Quest for MeV frequency combs -- proposal for ELI experiments

The optical frequency comb has become an indispensable tool for high precision spectroscopy. Also experiments in the field of ultrafast physics rely on the frequency comb technique to generate precisely controlled attosecond optical pulses by means of the high-order harmonic generation. However, in order to generate even shorter laser pulses or to apply this technique in investigations of nuclear structure, combs of frequencies of the order of MeV are necessary. It seems that it may not be possible to achieve such photon energies by high-order harmonic generation. In this context the possibility of the generation of Thomson and Compton-based frequency combs is presented. Diffraction of generated radiation by a sequence of laser pulses and its analogy to the diffraction grating is elucidated. Theoretical investigations presented in this report can be considered as the proposal for future ELI experiments [www.eli-laser.eu]

Universality of comb structures in strong-field QED

We demonstrate a new mechanism for coherent comb generation in both radiation and matter domains, which is by using strong-field quantum electrodynamics processes. Specifically, we demonstrate this for nonlinear Compton scattering which has the potential to generate frequency combs extending towards the $γ$-ray spectral region as well as combs of ultra-relativistic electrons extending towards the MeV regime. Moreover, we show that coherent energy combs of positrons (or electrons) emerge in laser-induced pair creation processes such as the Breit-Wheeler process, proving the universality of the proposed mechanism.

Stabilization of decaying states and quantum vortices

A two-dimensional model of an electron moving under the influence of an attractive zero-range potential as well as external magnetic and electric fields is analyzed. We prove by numerical investigations that there are formed such resonances which manifest a peculiar dependance on the electric field intensity, i.e., although the electric field increases, the lifetime of these resonance states grows up. It is explained that this phenomenon, called further \textit{the stabilization}, is a close consequence of \textit{quantum-mechanical vortices} induced by the magnetic field and controlled by the electric field strength. In order to get more information about these vortices the phase of wavefunctions as well as the probability current for these stable resonances are investigated.

Generation and control of resonance states in crossed magnetic and electric fields

A two-dimensional electron system interacting with an impurity and placed in crossed magnetic and electric fields is under investigation. Since it is assumed that an impurity center interacts as an attractive $δ$-like potential a renormalization procedure for the retarded Green's function has to be carried out. For the vanishing electric field we obtain a close analytical expression for the Green's function and we find one bound state localized between Landau levels. It is also shown by numerical investigations that switching on the electric field new long-living resonance states localized in the vicinity of Landau levels can be generated.

Stabilization of impurity states in crossed magnetic and electric fields

It is shown that the renormalizability of the zero-range interaction in the two-dimensional space is always followed by the existence of a bound state, which is not true for odd-dimensional spaces. A renormalization procedure is defined and the exact retarded Green's function for electrons moving in two dimensions and interacting with both crossed magnetic and electric fields and an attractive zero-range interaction is constructed. Imaginary parts of poles of this Green's function determine lifetimes of quasi-bound (resonance) states. It is shown that for some particular parameters the stabilization against decay occurs even for strong electric fields.
