Large scale geometry of big mapping class groups

We study the large-scale geometry of mapping class groups of surfaces of infinite type, using the framework of Rosendal for coarse geometry of non locally compact groups. We give a complete classification of those surfaces whose mapping class groups have local coarse boundedness (the analog of local compactness). When the end space of the surface is countable or tame, we also give a classification of those surface where there exists a coarsely bounded generating set (the analog of finite or compact generation, giving the group a well-defined quasi-isometry type) and those surfaces with mapping class groups of bounded diameter (the analog of compactness).

Coarse and fine geometry of the Thurston metric

We study the geometry of the Thurston metric on the Teichmüller space $\mathcal{T}(S)$ of hyperbolic structures on a surface $S$. Some of our results on the coarse geometry of this metric apply to arbitrary surfaces $S$ of finite type; however, we focus particular attention on the case where the surface is a once-punctured torus, $S_{1,1}$. In that case, our results provide a detailed picture of the infinitesimal, local, and global behavior of the geodesics of the Thurston metric, as well as an analogue of Royden's theorem.

Geodesics Currents and Counting Problems

For every positive, continuous and homogeneous function $f$ on the space of currents on a compact surface $\overlineΣ$, and for every compactly supported filling current $α$, we compute as $L \to \infty$, the number of mapping classes $ϕ$ so that $f(ϕ(α))\leq L$. As an application, when the surface in question is closed, we prove a lattice counting theorem for Teichmüller space equipped with the Thurston metric.

Geodesics in the mapping class group

We construct explicit examples of geodesics in the mapping class group and show that the shadow of a geodesic in mapping class group to the curve graph does not have to be a quasi-geodesic. We also show that the quasi-axis of a pseudo-Anosov element of the mapping class group may not have the strong contractibility property. Specifically, we show that, after choosing a generating set carefully, one can find a pseudo-Anosov homeomorphism f, a sequence of points w_k and a sequence of radii r_k so that the ball B(w_k, r_k) is disjoint from a quasi-axis a of f, but for any projection map from mapping class group to a, the diameter of the image of B(w_k, r_k) grows like log(r_k).

Counting closed geodesics in strata

We compute the asymptotic growth rate of the number N(C, R) of closed geodesics of length less than R in a connected component C of a stratum of quadratic differentials. We prove that for any 0 < θ< 1, the number of closed geodesics of length at most R that spend at least θ-fraction of time outside of a compact subset of C is exponentially smaller than N(C, R). The theorem follows from a lattice counting statement. For points x, y in the moduli space M of Riemann surfaces, and for 0 < θ< 1, we find an upper-bound for the number of geodesic paths of length less than R in C which connect a point near x to a point near y and spend a θ-fraction of the time outside of a compact subset of C.

Local maxima of the systole function

We construct infinite families of closed hyperbolic surfaces that are local maxima for the systole function on their respective moduli spaces. The systole takes values along a linearly divergent sequence $(L_n)_{n\geq 1}$ at these local maxima. The only surface corresponding to $L_1\approx 3.057$ is the Bolza surface in genus $2$. For every genus $g\geq 13$, we obtain either one or two local maxima in $\mathcal{M}_g$ whose systoles have length $L_2\approx 5.909$. For each $n\geq 3$, there is an arithmetic sequence of genera $(g_k)_{k\geq 1}$ such that the number of local maxima of the systole function in $\mathcal{M}_{g_k}$ at height $L_n$ grows super-exponentially in $g_k$. In particular, level sets of the systole function can have an arbitrarily large number of connected components. Many of the surfaces we construct have trivial automorphism group, and are the first examples of local maxima with this property.

Renormalizing an infinite rational IET

We study an interval exchange transformation of [0,1] formed by cutting the interval at the points 1/n and reversing the order of the intervals. We find that the transformation is periodic away from a Cantor set of Hausdorff dimension zero. On the Cantor set, the dynamics are nearly conjugate to the 2-adic odometer.

Isomorphisms between big mapping class groups

We show that any isomorphism between mapping class groups of orientable infinite-type surfaces is induced by a homeomorphism between the surfaces. Our argument additionally applies to automorphisms between finite-index subgroups of these `big' mapping class groups and shows that each finite-index subgroup has finite outer automorphism group. As a key ingredient, we prove that all simplicial automorphisms between curve complexes of infinite-type orientable surfaces are induced by homeomorphisms.

Algebraic Ending Laminations and Quasiconvexity

We explicate a number of notions of algebraic laminations existing in the literature, particularly in the context of an exact sequence $$1\to H\to G \to Q \to 1 $$ of hyperbolic groups. These laminations arise in different contexts: existence of Cannon-Thurston maps; closed geodesics exiting ends of manifolds; dual to actions on $\R-$trees. We use the relationship between these laminations to prove quasiconvexity results for finitely generated infinite index subgroups of $H$, the normal subgroup in the exact sequence above.

Limit sets of Weil-Petersson geodesics

In this paper we prove that the limit set of any Weil-Petersson geodesic ray with uniquely ergodic ending lamination is a single point in the Thurston compactification of Teichmüller space. On the other hand, we construct examples of Weil-Petersson geodesics with minimal nonuniquely ergodic ending laminations and limit set a circle in the Thurston compactification.

Non-convex balls in the Teichmüller metric

We prove that the Teichmüller space of surfaces of genus $\mathbf{g}$ with $\mathbf{p}$ punctures contains balls which are not convex in the Teichmüller metric whenever $3\mathbf{g}-3+\mathbf{p} > 1$.

Convexity of balls in the outer space

In this paper we study the convexity properties of geodesics and balls in Outer space equipped with the Lipschitz metric. We introduce a class of geodesics called balanced folding paths and show that, for every loop $α$, the length of $α$ along a balanced folding path is not larger than the maximum of its lengths at the end points. This implies that out-going balls are weakly convex. We then show that these results are sharp by providing several counterexamples.

Uniform fellow traveling between surgery paths in the sphere graph

We show that the Hausdorff distance between any forward and any backward surgery paths in the sphere graph is at most 2. From this it follows that the Hausdorff distance between any two surgery paths with the same initial sphere system and same target sphere system is at most 4. Our proof relies on understanding how surgeries affect the Guirardel core associated to sphere systems. We show that applying a surgery is equivalent to performing a Rips move on the Guirardel core.

Limit sets of Teichmüller geodesics with minimal nonuniquely ergodic vertical foliation, II

Given a sequence of curves on a surface, we provide conditions which ensure that (1) the sequence is an infinite quasi-geodesic in the curve complex, (2) the limit in the Gromov boundary is represented by a nonuniquely ergodic ending lamination, and (3) the sequence divides into a finite set of subsequences, each of which projectively converges to one of the ergodic measures on the ending lamination. The conditions are sufficiently robust, allowing us to construct sequences on a closed surface of genus $g$ for which the space of measures has the maximal dimension $3g-3$, for example. We also study the limit sets in the Thurston boundary of Teichmüller geodesic rays defined by quadratic differentials whose vertical foliations are obtained from the constructions mentioned above. We prove that such examples exist for which the limit is a cycle in the $1$-skeleton of the simplex of projective classes of measures visiting every vertex.

Uniform growth rate

In an evolutionary system in which the rules of mutation are local in nature, the number of possible outcomes after $m$ mutations is an exponential function of $m$ but with a rate that depends only on the set of rules and not the size of the original object. We apply this principle to find a uniform upper bound for the growth rate of certain groups including the mapping class group. We also find a uniform upper bound for the growth rate of the number of homotopy classes of triangulations of an oriented surface that can be obtained from a given triangulation using $m$ diagonal flips.
