Lie groupoids in information geometry

We demonstrate that the proper general setting for contrast (potential) functions in statistical and information geometry is the one provided by Lie groupoids and Lie algebroids. The contrast functions are defined on Lie groupoids and give rise to two-forms and three-forms on the corresponding Lie algebroid. If the two-form is non-degenerate, it defines a `pseudo-Riemannian' metric on the Lie algebroid and a family of Lie algebroid torsion-free connections, including the Levi-Civita connection of the metric. In this framework, the two-point functions are just functions on the pair groupoid $M\ti M$ with the `standard' metric and affine connection on the Lie algebroid $\sT M$. We study also reductions of such systems and infinite-dimensional examples. In particular, we find a contrast function defining the Fubini-Study metric on the Hilbert projective space.

On n-tuple principal bundles

We develop the concept of a double (more generally n-tuple) principal bundle departing from a compatibility condition for a principal action of a Lie group on a groupoid.

Geometry of Routh reduction

Routh reduction for Lagrangian systems with cyclic variable is presented as an example of Lagrangian reduction. It appears that Routhian, which is a generating object of reduced dynamics, is not a function any more but a section of a bundle of affine values.

Remarks on Contact and Jacobi Geometry

We present an approach to Jacobi and contact geometry that makes many facts, presented in the literature in an overcomplicated way, much more natural and clear. The key concepts are Kirillov manifolds and linear Kirillov structures, i.e., homogeneous Poisson manifolds and, respectively, homogeneous linear Poisson manifolds. The difference with the existing literature is that the homogeneity of the Poisson structure is related to a principal ${\rm GL}(1,{\mathbb R})$-bundle structure on the manifold and not just to a vector field. This allows for working with Jacobi bundle structures on nontrivial line bundles and drastically simplifies the picture of Jacobi and contact geometry. Our results easily reduce to various basic theorems of Jacobi and contact geometry when the principal bundle structure is trivial, while giving new insights into the theory.

On the concept of a filtered bundle

We present the notion of a filtered bundle as a generalisation of a graded bundle. In particular, we weaken the necessity of the transformation laws for local coordinates to exactly respect the weight of the coordinates by allowing more general polynomial transformation laws. The key examples of such bundles include affine bundles and various jet bundles, both of which play fundamental roles in geometric mechanics and classical field theory. We also present the notion of double filtered bundles which provide natural generalisations of double vector bundles and double affine bundles. Furthermore, we show that the linearisation of a filtered bundle - which can be seen as a partial polarisation of the admissible changes of local coordinates - is well defined.

On a geometric framework for Lagrangian supermechanics

We re-examine classical mechanics with both commuting and anticommuting degrees of freedom. We do this by defining the phase dynamics of a general Lagrangian system as an implicit differential equation in the spirit of Tulczyjew. Rather than parametrising our basic degrees of freedom by a specified Grassmann algebra, we use arbitrary supermanifolds by following the categorical approach to supermanifolds.

The Tulczyjew triple in mechanics on a Lie group

Tulczyjew triple for physical systems with configuration manifold equipped with Lie group structure is constructed and discussed. The case of systems invariant with respect to group acton is considered together with appropriate reduction of the Tulczyjew triple. The theory is applied to free rigid-body dynamics.

Graded Bundles in the Category of Lie Groupoids

We define and make initial study of Lie groupoids equipped with a compatible homogeneity (or graded bundle) structure, such objects we will refer to as weighted Lie groupoids. One can think of weighted Lie groupoids as graded manifolds in the category of Lie groupoids. This is a very rich geometrical theory with numerous natural examples. Note that $\mathcal{VB}$-groupoids, extensively studied in the recent literature, form just the particular case of weighted Lie groupoids of degree one. We examine the Lie theory related to weighted groupoids and weighted Lie algebroids, objects defined in a previous publication of the authors, which are graded manifolds in the category of Lie algebroids, showing that they are naturally related via differentiation and integration. In this work we also make an initial study of weighted Poisson-Lie groupoids and weighted Lie bi-algebroids, as well as weighted Courant algebroids.

Linear duals of graded bundles and higher analogues of (Lie) algebroids

Graded bundles are a class of graded manifolds which represent a natural generalisation of vector bundles and include the higher order tangent bundles as canonical examples. We present and study the concept of the linearisation of graded bundle which allows us to define the notion of the linear dual of a graded bundle. They are examples of double structures, graded-linear ($\mathcal{GL}$) bundles, including double vector bundles as a particular case. On $\mathcal{GL}$-bundles we define what we shall call weighted algebroids, which are to be understood as algebroids in the category of graded bundles. They can be considered as a geometrical framework for higher order Lagrangian mechanics. Canonical examples are reductions of higher tangent bundles of Lie groupoids. Weighted algebroids represent also a generalisation of $\mathcal{VB}$-algebroids as defined by Gracia-Saz & Mehta and the $\mathcal{LA}$-bundles of Mackenzie. The resulting structures are strikingly similar to Voronov's higher Lie algebroids, however our approach does not require the initial structures to be defined on supermanifolds.

Tulczyjew triples in the constrained dynamics of strings

We show that there exists a natural Tulczyjew triple in the dynamics of objects for which the standard kinematic configuration space $TM$, i.e. the tangent bundle, is replaced with its $n$-th exterior power, i.e. the bundle of tangent $n$-vectors. In this framework, which is fully covariant, we geometrically derive phase equations, as well as Euler-Lagrange equations, including nonholonomic constraints into the picture. Dynamics of strings and a constrained Plateau problem in statics are particular cases of this framework.

Tulczyjew Triples in Higher Derivative Field Theory

The geometrical structure known as Tulczyjew triple has been used with success in analytical mechanics and first order field theory to describe a wide range of physical systems including Lagrangian/Hamiltonian systems with constraints and/or sources, or with singular Lagrangian. Starting from the first principles of the variational calculus we derive Tulczyjew triples for classical field theories of arbitrary high order, i.e. depending on arbitrary high derivatives of the fields. A first triple appears as the result of considering higher order theories as first order ones with configurations being constrained to be holonomic jets. A second triple is obtained after a reduction procedure aimed at getting rid of nonphysical degrees of freedom. This picture we present is fully covariant and complete: it contains both Lagrangian and Hamiltonian formalisms, in particular the Euler-Lagrange equations. Notice that, the required Geometry of jet bundles is affine (as opposed to the linear Geometry of the tangent bundle). Accordingly, the notions of affine duality and affine phase space play a distinguished role in our picture. In particular the Tulczyjew triples in this paper consist of morphisms of double affine-vector bundles which, moreover, preserve suitable presymplectic structures.

Higher order mechanics on graded bundles

In this paper we develop a geometric approach to higher order mechanics on graded bundles in both, the Lagrangian and Hamiltonian formalism, via the recently discovered weighted algebroids. We present the corresponding Tulczyjew triple for this higher order situation and derive in this framework the phase equations from an arbitrary (also singular) Lagrangian or Hamiltonian, as well as the Euler-Lagrange equations. As important examples, we geometrically derive the classical higher order Euler-Lagrange equations and analogous reduced equations for invariant higher order Lagrangians on Lie groupoids.

Geometry of Lagrangian and Hamiltonian formalisms in the dynamics of strings

The Lagrangian description of mechanical systems and the Legendre Transformation (considered as a passage from the Lagrangian to the Hamiltonian formulation of the dynamics) for point-like objects, for which the infinitesimal configuration space is TM, is based on the existence of canonical symplectic isomorphisms of double vector bundles T*TM, T*TM, and TT*M. We show that there exist an analogous picture in the dynamics of objects for which the configuration space is the vector bundle of n-vectors, if we make use of certain graded bundle structures of degree n, i.e. objects generalizing vector bundles (for which n=1). For instance, the role of TT*M is played in our approach by the vector bundle of n-vectors on the bundle of n-covectors, which is canonically a graded bundle of degree n over the bundle of n-vectors. Dynamics of strings and the Plateau problem in statics are particular cases of this framework.

Tulczyjew triples: from statics to field theory

We propose a geometric approach to dynamical equations of physics, based on the idea of the Tulczyjew triple. We show the evolution of these concepts, starting with the roots lying in the variational calculus for statics, through Lagrangian and Hamiltonian mechanics, and concluding with Tulczyjew triples for classical field theories, illustrated with a numer of important examples.

The Tulczyjew triple for classical fields

The geometrical structure known as the Tulczyjew triple has proved to be very useful in describing mechanical systems, even those with singular Lagrangians or subject to constraints. Starting from basic concepts of variational calculus, we construct the Tulczyjew triple for first-order Field Theory. The important feature of our approach is that we do not postulate {\it ad hoc} the ingredients of the theory, but obtain them as unavoidable consequences of the variational calculus. This picture of Field Theory is covariant and complete, containing not only the Lagrangian formalism and Euler-Lagrange equations but also the phase space, the phase dynamics and the Hamiltonian formalism. Since the configuration space turns out to be an affine bundle, we have to use affine geometry, in particular the notion of the affine duality. In our formulation, the two maps $α$ and $β$ which constitute the Tulczyjew triple are morphisms of double structures of affine-vector bundles. We discuss also the Legendre transformation, i.e. the transition between the Lagrangian and the Hamiltonian formulation of the first-order field theory

Dirac Algebroids in Lagrangian and Hamiltonian Mechanics

We present a unified approach to constrained implicit Lagrangian and Hamiltonian systems based on the introduced concept of Dirac algebroid. The latter is a certain almost Dirac structure associated with the Courant algebroid on the dual $E^\ast$ to a vector bundle $E$. If this almost Dirac structure is integrable (Dirac), we speak about a Dirac-Lie algebroid. The bundle $E$ plays the role of the bundle of kinematic configurations (quasi-velocities), while the bundle $E^\ast$ - the role of the phase space. This setting is totally intrinsic and does not distinguish between regular and singular Lagrangians. The constraints are part of the framework, so the general approach does not change when nonholonomic constraints are imposed, and produces the (implicit) Euler-Lagrange and Hamilton equations in an elegant geometric way. The scheme includes all important cases of Lagrangian and Hamiltonian systems, no matter if they are with or without constraints, autonomous or non-autonomous etc., as well as their reductions; in particular, constrained systems on Lie algebroids. we prove also some basic facts about the geometry of Dirac and Dirac-Lie algebroids.

Lagrangian and Hamiltonian formalism in Field Theory: a simple model

The static of smooth maps from the two-dimensional disc to a smooth manifold can be regarded as a simplified version of the Classical Field Theory. In this paper we construct the Tulczyjew triple for the problem and describe the Lagrangian and Hamiltonian formalism. We outline also natural generalizations of this approach to arbitrary dimensions.
