane-Shastry Hamiltonian, which is diagonalised by multi-spinon states. In all cases studied, we obtain finite partition sums by capping the spinon-momenta to some finite value. For the $\mathcal{N}=2$ superconformal CFTs, this finitisation precisely leads to the so-called M$_k$ supersymmetric lattice models with characteristic order-$k$ exclusion rules on the lattice. Finitising the $c=2$ CFT with non-linear ${\cal N}=4$ superconformal symmetry similarly gives lattice model partition sums for spin-full fermions with on-site and nearest neighbour exclusion.

Defects and degeneracies in supersymmetry protected phases

We analyse a class of 1D lattice models, known as M$_k$ models, which are characterised by an order-$k$ clustering of spin-less fermions and by ${\cal N}=2$ lattice supersymmetry. Our main result is the identification of a class of (bulk or edge) defects, that are in one-to-one correspondence with so-called spin fields in a corresponding $\mathbb{Z}_k$ parafermion CFT. In the gapped regime, injecting such defects leads to ground state degeneracies that are protected by the supersymmetry. The defects, which are closely analogous to quasi-holes over the fermionic Read-Rezayi quantum Hall states, display characteristic fusion rules, which are of Ising type for $k=2$ and of Fibonacci type for $k=3$.

A supersymmetric multicritical point in a model of lattice fermions

We study a model of spinless fermions with infinite nearest-neighbor repulsion on the square ladder which has microscopic supersymmetry. It has been conjectured that in the continuum the model is described by the superconformal minimal model with central charge c=3/2. Thus far it has not been possible to confirm this conjecture due to strong finite-size corrections in numerical data. We trace the origin of these corrections to the presence of unusual marginal operators that break Lorentz invariance, but preserve part of the supersymmetry. By relying mostly on entanglement entropy calculations with the density-matrix renormalization group, we are able to reduce finite-size effects significantly. This allows us to unambiguously determine the continuum theory of the model. We also study perturbations of the model and establish that the supersymmetric model is a multicritical point. Our work underlines the power of entanglement entropy as a probe of the phases of quantum many-body systems.

Strange Metals in One Spatial Dimension

We consider 1+1 dimensional SU(N) gauge theory coupled to a multiplet of massive Dirac fermions transforming in the adjoint representation of the gauge group. The only global symmetry of this theory is a U(1) associated with the conserved Dirac fermion number, and we study the theory at variable, non-zero densities. The high density limit is characterized by a deconfined Fermi surface state with Fermi wavevector equal to that of free gauge-charged fermions. Its low energy fluctuations are described by a coset conformal field theory with central charge c=(N^2-1)/3 and an emergent N=(2,2) supersymmetry: the U(1) fermion number symmetry becomes an R-symmetry. We determine the exact scaling dimensions of the operators associated with Friedel oscillations and pairing correlations. For N>2, we find that the symmetries allow relevant perturbations to this state. We discuss aspects of the N->infty limit, and its possible dual description in AdS3 involving string theory or higher-spin gauge theory. We also discuss the low density limit of the theory by computing the low lying bound state spectrum of the large N gauge theory numerically at zero density, using discretized light cone quantization.

Particles in non-Abelian gauge potentials - Landau problem and insertion of non-Abelian flux

We study charged spin-1/2 particles in two dimensions, subject to a perpendicular non-Abelian magnetic field. Specializing to a choice of vector potential that is spatially constant but non-Abelian, we investigate the Landau level spectrum in planar and spherical geometry, paying particular attention to the role of the total angular momentum J = L +S. After this we show that the adiabatic insertion of non-Abelian flux in a spin-polarized quantum Hall state leads to the formation of charged spin-textures, which in the simplest cases can be identified with quantum Hall Skyrmions.

Charged spin textures over the Moore-Read quantum Hall state

We study charged spin textures (CST) over the Moore-Read quantum Hall state at filling factor 5/2. We develop an algebraic framework and show that the pairing condition that is inherent in the Moore-Read state naturally leads to a class of charged spin textures, labeled by winding numbers [w_I, w_II]. The fundamental CST, with labels [1,0] and electric charge e/4, is identified with the polar core vortex known in the spin-1 BEC literature. The spin texture carried by the fusion product of fundamental CSTs is correlated with the fusion channel of the underlying non-Abelian quasiholes.

Non-Abelian anyons: when Ising meets Fibonacci

We consider an interface between two non-Abelian quantum Hall states: the Moore-Read state, supporting anyons of Ising type, and the k=2 NASS (non-Abelian spin-singlet) state, supporting anyons of Fibonacci type. It is shown that the interface supports neutral excitations described by a 1+1 dimensional conformal field theory with central charge c=7/10. We discuss effects of the mismatch of the quantum statistical properties of the quasi-holes between the two sides, as reflected by the interface theory.

Experimental signatures of non-Abelian statistics in clustered quantum Hall states

We discuss transport experiments for various non-Abelian quantum Hall states, including the Read-Rezayi series and a paired spin singlet state. We analyze the signatures of the unique characters of these states on Coulomb blockaded transport through large quantum dots. We show that the non-Abelian nature of the states manifests itself through modulations in the spacings between Coulomb blockade peaks as a function of the area of the dot. Even though the current flows only along the edge, these modulations vary with the number of quasiholes that are localized in the bulk of the dot. We discuss the effect of relaxation of edge states on the predicted Coulomb blockade patterns, and show that it may suppress the dependence on the number of bulk quasiholes. We predict the form of the lowest order interference term in a Fabry-Perot interferometer for the spin singlet state. The result indicates that this interference term is suppressed for certain values of the quantum numbers of the collective state of the bulk quasiholes, in agreement with previous findings for other clustered states belonging to the Read-Rezayi series.

Charge frustration and quantum criticality for strongly correlated fermions

We study a model of strongly correlated electrons on the square lattice which exhibits charge frustration and quantum critical behavior. The potential is tuned to make the interactions supersymmetric. We establish a rigorous mathematical result which relates quantum ground states to certain tiling configurations on the square lattice. For periodic boundary conditions this relation implies that the number of ground states grows exponentially with the linear dimensions of the system. We present substantial analytic and numerical evidence that for open boundary conditions the system has gapless edge modes.

Cooper pairs and exclusion statistics from coupled free-fermion chains

We show how to couple two free-fermion chains so that the excitations consist of Cooper pairs with zero energy, and free particles obeying (mutual) exclusion statistics. This behavior is reminiscent of anyonic superconductivity, and of a ferromagnetic version of the Haldane-Shastry spin chain, although here the interactions are local. We solve this model using the nested Bethe ansatz, and find all the eigenstates; the Cooper pairs correspond to exact-string or ``0/0'' solutions of the Bethe equations. We show how the model possesses an infinite-dimensional symmetry algebra, which is a supersymmetric version of the Yangian symmetry algebra for the Haldane-Shastry model.

Superfrustration of charge degrees of freedom

We review recent results, obtained with P. Fendley, on frustration of quantum charges in lattice models for itinerant fermions with strong repulsive interactions. A judicious tuning of kinetic and interaction terms leads to models possessing supersymmetry. In such models frustration takes the form of what we call superfrustration: an extensive degeneracy of supersymmetric ground states. We present a gallery of examples of superfrustration on a variety of 2D lattices.

Wavefunctions for topological quantum registers

We present explicit wavefunctions for quasi-hole excitations over a variety of non-abelian quantum Hall states: the Read-Rezayi states with k\geq 3 clustering properties and a paired spin-singlet quantum Hall state. Quasi-holes over these states constitute a topological quantum register, which can be addressed by braiding quasi-holes. We obtain the braid properties by direct inspection of the quasi-hole wavefunctions. We establish that the braid properties for the paired spin-singlet state are those of `Fibonacci anyons', and thus suitable for universal quantum computation. Our derivations in this paper rely on explicit computations in the parafermionic Conformal Field Theories that underly these particular quantum Hall states.

Entanglement entropy in fermionic Laughlin states

We present analytic and numerical calculations on the bipartite entanglement entropy in fractional quantum Hall states of the fermionic Laughlin sequence. The partitioning of the system is done both by dividing Landau level orbitals and by grouping the fermions themselves. For the case of orbital partitioning, our results can be related to spatial partitioning, enabling us to extract a topological quantity (the `total quantum dimension') characterizing the Laughlin states. For particle partitioning we prove a very close upper bound for the entanglement entropy of a subset of the particles with the rest, and provide an interpretation in terms of exclusion statistics.

Exact results for strongly-correlated fermions in 2+1 dimensions

We derive exact results for a model of strongly-interacting spinless fermions hopping on a two-dimensional lattice. By exploiting supersymmetry, we find the number and type of ground states exactly. Exploring various lattices and limits, we show how the ground states can be frustrated, quantum critical, or combine frustration with a Wigner crystal. We show that on generic lattices, the model is in an exotic ``super-frustrated'' state characterized by an extensive ground-state entropy.

Supersymmetric Model of Spin-1/2 Fermions on a Chain

In recent work, N=2 supersymmetry has been proposed as a tool for the analysis of itinerant, correlated fermions on a lattice. In this paper we extend these considerations to the case of lattice fermions with spin 1/2 . We introduce a model for correlated spin-1/2 fermions with a manifest N=4 supersymmetry, and analyze its properties. The supersymmetric ground states that we find represent holes in an anti-ferromagnetic background.

Hard squares with negative activity

We show that the hard-square lattice gas with activity z= -1 has a number of remarkable properties. We conjecture that all the eigenvalues of the transfer matrix are roots of unity. They fall into groups (``strings'') evenly spaced around the unit circle, which have interesting number-theoretic properties. For example, the partition function on an M by N lattice with periodic boundary condition is identically 1 when M and N are coprime. We provide evidence for these conjectures from analytical and numerical arguments.

Lattice fermion models with supersymmetry

We investigate a family of lattice models with manifest N=2 supersymmetry. The models describe fermions on a 1D lattice, subject to the constraint that no more than k consecutive lattice sites may be occupied. We discuss the special properties arising from the supersymmetry, and present Bethe ansatz solutions of the simplest models. We display the connections of the k=1 model with the spin-1/2 antiferromagnetic XXZ chain at Δ=-1/2, and the k=2 model with both the su(2|1)-symmetric tJ model in the ferromagnetic regime and the integrable spin-1 XXZ chain at Δ=-1/\sqrt{2}. We argue that these models include critical points described by the superconformal minimal models.

Lattice Models with N=2 Supersymmetry

We introduce lattice models with explicit N=2 supersymmetry. In these interacting models, the supersymmetry generators Q^+ and Q^- yield the Hamiltonian H={Q^+,Q^-} on any graph. The degrees of freedom can be described as either fermions with hard cores, or as quantum dimers. The Hamiltonian of our simplest model contains a hopping term and a repulsive potential, as well as the hard-core repulsion. We discuss these models from a variety of perspectives: using a fundamental relation with conformal field theory, via the Bethe ansatz, and using cohomology methods. The simplest model provides a manifestly-supersymmetric lattice regulator for the supersymmetric point of the massless 1+1-dimensional Thirring (Luttinger) model. We discuss the ground-state structure of this same model on more complicated graphs, including a 2-leg ladder, and discuss some generalizations.
