Operational Methods in the Study of Sobolev-Jacobi Polynomials

Inspired by ideas from umbral calculus and based on the two types of integrals occurring in the defining equations for the gamma and the reciprocal gamma functions, respectively, we develop a multi-variate version of umbral calculus and of the so-called umbral image technique. Besides providing a class of new formulae for generalized hypergeometric functions and an implementation of series manipulations for computing lacunary generating functions, our main application of these techniques is the study of Sobolev-Jacobi polynomials. Motivated by applications to theoretical chemistry, we moreover present a deep link between generalized normal-ordering techniques introduced by Gurappa and Panigrahi, two-variable Hermite polynomials and our integral-based series transforms. Notably, we thus calculate all K-tuple L-shifted lacunary exponential generating functions for a certain family of SJ polynomials explicitly.

Explicit formulae for all higher order exponential lacunary generating functions of Hermite polynomials

For a sequence $P=(p_n(x))_{n=0}^{\infty}$ of polynomials $p_n(x)$, we study the $K$-tuple and $L$-shifted exponential lacunary generating functions $\mathcal{G}_{K,L}(λ;x):=\sum_{n=0}^{\infty}\frac{λ^n}{n!} p_{n\cdot K+L}(x)$, for $K=1,2\dotsc$ and $L=0,1,2\dotsc$. We establish an algorithm for efficiently computing $\mathcal{G}_{K,L}(λ;x)$ for generic polynomial sequences $P$. This procedure is exemplified by application to the study of Hermite polynomials, whereby we obtain closed-form expressions for $\mathcal{G}_{K,L}(λ;x)$ for arbitrary $K$ and $L$, in the form of infinite series involving generalized hypergeometric functions. The basis of our method is provided by certain resummation techniques, supplemented by operational formulae. Our approach also reproduces all the results previously known in the literature.

Combinatorics of chemical reaction systems

We propose a concise stochastic mechanics framework for chemical reaction systems that allows to formulate evolution equations for three general types of data: the probability generating functions, the exponential moment generating functions and the factorial moment generating functions. This formulation constitutes an intimate synergy between techniques of statistical physics and of combinatorics. We demonstrate how to analytically solve the evolution equations for all six elementary types of single-species chemical reactions by either combinatorial normal-ordering techniques, or, for the binary reactions, by means of Sobolev-Jacobi orthogonal polynomials. The former set of results in particular highlights the relationship between infinitesimal generators of stochastic evolution and parametric transformations of probability distributions.

A Fuss-type family of positive definite sequences

We study a two-parameter family $a_{n}(p,t)$ of deformations of the Fuss numbers. We show a sufficient condition for positive definiteness of $a_n(p,t)$ and prove that some of the corresponding probability measures are infinitely divisible with respect to the additive free convolution.

Spectral density of generalized Wishart matrices and free multiplicative convolution

We investigate the level density for several ensembles of positive random matrices of a Wishart--like structure, $W=XX^{\dagger}$, where $X$ stands for a nonhermitian random matrix. In particular, making use of the Cauchy transform, we study free multiplicative powers of the Marchenko-Pastur (MP) distribution, ${\rm MP}^{\boxtimes s}$, which for an integer $s$ yield Fuss-Catalan distributions corresponding to a product of $s$ independent square random matrices, $X=X_1\cdots X_s$. New formulae for the level densities are derived for $s=3$ and $s=1/3$. Moreover, the level density corresponding to the generalized Bures distribution, given by the free convolution of arcsine and MP distributions is obtained. We also explain the reason of such a curious convolution. The technique proposed here allows for the derivation of the level densities for several other cases.

Combinatorial interpretation and proof of Glaisher-Crofton identity

We give a purely combinatorial proof of the Glaisher-Crofton identity which derives from the analysis of discrete structures generated by iterated second derivative. The argument illustrates utility of symbolic and generating function methodology of modern enumerative combinatorics and their applications to computational problems.

Probability distributions with binomial moments

We prove that if $p\geq 1$ and $-1\leq r\leq p-1$ then the binomial sequence $\binom{np+r}{n}$, $n=0,1,...$, is positive definite and is the moment sequence of a probability measure $ν(p,r)$, whose support is contained in $\left[0,p^p(p-1)^{1-p}\right]$. If $p>1$ is a rational number and $-1 1$ the measures $ν(p,-1)$ and $ν(p,0)$ are certain free convolution powers of the Bernoulli distribution. Finally we prove that the binomial sequence $\binom{np+r}{n}$ is positive definite if and only if either $p\geq 1$, $-1\leq r\leq p-1$ or $p\leq 0$, $p-1\leq r \leq 0$. The measures corresponding to the latter case are reflections of the former ones.

The probability measure corresponding to 2-plane trees

We study the probability measure $μ_{0}$ for which the moment sequence is $\binom{3n}{n}\frac{1}{n+1}$. We prove that $μ_{0}$ is absolutely continuous, find the density function and prove that $μ_{0}$ is infinitely divisible with respect to the additive free convolution.

Densities of the Raney distributions

We prove that if $p\ge 1$ and $0< r\le p$ then the sequence $\binom{mp+r}{m}\frac{r}{mp+r}$, $m=0,1,2,...$, is positive definite, more precisely, is the moment sequence of a probability measure $μ(p,r)$ with compact support contained in $[0,+\infty)$. This family of measures encompasses the multiplicative free powers of the Marchenko-Pastur distribution as well as the Wigner's semicircle distribution centered at $x=2$. We show that if $p>1$ is a rational number, $0<r\le p$, then $μ(p,r)$ is absolutely continuous and its density $W_{p,r}(x)$ can be expressed in terms of the Meijer and the generalized hypergeometric functions. In some cases, including the multiplicative free square and the multiplicative free square root of the Marchenko-Pastur measure, $W_{p,r}(x)$ turns out to be an elementary function.

A generic Hopf algebra for quantum statistical mechanics

In this paper, we present a Hopf algebra description of a bosonic quantum model, using the elementary combinatorial elements of Bell and Stirling numbers. Our objective in doing this is as follows. Recent studies have revealed that perturbative quantum field theory (pQFT) displays an astonishing interplay between analysis (Riemann zeta functions), topology (Knot theory), combinatorial graph theory (Feynman diagrams) and algebra (Hopf structure). Since pQFT is an inherently complicated study, so far not exactly solvable and replete with divergences, the essential simplicity of the relationships between these areas can be somewhat obscured. The intention here is to display some of the above-mentioned structures in the context of a simple bosonic quantum theory, i.e. a quantum theory of non-commuting operators that do not depend on space-time. The combinatorial properties of these boson creation and annihilation operators, which is our chosen example, may be described by graphs, analogous to the Feynman diagrams of pQFT, which we show possess a Hopf algebra structure. Our approach is based on the quantum canonical partition function for a boson gas.

Product of Ginibre matrices: Fuss-Catalan and Raney distributions

Squared singular values of a product of s square random Ginibre matrices are asymptotically characterized by probability distribution P_s(x), such that their moments are equal to the Fuss-Catalan numbers or order s. We find a representation of the Fuss--Catalan distributions P_s(x) in terms of a combination of s hypergeometric functions of the type sF_{s-1}. The explicit formula derived here is exact for an arbitrary positive integer s and for s=1 it reduces to the Marchenko--Pastur distribution. Using similar techniques, involving Mellin transform and the Meijer G-function, we find exact expressions for the Raney probability distributions, the moments of which are given by a two parameter generalization of the Fuss-Catalan numbers. These distributions can also be considered as a two parameter generalization of the Wigner semicircle law.

Generating random density matrices

We study various methods to generate ensembles of random density matrices of a fixed size N, obtained by partial trace of pure states on composite systems. Structured ensembles of random pure states, invariant with respect to local unitary transformations are introduced. To analyze statistical properties of quantum entanglement in bi-partite systems we analyze the distribution of Schmidt coefficients of random pure states. Such a distribution is derived in the case of a superposition of k random maximally entangled states. For another ensemble, obtained by performing selective measurements in a maximally entangled basis on a multi--partite system, we show that this distribution is given by the Fuss-Catalan law and find the average entanglement entropy. A more general class of structured ensembles proposed, containing also the case of Bures, forms an extension of the standard ensemble of structureless random pure states, described asymptotically, as N \to \infty, by the Marchenko-Pastur distribution.

From Quantum Mechanics to Quantum Field Theory: The Hopf route

We show that the combinatorial numbers known as {\em Bell numbers} are generic in quantum physics. This is because they arise in the procedure known as {\em Normal ordering} of bosons, a procedure which is involved in the evaluation of quantum functions such as the canonical partition function of quantum statistical physics, {\it inter alia}. In fact, we shall show that an evaluation of the non-interacting partition function for a single boson system is identical to integrating the {\em exponential generating function} of the Bell numbers, which is a device for encapsulating a combinatorial sequence in a single function. We then introduce a remarkable equality, the Dobinski relation, and use it to indicate why renormalisation is necessary in even the simplest of perturbation expansions for a partition function. Finally we introduce a global algebraic description of this simple model, giving a Hopf algebra, which provides a starting point for extensions to more complex physical systems.

Ladder Operators and Endomorphisms in Combinatorial Physics

Starting with the Heisenberg-Weyl algebra, fundamental to quantum physics, we first show how the ordering of the non-commuting operators intrinsic to that algebra gives rise to generalizations of the classical Stirling Numbers of Combinatorics. These may be expressed in terms of infinite, but {\em row-finite}, matrices, which may also be considered as endomorphisms of $\C[[x]]$. This leads us to consider endomorphisms in more general spaces, and these in turn may be expressed in terms of generalizations of the ladder-operators familiar in physics.

Rational Hadamard products via Quantum Diagonal Operators

We use the remark that, through Bargmann-Fock representation, diagonal operators of the Heisenberg-Weyl algebra are scalars for the Hadamard product to give some properties (like the stability of periodic fonctions) of the Hadamard product by a rational fraction. In particular, we provide through this way explicit formulas for the multiplication table of the Hadamard product in the algebra of rational functions in $\C[[z]]$.

A Three Parameter Hopf Deformation of the Algebra of Feynman-like Diagrams

We construct a three-parameter deformation of the Hopf algebra $\LDIAG$. This is the algebra that appears in an expansion in terms of Feynman-like diagrams of the {\em product formula} in a simplified version of Quantum Field Theory. This new algebra is a true Hopf deformation which reduces to $\LDIAG$ for some parameter values and to the algebra of Matrix Quasi-Symmetric Functions ($\MQS$) for others, and thus relates $\LDIAG$ to other Hopf algebras of contemporary physics. Moreover, there is an onto linear mapping preserving products from our algebra to the algebra of Euler-Zagier sums.

A multipurpose Hopf deformation of the Algebra of Feynman-like Diagrams

We construct a three parameter deformation of the Hopf algebra $\mathbf{LDIAG}$. This new algebra is a true Hopf deformation which reduces to $\mathbf{LDIAG}$ on one hand and to $\mathbf{MQSym}$ on the other, relating $\mathbf{LDIAG}$ to other Hopf algebras of interest in contemporary physics. Further, its product law reproduces that of the algebra of polyzeta functions.
