Prime tight frames

We introduce a class of finite tight frames called prime tight frames and prove some of their elementary properties. In particular, we show that any finite tight frame can be written as a union of prime tight frames. We then characterize all prime harmonic tight frames and use this characterization to suggest effective analysis and synthesis computation strategies for such frames. Finally, we describe all prime frames constructed from the spectral tetris method, and, as a byproduct, we obtain a characterization of when the spectral tetris construction works for redundancies below two.

Orthogonal Polynomials on the Sierpinski Gasket

The construction of a Laplacian on a class of fractals which includes the Sierpinski gasket ({\bf $SG$}) has given rise to an intensive research on analysis on fractals. For instance, a complete theory of polynomials and power series on $SG$ has been developed by one of us and his coauthors. We build on this body of work to construct certain analogs of classical orthogonal polynomials (OP) on $SG$. In particular, we investigate key properties of these OP on $SG$, including a three-term recursion formula and the asymptotics of the coefficients appearing in this recursion. Moreover, we develop numerical tools that allow us to graph a number of these OP. Finally, we use these numerical tools to investigate the structure of the zero and the nodal sets of these polynomials.

Scalable Frames

Tight frames can be characterized as those frames which possess optimal numerical stability properties. In this paper, we consider the question of modifying a general frame to generate a tight frame by rescaling its frame vectors; a process which can also be regarded as perfect preconditioning of a frame by a diagonal operator. A frame is called scalable, if such a diagonal operator exists. We derive various characterizations of scalable frames, thereby including the infinite-dimensional situation. Finally, we provide a geometric interpretation of scalability in terms of conical surfaces.

Probabilistic frames: An overview

Finite frames can be viewed as mass points distributed in $N$-dimensional Euclidean space. As such they form a subclass of a larger and rich class of probability measures that we call probabilistic frames. We derive the basic properties of probabilistic frames, and we characterize one of their subclasses in terms of minimizers of some appropriate potential function. In addition, we survey a range of areas where probabilistic frames, albeit, under different names, appear. These areas include directional statistics, the geometry of convex bodies, and the theory of t-designs.

Minimization of the Probabilistic p-frame Potential

We investigate the optimal configurations of n points on the unit sphere for a class of potential functions. In particular, we characterize these optimal configurations in terms of their approximation properties within frame theory. Furthermore, we consider similar optimal configurations in terms of random distributions of points on the sphere. In this probabilistic setting, we characterize these optimal distributions by means of special classes of probabilistic frames. Our work also indicates some connections between statistical shape analysis and frame theory.

Szego limit theorems on the Sierpinski gasket

We use the existence of localized eigenfunctions of the Laplacian on the Sierpinski gasket to formulate and prove analogues of the strong Szego limit theorem in this fractal setting. Furthermore, we recast some of our results in terms of equally distributed sequences.

Frame potential and finite abelian groups

This article continues a prior investigation of the authors with the goal of extending characterization results of convolutional tight frames from the context of cyclic groups to general finite abelian groups. The collections studied are formed by translating a number of \emph{generators} by elements of a fixed subgroup and it is shown, under certain norm conditions, that tight frames with this structure are characterized as local minimizers of the frame potential. Natural analogs to the downsampling and upsampling operators of finite cyclic groups are studied for arbitrary subgroups of finite abelian groups. Directions of further study are also proposed.

Invertibility of the Gabor frame operator on the Wiener amalgam space

We use a generalization of Wiener's $1/f$ theorem to prove that for a Gabor frame with the generator in the Wiener amalgam space $W(L^{\infty}, \ell^{1}_ν)(\mathbb{R}^{d})$, the corresponding frame operator is invertible on this space. Therefore, for such a Gabor frame, the generator of the canonical dual belongs also to $W(L^{\infty}, \ell^{1}_ν)(\mathbb{R}^{d}) $
