Quantum version of the Euler's problem: a geometric perspective

The classical combinatorial problem of $36$ officers has no solution, as there are no Graeco-Latin squares of order six. The situation changes if one works in a quantum setup and allows for superpositions of classical objects and admits entangled states. We analyze the recently found solution to the quantum version of the Euler's problem from a geometric point of view. The notion of a non-displaceable manifold embedded in a larger space is recalled. This property implies that any two copies of such a manifold, like two great circles on a sphere, do intersect. Existence of a quantum Graeco-Latin square of size six, equivalent to a maximally entangled state of four subsystems with d=6 levels each, implies that three copies of the manifold U(36)/U(1) of maximally entangled states of the $36\times 36$ system, embedded in the complex projective space ${C}P^{36\times 36 -1}$, do intersect simultaneously at a certain point.

Perfect quantum-state synchronization

We investigate the most general mechanisms that lead to perfect synchronization of the quantum states of all subsystems of an open quantum system starting from an arbitrary initial state. We provide a necessary and sufficient condition for such "quantum-state synchronization", prove tight lower bounds on the dimension of the environment's Hilbert space in two main classes of quantum-state synchronizers, and give an analytical solution for their construction. The functioning of the found quantum-state synchronizer of two qubits is demonstrated experimentally on an IBM quantum computer and we show that the remaining asynchronicity is a sensitive measure of the quantum computer's imperfection.

$k$-uniform mixed states

We investigate the maximum purity that can be achieved by k-uniform mixed states of N parties. Such N-party states have the property that all their k-party reduced states are maximally mixed. A scheme to construct explicitly k-uniform states using a set of specific N-qubit Pauli matrices is proposed. We provide several different examples of such states and demonstrate that in some cases the state corresponds to a particular orthogonal array. The obtained states, despite being mixed, reveal strong non-classical properties such as genuine multipartite entanglement or violation of Bell inequalities.

Entanglement and quantum combinatorial designs

We introduce several classes of quantum combinatorial designs, namely quantum Latin squares, cubes, hypercubes and a notion of orthogonality between them. A further introduced notion, quantum orthogonal arrays, generalizes all previous classes of designs. We show that mutually orthogonal quantum Latin arrangements can be entangled in the same way than quantum states are entangled. Furthermore, we show that such designs naturally define a remarkable class of genuinely multipartite highly entangled states called $k$-uniform, i.e. multipartite pure states such that every reduction to $k$ parties is maximally mixed. We derive infinitely many classes of mutually orthogonal quantum Latin arrangements and quantum orthogonal arrays having an arbitrary large number of columns. The corresponding multipartite $k$-uniform states exhibit a high persistency of entanglement, which makes them ideal candidates to develop multipartite quantum information protocols.

Gauge invariant information concerning quantum channels

Motivated by the gate set tomography we study quantum channels from the perspective of information which is invariant with respect to the gauge realized through similarity of matrices representing channel superoperators. We thus use the complex spectrum of the superoperator to provide necessary conditions relevant for complete positivity of qubit channels and to express various metrics such as average gate fidelity.

Quantum noise generated by local random Hamiltonians

We investigate the impact of a local random unitary noise on multipartite quantum states of an arbitrary dimension. We follow the dynamical approach, in which the single-particle unitaries are generated by local random Hamiltonians. Assuming short evolution time we derive a lower bound on the fidelity between an initial and the final state transformed by this type of noise. This result is based on averaging the Tamm-Mandelstam bound and holds for a wide class of distributions of random Hamiltonians fulfilling specific symmetry conditions. It is showed how the sensitivity of a given pure quantum state to the discussed type of noise depends on the properties of single-particle and bipartite reduced states.

On discrete structures in finite Hilbert spaces

We present a brief review of discrete structures in a finite Hilbert space, relevant for the theory of quantum information. Unitary operator bases, mutually unbiased bases, Clifford group and stabilizer states, discrete Wigner function, symmetric informationally complete measurements, projective and unitary t--designs are discussed. Some recent results in the field are covered and several important open questions are formulated. We advocate a geometric approach to the subject and emphasize numerous links to various mathematical problems.

A brief introduction to multipartite entanglement

A concise introduction to quantum entanglement in multipartite systems is presented. We review entanglement of pure quantum states of three--partite systems analyzing the classes of GHZ and W states and discussing the monogamy relations. Special attention is paid to equivalence with respect to local unitaries and stochastic local operations, invariants along these orbits, momentum map and spectra of partial traces. We discuss absolutely maximally entangled states and their relation to quantum error correction codes. An important case of a large number of parties is also analysed and entanglement in spin systems is briefly reviewed.

Can local dynamics enhance entangling power?

It is demonstrated here that local dynamics have the ability to strongly modify the entangling power of unitary quantum gates acting on a composite system. The scenario is common to numerous physical systems, in which the time evolution involves local operators and nonlocal interactions. To distinguish between distinct classes of gates with zero entangling power we introduce a complementary quantity called gate-typicality and study its properties. Analyzing multiple applications of any entangling operator interlaced with random local gates, we prove that both investigated quantities approach their asymptotic values in a simple exponential form. This rapid convergence to equilibrium, valid for subsystems of arbitrary size, is illustrated by studying multiple actions of diagonal unitary gates and controlled unitary gates.

Selfcomplementary quantum channels

Selfcomplementary quantum channels are characterized by such an interaction between the principal quantum system and the environment that leads to the same output states of both interacting systems. These maps can describe approximate quantum copy machines, as perfect copying of an unknown quantum state is not possible due to the celebrated no-cloning theorem. We provide here a parametrization of a large class of selfcomplementary channels and analyze their properties. Selfcomplementary channels preserve some residual coherences and residual entanglement. Investigating some measures of non-Markovianity we show that time evolution under selfcomplementary channels is highly non-Markovian.

Spectral density of generalized Wishart matrices and free multiplicative convolution

We investigate the level density for several ensembles of positive random matrices of a Wishart--like structure, $W=XX^{\dagger}$, where $X$ stands for a nonhermitian random matrix. In particular, making use of the Cauchy transform, we study free multiplicative powers of the Marchenko-Pastur (MP) distribution, ${\rm MP}^{\boxtimes s}$, which for an integer $s$ yield Fuss-Catalan distributions corresponding to a product of $s$ independent square random matrices, $X=X_1\cdots X_s$. New formulae for the level densities are derived for $s=3$ and $s=1/3$. Moreover, the level density corresponding to the generalized Bures distribution, given by the free convolution of arcsine and MP distributions is obtained. We also explain the reason of such a curious convolution. The technique proposed here allows for the derivation of the level densities for several other cases.

Genuinely multipartite entangled states and orthogonal arrays

A pure quantum state of N subsystems with d levels each is called k-multipartite maximally entangled state, written k-uniform, if all its reductions to k qudits are maximally mixed. These states form a natural generalization of N-qudits GHZ states which belong to the class 1-uniform states. We establish a link between the combinatorial notion of orthogonal arrays and k-uniform states and prove the existence of several new classes of such states for N-qudit systems. In particular, known Hadamard matrices allow us to explicitly construct 2-uniform states for an arbitrary number of N>5 qubits. We show that finding a different class of 2-uniform states would imply the Hadamard conjecture, so the full classification of 2-uniform states seems to be currently out of reach. Additionally, single vectors of another class of 2-uniform states are one-to-one related to maximal sets of mutually unbiased bases. Furthermore, we establish links between existence of k-uniform states, classical and quantum error correction codes and provide a novel graph representation for such states.

Constructive entanglement test from triangle inequality

We derive a simple lower bound on the geometric measure of entanglement for mixed quantum states in the case of a general multipartite system. The main ingredient of the presented derivation is the triangle inequality applied to the root infidelity distance in the space of density matrices. The obtained bound leads to entanglement criteria with a straightforward interpretation. Proposed criteria provide an experimentally accessible, powerful entanglement test.

Area law for random graph states

Random pure states of multi-partite quantum systems, associated with arbitrary graphs, are investigated. Each vertex of the graph represents a generic interaction between subsystems, described by a random unitary matrix distributed according to the Haar measure, while each edge of the graph represents a bi-partite, maximally entangled state. For any splitting of the graph into two parts we consider the corresponding partition of the quantum system and compute the average entropy of entanglement. First, in the special case where the partition does not "cross" any vertex of the graph, we show that the area law is satisfied exactly. In the general case, we show that the entropy of entanglement obeys an area law on average, this time with a correction term that depends on the topologies of the graph and of the partition. The results obtained are applied to the problem of distribution of quantum entanglement in a quantum network with prescribed topology.

Extremal spacings between eigenphases of random unitary matrices and their tensor products

Extremal spacings between eigenvalues of random unitary matrices of size N pertaining to circular ensembles are investigated. Explicit probability distributions for the minimal spacing for various ensembles are derived for N = 4. We study ensembles of tensor product of k random unitary matrices of size n which describe independent evolution of a composite quantum system consisting of k subsystems. In the asymptotic case, as the total dimension N = n^k becomes large, the nearest neighbor distribution P(s) becomes Poissonian, but statistics of extreme spacings P(s_min) and P(s_max) reveal certain deviations from the Poissonian behavior.
