Burkholder integrals, Morrey's problem and quasiconformal mappings

Inspired by Morrey's Problem (on rank-one convex functionals) and the Burkholder integrals (of his martingale theory) we find that the Burkholder functionals $B_p$, $p \ge 2$, are quasiconcave, when tested on deformations of identity $f\in Id + C^\infty_0(Ω)$ with $B_p(Df(x)) \ge 0$ pointwise, or equivalently, deformations such that $|Df|^2 \leq \frac{p}{p-2} J_f$. In particular, this holds in explicit neighbourhoods of the identity map. Among the many immediate consequences, this gives the strongest possible $L^p$- estimates for the gradient of a principal solution to the Beltrami equation $\f_{\bar{z}} = μ(z) f_z$, for any $p$ in the critical interval $2 \leq p \leq 1+1/\|μ_f\|_\infty$. Examples of local maxima lacking symmetry manifest the intricate nature of the problem.

Optimal regularity for planar mappings of finite distortion

Let $f:Ω\to\IR^2$ be a mapping of finite distortion, where $Ω\subset\IR^2 .$ Assume that the distortion function $K(x,f)$ satisfies $e^{K(\cdot, f)}\in L^p_{loc}(Ω)$ for some $p>0.$ We establish optimal regularity and area distortion estimates for $f$. Especially, we prove that $|Df|^2 \log^{β-1}(e + |Df|) \in L^1_{loc}(Ω) $ for every $β<p.$ This answers positively well known conjectures due to Iwaniec and Martin \cite{IMbook} and to Iwaniec, Koskela and Martin \cite{IKM}.

Distortion of Hausdorff measures and improved Painlevé removability for quasiregular mappings

The classical Painlevé theorem tells that sets of zero length are removable for bounded analytic functions, while (some) sets of positive length are not. For general $K$-quasiregular mappings in planar domains the corresponding critical dimension is $\frac{2}{K+1}$. We show that when $K>1$, unexpectedly one has improved removability. More precisely, we prove that sets $E$ of $σ$-finite Hausdorff $\frac{2}{K+1}$-measure are removable for bounded $K$-quasiregular mappings. On the other hand, $\dim(E) = \frac{2}{K+1}$ is not enough to guarantee this property. We also study absolute continuity properties of pull-backs of Hausdorff measures under $K$-quasiconformal mappings, in particular at the relevant dimensions 1 and $\frac{2}{K+1}$. For general Hausdorff measures ${\cal H}^t$, $0 < t < 2$, we reduce the absolute continuity properties to an open question on conformal mappings.

Calderon's inverse problem for anisotropic conductivity in the plane

We study inverse conductivity problem for an anisotropic conductivity in $L^\infty$ in bounded and unbounded domains. Also, we give applications of the results in the case when Dirichlet-to-Neumann and Neumann-to-Dirichlet maps are given only on a part of the boundary.
