Isometries of Unit Spheres of SFS-Spaces and a Geometric Approach to Tingley's Problem

We investigate surjective isometries between the unit spheres of facially symmetric spaces and their interaction with the underlying facial structure. It is shown that such isometries preserve the essential geometric relations associated with symmetric faces, orthogonality, and geometric tripotents. In particular, a surjective sphere isometry induces a natural correspondence between the geometric tripotents of the underlying spaces and preserves the principal structural features determined by the Peirce decomposition. These results provide a geometric framework for studying linear extension problems for sphere isometries. As an application, we establish a positive solution of Tingley's problem for finite-dimensional real neutral strongly facially symmetric spaces satisfying the joint Peirce property. We also obtain an extension result for a wider class of real neutral strongly facially symmetric spaces admitting an appropriate approximation by finite-dimensional Peirce subspaces. In these settings, every surjective isometry between unit spheres extends uniquely to a surjective real-linear isometry of the ambient spaces. The results demonstrate that the facial and tripotent structures play a decisive role in the rigidity of spherical isometries.

Isometries of Haagerup--Schultz algebras

We establish a version of the classical results concerning descriptions of isometries on $C^*$-algebras and noncommutative $L_p$-spaces due to Kadison (1951) and Yeadon (1981) in the setting of Haagerup--Schultz algebras. Precisely, we show that (not necessarily surjective) isometries on such algebras are necessarily implemented by partial isometries and trace-preserving Jordan $^*$-monomorphisms.

Isometries on algebras of locally measurable operators

Let $LS(\mathcal{M})$ be the algebra of locally measurable operators affiliated with a von Neumann algebra $\mathcal{M}$, equipped with an $F$-norm defined via a dimension function and a probability measure. We prove that every bijective linear isometry between $LS(\mathcal{M})$ admits a canonical representation of the form $Φ(x)=wJ(x)$, where $w$ is a unitary element and $J$ is a Jordan $^*$-isomorphism, which extends classical results such as the Banach--Stone theorem and Kadison's theorem. Under several structural assumptions on the underlying von Neumann algebras (including all type $\mathrm{II}_\infty$ and type $\mathrm{III}$ algebras, and all factors, and algebras with atomless centers), we prove the one-to-one correspondence between the $F$-norm and the pair $(μ, D)$ of a probability measure and a dimension function, which fails for algebras with atomic centers.

Disjointness-preserving mappings on Calkin operator spaces and positive isometries

Let $E(\mathcal{M},τ)$ and $F(\mathcal{M},τ)$ be two Calkin operator spaces affiliated with a semifinite von Neumann algebra $\mathcal{M}$ equipped with a semifinite faithful normal trace $τ$. We show that if $\mathcal{M}$ is atomless, $τ$ is finite, and $E(v,τ)\not\subseteq F(\mathcal{M},τ)$, then every order-measure continuous and disjointness-preserving mapping $T:E(\mathcal{M},τ)\xrightarrow{\rm into} F(\mathcal{M},τ)$ is identical to the zero mapping, which establishes a noncommutative version of Abramovich's theorem. We also show that every positive isometry $T$ from a normed $\mathcal{M}$-bimodule $E(\mathcal{M},τ)$ of $τ$-measurable operators into another $F(\mathcal{M},τ)$ preserves disjointness provided that the norm of $F(\mathcal{M},τ)$ is strictly monotone. As an application, we obtain the general form of $T$, which extends and unifies several results due to Abramovich, de Jager, Conradie, Veksler and Sukochev et al. \cite{SV,HSZ20,Abra1991,vek,dC20}.

Rank metric isometries and determinant-preserving mappings on II$_1$-factors

We fully describe the general form of a linear (or conjugate-linear) rank metric isometry on the Murray--von Neumann algebra associated with a II$_1$-factor. As an application, we establish Frobenius' theorem in the setting of II$_1$-factors, by showing that every determinant-preserving linear bijection between two II$_1$-factors is necessarily an isomorphism or an anti-isomorphism. This confirms the Harris--Kadison conjecture (1996).

Local and $2$-local derivations of simple $n$-ary algebras

In the present paper, we prove that every local and $2$-local derivation of the complex finite-dimensional simple Filippov algebra is a derivation. As a corollary we have the description of all local and $2$-local derivations of complex finite-dimensional semisimple Filippov algebras. All local derivations of the ternary Malcev algebra $M_8$ are described. It is the first example of a finite-dimensional simple algebra that admits pure local derivations, i.e. algebra admits a local derivation which is not a derivation.

Local and $2$-local automorphisms of Cayley algebras

The present paper is devoted to the description of local and 2-local automorphisms on Cayley algebras over an arbitrary field $\mathbb{F}$. Given a Cayley algebra $\mathcal{C}$ with norm $n$, let $O(\mathcal{C},n)$ be the corresponding orthogonal group. We prove that the group of all local automorphisms of $\mathcal{C}$ coincides with the group $\{φ\in O(\mathcal{C},n)\mid φ(1)=1\}.$ Further we prove that the behavior of 2-local automorphisms depends on the Cayley algebra being split or division. Every 2-local automorphism on the split Cayley algebra is an automorphism, i.e. they form the exceptional Lie group $G_2(\mathbb{F})$ if $\textrm{char}\mathbb{F}\neq 2,3$. On the other hand, on division Cayley algebras over a field $\mathbb{F}$, the groups of 2-local automorphisms and local automorphisms coincide, and they are isomorphic to the group $\{φ\in O(\mathcal{C},n)\mid φ(1)=1\}.$

Local and $2$-local derivations of Cayley algebras

The present paper is devoted to the description of local and $2$-local derivations on Cayley algebras over an arbitrary field $\mathbb{F}$. Given a Cayley algebra $\mathcal{C}$ with norm $\mathfrak{n}$, let $\mathcal{C}_0$ be its subspace of trace $0$ elements. We prove that the space of all local derivations of $\mathcal{C}$ coincides with the Lie algebra $\{d\in (\mathcal{C},\mathfrak{n}) | d(1)=0\}$ which is isomorphic to the orthogonal Lie algebra $(\mathcal{C}_0,\mathfrak{n})$. Further we prove that, surprisingly, the behavior of $2$-local derivations depends on the Cayley algebra being split or division. Every $2$-local derivation on the split Cayley algebra is a derivation, i.e. they form the exceptional Lie algebra $\mathfrak{g}_2(\mathbb{F})$ if $\textrm{char}\mathbb{F}\neq 2,3$. On the other hand, on division Cayley algebras over a field $\mathbb{F}$, the sets of $2$-local derivations and local derivations coincide, and they are isomorphic to the Lie algebra $(\mathcal{C}_0,\mathfrak{n})$. As a corollary we obtain descriptions of local and $2$-local derivations of the seven dimensional simple non-Lie Malcev algebras over fields of characteristic $\neq 2,3$.

Ring isomorphisms of $\ast$-subalgebras of Murray-von Neumann factors

The present paper is devoted to study of ring isomorphisms of $\ast$-subalgebras of Murray--von Neumann factors. Let $\cM,$ $\cN$ be von Neumann factors of type II$_1,$ and let $S(\cM),$ $S(\cN)$ be the $\ast$-algebras of all measurable operators affiliated with $\cM$ and $ \cN,$ respectively. Suppose that $\cA\subset S(\cM),$ $\cB\subset S(\cN)$ are their $\ast$-subalgebras such that $\cM\subset \cA,$ $\cN\subset \cB.$ We prove that for every ring isomorphism $Φ: \cA \to \cB$ there exist a positive invertible element $a \in \cB$ with $a^{-1}\in \cB$ and a real $\ast$-isomorphism $Ψ: \cM \to \cN$ (which extends to a real $\ast$-isomorphism from $\cA$ onto $\cB$) such that $Φ(x) = aΨ(x)a^{-1}$ for all $x \in \cA.$ In particular, $Φ$ is real-linear and continuous in the measure topology. In particular, noncommutative Arens algebras and noncommutative $\cL_{log}$-algebras associated with von Neumann factors of type II$_1$ satisfy the above conditions and the main Theorem implies the automatic continuity of their ring isomorphisms in the corresponding metrics. We also present an example of a $\ast$-subalgebra in $S(\cM),$ which shows that the condition $\cM\subset \cA$ is essential in the above mentioned result.

Non-existence of translation-invariant derivations on algebras of measurable functions

Let $S(0,1)$ be the $*$-algebra of all classes of Lebesgue measurable functions on the unit interval $(0,1)$ and let $(\mathcal{A},\left\|\cdot \right\|_\mathcal{A})$ be a complete symmetric $Δ$-normed $*$-subalgebra of $S(0,1)$, in which simple functions are dense, e.g., $L_\infty (0,1)$, $L_{\log}(0,1)$, $S(0,1)$ and the Arens algebra $L^ω(0,1)$ equipped with their natural $Δ$-norms. We show that there exists no non-trivial derivation $ δ: \mathcal{A} \to S(0,1)$ commuting with all dyadic translations of the unit interval. Let $\mathcal{M}$ be a type $II$ (or $I_\infty$) von Neumann algebra, $\mathcal{A}$ be its abelian von Neumann subalgebra, let $S(\mathcal{M})$ be the algebra of all measurable operators affiliated with $\mathcal{M}$. We show that any non-trivial derivation $δ:\mathcal{A} \to S(\mathcal{A})$ can not be extended to a derivation on $S(\mathcal{M})$. In particular, we answer an untreated question in \cite{BKS1}.

2-Local automorphisms on $AW^\ast$-algebras

The paper is devoted to 2-local automorphisms on $AW^\ast$-algebras. Using the technique of matrix algebras over a unital Banach algebra we prove that any 2-local automorphism on an arbitrary $AW^\ast$-algebra without finite type~I direct summands is a global automorphism.

Notes on derivations of Murray--von Neumann algebras

Let $\mathcal{M}$ be a type II$_1$ von Neumann factor and let $S(\mathcal{M})$ be the associated Murray-von Neumann algebra of all measurable operators affiliated to $\mathcal{M}.$ We extend a result of Kadison and Liu \cite{KL} by showing that any derivation from $S(\mathcal{M})$ into an $\mathcal{M}$-bimodule $\mathcal{B}\subsetneq S(\mathcal{M})$ is trivial. In the special case, when $\mathcal{M}$ is the hyperfinite type II$_1-$factor $\mathcal{R}$, we introduce the algebra $AD(\mathcal{R})$, a noncommutative analogue of the algebra of all almost everywhere approximately differentiable functions on $[0,1]$ and show that it is a proper subalgebra of $S(\mathcal{R})$. This algebra is strictly larger than the corresponding ring of continuous geometry introduced by von Neumann. Further, we establish that the classical approximate derivative on (classes of) Lebesgue measurable functions on $[0,1]$ admits an extension to a derivation from $AD(\mathcal{R})$ into $S(\mathcal{R})$, which fails to be spatial. Finally, we show that for a Cartan masa $\mathcal{A}$ in a hyperfinite II$_1-$factor $\mathcal{R}$ there exists a derivation $δ$ from $\mathcal{A}$ into $S(\mathcal{A})$ which does not admit an extension up to a derivation from $\mathcal{R}$ to $S(\mathcal{R}).$

Description of facially symmetric spaces with unitary tripotents

We give a description of finite-dimensional real neutral strongly facially symmetric spaces with the property JP. We also prove that if \(Z\) is a real neutral strongly facially symmetric with an unitary tripotents, then the space \(Z\) is isometrically isomorphic to the space \(L_1(Ω,Σ, μ),\) where \((Ω,Σ, μ)\) is a measure space having the direct sum property.

Local automorphisms on finite-dimensional Lie and Leibniz algebras

We prove that a linear mapping on the algebra \(\mathfrak{sl}_n\) of all trace zero complex matrices is a local automorphism if and only if it is an automorphism or an anti-automorphism. We also show that a linear mapping on a simple Leibniz algebra of the form \(\mathfrak{sl}_n\dot +\mathcal{I}\) is a local automorphism if and only if it is an automorphism. We give examples of finite-dimensional nilpotent Lie algebras \(\mathcal{L}\) with \(\dim \mathcal{L} \geq 3\) which admit local automorphisms which are not automorphisms.
