Syzygies of multiplier ideals on singular varieties

It was recently established by the first two authors that multiplier ideals on a smooth variety satisfy some special syzygetic properties. The purpose of this note is to show how some of these can be extended to the singular setting.

Discreteness and rationality of F-thresholds

The F-thresholds are characteristic p analogs of the jumping coefficients for multiplier ideals in characteristic zero. In this article we give an alternative description of the F-thresholds of an ideal in a regular and F--finite ring $R$. This enables us to settle two open questions posed in [Mustata, Takagi, Watanabe: F-thresholds and Bernstein-Sato polynomials], namely we show that the F-thresholds are rational and discrete.

Core versus graded core and global sections of line bundles

We find formulas for the graded core of certain m-primary ideals in a graded ring. In particular, if S is the section ring of an ample line bundle on a Cohen-Macaulay complex projective variety, we show that under suitable hypothesis, the core and graded core of the ideal of S generated by all elements of degrees at least N (for some, equivalently every, large N) are equal if and only if the line bundle admits a non-zero global section. We also prove a formula for the graded core of the powers of the unique homogeneous maximal ideal in a standard graded Cohen-Macaulay ring of arbitrary characteristic. Several open problems are posed whose solutions would lead to progress on a non-vanishing conjecture of Kawamata.

Jumping Coefficients of Multiplier Ideals

We study in this paper some local invariants attached via multiplier ideals to an effective divisor or ideal sheaf on a smooth complex variety. First considered (at least implicitly) by Libgober and by Loeser and Vaquie, these jumping coefficients consist of an increasing sequence of rational numbers beginning with the log canonical threshold of the divisor or ideal in question. They encode interesting geometric and algebraic information, and we show that they arise naturally in several different contexts. Given a polynomial f having only isolated singularities, results of Varchenko, Loeser and Vaquie imply that if ξis a jumping number of f = 0 lying in the interval (0, 1], then -ξis a root of the Bernstein-Sato polynomial of f. We adapt an argument of Kollar to show prove that this holds also when the singular locus of f has positive dimension. In a more algebraic direction, we show that the number of such jumping coefficients bounds the uniform Artin-Rees number of the principal ideal (f) in the sense of Huneke: in the case of isolated singularities, this in turn leads to bounds involving the Milnor and Tyurina numbers of f . Along the way, we establish a general result relating multiplier to Jacobian ideals. We also explore the extension of these ideas to the setting of graded families of ideals. The paper contains many concrete examples.

Tight closure commutes with localization in binomial rings

It is proved that tight closure commutes with localization in any domain which has a module finite extension in which tight closure is known to commute with localization. It follows that tight closure commutes with localization in binomial rings, in particular in semigroup or toric rings.

On a Non-Vanishing Conjecture of Kawamata and the Core of an Ideal

We show that under suitable hypothesis (which are sharp in certain sense) that the core of an m-primary ideal in a regular local ring of dimension d is equal to the adjoint (or multiplier) ideal of its d-th power, generalizing a result of Huneke and Swanson in dimension two. We also prove a version of this in the singular setting, which we show to be intimately related to the problem of finding global sections of ample line bundles on projective varieties. In particular, we show that a graded analog of our formula for core would imply a remarkable conjecture of Kawamata predicting that every ample adjoint bundle has a non-trivial section.

An Introduction to Tight Closure

This is an expanded version of the author's lecture at the Conference in Commutative Algebra and Algebraic Geometry in Messina Italy in June 1999. The purpose of the talk was to give a brief introduction to the subject of tight closure, aimed at commutative algebraists who have not before studied this topic. The first part focused mainly on the definition and basic properties, with the second part focusing on some applications to algebraic geometry, particularly to global generation of adjoint linear series. These lecture notes follow even more closely a series of two lectures I gave in Kashikojima, Japan, at the Twentieth Annual Japanese Conference in Commutative Algebra the previous fall, and were distributed also in conjunction with that conference.

Linear bounds on growth of associated primes

We find explicit bounds on the primary components and on the Castelnuovo-Mumford regularity of powers of monomial ideals. We also analyze the primary decompositions of Katzman's example.

Simplicity of Rings of Differential Operators in Prime Characteristic

Let W be a finite dimensional representation of a linearly reductive group G over a field k. Motivated by their work on classical rings of invariants, Levasseur and Stafford asked whether the ring of invariants under G of the symmetric algebra of W has a simple ring of differential operators. In this paper, we show that this is true in prime characteristic. Indeed, if R is a graded subring of a polynomial ring over a perfect field of characteristic p>0 and if the inclusionof R into S splits, then D_k(R) is a simple ring. In the last section of the paper, we discuss how one might try to deduce the characteristic zero case from this result. As yet, however, this is a subtle problem and the answer to the question of Levasseur and Stafford remains open in characteristic zero.

Uniform Approximation of Abhyankar Valuation Ideals in Smooth Function Fields

In this paper we use the theory of multiplier ideals to show that the valuation ideals of a rank one Abhyankar valuation centered at a smooth point of a complex algebraic variety are approximated, in a quite strong sense, by sequences of powers of fixed ideals. Fix a rank one valuation v centered at a smooth point x on an algebraic variety over a field of characteristic zero. Assume that v is Abhyankar, that is, that its rational rank plus its transcendence degree equal the dimension of the variety. Let a_m denote the ideal of elements in the local ring of x whose valuations are at least m. Our main theorem is that there exists e>0 such that a_{mn} is contained in (a_{m-e})^n for all m and n. This can be viewed as a greatly strengthened form of Izumi's Theorem for Abhyankar valuations centered on smooth complex varieties.

Uniform Bounds and Symbolic Powers on Smooth Varieties

We show how multiplier ideals can be used to obtain uniform multiplicative bounds for certain families of ideals on a smooth complex algebraic variety. In particular we prove a quick but rather surprising result about symbolic powers of radical ideals on such a variety. Specifically, let I be a radical ideal sheaf on a smooth variety X defining a reduced subscheme Z of X and suppose that every irreducible component of Z has codimension at most e in X. Given an integer m > 0 suppose that f is a function germ that vanishes to order at least e.m at a general point of each irreducible component of Z . Then in fact f lies in the m-th power I^m of I.

Rational and Non-Rational Algebraic Varieties: Lectures of János Kollár

This is a detailed write-up of Kollár's course at the EMS summer school in Algebraic Geometry in Eger, Hungary, August 1996. The topics include definitions and examples of rational and unirational varieties, with special attention to varieties defined over non-algebraically closed fields, Segre's theorem on non-rationality of cubic surfaces of Picard number one, Manin's theorem that birationally equivalent cubic surfaces of Picard number one are projectively equivalent, and Kollár's method for constructing examples of low degree non-rational hypersurfaces. Includes many exercises and their solutions.
