The Lunar Farside Transients and Technology Telescope (LFT3) Mission

We present here an overview of the Lunar Farside Transients and Technology Telescope (LFT3) mission to take advantage of the extremely clear radio frequency environment on the lunar farside. Radio observations performed from the lunar farside effectively and fully mitigate two unavoidable limitations of terrestrial-based radio telescopes: (i) the prevalence of interfering radio transmitters from human activity; and (ii) the impact of the Earth's ionosphere. However, in the era of cost-effective access to the Moon, there are many scheduled lunar missions over the next few years, and the window of opportunity to perform radio interference-free observations from the lunar farside is closing fast. LFT3 is the only mission proposed to go to the lunar farside and exploit this unique opportunity in human history. LFT3 will observe in an uncluttered radio environment to conduct unambiguous technosignature searches, transient surveys, solar physics and planetary emissions studies, spectral line observations, and cosmological science observations. LFT3 will provide an important incumbent use of the microwave spectrum for cislunar radio astronomy.

Generalized Friis Transmission Formula Using Active Antenna Available Power and Unnamed Power Gain

We use the concept of active antenna available power to derive a generalization of the Friis transmission formula for multiport antenna systems. With beamformer weights chosen such that the array patterns are the same when transmitting and receiving, the active antenna available power at the receiving antenna divided by the input power at the transmitter is symmetric under link direction reversal in the near field as well as the far field. These results generalize the Friis transmission formula to beamformed multiport antenna systems in an arbitrary reciprocal propagation environment.

Performance of Polarimetric Beamformers for Phased Array Radio Telescopes

The results of four recently introduced beamforming schemes for phased array systems are discussed, each of which is capable to provide high sensitivity and accurate polarimetric performance of array-based radio telescopes. Ideally, a radio polarimeter should recover the actual polarization state of the celestial source, and thus compensate for unwanted polarization degradation effects which are intrinsic to the instrument. In this paper, we compare the proposed beamforming schemes through an example of a practical phased array system (APERTIF prototype) and demonstrate that the optimal beamformer, the max-SLNR beamformer, the eigenvector beamformer, and the bi-scalar beamformer are sensitivity equivalent but lead to different polarization state solutions, some of which are sub-optimal.

Phased Array Feed Calibration, Beamforming and Imaging

Phased array feeds (PAFs) for reflector antennas offer the potential for increased reflector field of view and faster survey speeds. To address some of the development challenges that remain for scientifically useful PAFs, including calibration and beamforming algorithms, sensitivity optimization, and demonstration of wide field of view imaging, we report experimental results from a 19 element room temperature L-band PAF mounted on the Green Bank 20-Meter Telescope. Formed beams achieved an aperture efficiency of 69% and system noise temperature of 66 K. Radio camera images of several sky regions are presented. We investigate the noise performance and sensitivity of the system as a function of elevation angle with statistically optimal beamforming and demonstrate cancelation of radio frequency interference sources with adaptive spatial filtering.
