Anomalous Transport and Explicit Symmetry Breaking in Holography

We consider a holographic Einstein-Maxwell model in five dimensions with pure gauge and mixed gauge-gravitational Chern-Simons terms to study anomaly-induced transport in the presence of explicit symmetry breaking. We include the full backreaction of the scalar field and gauge fields on the metric and compute the anomalous transport coefficients using Kubo formulae involving charge and energy current correlators. Our findings reveal that, in the presence of explicit symmetry breaking, anomaly-induced transport phenomena can extend beyond anomalous currents and affect the non-anomalous sector as well. The transport coefficients exhibit a clear dependence on the symmetry-breaking mass parameter, highlighting the interplay between quantum anomalies and explicit symmetry breaking in holographic systems.

Pseudospectra of holographic diffusion: gauge fields breaking free from the master scalar

We study pseudospectra of quasinormal frequencies and complex linear momenta of a U(1) gauge field in a Schwarzschild black branes in Anti-de Sitter. We present a novel approach for computing the pseudospectra which uses directly the gauge field variables and contrast it to a conventional master scalar field approach. Upon clarifying a subtlety in the energy norm of the master scalar we show that the pseudospectra of both approaches conincide. In the hydrodynamic regime we find that the hydrodynamic quasinormal frequency, the diffusive mode, is spectrally stable to a very good approximation. On the other hand hydrodynamic complex linear momenta show enhanced spectral instability as a consequence of a pole-collision at zero frequency.

Anomaly induced transport from symmetry breaking in holography

We study the transport properties of relativistic fluids induced by quantum anomalies in presence of explicit symmetry breaking. To this end we consider a holographic Einstein-Maxwell model in 5 dimensions with pure gauge and a mixed gauge-gravitational Chern-Simons terms, coupled with a scalar field. To study the chiral vortical effects and the energy transport sector, apart from the chiral magnetic effects, we have considered the full backreaction of the gauge field on the metric. We have studied the anomalous effects by using Kubo formulae involving correlators of the charged currents and the energy current. Our findings reveal that, in the presence of explicit symmetry breaking, anomaly-induced transport phenomena can extend beyond anomalous currents and affect non-anomalous sectors as well. In particular, we find that all the conductivities display a distinct sensitivity to the mass parameter controlling the symmetry breaking, thus reflecting the interplay between anomaly coefficients and explicit symmetry breaking terms. These findings highlight the role played by pure gauge and mixed gauge-gravitational anomalies in holographic transport, and their importance for strongly coupled systems with broken symmetries.

A new scale anomaly in Dirac matter

The dynamics of Dirac semimetals is modeled at low energies by the massless Dirac Hamiltonian with the Fermi velocity replacing the velocity of light. The classical action is scale invariant. In 3D materials, Coulomb interactions induce a conformal anomaly associated to the charge renormalization already known in quantum field theory. In this work, we describe a new conformal anomaly induced by the running of the Fermi velocity that applies to Dirac semimetals in two and three dimensions. The case of graphene is particularly interesting. We analyze the anomaly and explore its thermodynamic and hydrodynamic consequences. The anomaly modifies the propagation speed of hydrodynamic sound waves, alters the thermodynamic equation of state, and induces a non-vanishing bulk viscosity proportional to the beta function of the Fermi velocity.

Strongly Coupled PT-Symmetric Models in Holography

Non-Hermitian quantum field theories are a promising tool to study open quantum systems. These theories preserve unitarity if PT-symmetry is respected, and in that case an equivalent Hermitian description exists via the so-called Dyson map. Generically, PT-symmetric non-Hermitian theories can also feature phases where PT-symmetry is broken and unitarity is lost. We review the construction of holographic duals to strongly coupled PT-symmetric quantum field theories and the study of their phase diagram. We next focus on spacetime-dependent non-Hermitian couplings: non-Hermitian quenches and lattices. They violate the null energy condition in the gravity dual. The lattices realize phases supporting an imaginary current that breaks PT-symmetry spontaneously. Remarkably, these non-Hermitian lattices flow to a PT-symmetric fixed point in the IR.

Hydrodynamic Modes of Holographic Weyl Semimetals

We study the quasinormal modes of a holographic model of a Weyl semimetal. The model features quantum phase transition between a topological phase and a trivial phase. We put particular emphasis on the hydrodynamic modes and show that a hydrodynamic mode is present only in the topological Weyl semimetal phase.

Pseudospectra of complex momentum modes

We initiate the study of stability and pseudospectra of complex momentum modes of asymptotically anti-de Sitter black holes. Similar to quasinormal modes, these can be defined as the poles of the holographic Green's function, albeit for real frequency and complex momentum. Their pseudospectra are in stark contrast to the pseudospectra of quasinormal modes of AdS black holes. Contrary to the case of quasinormal mode pseudospectra, the resolvent is well-defined, and the numerical approximation shows fast convergence. At zero frequency, complex momentum modes are stable normal modes of a Hermitian operator. Even for large frequencies, they show only comparatively mild spectral instability. We also find that local potential perturbations cannot destabilize the lowest complex momentum mode.

Pseudospectra of Quasinormal Modes and Holography

The holographic duality (also known as AdS/CFT correspondence or gauge/gravity duality) postulates that strongly coupled quantum field theories can be described in a dual way in asymptotically Anti-de Sitter space. One of the cornerstones of this duality is the description of thermal states as black holes with asymptotically Anti-de Sitter boundary conditions. This idea has led to valuable insights into such fields as transport theory and relativistic hydrodynamics. In this context, the quasinormal modes of such black holes play a decisive role and therefore their stability properties are of upmost interest for the holographic duality. We review recent results using the method of pseudospectra.

Holographic $a$-functions and Boomerang RG Flows

We use the radial null energy condition to construct a monotonic $a$-function for a certain type of non-relativistic holographic RG flows. We test our $a$-function in three different geometries that feature a Boomerang RG flow, characterized by a domain wall between two AdS spaces with the same AdS radius, but with different (and sometimes directions dependent) speeds of light. We find that the $a$-function monotonically decreases and goes to a constant in the asymptotic regimes of the geometry. Using the holographic dictionary in this asymptotic AdS spaces, we find that the $a$-function not only reads the fixed point central charge but also the speed of light, suggesting what the correct RG charge might be for non-relativistic RG flows.

Pole-skipping as order parameter to probe a quantum critical point

The holographic system described by Einstein-Maxwell-Chern-Simons dynamics in the bulk of AdS exhibits a chiral magnetic effect and a quantum critical point. Through numerical calculations, we find that the butterfly velocity can serve as a new identifier for the quantum critical point in this system. We show that the critical point is the point at which the butterfly velocity is equal to the speed of light in the direction of the magnetic field, while in the opposite direction the butterfly propagation vanishes. Furthermore, by studying the pole-skipping points of the response function of the operator dual to the tensor part of the metric perturbation in the bulk, we discover a set of order parameters that distinguish the two states of the system near the quantum critical point. Each of these order parameters is the sum of the absolute values of the real parts of momentum at all pole-skipping points associated with a particular frequency. This quantity vanishes in the disordered state while taking a positive value in the ordered state. In addition, our results confirm the idea that the chiral magnetic effect can manifest macroscopically through quantum chaos.

Pseudospectra of Holographic Quasinormal Modes

Quasinormal modes and frequencies are the eigenvectors and eigenvalues of a non-Hermitian differential operator. They hold crucial significance in the physics of black holes. The analysis of quasinormal modes of black holes in asymptotically Anti-de Sitter geometries plays also a key role in the study of strongly coupled quantum many-body systems via gauge/gravity duality. In contrast to normal Sturm-Liouville operators, the eigenvalues of non-Hermitian (and non-normal) operators generally exhibit instability under small perturbations. This research focuses on the stability analysis of quasinormal frequencies pertaining to asymptotically planar AdS black holes, employing pseudospectrum analysis. Specifically, we concentrate on the pseudospectra of scalar and transverse gauge fields, shedding light on their relevance within the framework of gauge/gravity duality.

Anomalous transport from geometry

We revisit the relation between black hole geometries and chiral transport. Integrating the anomaly equation in a black hole geometry allows to derive the chiral transport coefficients for the thermal gas far from the horizon. The key ingredient is to impose vanishing of the covariant current on the horizon. We extend the method to include the usual gauge anomaly for charged black holes and to weak magnetic fields. This allows to derive the full set of transport coefficients describing the chiral magnetic and chiral vortical effects.

Non-Hermitian Quantum Quenches in Holography

The notion of non-Hermitian PT symmetric quantum theory has recently been generalized to the gauge/gravity duality. We study the evolution of such non-Hermitian holographic field theories when the couplings are varied with time with particular emphasis on the question non-unitary time vs. unitary time evolution. We show that a non-unitary time evolution in the dual quantum theory corresponds to a violation of the Null Energy Condition (NEC) in the bulk of the asymptotically AdS spacetime. We find that upon varying the non-Hermitian coupling the horizon of a bulk AdS black hole shrinks. On the other hand varying the Hermitian coupling in the presence of a constant non-Hermitian coupling still violates the NEC but results in a growing horizon. We also show that by introducing a non-Hermitian gauge field the time evolution can be made unitary, e.g. the NEC in the bulk is obeyed, and an exactly equivalent purely Hermitian description can be given.

On chiral responses to geometric torsion

We show that geometric torsion does not lead to new chiral dissipationless transport effects. Instead apparent response to torsion can be viewed as a manifestation of the chiral vortical effect.

A Holographic Superfluid Symphony

We study the hydrodynamic excitations of backreacted holographic superfluids by computing the full set of quasinormal modes (QNMs) at finite momentum and matching them to the existing hydrodynamic theory of superfluids. Additionally, we analyze the behavior of the low-energy excitations in real frequency and complex momentum, going beyond the standard QNM picture. Finally, we carry out a novel type of study of the model by computing the support of the hydrodynamic modes across the phase diagram. We achieve this by determining the support of the corresponding QNMs on the different operators in the dual theory, both in complex frequency and complex momentum space. From the support, we are able to reconstruct the hydrodynamic dispersion relations using the hydrodynamic constitutive relations. Our analysis rules out a role-reversal phenomenon between first and second sound in this model, contrary to results obtained in a weakly coupled field theory framework.

Thermal transport, geometry, and anomalies

The relation between thermal transport and gravity was highlighted in the seminal work by Luttinger in 1964, and has been extensively developed to understand thermal transport, most notably the thermal Hall effect. Here we review the novel concepts that relate thermal transport, the geometry of space-time and quantum field theory anomalies. We give emphasis to the cross-pollination between emergent ideas in condensed matter, notably Weyl and Dirac semimetals, and the understanding of gravitational and scale anomalies stemming from high-energy physics. We finish by relating to recent experimental advances and presenting a perspective of several open problems.

Is the Chiral Magnetic Effect fast enough?

It depends: While we find within holography that the lifetime of the magnetic field for collider energies like the ones achieved at RHIC is long enough to build up the chiral magnetic current, the lifetime of the magnetic field at LHC seems to be too short. We study the real time evolution of the chiral magnetic effect out-of-equilibrium in strongly coupled holographic gauge theories. We consider the backreaction of the magnetic field onto the geometry and monitor pressure and chiral magnetic current. Our findings show that generically at small magnetic field the pressure builds up faster than the chiral magnetic current whereas at strong magnetic field the opposite is true. At large charge we also find that equilibration is delayed significantly due to long lived oscillations. We also match the parameters of our model to QCD parameters and draw lessons of possible relevance to the realization of the chiral magnetic effect in heavy ion collisions. In particular, we find an equilibration time of about $\sim0.35$ fm/c in presence of the chiral anomaly for plasma temperatures of order $T\sim300-400$ MeV.

Detect Axial Gauge Fields with a Calorimeter

Torsional strain in Weyl semimetals excites a unidirectional chiral density wave propagating in the direction of the torsional vector. This gapless excitation, named the chiral sound wave, is generated by a particular realization of the axial anomaly via the triple-axial (AAA) anomalous diagram. We show that the presence of the torsion-generated chiral sound leads to a linear behavior of the specific heat of a Weyl semimetal and to an enhancement of the thermal conductivty at experimentally accessible temperatures. We also demonstrate that such an elastic twist lowers the temperature of the sample, thus generating a new, anomalous type of elasto-calorific effect. Measurements of these thermodynamical effects will provide experimental verification of the exotic triple-axial anomaly as well as the reality of the elastic pseudomagnetic fields in Weyl semimetals.
