Regularity of minimizing $p$-harmonic maps from $B^3$ to $\mathbb{S}^3$

We prove that every minimizing $p$-harmonic map from $B^3$ into $\mathbb S^3$ is locally $C^{1,α}$ for some $α\in(0,1)$, for every $p>p_0$, where $p_0=\frac{7-\sqrt{17}}{2}\approx 1.44$. This closes the gap between the previously established regularity ranges $[2,2.642]\cup[2.961,3]$ and, in particular, yields full interior regularity for all $p\ge2$. The result also extends regularity to the subquadratic range $p_0<p<2$.

Minimizing and non-minimizing degree one $W^{s,1/s}$-harmonic maps between spheres

We show that $id:\mathbb{S}^1 \to \mathbb{S}^1$ is \emph{not} a minimizing $W^{s,\frac{1}{s}}$-harmonic map for $s \in (0,\frac{1}{8}$). On the other hand, for $s \in (\frac{1}{3},1)$ it is a local minimizing map, and for $s\in [\frac{1}{2}-\varepsilon,\frac{1}{2}+\varepsilon]$ it is a global minimizer. The usual extension or Fourier techniques being unavailable, our argument relies instead of stability analysis in $s$.

On minimizing $W^{s,1/s}$-maps between circles

For $s \in (1/4,1)$ and any degree the only $W^{s,\frac{1}{s}}$-minimizers for $\mathbb{S}^1 \to \mathbb{S}^1$ maps are Blaschke products. This gives a resolution of Open Problems 23 and 24 in Brezis-Mironescu's mappings to the circle book, as well as Brezis' Favorite Open Problem 5.4 in this $s$-range. Previous results of this type were partial and restricted only to a small neighborhood of $s=\frac{1}{2}$. In particular, Brezis' Favorite Open Problem 5.1 is completely settled. Moreover, as a consequence of the argument, one also obtains linearized stability results.

Min-max $n$-harmonic maps of degree 1 with free-boundary into $\mathbb{S}^{n-1}$ in almost round balls

Let $n\geq 3$ and let $Ω\subset \mathbb{R}^n$ be a $\mathcal{C}^1$ bounded domain which is diffeomorphic to a ball. We investigate here the problem of finding critical points of the $n$-energy in the space $\mathcal{I}=\{v\in W^{1,n}(Ω,\mathbb{R}^n) ; \ |\mathrm{tr}_{|\partial Ω}v|=1\}$. Maps in $\mathcal{I}$ have a well-defined topological degree on $\partial Ω$ but this degree is not continuous for the weak convergence in $W^{1,n}$. Hence finding critical points with prescribed degrees results in a problem of lack of compactness. We first prove that minimizers of the $n$-energy exist only when $Ω$ is a round ball and when the prescribed degree is $-1,0$ or $1$. We then develop a mountain pass approach for the $(n+α)$-energies and study the convergence, when $α$ goes to zero, of the resulting critical points via a bubbling analysis. We exclude the existence of bubbles in the case where $Ω$ is close to a ball by proving an energy gap result for free boundary $n$-harmonic maps from $\mathbb{B}^n$ to $\mathbb{B}^n$. We thus obtain the existence of critical points of the $n$-energy with prescribed degree $1$ when $Ω$ is close to a ball.

A remark on staircase laminates in restricted sets

We slightly extend the convex integration via staircase laminate toolbox recently developed by Kleiner, Müller, Székelyhidi, and Xie. As an example we revisit the proof by Astala-Faraco-Székelyhidi on optimal Meyers' regularity theory via this framework.

Generic non-uniqueness of minimizing harmonic maps from a ball to a sphere

In this note, we study non-uniqueness for minimizing harmonic maps from $B^3$ to $\mathbb{S}^2$. We show that every boundary map can be modified to a boundary map that admits multiple minimizers of the Dirichlet energy by a small $W^{1,p}$-change for $p<2$. This strengthens a remark by the second-named author and Strzelecki. The main novel ingredient is a homotopy construction, which is the answer to an easier variant of a challenging question regarding the existence of a norm control for homotopies between $ W^{1,p} $ maps.

Existence of nontrival $n$-harmonic maps via min-max methods

For any $n \geq 3$ and any closed manifold $\mathcal{N}$ with $π_{n+k}(\mathcal{N}) \neq \{0\}$ for some $k \geq 0$, we establish the existence of nontrivial $n$-harmonic maps from $\mathbb{S}^n$ into $\mathcal{N}$. When $k\geq 1$, these maps naturally appear as bubbling limits of $p$-harmonic maps with $p > n$, obtained by min-max constructions in the limit $p \to n^+$.

Existence of minimal maps of degree one in $W^{\frac1p,p}(\mathbb S^1,\mathbb S^1)$ for $p \in [p',2]$, where $p' \approx 1.13924$

In this note, we show how the results of Mazowiecka--Schikorra, combined with those of Bourgain--Brezis--Mironescu, imply the existence of minimal maps of degree one in $ W^{\frac{1}{p},p}(\mathbb{S}^1,\mathbb{S}^1) $ for $ p \in [p', 2] $, where $ p' \approx 1.13924 $. This provides an affirmative answer in this range to a question posed by Mironescu and Brezis--Mironescu. In order to do so, we complement the results of Mazowiecka--Schikorra by extending them to the case $ n = 1 $ and $ 1 < p < 2 $, which had been excluded there for technical reasons.

Existence of infinitely many homotopy classes from $\mathbb S^3$ to $\mathbb S^2$ having a minimimzing $W^{s,\frac 3s}$-harmonic map

In 1998 T. Rivière proved that there exist infinitely many homotopy classes of $π_3(\mathbb S^2)$ having a minimizing 3-harmonic map. This result is especially surprising taking into account that in $π_3(\mathbb S^3)$ there are only three homotopy classes (corresponding to the degrees $\{-1,0,1\}$) in which a minimizer exists. We extend this theorem in the framework of fractional harmonic maps and prove that for $s\in(0,1)$ there exist infinitely many homotopy classes of $π_{3}(\mathbb S^{2})$ in which there is a minimizing $W^{s,\frac{3}{s}}$-harmonic map.

A weak energy identity for $(n+α)$-harmonic maps with a free boundary in a sphere

In this article, we show that sequences of $(n+α)$-harmonic maps with a free boundary in $\mathbb S^{d-1}$, where $α$ is a parameter tending to zero, converge to a bubble tree. For such sequences, we prove in detail that the limiting energy is equal to the energy of the macroscopic limit plus the sum of the energies of certain ``bubbles'', each multiplied by a corresponding coefficient.

Vectorial Kato inequality for $p$-harmonic maps with optimal constant

We derive the sharp vectorial Kato inequality for $p$-harmonic mappings. Surprisingly, the optimal constant differs from the one obtained for scalar valued $p$-harmonic functions by Chang, Chen, and Wei. As an application we demonstrate how this inequality can be used in the study of regularity of $p$-harmonic maps. Furthermore, in the case of $p$-harmonic maps from $B^3$ to $\mathbb{S}^3$, we enhance the known range of $p$ values for which regularity is achieved. Specifically, we establish that for $p \in [2, 2.642]$, minimizing $p$-harmonic maps must be regular.

A short note on nowhere smooth critical points of polyconvex functionals in arbitrary dimension

For any $M, n \geq 2$ and any open set $Ω\subset \mathbb{R}^n$ we find a smooth, strongly polyconvex function $F\colon \mathbb{R}^{M\times n}\to \mathbb{R}$ and a Lipschitz map $u\colon \mathbb{R}^n \to \mathbb{R}^M$ that is a weak local minimizer of the energy \[ \int_Ω F(Du). \] but with nowhere continuous partial derivatives. This extends celebrated results by Müller-Sverák and Székelyhidi to higher dimensions.

Regularity of minimizing $p$-harmonic maps into spheres and sharp Kato inequality

We study regularity of minimizing $p$-harmonic maps $u \colon B^3 \to \mathbb{S}^3$ for $p$ in the interval $[2,3]$. For a long time, regularity was known only for $p = 3$ (essentially due to Morrey) and $p = 2$ (Schoen-Uhlenbeck), but recently Gastel extended the latter result to $p \in [2,2+\frac{2}{15}]$ using a version of Kato inequality. Here, we establish regularity for a small interval $p\in [2.961,3]$ by combining Morrey's methods with Hardt and Lin's Extension Theorem. We also improve on the other result by obtaining regularity for $p \in [2,p_0]$ with $p_0 = \frac{3+\sqrt{3}}{2} \approx 2.366$. In relation to this, we address a question posed by Gastel and prove a sharp Kato inequality for $p$-harmonic maps in two-dimensional domains, which is of independent interest.

s-stability for W^{s,n/s}-harmonic maps in homotopy groups

We study $s$-dependence for minimizing $W^{s,n/s}$-harmonic maps $u\colon \mathbb{S}^n \to \mathbb{S}^\ell$ in homotopy classes. Sacks--Uhlenbeck theory shows that, for each $s$, minimizers exist in a generating subset of $π_{n}(\mathbb{S}^\ell)$. We show that this generating subset can be chosen locally constant in $s$. We also show that as $s$ varies the minimal $W^{s,n/s}$-energy in each homotopy class changes continuously. In particular, we provide progress to a question raised by Mironescu and Brezis--Mironescu.

Quantitative characterization of traces of Sobolev maps

We give a quantitative characterization of traces on the boundary of Sobolev maps in $\dot{W}^{1,p}(\mathcal M, \mathcal N)$, where $\mathcal{M}$ and $\mathcal{N}$ are compact Riemannian manifolds, $\partial \mathcal{M} \neq \emptyset$: the Borel-measurable maps $u\colon \partial \mathcal M \to \mathcal{N}$ that are the trace of a map $U\in \dot{W}^{1,p}(\mathcal M, \mathcal{N})$ are characterized as the maps for which there exists an extension energy density $w \colon \partial \mathcal{M} \to [0,\infty]$ that controls the Sobolev energy of extensions from $\lfloor p - 1 \rfloor$-dimensional subsets of $\partial \mathcal{M}$ to $\lfloor p\rfloor$-dimensional subsets of $\mathcal{M}$.

A fractional version of Rivière's GL(N)-gauge

We prove that for antisymmetric vectorfield $Ω$ with small $L^2$-norm there exists a gauge $A \in L^\infty \cap \dot{W}^{1/2,2}(\mathbb{R}^1,GL(N))$ such that ${\rm div}_{\frac12} (AΩ- d_{\frac{1}{2}} A) = 0$. This extends a celebrated theorem by Rivière to the nonlocal case and provides conservation laws for a class of nonlocal equations with antisymmetric potentials, as well as stability under weak convergence.

On the size of the singular set of minimizing harmonic maps

We consider minimizing harmonic maps $u$ from $Ω\subset \mathbb{R}^n$ into a closed Riemannian manifold $\mathcal{N}$ and prove: (1) an extension to $n \geq 4$ of Almgren and Lieb's linear law. That is, if the fundamental group of the target manifold $\mathcal{N}$ is finite, we have \[ \mathcal{H}^{n-3}(\textrm{sing } u) \le C \int_{\partial Ω} |\nabla_T u|^{n-1} \,d \mathcal{H}^{n-1}; \] (2) an extension of Hardt and Lin's stability theorem. Namely, assuming that the target manifold is $\mathcal{N}=\mathbb{S}^2$ we obtain that the singular set of $u$ is stable under small $W^{1,n-1}$-perturbations of the boundary data. In dimension $n=3$ both results are shown to hold with weaker hypotheses, i.e., only assuming that the trace of our map lies in the fractional space $W^{s,p}$ with $s \in (\frac{1}{2},1]$ and $p \in [2,\infty)$ satisfying $sp \geq 2$. We also discuss sharpness.

Minimal $W^{s,\frac{n}{s}}$-harmonic maps in homotopy classes

Let $Σ$ a closed $n$-dimensional manifold, $\mathcal{N} \subset \mathbb{R}^M$ be a closed manifold, and $u \in W^{s,\frac ns}(Σ,\mathcal{N})$ for $s\in(0,1)$. We extend the monumental work of Sacks and Uhlenbeck by proving that if $π_n(\mathcal{N})=\{0\}$ then there exists a minimizing $W^{s,\frac ns}$-harmonic map homotopic to $u$. If $π_n(\mathcal{N})\neq \{0\}$, then we prove that there exists a $W^{s,\frac{n}{s}}$-harmonic map from $\mathbb{S}^n$ to $\mathcal{N}$ in a generating set of $π_{n}(\mathcal{N})$. Since several techniques, especially Pohozaev-type arguments, are unknown in the fractional framework (in particular when $\frac{n}{s} \neq 2$ one cannot argue via an extension method), we develop crucial new tools that are interesting on their own: such as a removability result for point-singularities and a balanced energy estimate for non-scaling invariant energies. Moreover, we prove the regularity theory for minimizing $W^{s,\frac{n}{s}}$-maps into manifolds.
