Theorems of Carathéodory, Helly, and Tverberg without dimension

We prove a no-dimensional version of Carathédory's theorem: given an $n$-element set $P\subset \Re^d$, a point $a \in \conv P$, and an integer $r\le d$, $r \le n$, there is a subset $Q\subset P$ of $r$ elements such that the distance between $a$ and $\conv Q$ is less than $\diam P/\sqrt {2r}$. A general no-dimension Helly type result is also proved with colourful and fractional consequences. Similar versions of Tverberg's theorem and some of their extensions are also established.

FAQ on the g-theorem and the hard Lefschetz theorem for face rings

This short review is the result of a minicourse at the Sapienza University of Rome the author gave about the proof of the $g$-theorem. We review the hard Lefschetz theorem for simplicial spheres, as well as the theory at its core: perturbations of maps, biased Poincaré pairings and a cobordism argument that relates the Lefschetz property of a manifold to the Lefschetz property on its boundary. We also sketch an alternative argument based on edge-contractions.

The Hard Lefschetz Theorem for PL spheres

We provide a simpler proof of the hard Lefschetz Theorem for face rings of PL spheres: While the algebraic theory remains the same, we replace the geometric constructions by Pachner's Theorem. This simplifies the reasoning for an important special case of the main result of the first author in arxiv:1812.10454, and already implies the McMullen g-conjecture for PL spheres, as well as the Grünbaum-Kalai-Sarkaria conjecture.

Combinatorial Lefschetz theorems beyond positivity

Consider a simplicial complex that allows for an embedding into $\mathbb{R}^d$. How many faces of dimension $\frac{d}{2}$ or higher can it have? How dense can they be? This basic question goes back to Descartes' "Lost Theorem" and Euler's work on polyhedra. Using it and other fundamental combinatorial problems, we introduce a version of the Kähler package beyond positivity, allowing us to prove the hard Lefschetz theorem for toric varieties (and beyond) even when the ample cone is empty. A particular focus lies on replacing the Hodge-Riemann relations by a non-degeneracy relation at torus-invariant subspaces, allowing us to state and prove a generalization of theorems of Hall and Laman in the setting of toric varieties and, more generally, the face rings of Hochster, Reisner and Stanley. This has several applications: - We fully characterize the possible face numbers of simplicial rational homology spheres, resolving the $g$-conjecture of McMullen in full generality and generalizing Stanley's earlier proof for simplicial polytopes. The same methods also verify a conjecture of Kühnel: if $M$ is a triangulated closed $(d-1)$-manifold on $n$ vertices, then \[\binom{d+1}{j}\mathrm{b}_{j-1}(M)\ \le \ \binom{n-d+j-2}{j}\ \quad \text{for}\ 1\le j\le \frac{d}{2}.\] - We prove that for a simplicial complex that embeds into $\mathbb{R}^{2d}$, the number of $d$-dimensional simplices exceeds the number of $(d-1)$-dimensional simplices by a factor of at most $d+2$. This generalizes a result going back to Descartes and Euler, and resolves the Grünbaum-Kalai-Sarkaria conjecture. We obtain from this a generalization of the celebrated crossing lemma: For a map of a simplicial complex $Δ$ into $\mathbb{R}^{2d}$, the number of pairwise intersections of $d$-simplices is at least \[\frac{f_d^{d+2}(Δ)}{(d+3)^{d+2}f_{d-1}^{d+1}(Δ)}\] provided $f_d(Δ)> (d+3)f_{d-1}(Δ)$.

Semistable reduction in characteristic 0

In 2000 Abramovich and Karu proved that any dominant morphism $f\:X\to B$ of varieties of characteristic zero can be made weakly semistable by replacing $B$ by a smooth alteration $B'$ and replacing the proper transform of $X$ by a modification $X'$. In the language of log geometry this means that $f'\:X'\to B'$ is log smooth and saturated for appropriate log structures. Moreover, Abramovich and Karu formulated a stronger conjecture that $f'\:X'\to B'$ can be even made semistable, which amounts to making $X'$ smooth as well, and explained why this is the best resolution of $f$ one might hope for. In this paper, we solve the semistable reduction conjecture in the larger generality of finite type morphisms of quasi-excellent schemes of characteristic zero.

Log smoothness and polystability over valuation rings

Let $\mathcal{O}$ be a valuation ring of height one of residual characteristic exponent $p$ and with algebraically closed field of fractions. Our main result provides a best possible resolution of the monoidal structure $M_X$ of a log variety $X$ over $\calO$ with a vertical log structure: there exists a log modification $Y\to X$ such that the monoidal structure of $Y$ is polystable. In particular, if $X$ is log smooth over $\mathcal{O}$, then $Y$ is polystable with a smooth generic fiber. As a corollary we deduce that any variety over $\mathcal{O}$ possesses a polystable alteration of degreee $p^n$. The core of our proof is a subdivision result for polyhedral complexes satisfying certain rationality conditions.

QGLBT for polytopes

We extend the assertion of the Generalized Lower Bound Theorem (GLBT) to general polytopes under the assumption that their low dimensional skeleton is simplicial, with partial results for the general case. We prove a quantitative version of the GLBT for general polytopes, and use it to give a topological necessary condition for polytopes to have vanishing toric $g_k$ entry. As another application of the QGLBT we prove a conjecture of Kalai on $g$-numbers for general polytopes approximating a smooth convex body.

Convexity of complements of tropical varieties, and approximations of currents

The goal of this note is to affirm a local version of the conjecture of Nisse--Sottile [NS16] on higher convexity of complements of tropical varieties, while providing a family of counter-examples for the global Nisse--Sottle conjecture in any codimension and dimension higher than 1. Moreover, it will be shown that, surprisingly, this family also provides a family of counter-examples for the generalized Hodge conjecture for positive currents in these dimensions, and gives rise to further approximability obstruction.

A Cheeger-type exponential bound for the number of triangulated manifolds

In terms of the number of triangles, it is known that there are more than exponentially many triangulations of surfaces, but only exponentially many triangulations of surfaces with bounded genus. In this paper we provide a first geometric extension of this result to higher dimensions. We show that in terms of the number of facets, there are only exponentially many geometric triangulations of space forms with bounded geometry in the sense of Cheeger (curvature and volume bounded below, and diameter bounded above). This establishes a combinatorial version of Cheeger's finiteness theorem. Further consequences of our work are: (1) There are exponentially many geometric triangulations of $S^d$. (2) There are exponentially many convex triangulations of the d-ball.

Hodge Theory for Combinatorial Geometries

We prove the hard Lefschetz theorem and the Hodge-Riemann relations for a commutative ring associated to an arbitrary matroid M. We use the Hodge-Riemann relations to resolve a conjecture of Heron, Rota, and Welsh that postulates the log-concavity of the coefficients of the characteristic polynomial of M. We furthermore conclude that the f-vector of the independence complex of a matroid forms a log-concave sequence, proving a conjecture of Mason and Welsh for general matroids.

On Betti numbers of flag complexes with forbidden induced subgraphs

We analyze the asymptotic extremal growth rate of the Betti numbers of clique complexes of graphs on n vertices not containing a fixed forbidden induced subgraph H. In particular, we prove a theorem of the alternative: for any H the growth rate achieves exactly one of five possible exponentials, that is, independent of the field of coefficients, the nth root of the maximal total Betti number over n-vertex graphs with no induced copy of H has a limit, as n tends to infinity, and, ranging over all H, exactly five different limits are attained. For the interesting case where H is the 4-cycle, the above limit is 1, and we prove a slightly superpolynomial upper bound.

Barycentric subdivisions of convex complexes are collapsible

A classical question in PL topology, asked among others by Hudson, Lickorish, and Kirby, is whether every linear subdivision of the d-simplex is simplicially collapsible. The answer is known to be positive for d<4. We solve the problem up to one subdivision, by proving that any linear subdivision of any polytope is simplicially collapsible after at most one barycentric subdivision. Furthermore, we prove that any linear subdivision of any star-shaped polyhedron in $\mathbb{R}^d$ is simplicially collapsible after d-2 derived subdivisions at most. This presents progress on an old question by Goodrick.

Toric chordality

We study the geometric change of Chow cohomology classes in projective toric varieties under the Weil-McMullen dual of the intersection product with a Lefschetz element. Based on this, we introduce toric chordality, a generalization of graph chordality to higher skeleta of simplicial complexes with a coordinatization over characteristic 0, leading us to a far-reaching generalization of Kalai's work on applications of rigidity of frameworks to polytope theory. In contrast to "homological" chordality, the notion that is usually studied as a higher-dimensional analogue of graph chordality, we will show that toric chordality has several advantageous properties and applications. -- Most strikingly, we will see that toric chordality allows us to introduce a higher version of Dirac's propagation principle. -- Aside from the propagation theorem, we also study the interplay with the geometric properties of the simplicial chain complex of the underlying simplicial complex, culminating in a quantified version of the Stanley--Murai--Nevo generalized lower bound theorem. -- Finally, we apply our technique to give a simple proof of the generalized lower bound theorem in polytope theory and -- prove the balanced generalized lower bound conjecture of Klee and Novik.

Colorful simplicial depth, Minkowski sums, and generalized Gale transforms

The colorful simplicial depth of a collection of d+1 finite sets of points in Euclidean d-space is the number of choices of a point from each set such that the origin is contained in their convex hull. We use methods from combinatorial topology to prove a tight upper bound on the colorful simplicial depth. This implies a conjecture of Deza et al. (2006). Furthermore, we introduce colorful Gale transforms as a bridge between colorful configurations and Minkowski sums. Our colorful upper bound then yields a tight upper bound on the number of totally mixed facets of certain Minkowski sums of simplices. This resolves a conjecture of Burton (2003) in the theory of normal surfaces.

A Geometric Lower Bound Theorem

We resolve a conjecture of Kalai relating approximation theory of convex bodies by simplicial polytopes to the face numbers and primitive Betti numbers of these polytopes and their toric varieties. The proof uses higher notions of chordality. Further, for C^2-convex bodies, asymptotically tight lower bounds on the g-numbers of the approximating polytopes are given, in terms of their Hausdorff distance from the convex body.

An Alexander-type duality for valuations

We prove an Alexander-type duality for valuations for certain subcomplexes in the boundary of polyhedra. These strengthen and simplify results of Stanley (1974) and Miller-Reiner (2005). We give a generalization of Brion's theorem for this relative situation and we discuss the topology of the possible subcomplexes for which the duality relation holds.

Tight complexes in 3-space admit perfect discrete Morse functions

In 1967, Chillingworth proved that all convex simplicial 3-balls are collapsible. Using the classical notion of tightness, we generalize this to arbitrary manifolds: We show that all tight simplicial 3-manifolds admit some perfect discrete Morse function. We also strengthen Chillingworth's theorem by proving that all convex simplicial 3-balls are non-evasive. In contrast, we show that many non-evasive 3-balls are not convex.

Infinite curvature on typical convex surfaces

Solving a long-standing open question in convex geometry, we will show that typical convex surfaces contain points of infinite curvature in all tangent directions. To prove this, we use an easy curvature definition imitating the idea of Alexandrov spaces of bounded curvature, and show continuity properties for this notion. Along the way, we show a theorem for the approximation of convex surfaces by smooth surfaces.
