$\mathcal{Z}$-stability for $\mathrm C^*$-algebras of minimal line-bundle-twisted homeomorphisms with the small boundary property

In this paper we show that the Cuntz--Pimsner algebras associated to minimal homeomorphisms twisted by line bundles, along with their orbit-breaking subalgebras, are $\mathcal{Z}$-stable whenever the underlying dynamical system has the small boundary property. This entails that this class is classified by the Elliott invariant. Furthermore, we show that the tensor product of two such $\mathrm{C}^*$-algebras is always $\mathcal{Z}$-stable, without assuming the small boundary property. In particular this applies to $\mathrm{C}^*$-algebras arising from systems with positive mean dimension.

Recursive subhomogeneity of orbit-breaking subalgebras of $\mathrm{C}^*$-algebras associated to minimal homeomorphisms twisted by line bundles

In this paper, we construct a recursive subhomogeneous decomposition for the Cuntz--Pimsner algebras obtained from breaking the orbit of a minimal Hilbert $C(X)$-bimodule at a subset $Y \subset X$ with non-empty interior. This generalizes the known recursive subhomogeneous decomposition for orbit-breaking subalgebras of crossed products by minimal homeomorphisms.

A remark on the Hochschild dimension of liberated quantum groups

Let $A$ be a Hopf algebra equipped with a projection onto the coordinate Hopf algebra $\mathcal{O}(G)$ of a semisimple algebraic group $G$. It is shown that if $A$ admits a suitably non-degenerate comodule $V$ and the induced $G$-module structure of $V$ is non-trivial, then the third Hochschild homology group of $A$ is non-trivial.

Nichols Algebras and Quantum Principal Bundles

We introduce a general framework for associating to a homogeneous quantum principal bundle a Yetter-Drinfeld module structure on the cotangent space of the base calculus. The holomorphic and anti-holomorphic Heckenberger-Kolb calculi of the quantum Grassmannians are then presented in this framework. This allows us to express the calculi in terms of the corresponding Nichols algebras. The extension of this result to all irreducible quantum flag manifolds is then conjectured.

$\mathrm{C}^*$-algebras associated to homeomorphisms twisted by vector bundles over finite dimensional spaces

In this paper we study Cuntz--Pimsner algebras associated to $\mathrm{C}^*$-correspondences over commutative $\mathrm{C}^*$-algebras from the point of view of the $\mathrm{C}^*$-algebra classification programme. We show that when the correspondence comes from an aperiodic homeomorphism of a finite-dimensional infinite compact metric space $X$ twisted by a vector bundle, the resulting Cuntz--Pimsner algebras have finite nuclear dimension. When the homeomorphism is minimal, this entails classification of these $\mathrm{C}^*$-algebras by the Elliott invariant. This establishes a dichotomy: when the vector bundle has rank one, the Cuntz--Pimsner algebra has stable rank one. Otherwise, it is purely infinite. For a Cuntz--Pimsner algebra of a minimal homeomorphism of an infinite compact metric space $X$ twisted by a line bundle over $X$, we introduce orbit-breaking subalgebras. With no assumptions on the dimension of $X$, we show that they are centrally large subalgebras and hence simple and stably finite. When the dimension of $X$ is finite, they are furthermore $\mathcal{Z}$-stable and hence classified by the Elliott invariant.

Positive Line Bundles Over the Irreducible Quantum Flag Manifolds

Noncommutative Kähler structures were recently introduced by the second author as a framework for studying noncommutative Kähler geometry on quantum homogeneous spaces. It was subsequently observed that the notion of a positive vector bundle directly generalises to this setting, as does the Kodaira vanishing theorem. In this paper, by restricting to covariant Kähler structures of irreducible type (those having an irreducible space of holomorphic one-forms) we provide simple cohomological criteria for positivity, offering a means to avoid explicit curvature calculations. These general results are applied to our motivating family of examples, the irreducible quantum flag manifolds $\mathcal{O}_q(G/L_S)$. Building on the recently established noncommutative Borel-Weil theorem, every covariant line bundle over $\mathcal{O}_q(G/L_S)$ can be identified as positive, negative, or flat, and hence we can conclude that each Kähler structure is of Fano type. Moreover, it proves possible to extend the Borel-Weil theorem for $\mathcal{O}_q(G/L_S)$ to a direct noncommutative generalisation of the classical Bott-Borel-Weil theorem for positive line bundles.

Minimal homeomorphisms and topological $K$-theory

The Lefschetz fixed point theorem provides a powerful obstruction to the existence of minimal homeomorphisms on well-behaved spaces such as finite CW-complexes. We show that these obstructions do not hold for more general spaces. More precisely, minimal homeomorphisms are constructed on space with prescribed $K$-theory or cohomology. We also allow for some control of the map on $K$-theory and cohomology induced from these minimal homeomorphisms. This allows for the construction of many minimal homeomorphisms that are not homotopic to the identity. Applications to $C^*$-algebras will be discussed in another paper.

Optimal transport and unitary orbits in C*-algebras

Two areas of mathematics which have received substantial attention in recent years are the theory of optimal transport and the Elliott classification programme for C*-algebras. We combine these two seemingly unrelated disciplines to make progress on a classical problem of Weyl. In particular, we show how results from the Elliott classification programme can be used to translate continuous transport of spectral measures into optimal unitary conjugation in C*-algebras. As a consequence, whenever two normal elements of a sufficiently well-behaved C*-algebra share a spectrum amenable to such continuous transport, and have trivial K_1-class, the distance between their unitary orbits can be computed tracially.

Holomorphic Relative Hopf Modules over the Irreducible Quantum Flag Manifolds

We construct covariant $q$-deformed holomorphic structures for all finitely-generated relative Hopf modules over the irreducible quantum flag manifolds endowed with their Heckenberger--Kolb calculi. In the classical limit these reduce to modules of sections of holomorphic homogeneous vector bundles over irreducible flag manifolds. For the case of simple relative Hopf modules, we show that this covariant holomorphic structure is unique. This generalises earlier work of Majid, Khalkhali, Landi, and van Suijlekom for line modules of the Podleś sphere, and subsequent work of Khalkhali and Moatadelro for general quantum projective space.

Classifiable $\mathrm{C}^*$-algebras from minimal $\mathbb{Z}$-actions and their orbit-breaking subalgebras

In this paper we consider the question of what abelian groups can arise as the $K$-theory of $\mathrm{C}^*$-algebras arising from minimal dynamical systems. We completely characterize the $K$-theory of the crossed product of a space $X$ with finitely generated $K$-theory by an action of the integers and show that crossed products by a minimal homeomorphisms exhaust the range of these possible $K$-theories. Moreover, we may arrange that the minimal systems involved are uniquely ergodic, so that their $\mathrm{C}^*$-algebras are classified by their Elliott invariants. We also investigate the $K$-theory and the Elliott invariants of orbit-breaking algebras. We show that given arbitrary countable abelian groups $G_0$ and $G_1$ and any Choquet simplex $Δ$ with finitely many extreme points, we can find a minimal orbit-breaking relation such that the associated $\mathrm{C}^*$-algebra has $K$-theory given by this pair of groups and tracial state space affinely homeomorphic to $Δ$. We also improve on the second author's previous results by using our orbit-breaking construction to $\mathrm{C}^*$-algebras of minimal amenable equivalence relations with real rank zero that allow torsion in both $K_0$ and $K_1$. These results have important applications to the Elliott classification program for $\mathrm{C}^*$-algebras. In particular, we make a step towards determining the range of the Elliott invariant of the $\mathrm{C}^*$-algebras associated to étale equivalence relations.

Non-homogeneous extensions of Cantor minimal systems

Floyd gave an example of a minimal dynamical system which was an extension of an odometer and the fibres of the associated factor map were either singletons or intervals. Gjerde and Johansen showed that the odometer could be replaced by any Cantor minimal system. Here, we show further that the intervals can be generalized to cubes of arbitrary dimension and to attractors of certain iterated function systems. We discuss applications.

Pure infiniteness and paradoxicality for graph $C^*$-algebras

We obtain necessary and sufficient conditions for pure infiniteness of the path groupoid $C^*$-algebra of a row-finite graph without sinks. In particular we show that for such a path groupoid $\mathcal{G}_E$, the properties of being essential principal and the existence of a basis of $(\mathcal{G}_E^a, 2, 1)$-paradoxical sets for the topology are not only sufficient, but also necessary.

Constructions in minimal amenable dynamics and applications to the classification of $\mathrm{C}^*$-algebras

We study the existence of minimal dynamical systems, their orbit and minimal orbit-breaking equivalence relations, and their applications to C*-algebras and K-theory. We show that given any finite CW-complex there exists a space with the same K-theory and cohomology that admits a minimal homeomorphism. The proof relies on the existence of homeomorphisms on point-like spaces constructed by the authors in previous work, together with existence results for skew product systems due to Glasner and Weiss. To any minimal dynamical system one can associate minimal equivalence relations by breaking orbits at small subsets. Using Renault's groupoid C*-algebra construction we can associate K-theory groups to minimal dynamical systems and orbit-breaking equivalence relations. We show that given arbitrary countable abelian groups $G_0$ and $G_1$ we can find a minimal orbit-breaking relation such that the K-theory of the associated C*-algebra is exactly this pair. These results have important applications to the Elliott classification program for C*-algebras. In particular, we make a step towards determining the range of the Elliott invariant of the C*-algebras associated to minimal dynamical systems with mean dimension zero and their minimal orbit-breaking relations

Group actions on Smale space C*-algebras

Group actions on a Smale space and the actions induced on the C*-algebras associated to such a dynamical system are studied. We show that an effective action of a discrete group on a mixing Smale space produces a strongly outer action on the homoclinic algebra. We then show that for irreducible Smale spaces, the property of finite Rokhlin dimension passes from the induced action on the homoclinic algbera to the induced actions on the stable and unstable C*-algebras. In each of these cases, we discuss the preservation of properties---such as finite nuclear dimension, Z-stability, and classification by Elliott invariants---in the resulting crossed products.

Nuclear dimension and classification of C*-algebras associated to Smale spaces

We show that the homoclinic C*-algebras of mixing Smale spaces are classifiable by the Elliott invariant. To obtain this result, we prove that the stable, unstable, and homoclinic C*-algebras associated to such Smale spaces have finite nuclear dimension. Our proof of finite nuclear dimension relies on Guentner, Willett, and Yu's notion of dynamic asymptotic dimension.

Constructing minimal homeomorphisms on point-like spaces and a dynamical presentation of the Jiang-Su algebra

The principal aim of this paper is to give a dynamical presentation of the Jiang-Su algebra. Originally constructed as an inductive limit of prime dimension drop algebras, the Jiang-Su algebra has gone from being a poorly understood oddity to having a prominent positive role in George Elliott's classification programme for separable, nuclear C*-algebras. Here, we exhibit an etale equivalence relation whose groupoid C*-algebra is isomorphic to the Jiang-Su algebra. The main ingredient is the construction of minimal homeomorphisms on infinite, compact metric spaces, each having the same cohomology as a point. This construction is also of interest in dynamical systems. Any self-map of an infinite, compact space with the same cohomology as a point has Lefschetz number one. Thus, if such a space were also to satisfy some regularity hypothesis (which our examples do not), then the Lefschetz-Hopf Theorem would imply that it does not admit a minimal homeomorphism.

C*-algebras of minimal dynamical systems of the product of a Cantor set and an odd dimensional sphere

Let β: S^n \to S^n, for n = 2k + 1, k \geq 1, be one of the known examples of a non-uniquely ergodic minimal diffeomorphism of an odd dimensional sphere. For every such minimal dynamical system (S^n, β) there is a Cantor minimal system (X, α) such that the corresponding product system (X x S^n, αx β) is minimal and the resulting crossed product C*-algebra C(X x S^n) \rtimes_{αx β} \mathbb{Z} is tracially approximately an interval algebra (TAI). This entails classification for such C*-algebras. Moreover, the minimal Cantor system (X, α) is such that each tracial state on C(X x S^n) \rtimes_β \mathbb{Z} induces the same state on the K_0-group and such that the embedding of C(S^n) \rtimes_β \mathbb{Z} into C(X x S^n) \rtimes_{αx β} \mathbb{Z} preserves the tracial state space. This implies C(S^n) \rtimes_β \mathbb{Z} is TAI after tensoring with the universal UHF algebra, which in turn shows that the C*-algebras of these examples of minimal diffeomorphisms of odd dimensional spheres are classified by their tracial state spaces.
