Zero-one law of orbital limit points for weighted shifts

Chan and Seceleanu have shown that if a weighted shift operator on $\ell^p(\mathbb{Z})$, $1\leq p<\infty$, admits an orbit with a non-zero limit point then it is hypercyclic. We present a new proof of this result that allows to extend it to very general sequence spaces. In a similar vein we show that, in many sequence spaces, a weighted shift with a non-zero weakly sequentially recurrent vector has a dense set of such vectors; but an example on $c_0(\mathbb{Z})$ shows that such an operator is not necessarily hypercyclic. On the other hand, we obtain that weakly sequentially hypercyclic weighted shifts are hypercyclic. Chan and Seceleanu have moreover shown that if an adjoint multiplication operator on a Bergman space admits an orbit with a non-zero limit point then it is hypercyclic. We extend this result to very general spaces of analytic functions, including the Hardy spaces.

Kitai's Criterion for Composition Operators

We present a general and natural framework to study the dynamics of composition operators on spaces of measurable functions, in which we then reconsider the characterizations for hypercyclic and mixing composition operators obtained by Bayart, Darji and Pires. We show that the notions of hypercyclicity and weak mixing coincide in this context and, if the system is dissipative, the recurrent composition operators agree with the hypercyclic ones. We also give a characterization for invertible composition operators satisfying Kitai's Criterion, and we construct an example of a mixing composition operator not satisfying Kitai's Criterion. For invertible dissipative systems with bounded distortion we show that composition operators satisfying Kitai's Criterion coincide with the mixing operators.

A note on the Wiman-Valiron inequality

The Wiman-Valiron inequality relates the maximum modulus of an analytic function to its Taylor coefficients via the maximum term. After a short overview of the known results, we obtain a general version of this inequality that seems to have been overlooked in the literature so far. We end the paper with an open problem.

Rate of growth of random analytic functions, with an application to linear dynamics

We obtain Wiman-Valiron type inequalities for random entire functions and for random analytic functions on the unit disk that improve a classical result of Erdős and Rényi and recent results of Kuryliak and Skaskiv. Our results are then applied to linear dynamics: we obtain rates of growth, outside some exceptional set, for analytic functions that are frequently hypercyclic for an arbitrary chaotic weighted backward shift.

Chaotic weighted shifts on directed trees

We study the dynamical behaviour of weighted backward shift operators defined on sequence spaces over a directed tree. We provide a characterization of chaos on very general Fréchet sequence spaces in terms of the existence of a large supply of periodic points, or of fixed points. In the special case of the space $\ell^p$, $1\leq p<\infty$, or the space $c_0$ over the tree, we provide a characterization directly in terms of the weights of the shift operators. It has turned out that these characterizations involve certain generalized continued fractions that are introduced in this paper. Special attention is given to weighted backward shifts with symmetric weights, in particular to Rolewicz operators. In an appendix, we complement our previous work by characterizing hypercyclic and mixing weighted backward shifts on very general Fréchet sequence spaces over a tree. Also, some of our results have a close link with potential theory on flows over trees; the link is provided by the notion of capacity, as we explain in an epilogue.

Frequently recurrent operators

Motivated by a recent investigation of Costakis et al. on the notion of recurrence in linear dynamics, we study various stronger forms of recurrence for linear operators, in particular that of frequent recurrence. We study, among other things, the relationship between a type of recurrence and the corresponding notion of hypercyclicity, the influence of power boundedness, and the interplay between recurrence and spectral properties. We obtain, in particular, Ansari- and Léon-Müller-type theorems for $\mathcal{F}$-recurrence under very weak assumptions on the Furstenberg family $\mathcal{F}$. This allows us, as a by-product, to deduce Ansari- and Léon-Müller-type theorems for $\mathcal{F}$-hypercyclicity.

Dynamics of weighted shifts on directed trees

We study the dynamical behaviour of weighted shifts defined on sequence spaces of a directed tree. In particular, we characterize their boundedness as well as when they are hypercyclic, weakly mixing and mixing.

Algebras of frequently hypercyclic vectors

We show that the multiples of the backward shift operator on the spaces $\ell_{p}$, $1\leq p<\infty$, or $c_{0}$, when endowed with coordinatewise multiplication, do not possess frequently hypercyclic algebras. More generally, we characterize the existence of algebras of $\mathcal{A}$-hypercyclic vectors for these operators. We also show that the differentiation operator on the space of entire functions, when endowed with the Hadamard product, does not possess frequently hypercyclic algebras. On the other hand, we show that for any frequently hypercyclic operator $T$ on any Banach space, $FHC(T)$ is algebrable for a suitable product, and in some cases it is even strongly algebrable.

Algebrability of the set of hypercyclic vectors for backward shift operators

We study the existence of algebras of hypercyclic vectors for weighted backward shifts on Fréchet sequence spaces that are algebras when endowed with coordinatewise multiplication or with the Cauchy product. As a particular case we obtain that the sets of hypercyclic vectors for Rolewicz's and MacLane's operators are algebrable.

Frequently hypercyclic bilateral shifts

It is not known if the inverse of a frequently hypercyclic bilateral weighted shift on $c_0(\mathbb{Z})$ is again frequently hypercyclic. We show that the corresponding problem for upper frequent hypercyclicity has a positive answer. We characterise, more generally, when bilateral weighted shifts on Banach sequence spaces are (upper) frequently hypercyclic.

Upper frequent hypercyclicity and related notions

Enhancing a recent result of Bayart and Ruzsa we obtain a Birkhoff-type characterization of upper frequently hypercyclic operators and a corresponding Upper Frequent Hypercyclicity Criterion. As an application we characterize upper frequently hypercyclic weighted backward shifts on sequence spaces, which in turn allows us to come up with various counter-examples in linear dynamics that are substantially simpler than those previously obtained in the literature. More generally, we introduce the notion of upper Furstenberg families $\mathcal{A}$ and show that our main results hold for $\mathcal{A}$-hypercyclic operators with respect to such families.
