Heat Flow with Dirichlet Boundary Conditions via Optimal Transport and Gluing of Metric Measure Spaces

We introduce the transportation-annihilation distance $W_p^\sharp$ between subprobabilities and derive contraction estimates with respect to this distance for the heat flow with homogeneous Dirichlet boundary conditions on an open set in a metric measure space. We also deduce the Bochner inequality for the Dirichlet Laplacian as well as gradient estimates for the associated Dirichlet heat flow. For the Dirichlet heat flow, moreover, we establish a gradient flow interpretation within a suitable space of charged probabilities. In order to prove this, we will work with the \emph{doubling} of the open set, the space obtained by gluing together two copies of it along the boundary.

On gluing Alexandrov spaces with lower Ricci curvature bounds

In this paper we prove that in the class of metric measure spaces with Alexandrov curvature bounded from below the Riemannian curvature-dimension condition $RCD(K,N)$ with $K\in \mathbb{R}$ and $N\in [1,\infty)$ is preserved under doubling and gluing constructions.

Curvature-dimension conditions for diffusions under time change

We derive precise transformation formulas for synthetic lower Ricci bounds under time change. More precisely, for local Dirichlet forms we study how the curvature-dimension condition in the sense of Bakry-Emery will transform under time change. Similarly, for metric measure spaces we study how the curvature-dimension condition in the sense of Lott-Sturm-Villani will transform under time change.

Optimal transport, gradient estimates, and pathwise Brownian coupling on spaces with variable Ricci bounds

Given a metric measure space $(X,\mathsf{d},\mathfrak{m})$ and a lower semicontinuous, lower bounded function $k\colon X\to\mathbb{R}$, we prove the equivalence of the synthetic approaches to Ricci curvature at $x\in X$ being bounded from below by $k(x)$ in terms of $\bullet$ the Bakry-Émery estimate $ΔΓ(f)/2 - Γ(f,Δf) \geq k\,Γ(f)$ in an appropriate weak formulation, and $\bullet$ the curvature-dimension condition $\mathrm{CD}(k,\infty)$ in the sense Lott-Sturm-Villani with variable $k$. Moreover, for all $p\in(1,\infty)$, these properties hold if and only if the perturbed $p$-transport cost \begin{equation*} W_p^{\underline{k}}(μ_1,μ_2,t):=\inf_{(\mathsf{b}^1,\mathsf{b}^2)} \mathbb{E}\Big[\mathrm{e}^{\int_0^{2t} p \underline{k}\left(\mathsf{b}^1_{r}, \mathsf{b}^2_{r}\right)/2\,\mathrm{d} r} \mathsf{d}^p\!\left(\mathsf{b}^1_{2t},\mathsf{b}^2_{2t} \right)\!\Big]^{1/p} \end{equation*} is nonincreasing in $t$. The infimum here is taken over pairs of coupled Brownian motions $\mathsf{b}^1$ and $\mathsf{b}^2$ on $X$ with given initial distributions $μ_1$ and $μ_2$, respectively, and $\underline{k}(x,y) := \inf_γ\int_0^1 k(γ_s)\,\mathrm{d} s$ denotes the "average" of $k$ along geodesics $γ$ connecting $x$ and $y$. Furthermore, for any pair of initial distributions $μ_1$ and $μ_2$ on $X$, we prove the existence of a pair of coupled Brownian motions $\mathsf{b}^1$ and $\mathsf{b}^2$ such that a.s. for every $s,t\in[0,\infty)$ with $s\leq t$, we have \begin{equation*} \mathsf{d}\!\left(\mathsf{b}_t^1,\mathsf{b}_t^2\right)\leq \mathrm{e}^{-\int_s^t \underline{k}\left(\mathsf{b}_r^1,\mathsf{b}_r^2\right)/2\,\mathrm{d} r} \mathsf{d}\!\left(\mathsf{b}_s^1,\mathsf{b}_s^2\right)\!. \end{equation*}

Rigidity of cones with bounded Ricci curvature

We show that the only metric measure space with the structure of an $N$-cone and with two-sided synthetic Ricci bounds is the Euclidean space ${\mathbb R}^{N+1}$ for $N$ integer. This is based on a novel notion of Ricci curvature upper bounds for metric measure spaces given in terms of the short time asymtotic of the heat kernel in the $L^2$-transport distance. Moreover, we establish a beautiful rigidity results of independent interest which characterize the $N$-dimensional standard sphere ${\mathbb S}^N$ as the unique minimizer of $$\int_X\int_X \cos d (x,y)\, m(d y)\,m(d x)$$ among all metric measure spaces with dimension bounded above by $N$ and Ricci curvature bounded below by $N-1$.

Gradient Flows for Semiconvex Functions on Metric Measure Spaces - Existence, Uniqueness and Lipschitz Continuity

Given any continuous, lower bounded and $κ$-convex function $V$ on a metric measure space $(X,d,m)$ which is infinitesimally Hilbertian and satisfies some synthetic lower bound for the Ricci curvature in the sense of Lott-Sturm-Villani, we prove existence and uniqueness for the (downward) gradient flow for $V$. Moreover, we prove Lipschitz continuity of the flow w.r.t. the starting point $d(x_t,x'_t)\le e^{-κ\, t} d(x_0,x_0').$

Heat Flows on Time-dependent Metric Measure Spaces and Super-Ricci Flows

We study the heat equation on time-dependent metric measure spaces (as well as the dual and the adjoint heat equation) and prove existence, uniqueness and regularity. Of particular interest are properties which characterize the underlying space as a super Ricci flow as previously introduced by the second author. Our main result yields the equivalence of (i) dynamic convexity of the Boltzmann entropy on the (time-dependent) $L^2$-Wasserstein space; (ii) monotonicity of $L^2$-Kantorovich-Wasserstein distances under the dual heat flow acting on probability measures (backward in time); (iii) gradient estimates for the heat flow acting on functions (forward in time); (iv) a Bochner inequality involving the time-derivative of the metric. Moreover, we characterize the heat flow on functions as the unique forward EVI-flow for the (time-dependent) energy in $L^2$-Hilbert space and the dual heat flow on probability measures as the unique backward EVI-flow for the (time-dependent) Boltzmann entropy in $L^2$-Wasserstein space.

Neumann heat flow and gradient flow for the entropy on non-convex domains

For large classes of non-convex subsets $Y$ in ${\mathbb R}^n$ or in Riemannian manifolds $(M,g)$ or in RCD-spaces $(X,d,m)$ we prove that the gradient flow for the Boltzmann entropy on the restricted metric measure space $(Y,d_Y,m_Y)$ exists - despite the fact that the entropy is not semiconvex - and coincides with the heat flow on $Y$ with Neumann boundary conditions.

Remarks about Synthetic Upper Ricci Bounds for Metric Measure Spaces

We discuss various characterizations of synthetic upper Ricci bounds for metric measure spaces in terms of heat flow, entropy and optimal transport. In particular, we present a characterization in terms of semiconcavity of the entropy along certain Wasserstein geodesics which is stable under convergence of mm-spaces. And we prove that a related characterization is equivalent to an asymptotic lower bound on the growth of the Wasseretein distance between heat flows. For weighted Riemannian manifolds, the crucial result will be a precise uniform two-sided bound for \begin{eqnarray*}\frac{d}{dt}\Big|_{t=0}W\big(\hat P_tδ_x,\hat P_tδ_y\big)\end{eqnarray*} in terms of the mean value of the Bakry-Emery Ricci tensor $\mathrm{Ric}+\mathrm{Hess}\, f$ along the minimizing geodesic from $x$ to $y$ and an explicit correction term depending on the bound for the curvature along this curve.

Super-Ricci Flows for Metric Measure Spaces

We introduce the notions of `super-Ricci flows' and `Ricci flows' for time-dependent families of metric measure spaces $(X,d_t,m_t)_{t\in I}$. The former property is proven to be stable under suitable space-time versions of mGH-convergence. Uniformly bounded families of super-Ricci flows are compact. In the spirit of the synthetic lower Ricci bounds of Lott-Sturm-Villani for static metric measure spaces, the defining property for super-Ricci flows is the `dynamic convexity' of the Boltzmann entropy ${\mathrm Ent}(.|m_t)$ regarded as a functions on the time-dependent geodesic space $({\mathcal P}(X),W_t)_{t\in I}$. For Ricci flows, in addition a nearly dynamic concavity of the Boltzmann entropy is requested. Alternatively, super-Ricci flows will be studied in the framework of the $Γ$-calculus of Bakry-Émery-Ledoux and equivalence to gradient estimates will be derived. For both notions of super-Ricci flows, also enforced versions involving an `upper dimension bound' $N$ will be presented.

Ricci Tensor for Diffusion Operators and Curvature-Dimension Inequalities under Conformal Transformations and Time Changes

Within the $Γ_2$-calculus of Bakry and Ledoux, we define the Ricci tensor induced by a diffusion operator, we deduce precise formulas for its behavior under drift transformation, time change and conformal transformation, and we derive new transformation results for the curvature-dimension conditions of Bakry-Emery as well as for those of Lott-Sturm-Villani. Our results are based on new identities and sharp estimates for the $N$-Ricci tensor and for the Hessian. In particular, we obtain Bochner's formula in the general setting.

Metric Measure Spaces with Variable Ricci Bounds and Couplings of Brownian Motions

The goal of this paper is twofold: we study metric measure spaces $(X,d,m)$ with variable lower bounds for the Ricci curvature and we study pathwise coupling of Brownian motions. Given any lower semicontinuous function $k:X\to \mathbb R$ we introduce the curvature-dimension condition $CD(k,\infty)$ which canonically extends the curvature-dimension condition $CD(K,\infty)$ of Lott-Sturm-Villani for constant $K\in \mathbb R$. For infinitesimally Hilbertian spaces we prove i) its equivalence to an evolution-variation inequality $EVI_k$ which in turn extends the $EVI_K$-inequality of Ambrosio-Gigli-Savaré; ii) its stability under convergence and its local-to-global property. For metric measure spaces with uniform lower curvature bounds $K$ we prove that for each pair of initial distributions $μ_1,μ_2$ on $X$ there exists a coupling $B_t=(B_t^1,B_t^2)$, $t\ge0$, of two Brownian motions on $X$ with the given initial distributions such that a.s. for all $s,t\ge0$ $$d(B^1_{s+t},B^2_{s+t})\le e^{-K t/2}\cdot d(B_s^1,B_s^2).$$

Bochner-Weitzenböck formula and Li-Yau estimates on Finsler manifolds

We prove the Bochner-Weitzenböck formula for the (nonlinear) Laplacian on general Finsler manifolds and derive Li-Yau type gradient estimates as well as parabolic Harnack inequalities. Moreover, we deduce Bakry-Émery gradient estimates. All these estimates depend on lower bounds for the weighted flag Ricci tensor.

Optimal transport from Lebesgue to Poisson

This paper is devoted to the study of couplings of the Lebesgue measure and the Poisson point process. We prove existence and uniqueness of an optimal coupling whenever the asymptotic mean transportation cost is finite. Moreover, we give precise conditions for the latter which demonstrate a sharp threshold at d=2. The cost will be defined in terms of an arbitrary increasing function of the distance. The coupling will be realized by means of a transport map ("allocation map") which assigns to each Poisson point a set ("cell") of Lebesgue measure 1. In the case of quadratic costs, all these cells will be convex polytopes.

On the Equivalence of the Entropic Curvature-Dimension Condition and Bochner's Inequality on Metric Measure Spaces

We prove the equivalence of the curvature-dimension bounds of Lott-Sturm-Villani (via entropy and optimal transport) and of Bakry--Émery (via energy and Γ_2$-calculus) in complete generality for infinitesimally Hilbertian metric measure spaces. In particular, we establish the full Bochner inequality on such metric measure spaces. Moreover, we deduce new contraction bounds for the heat flow on Riemannian manifolds and on mms in terms of the $L^2$-Wasserstein distance.

Non-branching geodesics and optimal maps in strong CD(K,{\infty})-spaces

We prove that in metric measure spaces where the entropy functional is K-convex along every Wasserstein geodesic any optimal transport between two absolutely continuous measures with finite second moments lives on a non-branching set of geodesics. As a corollary we obtain that in these spaces there exists only one optimal transport plan between any two absolutely continuous measures with finite second moments and this plan is given by a map. The results are applicable in metric measure spaces having Riemannian Ricci-curvature bounded below, and in particular they hold also for Gromov-Hausdorff limits of Riemannian manifolds with Ricci-curvature bounded from below by some constant.

Local curvature-dimension condition implies measure-contraction property

We prove that for non-branching metric measure spaces the local curvature condition CDloc(K,N) implies the global version of MCP(K,N). The curvature condition CD(K,N) introduced by the second author and also studied by Lott & Villani is the generalization to metric measure space of lower bounds on Ricci curvature together with upper bounds on the dimension. It is worth pointing out that our result implies sharp Bishop-Gromov volume growth inequality and sharp Poincaré inequality.
