2-Cluster Fixed-Point Analysis of Mean-Coupled Stuart-Landau Oscillators in the Center Manifold

We reduce the dynamics of an ensemble of mean-coupled Stuart-Landau oscillators close to the synchronized solution. In particular, we map the system onto the center manifold of the Benjamin-Feir instability, the bifurcation destabilizing the synchronized oscillation. Using symmetry arguments, we describe the structure of the dynamics on this center manifold up to cubic order, and derive expressions for its parameters. This allows us to investigate phenomena described by the Stuart-Landau ensemble, such as clustering and cluster singularities, in the lower-dimensional center manifold, providing further insights into the symmetry-broken dynamics of coupled oscillators. We show that cluster singularities in the Stuart-Landau ensemble correspond to vanishing quadratic terms in the center manifold dynamics. In addition, they act as organizing centers for the saddle-node bifurcations creating unbalanced cluster states as well for the transverse bifurcations altering the cluster stability. Furthermore, we show that bistability of different solutions with the same cluster-size distribution can only occur when either cluster contains at least $1/3$ of the oscillators, independent of the system parameters.

Global heteroclinic rebel dynamics among large 2-clusters in permutation equivariant systems

We explore equivariant dynamics under the symmetric group $S_N$ of all permutations of $N$ elements. Specifically we study one-parameter vector fields, up to cubic order, which commute with the standard real $(N-1)$-dimensional irreducible representation of $S_N$. The parameter is the linearization at the trivial 1-cluster equilibrium of total synchrony. All equilibria are cluster solutions involving up to three clusters. The resulting global dynamics is of gradient type: all bounded solutions are cluster equilibria and heteroclinic orbits between them. In the limit of large $N$, we present a detailed analysis of the web of heteroclinic orbits among the plethora of 2-cluster equilibria. Our focus is on the global dynamics of 3-cluster solutions with one rebel cluster of small size. These solutions describe slow relative growth and decay of 2-cluster states. For $N\rightarrow\infty$, the limiting heteroclinic web defines an integrable \emph{rebel flow} in the space of 2-cluster equilibrium configurations. We identify and study the seven qualitatively distinct global rebel flows which arise in this setting. Applications include oscillators with all-to-all coupling, and electrochemistry. For illustration we consider synchronization clusters among $N$ complex Stuart-Landau oscillators with complex linear global coupling.

Self-organized Multi-Frequency Clusters in an Oscillating Electrochemical System with Strong Nonlinear Coupling

We study the spatio-temporal dynamics of the oscillatory photo-electrodissolution of n-type Si in a fluoride-containing electrolyte under anodic potentials using in-situ ellipsometric imaging. When lowering the illumination intensity step-wise, we successively observe uniform oscillations, modulated amplitude clusters, and the coexistence of multi-frequency clusters i.e., regions with different frequencies, with a stationary domain. We argue that the multi-frequency clusters emerge due to an adaptive, nonlinear, and nonlocal coupling, similar to those found in the context of neural dynamics.

Bichaoticity Induced by Inherent Birhythmicity during the Oscillatory Electrodissolution of Silicon

The electrodissolution of p-type silicon in a fluoride-containing electrolyte is a prominent electrochemical oscillator with a still unknown oscillation mechanism. In this article, we present a study of its dynamical states occurring in a wide range of the applied voltage - external resistance parameter plane. We provide evidence that the system possesses inherent birhythmicity, and thus at least two distinct feedback loops promoting oscillatory behaviour. The two parameter regions in which the different limit cycles exist are separated by a band in which the dynamics exhibit bistability between two branches with different multimode oscillations. Following the states along one path through this bistable region, one observes that each branch undergoes a different transition to chaos, namely a period-doubling cascade and a quasiperiodic route with a torus-breakdown, respectively, making Si electrodissolution one of the few experimental systems exhibiting bichaoticity.

Lyapunov Analysis of Chimera States in Globally Coupled Stuart-Landau oscillators

Oscillatory systems with long-range or global coupling offer promising insight into the interplay between high-dimensional (or microscopic) chaotic motion and collective interaction patterns. Within this paper, we use Lyapunov analysis to investigate whether chimera states in globally coupled Stuart-Landau (SL) oscillators exhibit collective degrees of freedom. We compare two types of chimera states, which emerge in SL ensembles with linear and nonlinear global coupling, respectively, the latter introducing a constraint that conserves the oscillation of the mean. Lyapunov spectra reveal that for both chimera states the Lyapunov exponents split into different groups with different convergence properties in the limit of large system size. Furthermore, in both cases the Lyapunov dimension is found to scale extensively and the localization properties of covariant Lypunov vectors manifest the presence of collective Lyapunov modes. Here, however, we find qualitative differences between the two types of chimera states: Whereas the ones in the system under nonlinear global coupling exhibit only slow collective modes corresponding to Lyapunov exponents equal or close to zero, those which experience the linear mean-field coupling exhibit also faster collective modes associated with Lyapunov exponents with large positive or negative values.

Electro-Oxidation of p-Silicon in Fluoride-Containing Electrolyte: A Physical Model for the Regime of Negative Differential Resistance

When Si is anodically oxidized in a fluoride containing electrolyte, an oxide layer is grown. Simultaneously, the layer is etched by the fluoride containing electrolyte. The resulting stationary state exhibits a negative slope of the current-voltage characteristics in a certain range of applied voltage. We propose a physical model that reproduces this negative slope. In particular, our model assumes that the oxide layer consists of both partially and fully oxidized Si and that the etch rate depends on the effective degree of oxidation. Finally, we show that our simulations are in good agreement with measurements of the current-voltage characteristics, the oxide layer thickness, the dissolution valence, and the impedance spectra of the electrochemical system.

Cluster singularity: the unfolding of clustering behavior in globally coupled Stuart-Landau oscillators

The ubiquitous occurrence of cluster patterns in nature still lacks a comprehensive understanding. It is known that the dynamics of many such natural systems is captured by ensembles of Stuart-Landau oscillators. Here, we investigate clustering dynamics in a mean-coupled ensemble of such limit-cycle oscillators. In particular we show how clustering occurs in minimal networks, and elaborate how the observed 2-cluster states crowd when increasing the number of oscillators. Using persistence, we discuss how this crowding leads to a continuous transition from balanced cluster states to synchronized solutions via the intermediate unbalanced 2-cluster states. These cascade-like transitions emerge from what we call a cluster singularity. At this codimension-2 point, the bifurcations of all 2-cluster states collapse and the stable balanced cluster state bifurcates into the synchronized solution supercritically. We confirm our results using numerical simulations, and discuss how our conclusions apply to spatially extended systems.

An Emergent Space for Distributed Data with Hidden Internal Order through Manifold Learning

Manifold-learning techniques are routinely used in mining complex spatiotemporal data to extract useful, parsimonious data representations/parametrizations; these are, in turn, useful in nonlinear model identification tasks. We focus here on the case of time series data that can ultimately be modelled as a spatially distributed system (e.g. a partial differential equation, PDE), but where we do not know the space in which this PDE should be formulated. Hence, even the spatial coordinates for the distributed system themselves need to be identified - to emerge from - the data mining process. We will first validate this emergent space reconstruction for time series sampled without space labels in known PDEs; this brings up the issue of observability of physical space from temporal observation data, and the transition from spatially resolved to lumped (order-parameter-based) representations by tuning the scale of the data mining kernels. We will then present actual emergent space discovery illustrations. Our illustrative examples include chimera states (states of coexisting coherent and incoherent dynamics), and chaotic as well as quasiperiodic spatiotemporal dynamics, arising in partial differential equations and/or in heterogeneous networks. We also discuss how data-driven spatial coordinates can be extracted in ways invariant to the nature of the measuring instrument. Such gauge-invariant data mining can go beyond the fusion of heterogeneous observations of the same system, to the possible matching of apparently different systems.

Symmetries of Chimera States

Symmetry broken states arise naturally in oscillatory networks. In this Letter, we investigate chaotic attractors in an ensemble of four mean-coupled Stuart-Landau oscillators with two oscillators being synchronized. We report that these states with partially broken symmetry, so-called chimera states, have different set-wise symmetries in the incoherent oscillators, and in particular some are and some are not invariant under a permutation symmetry on average. This allows for a classification of different chimera states in small networks. We conclude our report with a discussion of related states in spatially extended systems, which seem to inherit the symmetry properties of their counterparts in small networks.

Destructive Impact of Molecular Noise on Nanoscale Electrochemical Oscillators

We study the loss of coherence of electrochemical oscillations on meso- and nanosized electrodes with numeric simulations of the electrochemical master equation for a prototypical electrochemical oscillator, the hydrogen peroxide reduction on Pt electrodes in the presence of halides. On nanoelectrodes, the electrode potential changes whenever a stochastic electron-transfer event takes place. Electrochemical reaction rate coefficients depend exponentially on the electrode potential and become thus fluctuating quantities as well. Therefore, also the transition rates between system states become time-dependent which constitutes a fundamental difference to purely chemical nanoscale oscillators. Three implications are demonstrated: (a) oscillations and steady states shift in phase space with decreasing system size, thereby also decreasing considerably the oscillating parameter regions; (b) the minimal number of molecules necessary to support correlated oscillations is more than 10 times as large as for nanoscale chemical oscillators; (c) the relation between correlation time and variance of the period of the oscillations predicted for chemical oscillators in the weak noise limit is only fulfilled in a very restricted parameter range for the electrochemical nano-oscillator.

A classification scheme for chimera states

We present a universal characterization scheme for chimera states applicable to both numerical and experimental data sets. The scheme is based on two correlation measures that enable a meaningful definition of chimera states as well as their classification into three categories: stationary, turbulent and breathing. In addition, these categories can be further subdivided according to the time-stationarity of these two measures. We demonstrate that this approach both is consistent with previously recognized chimera states and enables us to classify states as chimeras which have not been categorized as such before. Furthermore, the scheme allows for a qualitative and quantitative comparison of experimental chimeras with chimeras obtained through numerical simulations.

A robust autoassociative memory with coupled networks of Kuramoto-type oscillators

Uncertain recognition success, unfavorable scaling of connection complexity or dependence on complex external input impair the usefulness of current oscillatory neural networks for pattern recognition or restrict technical realizations to small networks. We propose a new network architecture of coupled oscillators for pattern recognition which shows none of the mentioned aws. Furthermore we illustrate the recognition process with simulation results and analyze the new dynamics analytically: Possible output patterns are isolated attractors of the system. Additionally, simple criteria for recognition success are derived from a lower bound on the basins of attraction.

Chimeras in globally coupled oscillatory systems: From ensembles of oscillators to spatially continuous media

We study an oscillatory medium with a nonlinear global coupling that gives rise to a harmonic mean-field oscillation with constant amplitude and frequency. Two types of cluster states are found, each undergoing a symmetry-breaking transition towards a related chimera state. We demonstrate that the diffusional coupling is non-essential for these complex dynamics. Furthermore, we investigate localized turbulence and discuss whether it can be categorized as a chimera state.

Self-organized alternating chimera states in oscillatory media

Oscillatory media can exhibit the coexistence of synchronized and desynchronized regions, so-called chimera states, for uniform parameters and symmetrical coupling. In a phase-balanced chimera state, where the totals of synchronized and desynchronized regions, respectively, are of the same size, the symmetry of the system predicts that interchanging both phases still gives a solution to the underlying equations. We observe this kind of interchange as a self-emerging phenomenon in an oscillatory medium with nonlinear global coupling. An interplay between local and global couplings renders the formation of these alternating chimeras possible.

Clustering as a prerequisite for chimera states in globally coupled systems

The coexistence of coherently and incoherently oscillating parts in a system of identical oscillators with symmetrical coupling, i.e., a chimera state, is even observable with uniform global coupling. We address the question of the prerequisites for these states to occur in globally coupled systems. By analyzing two different types of chimera states found for nonlinear global coupling, we show that a clustering mechanism to split the ensemble into two groups is needed as a first step. In fact, the chimera states inherit properties from the cluster states in which they originate. Remarkably, they can exist in parameter space between cluster and chaotic states, as well as between cluster and synchronized states.

Two-cluster solutions in an ensemble of generic limit-cycle oscillators with periodic self-forcing via the mean-field

We study two-cluster solutions of an ensemble of generic limit-cycle oscillators in the vicinity of a Hopf bifurcation, i.e. Stuart-Landau oscillators, with a nonlinear global coupling. This coupling leads to conserved mean-field oscillations acting back on the individual oscillators as a forcing. A reduction to two effective equations makes a linear stability analysis of the cluster solutions possible. These equations exhibit a $π$-rotational symmetry, leading to a complex bifurcation structure and a wide variety of solutions. In fact, the principal bifurcation structure resembles that of a 2:1 resonance tongue, while inside the tongue we observe an 1:1 entrainment.

Pattern formation during the oscillatory photoelectrodissolution of n-type silicon: Turbulence, clusters and chimeras

We report and classify the rich variety of patterns forming spontaneously in the oxide layer during the oscillatory photoelectrodissolution of n-type doped silicon electrodes under limited illumination. Remarkably, these patterns are often comprised of several dynamical states coexisting on the electrode, such as subharmonic phase clusters and spatio-temporal chaos, and include so-called 'chimera states'. The experiments suggest that the subharmonic phase clusters emerge from a period doubling bifurcation which, upon further parameter changes, evolve into classical phase clusters. Experimentally the occurrence of the patterns is controlled via two coupling mechanisms: A linear global coupling by an external resistor and a nonlinear coupling imposed on the system by the limitation of the illumination.

Unusual synchronization phenomena during electrodissolution of silicon: the role of nonlinear global coupling

The photoelectrodissolution of n-type silicon constitutes a convenient model system to study the nonlinear dynamics of oscillatory media. On the silicon surface, a silicon oxide layer forms. In the lateral direction, the thickness of this layer is not uniform. Rather, several spatio-temporal patterns in the oxide layer emerge spontaneously, ranging from cluster patterns and turbulence to quite peculiar dynamics like chimera states. Introducing a nonlinear global coupling in the complex Ginzburg-Landau equation allows us to identify this nonlinear coupling as the essential ingredient to describe the patterns found in the experiments. The nonlinear global coupling is designed in such a way, as to capture an important, experimentally observed feature: the spatially averaged oxide-layer thickness shows nearly harmonic oscillations. Simulations of the modified complex Ginzburg-Landau equation capture the experimental dynamics very well.
