Cluster glass behavior and magnetocaloric effect in the hexagonal polymorph of disordered Ce$_2$PdGe$_3$

In this work, we study the hexagonal variant of the $\text{Ce}_2\text{PdGe}_3$ system that crystallizes in the $\text{AlB}_2$-type structure (space group $P6/mmm$, $hP3$) and exhibits cluster spin glass type behavior. The physical properties were studied by magnetization, heat capacity and electric resistivity, which showed that $\text{AlB}_2$-type $\text{Ce}_2\text{PdGe}_3$ ($h\text{-Ce}_2\text{PdGe}_3$) can be classified as a cluster glass material with the freezing temperature $T_f = 3.44 \text{ K}$ in contrast to the behavior of the previously described tetragonal variant, which shows a double antiferromagnetic transition at $T_{N1} = 11 \text{ K}$ and $T_{N2} = 2.3 \text{ K}$. The X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy measurements reveal that the $\text{Ce } 4f$ states are well localized. In addition, we examine the magnetocaloric effect in this compound. The maximum values of magnetocaloric parameters appear in the vicinity of $7\text{--}9 \text{ K}$. For a magnetic field change of $50 \text{ kOe}$, the value of the change in magnetic entropy is $2.6(1) \text{ J kg}^{-1} \text{ K}^{-1}$ and the adiabatic temperature change is $\sim 8 \text{ K}$.

Magnetoelasticity - magnetic structure interrelation - tetragonal MnPt system study

Magnetic materials represent an essential ingredient for the contemporary industry. Apart from common material parameters such as magnetocrystalline anisotropy, coercivity, or saturation magnetization, magnetoelastic behavior is vital for applications serving in various devices, e.g., in acoustic actuators, transducers, or sensors providing a desirable fast response and high efficiency with respect to applied magnetic field. Magnetoelastic properties have been studied for ferromagnetic 3d elements, or especially in high symmetry systems containing rare-earth elements to achieve higher values. Since, unlike for rare earth Laves phases, in the transition metals or alloys, these effects are very weak. Here, in contrast, we analyze the magnetoelastic behavior of antiferromagnetic tetragonal system MnPt, explaining the experimentally measured data based on the theoretical calculations and discussing the influence of the magnetic structure. Particularly, we inspect the origin of magnetocrystalline anisotropy energy, as well as the size and source of the isotropic and anisotropic parts of magnetoelastic (magnetostriction) coefficients.

Evidence of variable range hopping in the Zintl phase EuIn2P2

We report a comprehensive characterization of the magnetic, electrical transport, spectral, and thermal properties of single-crystalline Zintl-type material EuIn2P2. The compound crystallizes with a hexagonal unit cell (space group P63/mmc) and orders magnetically at TC=24K with the Eu magnetic moments aligned ferromagnetically within the ab plane but tilted alternately along the c-axis direction. The effective and saturation magnetic moments agree with the theoretical values expected for the Eu2+ ion. For a range of several tens of kelvins above 40K, the electrical transport of EuIn2P2 is dominated by short-range magnetic interactions. The temperature dependence of the electrical resistivity has been modelled in terms of variable-range hopping. Another indication of the latter scenario seems to be the observation for EuIn2P2 of a quadratic dependence of the negative magnetoresistance on the magnetic field strength and the scaled magnetization. The temperature dependence of Raman band position and FWHM, as well as phonon lifetime, confirms the presence of the distinctive regions observed in transport and magnetic studies.

Magnetocaloric properties of single-crystalline Eu$_5$In$_2$Sb$_6$

The magnetocaloric effect (MCE) in single-crystalline Eu$_5$In$_2$Sb$_6$ was studied over broad temperature ranges and magnetic field intervals, with the magnetic field oriented parallel and perpendicular to the crystallographic $\textit{c}$-axis in the orthorhombic Ca$_5$Ga$_2$As$_6$-type unit cell of the crystals. The compound is an antiferromagnetic insulator with two subsequent magnetic phase transitions at $T_{N1} \approx$ 14.0 K and $T_{N2} \approx$ 7.1 K. The compound was found to exhibit both normal and inverse MCE. Furthermore, due to substantial magnetic anisotropy, it also exhibits a rotational MCE. For conventional MCE, the maximum value of the isothermal entropy change $ΔS_m$ is -4.7(1) J kg$^{-1}$ K$^{-1}$ at 15(1) K for a magnetic field change of 5 T, independent of the field direction. The relative cooling power (RCP) is also almost identical for both directions, and equals 81(1) J kg$^{-1}$ for a magnetic field change of 5 T. The most significant rotational MCE was observed at about 11 K, with a maximum $ΔS_R$ value of 2.4(1) J kg$^{-1}$ K$^{-1}$ and RCP = 17.5(6) J kg$^{-1}$ for a magnetic field change of 4 T.

Effect of secondary LuNiSn phase on thermoelectric properties of half-Heusler alloy LuNiSb

We report on the high-temperature (350 K <T< 1000 K) thermoelectric properties of the ternary compounds LuNiSb (cubic) and LuNiSn (orthorhombic) and a composite material (LuNiSb)$_{0.5}$(LuNiSn)$_{0.5}$. The electrical conductivity in LuNiSn is metallic, while it is semiconducting-like in LuNiSb. The Seebeck coefficient reaches -5.5 $μ$V/K at 700 K for the former compound and 66 $μ$V/K at 607 K for the latter one. The composite sample (LuNiSb)$_{0.5}$(LuNiSn)$_{0.5}$ constructed from orthorhombic matrix with cubic inclusions combines the electrical conductivity of LuNiSn with the thermoelectric properties of LuNiSb. Nonetheless, no enhancement of the thermoelectric performance occurs for this material.

High-temperature thermoelectric properties of half-Heusler phases Er$_{1-x}$Ho$_x$NiSb

Polycrystalline samples of Er$_{1-x}$Ho$_x$NiSb ($x$ = 0, 0.2, 0.3, 0.5, 0.7, 0.8, 1) were characterized by means of x-ray powder diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and optical metallography. The results proved the formation of half-Heusler alloys in the entire composition range. Their electrical transport properties (resistivity, thermoelectric power) were studied in the temperature interval 350-1000 K. The measured electrical resistivity spanned between 5 and 25 $μΩ$m. The maximum thermopower of 50-65 $μ$V/K was observed at temperatures 500-650 K. Replacing Ho for Er resulted in a non-monotonous variation of the thermoelectric power factor ($PF = S^2/ρ$). The largest $PF$ of 4.6 $μ$WcmK$^{-2}$ was found at 660 K for Er$_{0.5}$Ho$_{0.5}$NiSb. This value is distinctly larger than PF determined for the terminal phases ErNiSb and HoNiSb.
