Solving nonlinear differential equations on noisy $156$-qubit quantum computers

In this paper, we report on the resolution of nonlinear differential equations using IBM's quantum platform. More specifically, we demonstrate that the hybrid classical-quantum algorithm H-DES successfully solves a one-dimensional material deformation problem and the inviscid Burgers' equation on IBM's 156-qubit quantum computers. These results constitute a step toward performing physically relevant simulations on present-day Noisy Intermediate-Scale Quantum (NISQ) devices.

H-DES: a Quantum-Classical Hybrid Differential Equation Solver

In this article, we introduce an original hybrid quantum-classical algorithm based on a variational quantum algorithm for solving systems of differential equations. The algorithm relies on a spectral decomposition of the trial functions that are encoded directly in the quantum states generated by different parametrized circuits, and transforms the task of solving the differential equations into an optimization problem. We first describe the principle of the algorithm from a theoretical point of view. We provide a detailed pseudo-code of the algorithm, on which we elaborate preliminary elements for a complexity analysis to highlight some of its scaling properties. We apply our algorithm to a set of examples, running on emulators and real hardware showcasing its applicability across diverse sets of differential equations. We discuss the advantages of our method and potential avenues for further exploration and refinement.

Flavour-selective localization in interacting lattice fermions via SU(N) symmetry breaking

A large repulsion between particles in a quantum system can lead to their localization, as it happens for the electrons in Mott insulating materials. This paradigm has recently branched out into a new quantum state, the orbital-selective Mott insulator, where electrons in some orbitals are predicted to localize, while others remain itinerant. We provide a direct experimental realization of this phenomenon, that we extend to a more general flavour-selective localization. By using an atom-based quantum simulator, we engineer SU(3) Fermi-Hubbard models breaking their symmetry via a tunable coupling between flavours, observing an enhancement of localization and the emergence of flavour-dependent correlations. Our realization of flavour-selective Mott physics opens the path to the quantum simulation of multicomponent materials, from superconductors to topological insulators.

Inducing and controlling magnetism in the honeycomb lattice through harmonic trapping potential

We study strongly interacting ultracold spin-1/2 fermions in a honeycomb lattice in the presence of a harmonic trap. Tuning the strength of the harmonic trap we show that it is possible to confine the fermions in artificial structures reminiscent of graphene nanoflakes in solid state. The confinement on small structures induces magnetic effects which are absent in a large graphene sheet. Increasing the strength of the harmonic potential we are able to induce different magnetic states, such as a Néel-like antiferromagnetic or ferromagnetic states, as well as mixtures of these basic states. The realization of different magnetic patterns is associated with the terminations of the artificial structures, in turn controlled by the confining potential.
