Validity of threshold-crossing analysis of symbolic dynamics from chaotic time series

A practical and popular technique to extract the symbolic dynamics from experimentally measured chaotic time series is the threshold-crossing method, by which an arbitrary partition is utilized for determining the symbols. We address to what extent the symbolic dynamics so obtained can faithfully represent the phase-space dynamics. Our principal result is that such practice leads to a severe misrepresentation of the dynamical system. The measured topological entropy is a Devil's staircase-like, but surprisingly nonmonotone, function of a parameter characterizing the amount of misplacement of the partition.

Dynamical entropy for systems with stochastic perturbation

Dynamics of deterministic systems perturbed by random additive noise is characterized quantitatively. Since for such systems the KS-entropy diverges we analyse the difference between the total entropy of a noisy system and the entropy of the noise itself. We show that this quantity is non negative and in the weak noise limit is conjectured to tend to the KS-entropy of the deterministic system. In particular, we consider one-dimensional systems with noise described by a finite-dimensional kernel, for which the Frobenius-Perron operator can be represented by a finite matrix.

Invariant sets for discontinuous parabolic area-preserving torus maps

We analyze a class of piecewise linear parabolic maps on the torus, namely those obtained by considering a linear map with double eigenvalue one and taking modulo one in each component. We show that within this two parameter family of maps, the set of noninvertible maps is open and dense. For cases where the entries in the matrix are rational we show that the maximal invariant set has positive Lebesgue measure and we give bounds on the measure. For several examples we find expressions for the measure of the invariant set but we leave open the question as to whether there are parameters for which this measure is zero.

Truncations of random unitary matrices

We analyze properties of non-hermitian matrices of size M constructed as square submatrices of unitary (orthogonal) random matrices of size N>M, distributed according to the Haar measure. In this way we define ensembles of random matrices and study the statistical properties of the spectrum located inside the unit circle. In the limit of large matrices, this ensemble is characterized by the ratio M/N. For the truncated CUE we derive analytically the joint density of eigenvalues from which easily all correlation functions are obtained. For N-M fixed and N--> infinity the universal resonance-width distribution with N-M open channels is recovered.

Localization of Eigenstates & Mean Wehrl Entropy

Dynamics of a periodically time dependent quantum system is reflected in the features of the eigenstates of the Floquet operator. Of the special importance are their localization properties quantitatively characterized by the eigenvector entropy, the inverse participation ratio or the eigenvector statistics. Since these quantities depend on the choice of the eigenbasis, we suggest to use the overcomplete basis of coherent states, uniquely determined by the classical phase space. In this way we define the mean Wehrl entropy of eigenvectors of the Floquet operator and demonstrate that this quantity is useful to describe quantum chaotic systems.

Entropy computing via integration over fractal measures

We discuss the properties of invariant measures corresponding to iterated function systems (IFSs) with place-dependent probabilities and compute their Renyi entropies, generalized dimensions, and multifractal spectra. It is shown that with certain dynamical systems one can associate the corresponding IFSs in such a way that their generalized entropies are equal. This provides a new method of computing entropy for some classical and quantum dynamical systems. Numerical techniques are based on integration over the fractal measures.

On the volume of the set of mixed entangled states II

The problem of of how many entangled or, respectively, separable states there are in the set of all quantum states is investigated. We study to what extent the choice of a measure in the space of density matrices describing N--dimensional quantum systems affects the results obtained. We demonstrate that the link between the purity of the mixed states and the probability of entanglement is not sensitive to the measure chosen. Since the criterion of partial transposition is not sufficient to distinguish all separable states for N > 6, we develop an efficient algorithm to calculate numerically the entanglement of formation of a given mixed quantum state, which allows us to compute the volume of separable states for N=8 and to estimate the volume of the bound entangled states in this case.

Quantum baker map on the sphere

We define a class of dynamical systems on the sphere analogous to the baker map on the torus. The classical maps are characterized by dynamical entropy equal to ln 2. We construct and investigate a family of the corresponding quantum maps. In the simplest case of the model the system does not possess a time reversal symmetry and the quantum map is represented by real, orthogonal matrices of even dimension. The semiclassical ensemble of quantum maps, obtained by averaging over a range of matrix sizes, displays statistical properties characteristic of circular unitary ensemble. Time evolution of such systems may be studied with the help of the SU(2) coherent states and the generalized Husimi distribution.

Linear Parabolic Maps on the Torus

We investigate linear parabolic maps on the torus. In a generic case these maps are non-invertible and discontinuous. Although the metric entropy of these systems is equal to zero, their dynamics is non-trivial due to folding of the image of the unit square into the torus. We study the structure of the maximal invariant set, and in a generic case we prove the sensitive dependence on the initial conditions. We study the decay of correlations and the diffusion in the corresponding system on the plane. We also demonstrate how the rationality of the real numbers defining the map influences the dynamical properties of the system.

Composed ensembles of random unitary matrices

Composed ensembles of random unitary matrices are defined via products of matrices, each pertaining to a given canonical circular ensemble of Dyson. We investigate statistical properties of spectra of some composed ensembles and demonstrate their physical relevance. We discuss also the methods of generating random matrices distributed according to invariant Haar measure on the orthogonal and unitary group.

Quantum scattering in the strip: from ballistic to localized regimes

Quantum scattering is studied in a system consisting of randomly distributed point scatterers in the strip. The model is continuous yet exactly solvable. Varying the number of scatterers (the sample length) we investigate a transition between the ballistic and the localized regimes. By considering the cylinder geometry and introducing the magnetic flux we are able to study time reversal symmetry breaking in the system. Both macroscopic (conductance) and microscopic (eigenphases distribution, statistics of S-matrix elements) characteristics of the system are examined.

On the entropy devil's staircase in a family of gap-tent maps

We analyze dynamical properties of a "gap-tent map" - a family of 1D maps with a symmetric gap, which mimics the presence of noise in physical realizations of chaotic systems. We demonstrate that the dependence of the topological entropy on the size of the gap has a structure of the devil's staircase. By integrating over a fractal measure, we obtain analytical, piece-wise differentiable approximations of this dependence. Applying concepts of the kneading theory we find the position and the values of the entropy for all leading entropy plateaus. Similar properties hold also for the dependence of the fractal dimension of the invariant set and the escape rate.

On the volume of the set of mixed entangled states

A natural measure in the space of density matrices describing N-dimensional quantum systems is proposed. We study the probability P that a quantum state chosen randomly with respect to the natural measure is not entangled (is separable). We find analytical lower and upper bounds for this quantity. Numerical calculations give P = 0.632 for N=4 and P=0.384 for N=6, and indicate that P decreases exponentially with N. Analysis of a conditional measure of separability under the condition of fixed purity shows a clear dualism between purity and separability: entanglement is typical for pure states, while separability is connected with quantum mixtures. In particular, states of sufficiently low purity are necessarily separable.

Random matrix approach to `nonuniversal' conductance

Recent experiments on the conductance of high quality quantum wires have revealed an unexpected feature: the quantization step of the conductance is apparently system dependent. We provide the understanding of this behaviour using the appropriately extended random matrix approach. A single additional parameter governs the size of the conductance quantization steps. In effect the behaviour seems to remain `universal', generic for the conductance of a class of mesoscopic systems.

Monge Distance between Quantum States

We define a metric in the space of quantum states taking the Monge distance between corresponding Husimi distributions (Q--functions). This quantity fulfills the axioms of a metric and satisfies the following semiclassical property: the distance between two coherent states is equal to the Euclidean distance between corresponding points in the classical phase space. We compute analytically distances between certain states (coherent, squeezed, Fock and thermal) and discuss a scheme for numerical computation of Monge distance for two arbitrary quantum states.

Coherent States Measurement Entropy

Coherent states (CS) quantum entropy can be split into two components. The dynamical entropy is linked with the dynamical properties of a quantum system. The measurement entropy, which tends to zero in the semiclassical limit, describes the unpredictability induced by the process of a quantum approximate measurement. We study the CS--measurement entropy for spin coherent states defined on the sphere discussing different methods dealing with the time limit $n \to \infty$. In particular we propose an effective technique of computing the entropy by iterated function systems. The dependence of CS--measurement entropy on the character of the partition of the phase space is analysed.

Statistical properties of random scattering matrices

We discuss the properties of eigenphases of S--matrices in random models simulating classically chaotic scattering. The energy dependence of the eigenphases is investigated and the corresponding velocity and curvature distributions are obtained both theoretically and numerically. A simple formula describing the velocity distribution (and hence the distribution of the Wigner time delay) is derived, which is capable to explain the algebraic tail of the time delay distribution observed recently in microwave experiments. A dependence of the eigenphases on other external parameters is also discussed. We show that in the semiclassical limit (large number of channels) the curvature distribution of $S$--matrix eigenphases is the same as that corresponding to the curvature distribution of the underlying Hamiltonian and is given by the generalized Cauchy distribution.
